Our Time Here

We bought the property new, and so had an input on what went into it. The houses are very well spaced apart with large gardens in a large plot. We liked the proximity to both Canterbury and Thanet, being equidistant from both. We particularly love the south-facing garden and the views are fabulous, so the fact that English Heritage had purchased and protected the land below was a real bonus. We both love every part of the house, but if we had to pick a favourite, it would be between the kitchen with its double doors or the very large patio that it leads onto. When we moved in, the garden was just a big mud patch, but it is now well-designed and well maintained, having been lovingly tended for almost 20 years. Upstreet itself has an excellent small shop/Post Office and a pub, while the nearest church is in Chislet, which has a very good primary school opposite. The area is well known for excellent schooling, with both private and state schools nearby. There is an abundance of farm shops in the local area and it’s very easy to access the larger shops in Canterbury and Thanet from here, under 10 minutes drive away. We are also well placed for the Eurostar, Channel Tunnel and ferry crossings; as well as the rail services to London and beyond. From Herne Bay you can get the normal train to Victoria or the High Speed to St. Pancras. It’s very convenient if you like or need to travel. It’s a wonderful position to be in, living in the countryside, yet within easy reach of the city and the sea. People think of Upstreet as being the middle of nowhere, but actually it’s the middle of everywhere! We’ll miss the little community we have here with our neighbours, and have many happy memories of our time here with our children, who have since flown the nest. We’ve had 19 very happy years here, but now in retirement, we want to do more travelling and feel that it is the right time for us to move.
