    Technical Report-Myths About S-AxisWorkholding

by KartoApro, CN C Software, nc, Product Manager ,Multiaxis

t was evident at the recent I M T S show in Chicago that5 Axis machining is rapidly becoming the norm insteadof an exception. I felt like a kid in the candy store a s

I walked the show. Most CNC machine tool builders offerseveralmodels of multiaxis machinesa nd th e capabilities ofthese machinesa re truly amazing. They combine seeminglycontradictory traits smooth motion, rigidity, speeda nd preci-sion. There is a machine to suit any budget and if a dedicated5-axis machine is out of one's reach, there a re m any thirdparty single a nd dual rotary devices available enabling yo uto instantlv turn your 3-axis machine into a 4 o r 5-axis one.W h a tY ou N e e d o Know

Driving these multiaxis machines is a constant chal-lenge, requiring close working relations between machinetool builders and CadlCam software developers. Multiaxistoolpath gene ration is al l about control. You must controlthree major things: T h e C u t Pattem, T he Tool Axis direc-tion as you a re following the cut pattem a nd th e Tool T ipCompensat ionduring 5-axis motions. M y job a s a Multiaxis

product m anager is to design a powerful, ye t easy to use'user interface that gives these controls to the C N C program-mer . Mastercam does have all these controls organized n alogical, easy to follow worldow, but what really separatesit from the pack is a full machine shop on th e premises. tis one thing to create flawless toolpaths in a sterile, virtualworld a nd quite another o design and e xecute he m from th ee nd userspoint of view.Avoid costly one time sefups

The end user knows that 5-axis machining is not onlyabout those three controls mentioned above. Those will a l-low yo u to cut the part, but one of th e main preoccupationsin 5-axis machining is to avoid collisions with fixtures a ndmachine components while cutting th e part. Work holdingis a very important, often ignored aspectof 5-axis machin-ing. The m achines' rotary control point must be accuratelyalignedwith the C am systems'coordinate system. The work-piece should be located in the machines'optimum work e n-r .elope.The work holding fixture should be accessible, igid
