Page 2: 5 Tips to Consider

re you discovering that narrowing

down your list of potential colleges isn’t

quite as simple as you originally thought?

Scholarships, quality of education, teaching

facilities, location and more give you plenty

of things to think about – maybe too many!

To help you decide which schools are

right for you, consider the following criteria

while evaluating colleges and universities,

so you’ll end up with the one that’s the

best fit for you.

a total EXPERIENCEYou’re more than just a scholar, so you want to make sure you have alternatives outside the classroom. When schools have strong and varied athletic programs, extracurricular activities such as campus newspapers, service clubs, concerts, trips and special visiting speakers, it shows they value all you’ll learn.

One major advantage of the University of Central Florida is the wide variety of ways to get involved. You can take part in any of 350 student organizations, fraternities, sororities and ROTC. Plus, there are scores of academic clubs; dozens of religious, music and theater groups; and more than 40 intercollegiate and intramural sports.

a REPUTATION for excellenceFind out how many graduates get the kinds of jobs they want, or are accepted into their target graduate schools, and how soon after graduation this happens. Make sure those who get jobs are really getting good jobs. Another tip: Strong alumni support indicates graduates were pleased with their experiences.

Our graduates go on to attend the most distinguished graduate programs and are accepted into their target graduate schools. UCF has the kind of track record for which you may be looking. Our graduates win national fellowships like the Goldwater, Rhodes, Mellon and Truman and have gained employment with Lockheed Martin, Disney, Northrop Grumman, Microsoft, FedEx, Kraft, Coca-Cola, NASA, the Peace Corps and the U.S. Department of State, to name a few.

a LOCATION that has a lot to offerOftentimes, the location of the college you choose is just as important as the college itself. Therefore, you should consider factors such as convenience, social outlets and internship opportunities when thinking about colleges.

UCF’s location is one of our major advantages. UCF is close to major highways, rail stations and an international airport, so getting here is easy. This level of convenience also makes the area attractive to many top companies (like the ones listed above), which means there are plenty of internship and co-op opportunities available. Last, but certainly not least, our Orlando location puts our students close to a wide variety of social activities – shopping, theme parks, restaurants and outdoor recreation areas are literally minutes from our doorstep!

excellent TEACHING AND FACILITIESLook for schools where the professors have Ph.D.s or the highest degrees in their fields – you won’t learn as much from a graduate student who’s just a few years older than you, although they can be helpful. Other key elements in a great education are class size and the level of technology, as well as the facilities that are available to you as an undergraduate.

At UCF, almost all of our professors have Ph.D.s or the highest degrees in their fields. They truly care about your learning experience, inspiring you to engage in abstract thinking, critical analysis and interdisciplinary study. Our classes tend to have far fewer students than you’d expect at a public university. Our multimedia classrooms and science and hospitality studies labs all boast up-to-the-minute technology, and our residence halls and campus facilities are among the finest in the country.

generous SCHOLARSHIPS and merit-based AWARDSYou’ve worked hard in high school, and you deserve a scholarship package that reflects your achievements. Schools that reward hard work, special talents and leadership care about the financial health of you and your family and don’t want cost to be a barrier to accomplishing your goals.

UCF awards many academic scholarships to talented freshmen – in addition to private scholarships such as National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic – on top of any need-based aid. Our honors students often cite our scholarship packages as proof that they are valued by UCF and as a significant reason why they choose to enroll here.

As you narrow down your own “short list” of schools, we hope these tips are useful to you. And, if what UCF has to offer is intriguing, we hope you’ll consider us. You may find, as many other students across the nation have, that the University of Central Florida is the right school for you!
