Information Age

• Our students are coming of age at a time when we are bombarded with information.

• I must teach these students to read critically, with an analytical approach.

• These reading skills are the beginning of literary analysis, which will be required of them in high school and college.

Independent Reading

• Students must read 25 books during the school year as prescribed by the state standards.

• 1st 9 weeks: 6 books+• 2nd 9 weeks: 6 books+• 3rd 9 weeks: 6 books+• 4th 9 weeks: 5 books+• In class: 2+ novels=

Tests:• Questions stems will

help prepare students for standardized testing.

• Questions will focus on critical thinking skills.

• Tests will typically be open book.

• 40% of total Reading grade.

Homework:• Read for 20 minutes.

Why? To make a habit of reading!

• Comprehension HW will usually be due on Thursday.

Late Work Policy

– Day 1 late= minus 10% off grade (ex. 95%=85%)

– Day 2 late= minus 20% off grade (ex. 95%=75%)

– Day 3 late= minus 30% off grade (ex. 95%=65%)

– More than 3 days late= minus 50% off grade

What do you need to know about the CRCT?

• The CRCT is based on the Common Core Standards, which I have studied and will methodically teach and review.

• Students in 5th grade must pass the Reading and Math sections for promotion.
