This year’s Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile was about eighty meters short. Be assured that they were very displeased as their reputation for accuracy is virtually unparalleled in the region. They knew about it almost immediately and made no effort to conceal. Indeed, they put up a calculator to help folks understand what they might really have run. Many other races don’t spend that effort and are often even further off in accuracy without bothering to care. It was a massive racing season as 509 races had qualifying times matching the most spring races ever back in 2016. The trend still continues with more races and smaller races as there were 14 fewer major races than in 2016. Barely one seventh of the races were major but there a record 2.5 percent of the runners with ranked times with 25,000 fewer racers than last year. As all road racing is on different courses and conditions, the human touch is definitely more accurate than a pure numbers content from a fully computerized model. Computers do not account for incorrect race distances, or weather differences, or even different difficulty levels of terrain. The goal of any objective rankings system is to have the fewest surprises. A runner generally knows his or her own pecking order and can exalt the rewards when they have a special race that catapults them above their normal place. Racing, unlike many other sports, is fully age and sex-based. Though many times older runners can excel in the open section of an event, mostly runners are competing against runners of the same sex and in a narrow (usually five year) age grouping. Often when races do not know the runner’s age, they use 99 or 0. For some reason they continue having the age group 70-99 or 0-19, instead of 70-98 or 1-19, causing silly division errors. It seems unlikely that too many 99-year-olds or pre-anniversary babies are being gipped out of awards. However, often elder runners and teens have been. More and more, the model for race results is ad-based with bells and whistles. Runners are urged, and many times forced, to click on separate pages to get necessary information such as their age and sex even as they are bombarded by more frivolous information. If a runner’s age is listed anyone can ascertain which age group they are in. If only their age

Page 5: 50 Plus Club Best of 2015 Best of 2016 Best of 2017 Best ... · The men rose more than a third to sixty-two, well off their record of seventy-five, also from 2013. There are seventy-three

5

group is listed, one cannot tell their age and cannot be sure which of the standard age groups that they belong in. It seems obvious that a runner already knows his or her own time and is really looking at results for comparison with others runners. Women settled at fifty-eight percent of the ranked times reached and the total number rose sharply 12 percent to 5441. That is the highest number except for the massive 2016 with 5,544. Additionally, 581 of the 1,027 ranked runners are women, representing nearly 57 percent. The elite women’s division, running faster than a 41:15 for a 10K equivalent, remains the largest with seventy-seven women qualifying, still well off the record 103 from 2013. The men rose more than a third to sixty-two, well off their record of seventy-five, also from 2013. There are seventy-three major races (500 runners or more or twenty percent ranked). The Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile is back on top with 160 percent more ranked times (504) than the second best, the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K (329) and twice as many as the third most, the Rock N Roll Half Marathon with 267. On 11 of the 28 occasions, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile had the best 10K equivalent race time for a division. The open division consisted of 139 ranked runners Thirty-nine came from other divisions. Perry Shoemaker was the oldest ranked woman at 47 and David Wertz was the oldest ranked man at 43. Thirty-five races had more than 1,000 finishers and sixteen races had more than 2,000 finishers. The top ten races combined had another two thousand and five hundred fewer racers than last year. The two biggest races, Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile and Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K, combined for 37,500 finishers, matching last year. These two races boasted 833 qualified racers, the highest number ever. The Townebank 8K was the largest with 7,700 finishers, back to 2017 numbers and increasing to 115 ranked runners. Even with the Semper Five with 1,024 total finishers and the National Women’s 8K, which dropped in half to just 1,212 finishers, the Townebank 8K had 5,000 more than all the other five milers combined. Ten 10Ks had more than five hundred finishers. Of the forty-seven 10Ks raced in the spring, thirty-one percent of the ranked times were run at the monster Ukrops with 329 ranked times. Pike’s Peek had the second largest number of ranked runners (150) with 1/12 as many as they had finishers. These two races combined equaled forty-five percent of the ranked times in the 10K. First Carytown, then Apple Blossom and Elizabeth River Run also had as many as fifty ranked runners. Of the nineteen races with more than 200 finishers, MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K led the way with 12.76 percent ranked. The Elizabeth River Run was next with 9.35 percent ranked runners, followed by Pike’s Peek with 8.08 percent.

There were up to an amazing 368 5Ks, and just thirteen with more than 1,000 finishers, with an identical thirty-four with more than 500 finishers. The four Crystal City Fridays 5Ks all dipped well below a thousand this year dropping from a 5,100 total to just 3,000. The largest 5K, Kelly’s Shamrock 5K, dominated with the most ranked runners at seventy-eight. The event was nearly 50 percent larger as the next biggest, the Cherry Blossom 5K, and was also bigger than the other 2,000 plus runners 5Ks, the Rock n Roll 5K and National Police Week 5K combined. The Run for the D. O. G. 5K had barely a quarter more total runners, but at forty-six nearly 60 percent as many ranked runners. The more challenging Lucky Leprechaun 5K in Reston (36) was next with even a fifth as many racers. The four Crystal City courses combined for 42 times barely half of 2018 and much less than half of 2017. Eight more races consisted of more than twenty ranked runners, including the March Madness 5K with 38. There were only a dozen 10-mile races with the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile having 70 percent of the combined totals for the distance. The event dominated again in size with 504 ranked times, tops for all races and more than 3.4 times as many as the next largest ten-mile race. The Al Lewis bulled by Cherry Pit 10M as the percentage leader for ranked times, with 17.31 percent to 10.29 percent ranked times. Charlottesville became much more competitive with 108 ranked times with only 1.958 finishers, while the GW Parkway excelled with 152 ranked times but dropped nearly four thousand runners from last year to4,365. There were ten marathons, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon still struggles mightily in generating results but this time they were posted in a usable fashion in time to be included. They led the way with 2,500 finishers. The Yuengling Shamrock Festival Marathon was next in 1,676. Both were equally competitive with about 2 percent ranked. The B&A Trail Marathon was the most competitive with nearly 11 percent ranked. There were 40 percent as many ranked runners (twelve) with only one twelfth as many racers as Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. Against Yuengling it was 60 percent rank versus one ninth as many runners. At the half marathon, totals leveled off at 37,000. The Rock ‘n’ Roll regained so lost ground back to 12,406 but became 50 percent more competitive with 267 ranked runners. Still second in ranked runners, Shamrock improves greatly as well to 174. Frederick was third though dropping off a lot to fifty-four. The National Women’s Half Marathon moved to fourth with fifty-one, while the Marine Corps Historic dropped again to 36. Just eleven of the thirty-halves halves were major races. *** New for the Runner Rankings we are posting in Blue all the runners with National Class times (80%) of the top-rated time for each division based on their best time in 10K equivalence. The times are based on the youngest in each division except for the 19 and younger which is 19 for the strongest time. There will be some runners who are up to the 80% level by being on the older side of the 5-year division that get missed. However, in this manner, everyone in Blue will be at least 80%. ***

For the spring, the best racing season, nine women’s divisions had at least one National Class racer ranked, a total of 72. In the Open division, there were 35 though nine double dipped from other groups. The men were even more impressive with 101 National Class racers, though no one 70 and older made it. In the Open division, there were 55, though 9 double dipped from other groups. In the “you got to play to win” category, i.e. you only ran one event an impressive additional 84 men and 58 women ran a National Class race. Three runners made World Class status: 90% Age Grade: Tim Young 92.66%, Beth Sachtleben 91.96%, and Perry Shoemaker 96.4% Below is the 10K equivalent time you need to race to get a National Class ranking.

Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only earn an asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone, cited at the start of each division, is the fastest qualifying time run for each

division. In red, it means the division champion ran it. Otherwise, we have added the name of the runner who had the fastest time but only one qualifier. Now let’s see who made the top.

Open Men Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 47:40, 10K = 28:49 Traditionally, there are six big races that determine the majority of the ranked runners all across the spectrum. They are led by the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M. After that, it is the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K, the Rock N Roll Half Marathon, the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K, the Pike’s Peek 10K, and the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile. The Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M is rarely won by a local runner but Tim Young’s commanding performance in 47:40 is close to as fast as a local runner has managed at the event. That was easily enough to win the title but he added dominance at two more of the Big 6 races for perhaps the largest margin of victory for the Elite division that we have seen. He cruised to the finish at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 23:39 with second place, thirtieth ranked David Angell was next to finish, a full two minutes behind him. A week after his transcendent 10M, he was second overall at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 29:45. Twenty-third ranked Sean Barret was the next qualifier there in a solid 32:18. Our runner-up Daniel Meteer ran a swift 50:24 for a four second victory ahead of fourth ranked Carlos Jamieson at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile. Earlier he helped clinch his spot by doing what few runners ever do. He beat third ranked Christopher Sloane at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon, 1:07:33 to 1:07:45. Tenth ranked Harrison Toney was just ahead of eleventh ranked Paul Thistle, 1:08:44 to 1:08:59. Toney would win the Germantown 5 Miler in May with a fine 25:55. Thistle came in behind 45th ranked Harrison Sullivan at the Capitol Hill Classic 10K, 32:50 to 33:34. Less than a minute separated runners 19-48. Tyler Muse matched 49th place Roger Hopper for the most overall wins with five. Muse got underway early was an excellent Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:07:49 to take fifth place. Gary Mariano was third in the event in 1:09:20 but picks up his ranking place, seventh, for his Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 51:06. Nick Posada squeezes into sixth place by a lunge with his 51:04, while eighth ranked Tyler Anyan was not far back in 51:21. Ninth ranked Adam Lafemina was excellent at the S. Patrick’s Day double, finishing second overall in both. He ran the 5K in 15:22. In the 10K, he was even better finishing with the second fastest 10K behind Sloan’s overall win at Pike’s Peek in 31:16 and even besting Jamieson who came in next in 31:57. Then Lafemina slipped right in behind the others at the 10 miler in 51:34.

Twelfth ranked Thomas Rammelkamp ran the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:10:27, beating twenty-fifth ranked Nick Klastava (1:10:57). Then Rammelkamp popped a Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 51:50. That got him by thirteenth ranked Michael Mahan who finished in 51:56, as well as fifteenth ranked Evan Hardy (32:41). Dustin Meeker gathered in the fourteenth spot at a quieter spot on the eastern shore when he was the overall winner at the Tim Kennard 10M River Run in Salisbury with 52:41. At another big time 10 Miler in Charlottesville, sixteenth ranked Thomas Adam ran a solid 52:44 as second overall. The eighteenth position goes to Dustin Whitlow for his Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:10:15, ahead of Anyan’s 1:11:09. Whitlow also won the Crystal City Fridays 5K #3 outright in 15:57. Seventeenth place goes to Omari Daughtridge who was second overall at the BG 5K Run in 15:18. Only Tyler Muse, who won it in 14:59, had a faster 5K this spring. How do you separate the next two runners who tied for the third fastest 5K in 15:21? Jeremy Ardanuy, in nineteenth place, won it all at the highly competitive and huge Kelly's Shamrock 5K, ahead of twenty-ninth ranked Tripp Southerland (15:30) who was third overall. Trevor Hopper lands in twentieth when he added to his 15:21 overall win at the 5K for K9 with a third overall at the Carytown 10K in 33:55. Ardanuy also won the first day St. Patrick's Day 5K in 16:00 and was second at the big Sole for the City 10K in 33:01. Twenty-second ranked Aaron Kremer was second overall at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 2:29:34, a tick ahead of twenty-first place Schaffer Ochstein who snatches the difference away by winning over Kremer at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 53:09 to 53:18. Top master David Wertz is next the in 53:20 to take twenty-fourth place. Wertz confirmed by taking third at Pike’s Peek 10K in 32:28, a tie with fourth place Trever Reed who gets 32nd place and ahead of Klastava’s 32:31 for fifth place at the event. Stephen Harrison used his overall win at the J Brian's Tap Room 15K in 49:50 to take twenty-sixth place. He also bested Robert Reynolds, 32:24 to 32:26 at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K. Reynolds is thirty-first, just ahead of thirty-sixth ranked David McCollam (32:30). Twenty-seventh place goes to Austin McGinley for his St. Patrick's Day 10K in 32:20. Next up, in twenty-eighth Daniel Samet wins the first Crystal City Fridays 5K in 15:31. McGinley was a tad slower, winning the second Friday in 16:00 but he also added an overall win at the George Washington Parkway Classic 5K In 15:31. Samet won the Four Courts 4M in 20:37. The Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M decided another three spots with head-to-heads for places 33-35. Patrick Garret is first in 53:35, followed by Will Shafer in 53:40, and a photo finish next for Andrew Madison in the same time. In that same photo was Open winner Beth Sachtleben. A healthy-sized sixty-two runners qualified for the division. Nine of them from other age groups with David Wertz, 43, being the eldest.

Herndon High School 5K 15:24, 10K = 32:07 (Colin McCauley) Carter Johnson held onto his lead gained on the first day with his third overall placement at the March Madness 5K in 16:41. Fourth ranked Justin Sharp was there in 17:14. Two months later they met at the Apple Blossom 10K and earned their second qualifier. Johnson prevailed again; this time, 36:30 to 36:58. Sixth ranked Donovan Foley did the reverse running his 10K, the Pot of Gold on the first Sunday in 36:31. In April he headed south to Colonial Williamsburg to race the Run for the D. O. G. 5K in 17:31. Runner-up Samuel Bodmer put down the fastest ten miler, winning the Mission 10 Miler Race to Recovery in 58:28. In May, at half the distance, he won the Germantown 5 Miler in 29:29. Third place Ashton Tolson was second overall at the Packard Center Fiesta 5K in 17:19 to start May. A week later with a little more juice, he won it all at the Music Boosters 5K in 17:07, one of two overall triumphs. Fifth ranked Sean Burrill had a credible TowneBank Shamrock Festival

His fastest race was the Backpack Run 5K in 17:38. Craig Swain takes the next spot with his overall win at the Stafford Airport 5K in 17:47. Joseph Keely takes the last spot in the top ten, running the Herndon High School 5K in 18:05. Just ahead of him in ninth place Skylar Moon wins it all at the St. Patrick's Leprechaun 10K in 37:42. Will Christian was second overall at the Bust the Banks Trail Half Marathon In 1:17:16 to secure his second qualifier for the division but it would not be enough to get him into the open division. Christopher Sloane started the season racing the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:07:45. The first Saturday of April, Christian won it all at the Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 1:07:15 in Christian-like

numbers. The next day Sloane inched ahead, racing the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 50:27. If the guess of 80 meters short for the 10M was off by a meter, the two had a dead heat. Sloane ended the discussion at the end of the month winning it all at the Pike’s Peek 10K in 31:16. Third place Dustin Meeker had his best race beating sixth ranked Charlie Ban at the Tim Kennard 10M River Run, 52:41 to 55:08. Meeker was only second overall at the St. Patrick's Day 5K in 16:15 which was well behind Ban’s second fastest event the Crystal City Fridays 5K #4 overall win in 15:48. Ban started off really fast at the double out and back Al Lewis 10M, run in Washington, DC for the first time, but eighth ranked Dickson Mercer bided his time and ran him down to win it all, 55:46 to 56:25. Ban would do best at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:11:57 while fourth place Nick Klastava won at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:10:57. Klastava would finish fifth overall at the Pike's Peek 10K in 32:31. Fifth ranked David McCollam ran the monster Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 32:30. Two weeks later, McCollam was second overall at the Carytown 10K in 33:00. Ninth place Travis Boltjes, a master in June, did a lot of damage winning Park Runs with ten victories. He also had two overalls that were not Park Runs. At the Palio Di Siena 5K he ran 15:56 and at the venerable Van Metre 8K he triumphed in 26:43. Ninth place Billy Chorey ran the Charlottesville 10 Mile in 56:15, while tenth place John Archibald was second overall at the Mission 10 Miler Race to Recovery in 56:05. In eleventh place Denzel Ramirez ran the, known to be short, National Police Week 5K to an overall win in 16:12. In his second event Chorey was an overall winner at the big Virginia Institute of Autism 5K in 16:38. Ramirez ran the Capitol Hill Classic 10K In 34:23 and Archibald was third overall at the BG 5K Run in 16:53. Twenty-six men qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 33:42

40-44 Men Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 53:20, 10K = 32:14 The real competition is at the Shamrock festival in March and at the two ends of April the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, followed by the Pike's Peek 10K. Our top three racers each had two sub 33:00 10K equivalences, five of these six races were at the big three. Gone are the hallowed days (1993) when the Shamrock had a separate masters 8K with the top five guys running sub 25:00 and the top fifteen ran sub 28:00. This year David Angell led the charge finishing second overall among all runners in a national class 25:39. Last year he was third overall with the same time. Sixth place Victor Flemming beat fifth place Christopher Shaw, 27:17 to 28:13. Shaw, who races primarily for the Montgomery County Road runners bested ninth ranked Ryan Hadley who was third overall at the hilly MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K, 34:32 to 36:00. At the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, David Wertz took command of the division for good with a 53:20 victory over third ranked Tom Dichiara (54:21). At Pike’s Peek Wertz was again the top master and third overall in 32:28, while Dichiara had a very nifty 32:46 to win his age group. Shaw redeemed himself with a swift 34:17 took solidify his placement as fifth. Hadley ran 35:10. As the spring season waned, Angell edged past Wertz’s 10K with an overall win at the Appalachian Power Festival 5K in 15:33 but had to settle for second place. Fourth place William Palmer ran the Charlottesville 10 Mile in 56:08. Like Sloane in the submasters, his Bust the Banks Trail Half Marathon was a triumph without a fast time for his second qualifier. Seventh ranked Jason Dowdy overcame a

17:17 at the Hilltopper 5K in March to win the top master spot at the Carytown 10K in 34:38, ahead of eighth place John Sharp’s 35:06. Sharp was tops at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 35:24. Tenth ranked Khalid Kurtom is taking on the title of half marathon man owned by John Piggott for the past couple decades. Though he paused for a master win at the Tim Kennard 10M River Run in 1:00:06, he was top master at four halves, three major ones. He broke eighty minutes in all of them, including an overall win at the Western Maryland Rail Trail Half Marathon in 1:18:59. His fastest was a second overall at the Western Maryland Rail Trail Half Marathon in 1:18:49. He missed the two biggest halves. Eleventh ranked Ariel Laguilles did not, finishing third age group at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:18:32. He ran the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:01:31 as well. Twelfth place goes to Matthew Lofton as top master at the Apple Blossom 10K in 35:53. The division more than doubled to twenty-seven qualifiers. National Class times (80%) = 34:39

45-49 Men George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile 56:30, 10K = 34:00 (Patrick Kuhlman) It seems Jason Tripp wanted to retain his spring title from last year. Perhaps he foresaw that he would slow by fourteen seconds at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M to 58:40 and with the short course match Mark Landree’s Pike’s Peek triumph in 35:28 exactly. Maybe that is why he dropped more than a minute of last year’s Kelly's Shamrock 5K to take the master title in 16:33 and win the division. Landree would need that time to stay ahead of sixth ranked David Storper’s 36:17 at Pike’s Peek as well as eighth ranked Hasan Hobbs’s 37:09. You see though Landree won it all at the Springburst 10K in 37:05, a course that had always been an 8K, the course is known less than fondly as rolling hills. Matt Boyd races at lot, from 5K to half marathon. He ran the J Brian's Tap Room 15K in a third overall 56:41. Fifth ranked Mike Colaiacovo ran a second overall at the Hopewell Optimist 5K in 17:16 to close but he had lost his showdown back in April to Boyd at the Carytown 10K, 35:58 to 36:42. Colaiacovo also ran the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 36:21. That was just behind Keith Schumann’s overall win at the Queens Lake 5K in 17:24. Schumann had already taken the third spot in the rankings with his season opening race at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 28:14. Ninth ranked Jeffrey Hiott was second at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:21:39 just behind Boyd’s Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in 1:21:03. Michael Naff takes seventh with the best half, his Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:20:21. Hiott settles behind Hobbs as he lost to him at Pike’s Peek in 37:25. Martin Stacin’s Yorktown Victory 10K in 37:04 gets shuffled back to tenth. His second qualifier earned as he turned fifty was a tad slower than Hobbs’ Germantown 5M in 30:36. In a close race for eleventh place Alan Dixon gets the volume lean with nine wins, including the Al Lewis 10M in 1:02:11 as well as six top three overall finishes at Park Runs. Twelfth ranked Todd Bibb started the spring with the Pot of Gold 10K in 37:30 and added the Devotion Mother's Day 4M in 23:21 two months later. The division had twenty-five qualifiers. 50-54 Men Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 58:26, 10K = 35:19 History repeats itself as two-time masters champion Ray Pugsley aged up and won the division and crown at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 58:26. He was quite pleased with his time. The Potomac River Running owner normally races 5Ks in his own races with more modest goals. This makes him a threat to the usual titans of the divisions such as Doug Mock and Steve Kartalia. These three were so good in their youth that motivation is the key to getting them out to race hard now that they have past the half century mark. Runner-up Mock had an excellent TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 28:22, ahead of ninth ranked Colin Munsey (29:28). Mock added a third overall at the Kenya Connect 5K in 17:31 that was in the neighborhood of Pugsley’s second overall at the We've Got Your Back 5K in 17:41. Fourth ranked Tommy Neeson came in second overall as well at the Don't Sit on Colon Cancer 5K in 17:41. He added a solid CHKD 8K in 30:18 in May.

Third ranked Kartalia, even at 53, has virtually no peers when he toys with the field in his hometown of Westminster races. He ran the Bolt 4 Bolts 5K in 17:47. He earns his position in the unique Capital Challenge 3M in 16:51. This invitational race brings out racers from the three branches of government as well as the fourth estate. Places five through nine were razor close. Alexander Hetherington is fifth winning the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:01:36. Sixth ranked Mario Zuniga acquitted himself nicely against fourteenth ranked Stephen Crago at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon, 1:23:28 to 1:24:38. Thirteenth place Kevin McGuire sneaks past Crago by a whisper as his best half was a second overall at the Highlander Half Marathon in 1:24:33. Meanwhile, Zuniga giddily keep improving culminating with a second place at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:01:46 in his last effort before moving on to torment the 55-59 division. Seventh place Pete Wergin defeated tenth ranked Peter Bandettini at the Pike’s Peek 10K, 37:17 to 37:30. Bandettini is a middle-distance man with the year’s best at 800M through the mile. Between these two, Dennis Billings is not shabby at the shorter races either, owing the 3K best, as well as the 4M. He did have one outlier race, as second overall at the Prison Break 5K in 17:51 to claim his spot. Stephen Bohse is doing really well. He ran the B&A Trail Half Marathon in 1:24:23 which almost got him past John Piggott into eleventh place. Piggott is the half marathon man and has won many titles with that distance. He finished the Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 1:24:15. The division has forty-two qualified runners. National Class times (80%) = 37:33

55-59 Men Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 59:20, 10K = 35:52 (Jeff Duyn) Jeff Duyn is always there pushing Mark Neff. This year Duyn beat him at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 59:20 to 59:26. Duyn misses out on his first title as he only completed one event in the spring. Frank Perna takes the runner-up spot with his 1:01:30. Take about close, eighth ranked Kevin D’Amanda and fifth ranked Akintunde Morakinyo finished the ten miler in exactly 1:20:58. D’Amanda was awarded tenth and Morakinyo eleventh in that event. Fourth place David Haaga ran 1:01:48. On to Pike’s Peek where Neff won handily in 36:49 ahead of Morakinyo (37:22) and sixth ranked David Phipps (37:34). Neff was surprisingly faster at the MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K in 36:33 ahead of Haaga’s 38:34. William Dinkin

sneaks past Haaga for third place with a fine Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 37:19. He also was tops at the Uncorked Half in 1:25:32. Seventh place Hernan Garbini had the fastest half, winning the Park to Park Half Marathon in 1:23:23. His Charlottesville 10 Mile in 1:03:10 was not too shabby as his second best of five victories. It was faster than Morakinyo and D’Amanda’s Cherry Blossom as that race was a tad short and also bested ninth ranked William Smith who was in Charlottesville for a 1:05:04 finish. Eleventh place Craig Hymes won it all at the Joe & Sue Moore Memorial Scholarship 5K in 18:55. Tenth ranked Stefan Calos matched him exactly with a grandmaster victory at the Carytown 10K in 39:28. Calos would bolster that résumé with a White Bank Classic 5 Miler in 31:22. Hymes was a tad slower winning the Yorktown Victory 10K in 39:52. Stuart Pineo was right in their back yard, racing the Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 18:59 to cap the final the top dozen. Thirty-five runners qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 39:12

60-64 Men Virginia Regional Ballet 5K 18:29, 10K = 38:33 Could Stephen Chantry be beatable? Rick Samaha thought maybe so. He rushed out of the gates to an early lead at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 30:55. Then he won the Queens Lake 5K in 18:55. Robert Whitaker was ousted by Chantry at the Run for the D. O. G. 5K, 18:56 to 19:15 but Samaha was still in the money. Then came May and Chantry was supreme at the Virginia Regional Ballet 5K in 18:29. Whitaker, who would later run the fastest mile of the year, was next in 18:55 to take third in the division. Samaha captured silver with his 8K. Still, on the final week, Pete Gibson ran his solo ride to victory at the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 39:23 and Whitaker pushed Chantry’s 40:24 back to third with his 39:49 in that event. Fourth ranked Bill Raabe was back at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M with a near identical 1:08:20 from last year. The month before at his best event, he ran the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:34:02. John Chall won eight times but his best race he was second. His Pike’s Pike 10K in 41:40 combined with his win at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 20:03 kept him just ahead of sixth ranked Mark Yost who ran the Capital Challenge 3M in 19:23. Yost also surprised Raabe at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon, winning in 1:32:23. Park runner Manuel Rivera matched his best Fletcher’s Cove 5K in 20:24 with his victory at the Semper Fi 5K to take seventh place. Back to Pike’s Peek, tenth ranked Michael Kearney ran 43:32. Former division champion Dan Lawson ran 44:02 to garner thirteenth place and 20 seconds and three places later Steven Cordes take seventeenth place. Eighth ranked Mike Meadows does the 5K thing at the March Madness event in 20:47. Jerry Dresner is rated ninth for his Stoneleigh Stampede Run 5K in 20:49. Eleventh ranked John Robinson is showing up on the radar with a fine third overall Montvale 10M in 1:12:35. Finn Pincus gets the nod for twelfth with his Backpack Run 10K in 43:42.

65-69 Men Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 1:09:21, 10K = 41:55 Richard Grant appeared on the scene taking fifth at the international class field at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 33:14. Three weeks later, he bolted to a win at the Yorktown Victory 10K in 42:17. Both times were faster than last spring’s champion was able to run. The following day Alan Pemberton was the top local age group finisher at most international field race of all, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M. His 1:09:21 vaulted him past Grant to the title. Pemberton had earlier run the fastest half at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:37:19. Third place went to another 10-mile specialist, Harrison Grayson, who finished behind Pemberton in 1:11:38. Grayson would win the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:13:19 later in the month. Grant would end the season at the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 43:56, while Pemberton showed speed winning the Semper Fi 5K in 20:30. Also, at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, fourth ranked Eugene Myers ran a sterling 1:14:22. He was followed by tenth place Ken Krehbiel (1:16:04) and

thirteenth place Glenn Clemmons (1:18:01). Myers was gold at the Pike’s Peek 10K in 44:38, while fourteenth ranked Bill Loomis earned silver, running his first race in the new division in 47:03. Paul Ryan, the 5K man, won the last two seasons with fast Park Run 5Ks at Fletcher’s. For the spring, he took on the fastest Park Run course in the region and in May was the overall winner in Anacostia with 21:34 to take fifth place in the division. Seventh ranked Duane Rosenberg remains loyal to his Park Run, winning eleven times at the weekly run in College Park. His best race was in 21:16 in mid-May. Sixth position goes to Tom Nolan who squeezes past him running the GROC 10K in 45:22. This course is modestly called cross country as the mostly flat course is not very technical, running five loops around the pond at Buddy Attick Park. The oldest runner in the division, Jim Wright, finishes eighth having the second-best half, winning the Fallen Soldiers Half Marathon in 1:41:36 just six weeks after the fastest marathon in 3:35:29 at the Runners Marathon of Reston. Only five other racers finished a marathon this spring. Steve Sakry likes the track. On the road, he had the best 15K and the best 4M. He took his spot, ninth, by winning the John Robbins 4M in 28:47. Eleventh ranked Dan Eddy followed Ryan to Anacostia earning two of his six wins there, including a mid-May triumph in 22:08. Twelfth ranked Bob Burns picked up two wins including a March victory against Rosenburg, 22:07 to 22:23, for the only setback in Rosenburg’s record. Tom Vistosky takes the last spot in the top fifteen with his Petersburg 5K in 22:37 to make the top half of the thirty-one qualifiers good enough to make the 60-64 standard. 70-74 Men Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 1:14:34, 10K = 44:52 (Eric Melby) Bill Hart joined the division and ran his only two races on the opening weekend. He ran a very fine TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 38:15 but was spanked by ten, yes ten division runners from out of the area, including the winner Lloyd Hansen from Utah who ran an unbelievable 32:35. The next day, Jim Noone won the fastest of his six wins at the Lucky Leprechaun 5K to edge Hart for another title. Hart came in first that morning at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:54:50, slower than all of Noone’s races. Noone would have his

next best race at the hilly Devotion Mother's Day 4M on a dreary rainy morning in 30:33. Just as with his 5K, he was a minute slower than last year as he signs off from the division, winning it for the last time. Third ranked Joseph Stirt is piling up the wins, ten of them, in his new division. He started the season at the Sugar Hollow Bridges 5K in 24:01. By the end of the spring, he was winning the Rotary Ramblin Rabbit 5K in 23:34. Fourth ranked Bill Senseney was second to Noone’s 49:27 at the Apple Blossom 10K with his own 51:03. He also wo n the PVTC Easter Classic 10K two weeks earlier in 51:12. Noone won the accompanying 5K in 23:40. Fifth place Pim Brouwers was second at the Pike's Peek 10K in 52:26 just ahead of tenth ranked Richard Jefferson (52:39) but he earns his stripes racing the Parkinson Awareness 5K in 24:25. Former champion Ronnie Wong has been inconsistent for the last year but always come up big at the big events. In addition to seven winns, including the Sole for the City 10K in 51:52, he ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:24:50 to take sixth place. Right there with him in seventh place, Jonathan Cannon ran the Sugar Hollow Bridges 10K in 51:19. James Mort makes his début winning the Prison Break 10K in 51:48 to place himself in eighth. Cannon was tops at the Park to Park Half Marathon in 1:55:38. Still, ninth place George Raley, who ran the Salisbury Half Marathon in 1:56:04, shows that the competition is fierce in this expanding division. Michael Cassidy ran a solid George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:27:51 to take eleventh place. Wilson Trueheart starts his division title quest with a triumph over longtime rival Wong at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K, 25:32 to 25:40 to cap the top dozen qualifiers. 75-79 Men White Bank Classic 5 Miler 40:30, 10K = 50:30

Second place Art Gregory aged up and blasted the rolling hills at the Forest of Needwood 5M in a swift 40:41. By the end of the month, Ben Dyer upped the ante at the White Bank Classic 5 Miler in 40:03 to again win the spring. Gregory, who has always been an elite middle-distance runner, impressed with a win at the B&A Trail Half Marathon in 1:54:26. Two weeks after Dyer ran the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K, he confirmed his title at the Carytown 10K in 50:50. Third ranked Harold Rosen had the next three best races, all of them were wins at top flight races. At the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, he ran 1:26:46 well ahead of sixth ranked John Churchman’s 1:38:31. At Pike’s Peek, Rosen was tops in 53:30. Frank Snyder, who had seven wins at College Park Park Runs, was next at the 10K in 1:01:10 to take the eighth position. Lou Shapiro takes the eleventh spot by besting tenth ranked Jerry Frankenheim as third in the event, 1:02:48 to 1:04:58. Frankenheim gets the lean because earlier on the rolling hills of Seneca State Park at the MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K he had beaten Shapiro 1:02:24 to 1:08:58. In late April, Churchman improved at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:35:46 to beat a former division winner Malcolm O’Hagan. O’Hagan

He completed the Osprey 5K in 27:01 to confirm his spot. Ninth ranked James Morse had his best race at the Ashland Railroad 10K in 1:02:04. Robert Callahan cracks the top dozen with his Run for their Lives 5K in 30:12. Next in line, thirteenth ranked Jack Starnes ran the longest race, racing the Union Gap Half Marathon in 2:19:07. The division settled back a bit to thirty-seven qualified for the division as a dozen runners aged up. The first of the summer Jim Noone aged up and will be aiming at this division’s crown. 80-84 Men Forest of Needwood 5M 44:35, 10K = 56:13 The top four runners have all been age group champions but lately the gravitas seems to going to John Clarke alone. Last year he had the two best races, improving of his Forest of Needwood 5M at the Germantown 5M. This year he improved three seconds at the Needwood event but was much slower at Germantown. Perhaps it was because he had the group’s third best race, winning the Frederick Half marathon two weeks before in 2:08:17. Runner-up John Elliott had a solid TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 48:24. Tenth ranked Thomas McQueeney had the only other 8K of the top ten runners with his 8K Race to Benefit The Haven in 54:46. Elliott gained his spot on the final weekend with his Open the Pool 5K in 28:15. It took down third place Doug Morris’ Best of Year time set at the March Madness 5K in 28:28. Morris had held the top spot from the first week until the last week. Elliott would lose his spot after a mere four days as it was broken on the first day of the summer season. Fourth ranked Stan Neumann was okay with racing a 5K as did most of the division but he prefers the longer races. Only four others ran as long as ten miles. Only 17th ranked Chris Catoe joined Neumann in the challenge of the half. Neumann ran the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 2:31:40 to Catoe’s 3:03:00. It was Catoe’s best race. Neumann excelled at the Tim Kennard 10M River Run in 1:39:34. Fifth place Thomas Spasojevich is king at the Park Run at Deep Run 5K where he ran an excellent 29:27. At the double out and back 5K Park Run in Kensington Herb Parson edges seventh place Ronald Chiariello twice but not by much. Parsons ran his best in 30:23 while Chiariello was a mere six seconds in arrears. Eighth and ninth place goes to two regular competitors at the PRR= race series. Maynard Weyers comes out on top defeating Ken Quincy at the Lucky Leprechaun 5K, 30:50 to 31:42. Weyers usually comes out on top but his

85-89 Men Pike's Peek 10K 1:05:32 George Yannakakis continues to dominate the division with the five best races. He is racing a bit shorter lately but his commanding Pike’s Peek 10K in 1:05:32 was easily his best event. Note that more than half of this field ran a 10K in the spring. Yannakakis was the only runner to go longer, running the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:50:51. Runner-up Jack McMahon holds on firmly to his spot, running the Capital for a Day 5K in 38:48. Third ranked Ernest Schillnger

was one of just three racers with a second race. Both of his races were 10Ks. He ran best at the Yorktown Victory 10K in 1:26:44. The Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K is really a series of time trials so gun times listed are virtually meaningless. The last four spots (10-13) go by place starting with tenth ranked Allen Pois, followed by Russell Johnson, Philip Thomas, and finally Ed Longest. The only other head-to-head matchup was when fourth ranked Gilbert Rosenthal bested sixth ranked Gene Morris at the Port to Fort 6K, 55:06 to 57:35. Between these two fifth place Don Taylor performed the St. Patrick’s Day 5K in 46:16 to start the season. The following month in the deep south, seventh ranked PJ Mendola raced the Joe & Sue Moore Memorial Scholarship 5K in 52:19. The eighth position goes to Bruce Roth, 88, who ran 5Ks on consecutive weeks in May. The first week was the best at the CCA Pace Run 5K in 55:14. Ninth ranked Dan Taylor was deceptionally far back in 24th spot but the division was seventy and older at the Don't Sit on Colon Cancer 5K. His time of 55:33 was right behind Roth. Fox Hill Community 5K 56:33, 10K = 1:57:58 Robert White, 95, is really in this next five-year division but track racer Dixon Hemphill has experience racing with three-digit age groupers there. His Yorktown race this spring was shorter, an 8K, not a 10K, that White finished in 1:45:20. He won the division with his Fox Hill Community 5K in 56:33. Hemphill was runner-up with still another 5K at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom. National Class times (80%) = 1:15:50 for 90-94; 1:42:57 for 95 and older

Open Women Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 53:40, 10K = 32:24 First things first, Bethany Sachtleben crushes the division with a tenth overall at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 53:40, easily fast enough to make the men’s division as well. Third ranked Julia Roman-Duval also had a men’s open class time with her 56:30. She won big as overall at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:16:28. Keira D’Amato destroyed the field at the Lucky Leprechaun 5K in 16:38 by more than three minutes, even beating all of the men but that was not yet enough. The second weekend she had the unenviable task of trying to run down Sachtleben at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K. Sachtleben won in 32:38. D’Amato was third overall in 33:37, a men’s elite qualifier, to pass Roman-Duval for the runner-up spot. Fourth ranked Perry Shoemaker had the second fastest half, racing the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon for second overall in 1:17:46. Like Roman Duval, she is an Olympic Marathon qualifier. She finishes one minute behind her at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 57:30 though spotting her a dozen years. Sixth ranked Hannah Cocchiaro was next qualifier across the line in 58:41. Fifth ranked Shauneen Werlinger beat eighth place Jennifer Paul at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon, 1:17:57 to 1:18:15. Also in between them in seventh place, Laura Hanson was second overall at the Charlottesville 10M in 59:01. Paul was the overall champion at the Al Lewis 10M in 1:00:10. At Pike’s Peek, Cocchiaro was second in 35:47, ahead of fourth place Silvia Baage’s 36:53. Baage earns eleventh place with her Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 59:38. Ninth ranked Mary Reiser dispensed with tenth place Sarah Patrick with the smallest of margins, 58:59 to 59:01. Reiser finished second behind Cocchiaro’s 17:17 at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K with 17:30. A month later, Reiser won it all at the Sole for the City 10K in 36:30. Patrick had run the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:21:50. Both twelfth place Julie Hartenbach (1:20:56) and seventeenth place Maura Carroll (1:21:35) had beaten Patrick but they could not stop her from returning the favor with their Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:00:04 and 1:00:18 respectively. Fourteenth and fifteenth place is awarded to Sarah Zieve (1:00:08) and Caitlyn Tateishi (1:00:09) who knifed in ahead of Carroll. Ann Mazur Robb picked up four wins as well as a fine Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:20:26 to take the thirteenth spot. Kelly Calway moves to sixteenth place when she improved on her overall at the National Women's Half

Marathon in 1:21:48 to finish a close second behind Hartenbach at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile, 1:00:17 to 1:00:36. Selvi Rajagopal was runner-up at the half in 1:23:31 to take thirty-third place. The best of two wins for eighteenth place Ashley Thomasey was at the Park to Park Half Marathon in 1:20:47. Megan Cunningham was second overall at the Yuengling Shamrock Festival Marathon in 2:51:04 for nineteenth place, while Julianne Quinn was twenty-first place for her runner-up spot at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 28:58. Quinn would be edged by a second at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 1:00:28 to 1:00:29 by twentieth place Margaret Johnston but they both headed twenty-third place Katie Read (1:00:45). Twenty-second goes to Molly Applegate for her sixth place overall at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 36:39. Still piling in from the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:00:57 is twenty-fourth Kirstin Lemos and Natalie Patterson in 1:01:08 is twenty-fifth, along with the 40-44 division winner, Lindsay Wilkins, who ran 1:01:35 for twenty-sixth. Wilkins was even better as second master at Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:21:49 by a whisker ahead of Elizabeth Reynolds (1:21:50) who took twenty-seventh place. Twenty-ninth ranked Megan DiGregorio (1:22:20) was elected the Baltimore Road Runners Runner of the Year for 2018. Alayna Bigabal takes the twenty eighth position at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:01:37. She was third overall. Leah Schubel has the next best race, winning it all at the 5K for K9 in 17:57 but takes thirty-first place behind thirtieth ranked Tressa Breindel, she of three wins, including the Carytown 10K in 37:41 ahead of Schubel (40:28) Breindel again prevailed at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K, 38:16 to 39:53. Jessica McGuire settles into thirty-second place at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:02:14. Sara Baugh takes thirty-fifth place with 37:55 and second overall at the Carytown 10K. At the Oldfields Half Marathon, Jackie Range triumphed over the entire field in 1:24:03 to take the thirty-fourth spot. Gina McNamara wins the first Crystal City Fridays 5K in 18:11 to round off the first three dozen. Another monster division with eighty-eight qualifiers. Of them, an amazing thirty-one came from the others age groups, led by Julia Roman-Duval (3rd) and the eldest qualifier, the amazing Perry Shoemaker, 48, (4th). Both of them have qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials. National Class times (80%) = 37:55 – World Class (90%) = 33:51

19 & Younger Women Salisbury Half Marathon 1:26:33, 10K = 39:07 (Annabel Hofman) Our champion Madeline Bergeron had a solid race at the Lucky Leprechaun 5K in 20:34. Of course, that course at Fairfax Corner is known to be long. A week later, at the Herndon High School 5K she would win it all and take the crown with her time of 19:18. Runner-up Katie Borland dove right in on the first day at the March Madness 5K in 19:30. The next week she captured the fastest half at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:32:35. The second best half goes to Madelyn Tatum who was an amazing second overall at the Petersburg Half Marathon in 1:33:01. She made ninth place as she finished a place behind eighth ranked Leah Kappel (43:19) at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K. Places three through six were all overall winners. Third goes to Christina Skinner at the Triple R Run for the Ranch 5K in 19:37. Fourth is handed out to Audrey Shepley for her Run the Rocks 5K in 19:50. Close behind in fifth place Finley Stewart did her thing at the Anchor Dash 5K in 19:54. Mary Raterman finishes the parade with her Broad Run 5K in 20:06. Seventh place Leah Kannan was one of only three non-5Ks for the top thirteen runners. She ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:09:41. Tenth ranked Emme Cate Heilbrun rn her fastest of two overall wins at the We Believe in You 5K in 20:24. Thirteenth place Hannah Altizer had her fastest of two overall wins at the Highlander 5K in 20:36. Twelfth ranked Katie Hirsche also ran a 20:36. She finished second overall in the only race in six that she did not win out right. Just ahead of these two is the middle of the three Jean sisters, Soreena. Naturally, she offered up two overall wins as well, including the Ram Farm 5K in, you guessed it, 20:36. She broke up the tie with a third overall at the big Run for the D. O. G. 5K in 20:35. Thirty-six women qualified for the rankings. National Class times (80%) = 38:01

A month later, Baage was back to try the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M and ran an excellent 59:38. Third ranked Kelly Calway was second overall at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:00:36, ahead of McGuire (1:04:58) and tenth place Stephanie Selmer (1:05:25). Calway would win it all at the National Women's Half Marathon in May with 1:21:48. Fourth goes to Ashley Thomasey who won it all at the Be Bold 4M in 23:07 as well as a brilliant Park to Park Half Marathon title spot in 1:20:47. If the race title

starts with MCRRC, such as the MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K, chances are good that Lemos won it all there. She did, this time in 38:10. Bridget Stacey was the ninth woman at the massive Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 38:26 to earn eighth place. Jacqueline Morgan bolstered her runner-up spot at the Holton Elementary 5K in 19:07 with a fine Carytown 10K in 39:25, taking the ninth position in the rankings. Selmer ran the St. Patrick’s Day in Washington, DC in 19:35. The next three were decided at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K on the first Sunday. Lena Mathews earns eleventh with 18:57. Twelfth ranked Amanda Beal’s age group win at the Pike’s Peek 10K in 39:58 was a wee slower than thirteenth ranked Hyunsun Reilly’s third overall at the Frederick Half Marathon in 1:28:05. However, Beal prevailed at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K, 19:20 to 19:21 to turn the tide. Thirty-three women qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 38:11

40-44 Women Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon 1:21:49, 10K = 36:58 The Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon has so many stars from all over the world that even to be second master makes you good enough win the division. Lindsay Wilkins did just that in a fine 1:21:49, ahead of fifth place Cristina Burbach (1:24:51) and sixth ranked Jacqueline Gruendel (1:25:27). These ladies swear by the half marathon. Third ranked Claire Heasman was looking for more worlds to conquer after dominating Frederick County. She picked the Rock N Roll Half Marathon, finishing in an excellent 1:24:11. Forty-four women qualified for the division and almost half of those women are forty-four. Fifteenth ranked Lisa Reichmann was at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:31:53. Ninth ranked Tracy Dzibela stepped up big at the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in 1:27:58, ahead of eleventh ranked Amy Huerta (1:30:38). Huerta had finished second overall at the Park to Park Half Marathon in 1:28:56 just three weeks earlier, beating thirteenth ranked another Tracy (West) who ran 1:31:51. Did somebody say B&A Trail Half Marathon? The reigning queen of Westminster County, Sherry Stick is known for big time overall wins, often including all the men as well, at the 5K. Her best of five overall wins was the Great 5K in 18:19. She added a second overall at the Blue Jay 5K Race for Lymphoma in 18:18. Her seventh race was that same B&A Trail Half Marathon in 1:30:30 for second overall. That would have been enough to match Heasman for third until the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M can into play. Wilkins confirmed her title with another victory in a huge international field with 1:01:35. Heasman was next master in 1:03:05. She will soon be continuing her battle with Burbach (1:03:17) in the 45-49 division. Tenth ranked Toni Diegoli (1:06:13) led a slew of other fast runners racing this ten miler. For the runner-up spot Tressa Breindel accumulated an overall win in each month. In March she defeated seventh ranked Rachel Wheeler Northup, who was third overall, at the White Bank Classic 5 Miler, 30:36 to 31:03. In late April

Page 40: 50 Plus Club Best of 2015 Best of 2016 Best of 2017 Best ... · The men rose more than a third to sixty-two, well off their record of seventy-five, also from 2013. There are seventy-three

Breindel ran the fastest 10K, winning the Carytown 10K in 37:41. Wheeler Northup was top master in 38:51. Eighth ranked Kate Gardner finished ahead of Dzibela (40:33) with her 39:33. Briendel won the Stratford Hills 10K on the final week in May breaking the tape in 39:12. In between all of this was the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K. Masters runners do not win this big-time event. However, Breindel was eighth overall in a sterling 38:16. Wheeler Northup ran 39:03, just ahead of Garner (39:23). Not that many of these racers took on the marathon as it can mess up the rest of your spring. Twelfth place Jennifer Moran ran early as second master at the Yuengling Shamrock Festival Marathon in 3:10:51. Biding her time until May, she reprised at the Elizabeth River Run 10K for second overall in 40:56. Emily Pierce ran the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:31:13 to take fourteenth place. Forty-three women qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 39:03

45-49 Women Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 57:30, 10K = 34:43 We mentioned that twenty-one women are moving into the division soon. That may be like jumping off a cliff as Perry Shoemaker is still there for a couple more years, stamping her name in the record books. Then again, she really still has her sights on the open division. That does not mean 20-34; it means anybody good enough to make the elite grade regardless of age. Shoemaker proved that yet again by dropping eight minutes off her marathon PR and qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Trials with an outstanding 2:43:33. We agree with her when she said, “All of my stats pointed to the fact that I could do this.” For example, how about second overall at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:17:46. She had done a warm-up event the weekend before winning the Pot of Gold 10K in 36:26, faster than any master in the region, at any age. At the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, she dominated in a swift 57:30, marred only by being about eighty meters short. In the last twenty-five years only three qualifiers have had an age grading of 95% or better. Shoemaker’s 96.4% is the highest. Her 10 miler was just short of qualifying for the men’s open division. (Judy Doldorf was misidentified as being 44 for part of the season when in fact she was 46) Sadly, many races fail to list ages sometimes in favor of age groups which can span across the normal 5-year ranges or put them on a separate

Page 42: 50 Plus Club Best of 2015 Best of 2016 Best of 2017 Best ... · The men rose more than a third to sixty-two, well off their record of seventy-five, also from 2013. There are seventy-three

page. This changes things greatly. Doldorf’s two races, in the same division, move her from tenth in the 40-44 division (which she was not in) to the runner-up spot in the 45-49 division. She bested third ranked Hillary Cairns at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon with an excellent 1:28:20. Hillary Cairns is back to competitive racing. She ran the Rock N Roll Half Marathon a few strides behind Stefani Watterson (1:29:50) as well as fifth ranked Jennifer Daskal (1:29:56). But her 1:30:11 was well ahead of tenth ranked Cathy Cosner (1:36:50). If you are looking for redemption, it can be found in West Potomac Park, racing the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M. Cairns mobilized and returned the favor, vanquishing Watterson, 1:06:41 to 1:07:12 to take the third spot. Doldorf stayed strong finishing as third at the event in 1:05:40, while Daskal had a tough race finishing tenth and falling behind Cairns. Thirteenth ranked Suzanne Himes was there, finishing in 1:12:21. Watterson took a couple more shots to move up from fourth place, racing the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in 1:31:06. Her best try was a late April jaunt from Mount Vernon at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile. Her time on the full 10 Mile run was in 1:07:17 was good for a win. Twelfth place Monica Sanchez nipped Himes, 1:12:59 to 1:13:24 to move past her. That brings us to Pike’s Peek and Lisa Reichmann’s début to the division. She earns seventh defeating ninth ranked Kaari Linask, 42:17 to 42:52. Brenda Schrank still rules the Shenandoah Valley and picks up sixth place as top master at the Apple Blossom 10K in 42:07. Faye Weaver slides into eighth place, racing the Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 20:20. Surprisingly, it was the fastest 5K for the season, just ahead of Schrank’s overall win at the Green Circle 5K in 20:29. Eleventh place Shinobu Kusakabe was tops at the Al Lewis 10M at its new home in Washington, DC after decades in Kensington. Her time was a very solid 1:12:18. Sanchez bested fifteenth ranked Debbie Goodpasture at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon, 1:37:53 to 1:38:10. Though it was Goodpasture’s best race, she gets her place behind Amy McCann who defeated her at the Carytown 10K, 44:22 to 44:42. Cathy Ross was the overall winner at the Heroes and Villains 5K In 21:22 to take the sixteenth position. Thirty-one women qualified for the division. 50-54 Women Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon 1:31:47, 10K = 41:28 Kim Isler was not at the last PRR race in June but we let the cat out of the bag there to her racing team mates that she had won the division pre-publication of the rankings. Isler had by far her best effort on her longest race the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon to start the spring. She ran a 7:00 pace – 1:31:47. Later in the season, she would run the Devotion Mother's Day 4M in 28:20, a 7:05 pace, albeit a hilly course. Still, her third overall at the flat-as-can-be Ringing in Hope 10K in 44:58 was just a 7:04. It makes one wonder how fast she would be if she moved up to the marathon. Tenth place Anne Spillane was there at the Shamrock Festival half in 1:38:41 as well as Mardiny Ung who takes thirteenth place with her time of 1:42:03. Ung also did the 8K there that weekend. Even multi-year champion Alisa Harvey got into the action, racing it in 1:40:35. That is not to say that this former Olympic class 800M racer and indoor masters mile American record holder cannot run long. After all, she ran the Cherry

Page 44: 50 Plus Club Best of 2015 Best of 2016 Best of 2017 Best ... · The men rose more than a third to sixty-two, well off their record of seventy-five, also from 2013. There are seventy-three

Blossom 10M in 55:35 back in 1998. However, it was less a surprise when she earned her eighth position with an overall win at the Jaguar 5K in 21:10. A week before her big Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M race in 1:09:28, runner-up Lydia Pelliccia had won the Al Lewis 10M in 1:13:09. Third ranked Denise Knickman went the other way as top master at the Tim Kennard 10M River Run in 1:10:42 two weeks before she finished the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:12:14. It was enough to keep her ahead of fifth ranked Christina Morganti who finished first in 1:12:05 but lost an age group placement with a net time. The same could be said for Samantha Cole who ran the race in 1:15:09 but redeemed herself to take fourth place with a win at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:11:05. Next after her across the line was eleventh place Kerry Rodgers in 1:15:24. Amy Sachs takes sixth pace with the seldom run distance of 6K. Her Port to Fort 6K time was 25:21. Shannon Smith takes on the St. Patrick’s Day 10K in 43:57 to earn seventh place. In late May, ninth ranked Paula Pels had less distance to go to get to the event for another overall win at the Kensington Park Run 5K in 21:19 where she held the overall record until mid-May as the course moved to Cedar Lane. She also has an overall win at the Fletcher's Cove Park Run 5K in 21:54. Karen McClintick won the Carytown 10K in 45:54 to take twelfth place. At the Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 22:08 Teri Welch earns fourteenth place. Kim Votava ran the Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 1:42:48 to match Lauren Seligman’s George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:17:17 exactly. That was nearly as fast as Ung’s half in Virginia Beach and she did best Ung at the 8K the day before, 37:08 to 39:57. That was the tie breaker over Seligman for fifteenth place who also ran the Four Courts 4M in 31:49. Seventeenth ranked Victoria Harness is right in the mix, racing the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in 1:42:39 Fifty-seven women qualified for the division. National Class times (80%) = 42:50

55-59 Women Rotary Ramblin Rabbit 5K 20:18, 10K = 42:16 Cindy Conant is still on the mend and she gave way to the Kendall Tata avalanche. Tata had the three best races and seven of the top nine times. Conant still set the age group record and the third fastest time at the Kensington Park Run 5K in 20:47 that she won outright. The next week on the rolling hills of Brookeville, she was second overall at the Capital for a Day 5K in 20:45. Tata was everywhere boldly opening season at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 33:46, ahead of third ranked Karla Havens (35:31). A week later, she wins the Charlottesville 10 Mile in 1:12:15. In May, she was even more impressive. A week after winning the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in 1:38:11, she had the season’s fastest race, the Rotary Ramblin Rabbit 5K for an overall win in 20:18. Havens upped her game for the place clincher at the Run for the D. O. G. 5K in 21:23, well ahead of fifteenth place Mary Jo Bailey (23:28). Fourth ranked Martha Merz ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:14:02, ahead of sixth ranked Margarita Brose (1:14:53). Later in the month, she won her age group at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:14:41. Fifth ranked Julie Hayden was third overall at the Broad Run 5K in 21:27. She also ran the Lucky Leprechaun 5K in 22:16. Havens ran as top master at the Yorktown Victory 10K in 45:03 and Brose ran the Crystal City Fridays 5K #4 in 21:52 as these four racers were nearly interchangeable. Kelly Dworak had a fine St. Patrick's Half Marathon in 1:40:34, ahead of Brose’s Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:42:43 run the following day to take seventh place. Jill Snyder won it all at the Junior League of Annapolis 5K in 22:03 to fill the eighth position. Sarah Sinsabuagh ran the 5K for K9 in 22:16 to take ninth place. Tenth goes Amber Radar who ran the White Bank Classic 5 Miler in 36:58, ahead of seventeenth place Terri Gerloff (39:00). Radar also beat Gerloff at the Carytown 10K, 46:55 to 51:04 though Gerloff was then sixty. Prolific racer Sushila Nanda had nine wins but none faster than her Palio Di Siena 5K in 22:40 and eleventh place was hers. As with nearly everyone, Kathy Cea improved her hilly MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K (48:21) with her Pike’s Peek 10K (47:28). It gets her into twelfth place. Thirteenth place Susan Kim fits right between those two

60-64 Women Charlottesville 10 Mile 1:18:30, 10K = 47:11 Hosni Haghighian wrapped up the division as March waned with an excellent Charlottesville 10 Mile in 1:18:30. Then she treated herself to a sub 4:00 Charlottesville Marathon (3:56:03). A ton of people raced the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M but only two had times that would qualify for a top thirty placement. Runner-up Catherine Baker improved on her 48:29 at the MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K to finish fourth at the 10 miler in 1:19:43. Third place Ida Draim had an even

better jolt after a DCRRC Fort Hunt 10K in 50:18 to finish 10 miles in 1:20:25. Baker was tremendous at Pike’s Peek in 47:57 but nobody else in the top twenty raced there. Fifth ranked Mary Lowe Mayhugh was very prolific with thirteen wins and aced her spot with the fastest 5K of the year at the JCADA 5K in 23:41. Former champion Carolyn Harrison was off her normal brilliance and dropped to fourth though she was third overall at the Fort Eustis 10K to start the spring in 49:01. She would race the fastest half at the Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 1:49:16. Sixth ranked Mary Gentry was at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M but her gun time was way off the mark. She earns her spot with a second overall at the Taps 5K in 23:46. Seventh ranked Peggy Mowbray raced the Sugar Hollow Bridges 10K in 49:45 as the last women to have a men’s 60-64 qualifying time. That put her ahead of thirteenth place Kiyoko Asao-Ragosta who ran 52:05, as well as fourteenth place Cynthia Lorenzoni (53:03). Leslie Bartoshesky edges Nancy Hill’s 24:42 at the Music Boosters 5K to take eighth place with her Tim Kennard 5K River Run in 24:40. Next in line in tenth place, Daniela Miscan is picking up steam with five wins, including the Frederick Twilight 5K in 24:47. Leigh Peck was also in Salisbury racing. She did the longer Tim Kennard 10M River Run in 1:26:15 to take eleventh place. Twelfth place Sue Bapties had her best of two wins at the Run High Bridge 5K in 25:03. Lorenzoni would also run the Charlottesville 10 Mile in 1:27:08 to stay ahead of Deb Wolfe and her Race for Grace 5K in 25:14. Next up in sixteenth place Layne Ferguson was second master at the Appalachian Power Festival 10K in 52:38. Eighteenth ranked Nina Fisher ended March at the B&A Trail Half Marathon in 1:58:21. By the end of April, Leslie Rigby-Kash had caught her for seventeenth position with her Carytown 10K in 53:25. A massive seventy-three runners qualified for the division. 65-69 Women Creeper 10M 1:24:42, 10K = 50:42 (Joy Scruggs) Betty Blank can’t seem to stop her winning ways. She registered seven of the top ten times, including the three fastest events. Runner-up Barbara Mathewson upped the scoring with the Fort Eustis 10K in 51:58 and Blank followed the next day with her slowest race at the DCRRC Fort Hunt 10K in 54:49. By the end of the month Blank was back on track, winning the Al Lewis 5M in 40:43. Meanwhile, Mathewson was off her game and did not get back until the final week, racing the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 56:45. In late May, Blank was still able to churn out 7 miles in less than an hour. Blank is always at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M and wins there again. This time in 1:25:14. In the crazy fantasy world of net timing Elizabeth Sadoff receives ninth for getting to the finish line eight seconds after tenth ranked Ginny Hughes (1:32:43). Sadoff was awarded fourth and Hughes sixth. That means someone placed between them though she may have crossed the finish line ahead or behind either or both of them. Third place Linda Gulick followed up her SPCA 5K in 26:42, ahead of thirteenth ranked Paula Davidson’s 27:18 with a fine White Bank Classic 5 Miler in 42:54.

She would need that speed as fourth ranked Marie Reid is getting super charged. In March, her Park Run 5Ks were in the 30s. In April, she dropped into the lower and lower 29s. In May, she tried a 28, quickly moved into the 27s and by the end of the month had blasted a 26:02 at Anacostia. Throwing out her Roosevelt Island jaunt in 33:00, she improved 16 percent in just two months that moved her up forty-four places in the rankings. In May, Hannah Philips ran the Semper Fi 5K in 26:31 to take fifth place. Sixth place Linda Hannam had run the Pike’s Peek 10K in 55:20, ahead of eleventh ranked Suzie Loutoo’s 56:09 in a tightly crowded field. Eighth place Maria Shields struck first at the B&A Trail Half Marathon, finishing in 2:03:39. Two months later Penny Williams pressed past her, winning the St. Michael's Run Festival Half Marathon in 2:03:29. Between the two events, Williams had bested Shields at the Cinco de Mayo 5M, 46:52 to 50:04. Twelfth place Christie Wamsley ran the Carytown 10K in 56:48 a tick ahead of Davidson but Davidson’s second 5K in 28:00 was well ahead of Wamsley best of two halves, the Petersburg Half Marathon in 2:12:00. Sixteenth ranked Therese Wisniecki ran the Park to Park Half Marathon in 2:08:18. While Wamsley was racing the half in Virginia Beach, Kathleen Doswell was earning fourteenth place at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 45:10. Fifteenth place goes to Marian Fegeley for her St. Mary's Hospice 5K in 27:40. The qualifying times are the same as always for the division but they may be too easy for these women as there were a record seventy-seven qualifiers. National Class times (80%) = 52:08

70-74 Women Elizabeth River Run 10K 53:06 Betty Brothers has always been considered unbeatable except maybe by herself. She won the Yuengling Shamrock Festival Marathon in 4:30:11 to take an early lead. The marathon rarely gives back good 10K equivalences. Oft times division winner Alice Franks is on the mend and had a breakthrough MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K in 58:47. Her Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:31:27 was a huge boost and sent her to a mid-season lead ahead of third ranked Janice Jacobs (1:39:38) and fifth ranked Pat Welch (1:40:58), as well as ninth ranked Christy St. Clair (1:48:53). With high confidence and perfect weather Franks blasted an even faster Pike’s Peek 10K in 54:58. Fourth ranked Toby McGinn had Welch’s number and eases by her there, 1:01:22 to 1:02:07. Two weeks later Brothers was rested enough to race again but picks another long one, winning the Run for the Animals Half Marathon in a solid 2:06:01. At that point her title seemed to be in jeopardy. With two weeks left in the spring that was all the rest she was going to get. She came roaring home at the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 53:06 to snatch back the crown she had lost last spring. Sixth ranked Barbara Biasi got cooking the first week at the Fort Eustis 10K in 1:01:35. A week later, she matched that in the shortest event of the Shamrock Festival, the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 48:30. Maryann Lloyd takes seventh and is becoming a fixture at Potomac River Running events. She even

took down the venerable Pat Welch at the hilly Devotion Mother's Day 4M in the rain, 39:38 to 40:24. The Queens Lake 5K is usually good for fast times and eighth ranked Roswitha Goossens-Winter ran her best time there in 31:23. She also finished the Yorktown Victory 10K in 1:07:07 behind Biasi’s 1:02:23. Tenth place points to Ruth Hens for her B&A Trail Half Marathon in 2:26:07. Up by more than 35 percent, forty-one runners made the division. National Class times (80%) = 56:10

75-79 Women Pike's Peek 10K 1:03:29 Karen Kautz was really ready for the new division. She did her test run on the hilly MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K in Seneca Creek Park in late March. She could not have known that this race would be enough for the title. She was going after it at the Pike’s Peek 10K. The weather was perfect and even though the course was in its third and slowest iteration, she crushed the field in a whooping 1:03:29. Linda Yarr joined the division with a bright Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 1:57:48 beating sixth ranked Wilma King (2:13:30). King was not able to improve on her Rock N Roll Half Marathon at 2:51:46. Yarr did improve at Pike’s Peek in 1:09:00 for the third fastest race and runner-up in the division. Thirteenth ranked Jeanette Novak was fourth there for her best race in 1:23:17. This mega racer won 16 of her 27 qualifiers and is again on pace for 200 races this year that would make it three years in a row. Long distance Molly (Sherwood) won the B&A Trail Half Marathon in 2:39:51 and bested Yarr’s 10M at the other Cherry race, the Cherry Pit 10M in 1:57:38 to take third place. That race finally stopped being raced the same day as the much bigger Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M. Mary Kate Berglund’s official time at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K time trials was too difficult to parse. Still, the former champ had to settle for fourth with her best race being the Apple Blossom 10K in 1:11:30. Oddly in the senior division, it was the eighth fastest race the first produced a 5K. Fifth place Francy Wiggs ran the ODU Monarch 5K in 35:43. Seventh place Rosemary Schwartzbard can usually be found racing the weekly Park Run 5K on Roosevelt Island. Her best time was 37:22. It is the toughest local Park Run event. Second toughest is the home course in Leakin Park just south of Baltimore of eighth place Jo Orser, who ran 37:27 to nearly catch Schwartzbard. Ninth ranked Mandy Whalen is usually a prolific racer as well. She was best at the Bunny Hop 5K in 38:45. The division doubled to twenty-two qualifiers.

Williams, who races twenty-five times a year, waited a day before taking the title away with her Pot of Gold 10K in 1:09:35. A week later, she piled on with her best 5K, the Lucky Leprechaun 5K in 33:29. Hughes had the next best 10K, racing the Apple Blossom 10K in 1:16:36. Third place Tami Graf is nearly always the most prolific racer but has moved to middle distance races more and more. She started the season at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 1:04:40. Fourth place Pauline Ely ran all six of her 5K races in the Tidewater region. Her best race was the Queens Lake 5K in 49:03. Twenty-four other women ran just on event in the spring. Close behind her Geraldine Farias finishes the JCADA 5K in 57:03. The next two runners are closing on a new division. Ethel Jo Hickman in fourth finishes the Ashland Railroad 5K. Right there in fifth, Sally Paschal finishes the Hospice of the Piedmont Run and Remember 5K in 59:21. Joining the new age group after decades of racing, sixth ranked Joanne Mallet races the MCRRC Memorial 4M in 1:27:44. In seventh place, Diane Gibson completes the RASAC Phil's Survivor 5K. Rankings Explained - What It Is, Who Does It, How We Do It, and Where We are

Going

The goal of the runner rankings is to rank the best runners of Washington, DC, Maryland,

and Virginia, in five-year age groups, for the purpose of stimulating competition in the

Washington region. Runners are ranked only according to performances in rated races.

To be rated, a race must meet the following criteria:

* Take place in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia

* Full results listed on the Web Site

* Must list age (and preferably also city and state of residence) of all runners

* Standard distance--5K, 4M, 8K, 5M, 10K, 12K, 15K, 10M, 20K, 1/2 Marathon, 25K,

30K, 20M, or Marathon

* Road race or cross-country

* Gun Time

To be included, a race must meet all of the above criteria. There will be no exceptions. If

you place well in a race and want it included in the rankings, be sure to ask the race

director to e-mail the complete results to us at [email protected] so that the race can be

counted in the runner rankings.

Sometimes runners are confused by the race tracking terms. Chip time simply means that

it was electronically timed, not manually. Gun time is the official time. Net time, which is

confused with chip time, is merely a feel good time which is tracked by when the

runner’s chip first crosses the starting line. Net time will always be faster than the official

gun time. Runners are welcome to note net time for their personal use but it has no place

in the rankings. In large races, where it is impossible for runners to get to the start for

many minutes after the official gun start, we do allow a net time to count as one of the

necessary two qualifiers to get a runner to be evaluated. However, that time and any net

based age award placement in that race does NOT count towards their placement in the

rankings.

Runners will be ranked by age divisions for both men and women, with the divisions

being open, 19 & younger, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-

79, 80-84, 85-89, and 90 & older.

The rankings are established using a nearly completely objective rating procedure. A

preliminary sort, followed by an intensive analysis of competitive results, forms the

rankings. The preliminary sort is based on the number of qualifying marks and best times.

The final ranking is based on head-to-head competitive results against the other top

placers (fifty percent), with time playing a major but secondary role (forty percent). Our

general philosophy is that competition is about beating other runners and we intend to

Page 60: 50 Plus Club Best of 2015 Best of 2016 Best of 2017 Best ... · The men rose more than a third to sixty-two, well off their record of seventy-five, also from 2013. There are seventy-three

60

place an increased emphasis on competitive results.

To qualify for the end-of-year rankings, runner must run two qualifying races each in

each of at least two of the four ranking periods. A runner can qualify for two different age

groups in a year. As with the individual seasons, a runner can use a qualifying race from

the elder division if it is fast enough to help qualify them for the younger division. Thus,

the minimum number of races two double dip and qualify for two divisions would be six

races. For example, a 60-64 runner run a qualifying race twice in the winter or spring and

then turns sixty-five after the winter and/or the two 60-64 qualifying races in the spring

and qualifies for two of the next three seasons with times fast enough for qualification in

the 60-64 division. A preliminary sort, followed by a more involved analysis of

competitive results, also forms these rankings. The preliminary sort is based on seasonal

rankings and best times. The final ranking is again based on head-to-head competitive

results, with time playing a secondary role, though at times a deciding role. One special

race can at times put a runner over the top, though consistency is a valued asset. I have

devised the Moreland Racing Factor to help in deciding close contests.

Qualifying times are set in each age division for the 10K, and then adjusted for other

distances. I believe in a constant time so that, while a runner may not make the top ten, he

or she may consider himself or herself a ranked runner. My primary concern is that of

believability. There should be few surprises. Competitiveness will always find a few

disputes. Most runners know who they can best and who remains unbeatable. The

rankings should fairly reflect that. If you have comments and questions or would like to

receive a more complete explanation of individual rankings contact me at

[email protected].

The middle column is the points awarded for each race. The right column is for any
