5th Grade News Week of February 4, 2019
MATH 5A- This week, there will be a quiz on numerical expressions on Wednesday. Then, the 5th grade will be entering the wonderful world of fractions for quite some time, beginning with fractions with like denominators and improper fractions.
5B- This week we are focusing on ordered pairs. We will work on graphing different shapes this week. No quiz this week.
LANGUAGE ARTS
5A Reading – The students will reread
our anchor story, A Quest for a Tree
Kangaroo, due to having no class last
week! We will work on some
vocabulary activities and
comprehension activities. A
vocabulary/comprehension quiz will
be on Wednesday! Look for the study
guide and please review this before
the quiz! The students will then be
working on a reading comprehension
activity based on the movie, “Hidden
Figures.”
5B Reading -Due to not have class last
week, we are still working on our
story, A Quest for a Tree Kangaroo .
We will have our vocabulary and
comprehension test on Wednesday!
Then for the rest of the week, we will
research and create a PowerPoint
about tree kangaroos.
5English/Writing- The students will
complete their persuasive writings
(which we begin two weeks ago!) by
Tuesday of this week. We will then
focus on the grammar activities
identifying main verbs, helping verbs,
and linking verbs. We will have a
grammar test on Friday!
RELIGION This week we will finish up our Family Life series. We will talk about God’s gift of Love and Community. We will focus on friendship, families, and marriage. Students are taking the ACRE test on Tuesday during the afternoon, it’s a test about their knowledge of religion.
SCIENCE 5th graders learned about
polarity last week and
made models of water
molecules to demonstrate
it. Water has some very
useful properties! This
week, they will be talking
all about the water cycle
and will be composing
water cycle jingles to
learn the steps.
SOCIAL STUDIES Due to not having class very often
last week, we are still learning
about the colonies. This week we
will learn about the Middle
colonies and how people settled
in each colony. We will have a quiz
over the New England and Middle
colonies next week.

6th Grade News Week of February 5, 2018
MATH 6A- There will be a quiz on two-step equations this Thursday. Then, the class will use their understanding of equations to solve perimeter, area, and volume of rectangles and squares using formulas.
6B- We are finishing up coordinate graphing this week, then we are moving on to expressions. We will start with writing them in different forms. No quiz this week.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The 6th graders will finally dive
into the rest of our unit on
Mesopotamia! This week we
will focus on farming,
settlements, and social classes
which evolved during the growth
of civilizations in Mesopotamia.
There will be a quiz over this on
Friday!
LANGUAGE ARTS
6A Reading - The students will be
given the new vocabulary words for
Chapters 7-14. We will have our next
vocabulary/comprehension test on
Friday. The students will continue
reading the novel, Hoot. We will
focus on the different story elements
this week.
6B Reading - We are working on our
novel, Hoot. This week we will focus
on our new vocabulary words,
journaling about each chapter, and
predicting the events of the story. No
quiz this week.
6English/Writing – The 6th graders will
be completing an “Everyday Edit”
where we will find ten grammar errors
in the paragraph. We will be working
on carrying our grammar knowledge
into our writing. This week we will
begin diagramming sentences. By
doing this, it will help the students
create stronger sentences and
paragraphs in their writing.
RELIGION
We will complete our
Benzinger Family Life unit this
week. The students will focus
on how self-respect affects
their choices, understand the
importance of fiscal
responsibility, and recognize
children are a blessing from
God.
SCIENCE The 6th graders learned all
about erosion and
deposition by water last
week. They will have a
quiz this next Tuesday on
important vocabulary and
have a list of words to know
to help with studying in
their vocabulary packets.
