Peter O’Neill Deputy Principal

Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, writer and peace activist, who died this year, wrote these words:

“We tell … stories because perhaps we know that not to listen, not to want to know, would lead … to indifference, and indifference is never an answer. Whoever hates, hates everybody. Whoever kills, kills more than his victims.” (Elie Wiesel, 1928-2016)

Sometimes I feel in danger of becoming desensitized to the world’s pain. Every day, the casualty list mounts higher. Nine people in this city, eighty in another – we have come to expect these morning tidings of dread. Sometimes I feel myself pushed to the point of ‘not wanting to know’ anymore, as Wiesel warned, because it is too much to bear.

3 Newsletter 12, Week 3, Term 3 5 August 2016

It is then that I need to heed Wiesel’s advice, to ‘tell’ the story. As we remember, and tell stories, we are reminded what it feels like to be human. Even more crucially, stories remind us what it feels like to be ‘another’ human being – they lead us to empathy.

Last year I visited the remains of the Buchenwald concentration camp in the former East Germany. The story told there was inconceivably horrific but it needed to be told so that the ‘killers’ might not have the last word: that they might not murder their victims’ stories.

Let us pray that we will find the courage to keep telling stories of hope and love in these challenging times:

God, make us story-tellers and memory bearers. Where there is evil, let us speak out. Where there is pain, let us heal. Where there is indifference, give us strength to care. Where we are divided, draw us together. Wherever we are, whoever we are, let us love. Amen.

Year 8 and Year 10 Subject Information Evenings, Year 12 Trial HSC Exams, Year 11 Exams & AAS Testing

Year 10 students: beginning the journey to Year 11: It was wonderful to see so many parents and students at the Year 11 2017 Subject Information Evening last week. The Year 10 students are certainly actively engaged by the subjects on offer; this is an exciting time for them as they make their way towards shaping the pattern of study that will characterise their last few years at school.

Parents of Year 8 Students: Year 8 students have the opportunity to have their questions about Year 9 subject choices answered at the Year 9 2017 Subject Information Evening from 7pm Tuesday 9 August in the Senior School Building. The students have enjoyed experiences across many different subjects over the last two years and this is their first opportunity to pursue their interests in the choice of elective subjects. Parents are most cordially invited to attend the evening with their son or daughter and talk to teachers who will be keen to provide information about their specialist subjects.

Year 12 Trial HSC Exams: The focus of our Year 12 students is firmly on the Trial Examination which commences Monday 8 August and concludes Wednesday 17 August. For all students, these exams figure as significant assessment items that will assist in determining the assessment component of their final HSC mark. The students are busy honing their study schedule in order to maximise their results in this important set of exams. The Trial Examination timetable has been distributed to students and is also available on the College website.

Students undertaking Visual Art, Design and Technology, Music and Drama are particularly busy as they work toward the submission of their major works and process diaries. Students should be maintaining a ready dialogue with their teachers in order to ensure that their major works are progressing steadily toward completion and that they are in compliance with all project specifications.

Performance examination dates have been released for Drama and we wish our Year 12 Drama students all the best as they prepare for their performance exam on 31 August.

Year 11 students: End of Preliminary Course Examinations: Students in Year 11 are preparing for the very important end of course exams in their Preliminary HSC Course. These exams take place across Week 7 and begin on Monday 29 August. The students are approaching their assessments and exams with seriousness and have been plaguing their teachers for advice and feedback; this is advice that their teachers are very happy to impart! Many students are producing well-structured and carefully researched summary material to assist them in their endeavours, and others are submitting draft material to their teachers for comment. We wish them very well in their study and look forward to seeing the fruits of their labours as they tackle this important set of challenges.

AAS Testing: On 19 September, Year 4 students will undertake diagnostic testing that targets skills of reading, writing, general and non-verbal reasoning, spelling and Mathematics. This will assist us to track the development of these students as they progress through the College.

Whilst our original plans included Year 6 and Year 8 in this testing regime, we have decided to focus only on Year 4 this year. This will allow us to properly embed the testing regime into our current practices.

Parents of Year 10 students are able to access the AAS reports for their daughters or sons by contacting me at the College.

“Learning is experience, everything else is just information”

Albert Einstein was not only a great thinker in Science but he also recognised, via his own frailties as a student, that learning is something that we take part in rather than observe. All people will learn differently at different times in their lives. As we work with students as they learn to read, write, become numerate and think about the world it is important to recognise that their experience of the learning, their active involvement in the learning, is the most important thing to foster.

Nutrition: Healthy eating at school. A healthy routine with eating is important to all as it enables students to maintain the high energy levels needed for learning. Attached to this newsletter is a statement regarding healthy eating. Only last week (Tuesday 26 July) ‘Catalyst’ pointed out the importance of eating healthy food, not only to ward off illness, but to enable deeper understanding and learning.

Public Speaking Finals: Samuele Vaccaro (4MC) is to be congratulated on an excellent speech at the final of the Lions Club Public Speaking last Monday. He achieved first place and will move on to the next round in the Regional Final. Tyra Murray (4MC) placed second in the same division. Christina Halford (6MR) was placed second in the Year 5/6 competition. All other students spoke with great aplomb and the outcome was extremely close with only a few points separating the field. Ariel Halford (5JH) and Hamish Darmody (5JH) represented the College and their speeches were quite outstanding.

Creative Pursuits: The program for Term 3 has started this week with another wide variety of opportunities for students. Gardening, Art Appreciation, Recycled Art, Animation, Jewellery Making, Strategy Games, Ten Pin Bowling, Rugby and Football have been offered for this term.

Sewing: The after school sewing skills groups have been a great success. If you are interested in enrolling your child please contact Amandah at [email protected] to organise the process.

Parent Helpers: Thank you to parents who sent an e-mail. I will organise a time to run through this as soon as possible.

Junior Production: The Junior Production involves a wide range of students. This is a wonderful way to learn about Drama and the important place this art form has in our society. The Production “The Lion King” has involved many students and some very dedicated staff, and tickets are selling fast.

Parent/Teacher Interviews Week 7: The staff are looking forward to this important level of communication. This is the formal round of interviews and the focus in the time available is the academic and social requirements of each student.

Book Week Parade Week 6: This week is used to draw attention to the importance of good literature in our lives. On the Friday morning (26 August) we encourage all students to dress as their favourite character from a book they have read and be prepared to discuss the book and the character.

Healthy Lunches School is a time when children start to make independent choices about their lifestyles. School aged children learn quickly and are influenced by friends and popular trends. This is an important time to talk about and encourage healthy food habits. Involving children in planning and preparing their own lunchboxes gives them the opportunity to learn about healthy eating, and also gives them a chance to make autonomous decisions about what they will be eating during the day.

Page 7: 5 August 2016 - Amazon S3...2 Newsletter 12 , Week 3, Term 3 5 August 2016 Parent/Teacher Interviews • Junior School, both Albury and Wodonga interviews will be conducted on

Involve your children in healthy choices Some tips to help get your kids involved include:

• Talk to your children about what they would like to have in their lunchbox. Discuss healthier food and drink choices and decide what will be in the lunchbox together.

• Write a shopping list together. Take your children shopping with you and let them choose foods and drinks from the shopping list.

• Encourage your children help prepare their lunchboxes. Older children may be able to prepare most of their lunch themselves, and younger children can help with making sandwiches or cutting up soft fruit. It is a good idea to prepare lunchboxes the evening before to allow children to participate.

What to put in school lunches Try planning a healthy lunch box to start the school year. Talk to your children and discuss what they would be happy to have included. The six key parts to a healthy lunchbox include:

• fresh fruit • fresh crunchy vegetables • milk, yoghurt or cheese (you can use reduced-fat options for children over the age

of two years). For children who cannot tolerate milk products, offer appropriate alternatives like calcium fortified soy or rice drink or soy yoghurt

• a meat or meat alternative food like some lean meat (e.g. chicken strips) or a hard-boiled egg.

• a grain or cereal food like bread, a roll, flat bread, fruit bread or crackers (wholegrain or wholemeal choices are best

• tap water.

The Importance of Handwriting in Schools, Part 2 You may recall in the previous newsletter, I discussed the importance of handwriting. Since then further questions and comments have been made to me. To follow-up, I made contact with Rebecca Spokes (O.T.), and found her opinion on the topic of great interest. Rebecca Spokes is the Director and Principal Occupational Therapist for Mobile Kids O.T. As a qualified and practising Occupational Therapist, included is what she had to say about the value of handwriting. Rebecca writes:

There is another aspect to writing that is very important. That is, the actual kinaesthetic motion (motor action) of handwriting adds an extra level of memory building in the brain. Research has shown that the actual task of handwriting helps to develop basic literacy skills, such as letter recognition because the child is not only seeing but “feeling” the letter form. This helps to consolidate the letter shape and when added with the letter sound, helps to build the memory for reading.

In later years, the act of handwriting also supports memory recall of information. Studies with university students have revealed that those students who handwrote their notes had a better understanding and were able to recall information at assessment when compared to peers who typed. It is believed that even though the students who had typed their notes produced more detail, it was more a transcript of what was being taught rather than individualised notes. Whereas, students who hand wrote their notes selected key phrases and words that helped them to recall the information. It is believed that students who hand write notes are listening more intently to the content of and attempting to make connections and understand what is being taught. Students who are typing are transcribing the content rather than trying for understand.

To me this is very important as schools move to digital based systems. There needs to be an adjustment for both teaching staff and students on how best to learn in the digital world.

From my perspective, as Head of Campus, parents can rest assured the students at our school will continue to be taught and will be expected to produce handwritten work. Equally, it goes without saying that the use of word processing is an important part of the students’ learning.

Wodonga Campus Narrative/Poem Writing Competition

The SRC has launched a Narrative/Poem Writing competition. The competition will be part of National Book Week. This year’s theme is ‘Australia: Story Country’. Students can use this theme, or a theme of their choice, as a stimulus to write a narrative or poem. Entries close on Thursday 18 August.

There will be three sections to the competitions: Section One – Years Prep & 1 Section Two – Years 2 & 3 Section Three – Years 4-6

Students will be given a small amount of time at school to complete their narratives or poem, and the rest will be assigned as homework. Requirements:

The top three entries from each class will be decided by their classroom teacher and will then move on to the next round which will be against the other winners from within their section. Winners will be decided by the section teachers and Mr O’Loan, and be announced at the Book Week Parade on Friday 26 August. The winners from each section of the competition will have their narrative/poem displayed in the Campus Hall for the remainder of the year and will also receive a $10 book voucher for the purchase of a Scholastic Book.

Ski Trip

A very large group will take part in this year’s Wodonga Campus Ski Trip to Falls Creek on 12 August. We are delighted to have ninety-five people, on the bus and travelling independently, and thanks to everyone for their support. Anyone who is on the list to go, but has yet to pay for the trip, please do so without delay.

Parents need to make their own arrangements about hiring ski gear, but students’ clothing will be sent home with them the previous night. They are encouraged to wear their ski

Please ensure everyone is well rugged up, has their lunch (unless they are participating in the Junior Ski Workshop which includes lunch) and snacks, and a change of clothes for the trip home. The bus is expected to be back at Baranduda Campus by 5.30pm, and parents will be notified if there is any change to this timing.

Year 7 Step Up Day This will take place on Thursday 25 August. All current Year 6 students going into Year 7 at Trinity’s Albury Campus in 2017 are required to attend. They are to be at the Albury Campus by 8.45am. If parents could take them, that would be very much appreciated, but there will be some space on the Trinity bus leaving Baranduda at 8.15am. Anyone who is wanting to travel across on the Trinity bus should let the office know. Nut & Raw Egg Aware College Environment

Can I take this opportunity to remind parents, and particularly our new parents, that our College is a ‘Nut and Raw Egg Aware’ School. We have a number of students who suffer from anaphylaxis, particularly to nuts and raw eggs. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that occurs rapidly and causes a life-threatening response if not treated immediately. We ask parents to be very conscious when packing students’ lunch boxes, and to avoid all nuts and nut products and raw egg. Your vigilance will help us in our duty of care to all children, to give them a safe and secure learning environment.

BISSA Athletics The torrential rain and bleak conditions, which left students’ noses running faster than any of them could hope to run, did not dampen the team’s spirit or camaraderie which typified their continual efforts throughout the day. Students’ well-being was at the forefront of our concerns. The depleted team competed admirably, achieving a well-respected fourth overall and third in the average aggregate.

Legacy Public Speaking Competition On Thursday, 28 April, Pearl McMillan and Ryan Wandel (both in Year 8) attended the Legacy Public Speaking Competition. Both students are commended for selecting contemporary issues which expressed a real concern for the world in which they live. Pearl spoke about the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation, whilst Ryan spoke about the growing dangers surrounding the depletion of global water supplies. Both Ryan and Pearl delivered their speeches with clarity and received positive feedback from both the adjudicator and their competitors. Of particular note was their efforts to adhere to time requirements in their impromptu speeches; by no means an easy feat. At the conclusion of the competition, Pearl was judged to have won the competition and will now be representing both the College and the region at the state semi-finals on Friday, 9 September at the NSW Parliament House. Senior School Representative Netball Last Thursday, three Senior School netball teams were chosen to represent the College against the best netball teams from rival schools. The day commenced with the sun shining and the Open Girls winning their first three games convincingly. A thrilling semi-final against Scots followed and a close three goal win meant they would face Xavier in the grand final. The Junior Year 7/8 team showcased their skills against Scots in their semi-final match, where they came out on top after facing the weather and a very tall goal-shooter. This result meant that they too were up against Xavier in the grand final match. The Year 9/10 team was strong and versatile, and made up of enthusiastic Year 9 girls. For their first game, they took to the court against Murray High and enjoyed a win. The next match was against their biggest rivals, Xavier High School. It was a fast and competitive 14 minutes with the girls trying to keep the scores level but unfortunately were defeated. Scots overpowered them in their third game, making the final two games critical for a spot in the semi-finals. Corowa High took to the court very determined, however, we withstood the challenge, as we did in our last match against Albury High. Unfortunately, we were one spot off the finals

but overall it was a rewarding and enjoyable day! Everyone performed exceptionally well considering the competition was for players in Year 9 and 10!

The wet weather cleared and the grand finals were played in great spirit. The Open team went down in a nail biting game losing to the well trained Xavier girls by four and the Juniors were confronted with an experienced team of girls, also losing their grand final. All in all, the tournament proved to be a positive experience for the Trinity netball teams, compared to results in the past. A massive thanks goes to the umpires for giving their time and to all the teachers involved in the preparation for this tournament. After these three teams have the chance to train together, future results are looking positive, especially before their battle against schools in the Netball Victoria Schools Challenge in Wangaratta, later this month. Victorian Secondary Schools Squash Championships On Thursday 28 July, Kyle Magee, Tom Freire and Mitch Nero, Trinity’s Senior School squash team competed in the Victorian Secondary Schools Squash Championships, held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. After the three-hour drive and a walk around the Crown Casino finding Kyle’s dream car the night before, the reigning champs were ready to defend their title, albeit against Year 12 students. Trinity began with a comfortable win over Gladstone Park Secondary College, followed by a more challenging win over Templestowe College (2) and McKinnon Secondary College. The boys tried to salvage something from these relatively easy pool matches to prepare for tougher opposition in the final.

Templestowe College (1) provided a talented team with three State Under 19 players. Trinity fought hard and put in a respectable performance, but were outmatched and eventually lost. Both Mitch and Kyle tested their opponents and Tom lost by a golden point. Thank you to Mr Dicketts for organising travel and accommodation and providing coaching tips along the way. Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) - Access With the upcoming Junior School Production and Trinity College Art Show the regular MPH training schedule will be interrupted. On the following dates, students and College teams will not have access to the MPH. Tuesday, 9 and Wednesday, 10 August – Lunch time Friday, 12 to Friday, 19 August (inclusively) Tuesday, 6 September (9am) to Monday, 12 September (lunchtime) Around the Grounds Congratulations to Jarrod Langshaw who was part of the Bronco’s team that won the 2016 Under 18 Basketball Championships in Wodonga. Jarrod’s team went undefeated all season only to win the semi-final by one point in the last 1.6 seconds. We are in need of volunteers for the event to fill a number of positions.

The Junior School Singing Group (Thurgoona campus) came second in the Combined Primary Section K-6 in the Albury/Wodonga Eisteddfod on Wednesday 27 July. Students sang two pieces, the first being "Make a Difference" and the second piece being "Gecko". Everyone sang beautifully and really enjoyed performing on the large stage.

Thank you to all the parents who came to watch on the day and to Megan Salan who was a wonderful assistant.

In September, Year 9 student, Jake McGrath and others from Albury, will be travelling to Thailand for two weeks to volunteer in three orphanages as part of the Mercy International Program.

At the three orphanages jobs that will be undertaken will range from child care to practical work such as building maintenance, equipment repairs, cleaning and gardening.

The orphanage at Khon Kaen have requested shoes for teenagers to be taken over. If you have any second hand teenage shoes that you would like to donate please place them in the box which is located at the office. Shoes should be wearable, clean and tied together. Runners would be ideal.

Thanking you in anticipation of your donation.

What better way to spend a perfect Spring morning than a spot of tennis, punctuated by a companionable morning tea?

Do you want to shrug off the sluggishness of Winter? Are you keen for a get together with good company, superb morning tea and social tennis? Or, do you want to test your competitive edge on the tennis court?

The Spring tennis gala days are fast approaching for students in Years 7 to 11 and will take place later this term.

Watch this space!

Please see Miss Armstrong for notes, details, questions, recipes . . .

In Term 3 students in Years K-2 will not be able to place Canteen lunch orders on Fridays. This is due to the very large numbers of Junior students ordering on Fridays. Please order for your K-2 child on any other day of the week! Sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thank you to volunteers Mandy Clarke and Jana Kondacs. Thank you also to Jake Bradford. Jake is a Trinity graduate (2010) who has a brother and sister in the school. He is now a Policeman locally, and we are very grateful he drops in now and then to volunteer!
