TABLE OF CONTENTS:

All of the labs in this volume have been developed to help young learners explore key science concepts through investigations. These are not just fun activities with no real point to them other than to look cool. This book was designed with Kindergarten to 3rd graders in mind, although you might find the activities useful outside of that age range, especially 4th to 6th grade. Please note: adult supervision is strongly suggested for some of the activities. Each activity reinforces the idea of learning science hands-on and through direct observations when possible. Having things you can see, touch, hear, and even smell or taste makes learning science concepts fun and memorable. Each lab is labeled with tags at the bottom so you can find similar labs. They are also categorized by their general field in Earth, Life, or Physical Science.

1. Look at a specific animal.

A. Determine how its coloring, skin covering, eyes, teeth, appendages, and other body structures help it survive.

B. Really focus on how it is different from similar animals and how these differences give it an advantage, especially when finding food, hunting, or defending itself.

C. Compare to other animals.

2. Repeat with other animals, either in the same family (Ex. Lions and Tigers), or of completely different types (Ex. Turtles and Eagles)

Sketch the part(s) of the animal that really give it a survival/hunting advantage. Write about what you learned.

1. Take a walk outside, watch a video, or look at a nature picture, and record all the different kinds of plant and animal life you can find.

2. If you decide to walk outside, notepads to sketch and record observations are a must. You can also block off with stakes and twin a specific area you want children to observe.

3. Make diagrams or lists of what eats what. Don’t forget that plants need sunlight, water, and air!

4. Try to identify which animals eat plants, which ones eat meat, and which ones eat both.

Write about the kinds of animals/plants you see. Which ones are similar? What does each thing eat?
