    Welcome!

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Dalkeith Singers Christmas Concert to-

night. Cole our musical director has said all there has to be said about the music we

will be performing for you tonight and on behalf of the choir and committee we hope

you have a very enjoyable evening.

A very Happy Christmas and a Good New Year to you all.

    To-nights performance.

Welcome, friends and supporters, to the Dalkeith Singers' Christmas concerts for 2015!

We're thrilled you are able to join us in an evening of music making and fun to celebrate

    the season.

Tonight's programme journeys through the Christmas story by way of a veritable feast

of choral classics, old and new. From the dramatic surges of the Coventry Carol,

through to contemporary choral favourites by John Tavener and Will Todd (with a light

jazzy diversion en route!), the choir will mark the key points in the story of the birth of

Christ: the angel Gabriel's prophecy, the role of the Virgin Mary, the journey of the

Wise Men and the birth in the humble stable. Along the way, we're privileged to be

joined by our special guests, the Newtongrange Junior Silver Brass Band. We're also

privileged to be supported by Peter Relph, composer of O Virgo Virginem, a new work

written especially for the Dalkeith Singers this Christmas.

The choir is honoured to have a chance to perform for you this evening, and also to

raise funds for the charity, Marie Curie, in memory of our dear friend, singer and com-

mittee member in the choir, Esther Brown. The charity's hospice provided tremendous

support and care towards the end of Esther's life; we hope you will consider supporting

    this worthwhile cause this evening.

We hope you enjoy the programme this evening - and I look forward to hearing you

joining us singing in some of the carols along the way!

    4. The First Nowell,

The first Nowell the angel did say

    Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;

In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep,

On a cold winters night that was so deep.

    Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,

Born is the King of Israel.

They lookd up and saw a star

    Shining in the east, beyond them far;

And to the earth it gave great light,

And so it continued both day and night.

    Nowell, Nowell, etc.

And by the light of that same star

    Three Wise Men came from country far;

To seek for a King was their intent,

And to follow the star wherever it went.

    Nowell, Nowell, etc

This star drew nigh to the northwest,

    Over Bethlehem it took its rest;

And there it did both stop and stay,

Right over the place where Jesus lay.

    Nowell, Nowell, etc

Then entered in those Wise Men three,

    Full reverently upon the knee,

And offered there, in His presence,

Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.

    Nowell, Nowell, etc

Then let us all with one accord

    Sing praises to our heavenly Lord;

That hath made Heaven and earth of naught,

And with His blood mankind hath bought.

    Nowell, Nowell, etc

    3. Silent Night

    Silent night, holy night,

all is calm, all is bright

round yon virgin mother and child.

Holy infant, so tender and mild,

    sleep in heavenly peace,

    sleep in heavenly peace.

    Silent night, holy night,

    shepherds quake at the sight;

    glories stream from heaven afar,

    heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!

    Christ the Saviour is born,

    Christ the Saviour is born!

    Silent night, holy night,

Son of God, love's pure light

radiant beams from thy holy face,

with the dawn of redeeming grace,

    Jesus, Lord, at thy birth,

    Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

    Newtongrange Silver Band Youth Initiative.

We warmly welcome as our guest artists tonight the Newtongrange Silver Band Youth

Initiative. There has been a brass band in Newtongrange for over 100 years. To keep

that tradition going the Youth Initiative was formed three years ago. The children in

the band are aged between 9 and 12 and come from Midlothian, Edinburgh and Borders.

Most of the children get lessons at school however there are also some who get les-

sons from the adults who come along to help. The band is trying to encourage children

to play and enjoy musical instruments together and keep the tradition of Newtongrange

Brass Band going! They took part in the ceremony to switch on the Christmas lights in

Newtongrange this year and have been playing in local concerts during the year. Please

give them a very warm welcome - we know you will be thrilled with their performance.

The charity we are supporting at these concerts is ...

    Marie Curie Hospice, Edinburgh

The Marie Curie Hospice, Edinburgh, is situated in

the district of Fairmilehead on the southern edge

of the city of Edinburgh, about 20 minutes drive

from the city centre with splendid views across to

the Pentland hills. Marie Curie took over the build-

ing in 1968 which had been previously run as a

    nursing home.

The purpose of the hospice is to promote and maintain the best quality of life and offer

high quality end of life care, providing specialist holistic palliative care for adults living

with any terminal illness. It offers care and support to patients requiring symptom

control, psychological support, rehabilitation and end of life care. In addition to a team

of highly experienced doctors and nurses, the hospice has specialists in a wide range of

roles including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, bereavement support

and pastoral care. Complementary therapies such as aromatherapy and reflexology are

also offered. The Day Therapy Unit provides a therapeutic environment for assess-

ment, monitoring and control of symptoms, as well as providing peer support, respite

    for carers and rehabilitation.

Our team of clinical nurse specialists provide care to patients, their families and carers

in their homes and at outpatient clinics at the hospice. This care extends to family,

friends and carers during a patients stay and carries on into bereavement.

Please give generously to this hugely worthwhile cause who cared

for our friend Esther so wonderfully.

    2. God Rest You Merry Gentlemen

    God rest you merry, gentlemen,

    Let nothing you dismay,

    For Jesus Christ our Saviour

    Was born on Christmas Day,

To save us all from Satan's power

    When we were gone astray:

O tidings of comfort and joy,

    comfort and joy,

O tidings of comfort and joy.

    From God our heavenly Father

    A blessed angel came,

    And unto certain shepherds

    Brought tidings of the same,

    How that in Bethlehem wa
