Welcome to the 2nd edion of Fourth Quarter. Also welcome to our

brand new looking Ozsports website. The team at Ozsports HQ has

been a buzz with the team spread across Adelaides premier beach at

Glenelg and Chrises Beach and the Swimming and Aquac Leisure

Centre in Marion. Covering Rescue 2012 Life Saving World Champion-ships .

It has been a blast seeing some of Australias and the Worlds best

life savers in acon across 21 disciplines on the beach and in the

pool. The acon does not stop there late November we head to Lock-

leys and Holdfast Lawn Bowling Clubs for the Bowls World Champi-

onships that hit Adelaide from November 24thDecember 9th.

Ozsports will have all the acon here on the website and on Ozsports

TV and Ozsports FM.

Ozsports has sealed a deal with VOXSPORTS to supply footage from

sports events. VOXSPORTS is a media outlet from Singapore produc-

ing highlight packages of sporng events. So keep an eye out for the

Ozsports camera crews roaming the sports elds of Adelaide.

The Ozsports team will be working over the summer bringing you all

the latest sports news, results and interviews straight to your com-

puter.

Howzat the most- ancipated drama of the year, HOWZAT KERRY PACKERS WAR is how legendary media mogul Kerry

Packer, played by Lachy Hulme fought war by secretly signing up 50 of the worlds

greatest players from across the world of cricket to form a breakaway compeon.

Packer took on the Australian Cricket Establishment and MCCC in a war over TV

rights and turned the cricket world upside down by creang World Series Cricket.

It was John Cornell (Abe Forsythe), beer known as Paul Hogans sidekick Strop,

who brought the idea of reinvenng cricket broadcasts to Packer. The media mag-

nate jumped at the idea but it set him on a collision course with crickeng boards

in Australia and the UK.

It started on a breezy aernoon in 1977. In an Australian suburban living room.

John Stroop Cornell is watching replays from the Ashes Series with his clients

comedian Paul Hogan and Australian test legend Dennis Lillee. In the course of

casual conversaon, Lillee lets slip that he and the rest of the test side is making as

much money from cricket as the guy pushing the sight screen. John Cornell cant

believe his ears. What are they doing? he says in uer frustraon They got this

great game in their hands, and these world champions. And theyve got NO idea

what theyve got! They should be selling stars like you. Lillee sips his can of beer,

stares straight ahead at the screen, and resignedly deepens tell me about it.

But the conversaon sets alight an idea in Cornells head: as self-promoted, self-produced cricket show case held outside

the games exisng structure. But how to make it work? We need someone with deep pockets.and big balls, he says.

Along came Media Barron Kerry Packer head of Channel 9 Flushed with cash, Packer signed the best of the best, taking

advantage of household names who were deemed to be underpaid: Dennis Lillee, Ian Chappell, Greg Chappell, Je Thom-

son, Rod Marsh, David Hookes as well as Tony Greig and broadcaster Richie Benaud. Shut out by the crickeng fraternity,

he secured VFL park in suburban Melbourne and set his sights on night games.

Packer knew the players, who had been underpaid for years, were on the verge of rebellion against the cricket powers.

His rebel games clashed head-on with the ocials test matches, and the war was on. Polishing an idea by John Cornell

(Abe Forsythe), Packer fought a bier two-year legacy of pride, in the tradional nature of the poorly paid game.

The result changed the game of cricket forever. Howzat also stars Damon Gameau as Greg Chappell, Brendan Cowell as

Rodney Marsh, Clayton Watson as Ian Chappell, Mathew Le Nevez as Dennis Lillee, Richard Davies as David Hookes and

Alex England as Tony Greig.

ECKSTEINS FOURTH WORLD TITLE AS NORTHCLIFFE CLAIMS POINTSCORETROPHY

Northclies Shannon Eckstein has produced one of the nest moments of his Stella career to win a fourth World Oceanman

Title at Rescue 2012 on the nal day of Rescue 2012 in Adelaide today to emulate the great Trevor Hendy.

Hendy is regarded as the greatest of Australias surf lifesaving Ironmen, having won four Oceanman (the Internaonal Life Sav-

ing Federaons version of Ironman) world tles and ve Australian Ironman championships.

Eckstein, 29, has now won four Worlds and four Australian Championships and will chase a h to equal Hendy again at the

2013 Aussies at North Kirra next April, before seng his sights on the Coolangaa Gold the race either he or Hendy has won.

He added tle number four in ne style to his previous wins in Italy in 2004, Germany in 2010 and Egypt in 2012 and is now

well on the way to challenging Hendy as Australias greatest.

The inspiraonal Northclie captain also spearheaded his team to the coveted World Championship pointscore with the Aus-

tralian champion club overcoming a massive 400 point decit to beat Italian club Rane Rosse Aqvasport, who dominated the

Pool Rescue secon earlier in the week.

But today was Eckstein and Northclies day and the maroon and white caps, minus swimmers Miranda Bell and New Zealand

Olympian Andrew McMillan (both out injured) were front and centre in most major events.

In the end it was Northclie who carried o the Kevin Weldon Trophy on 775pts from Rane Rosse Aqvasport (ITA) 682 andDLRG Halle-Saalekreis (GER) 526, while Sydney Branch clubWanda 802 were comfortable winners in the Youth pointscore over

fellow NSW club Terrigal 582 with Northclie (304) third.

I grew up idolising Trevor and watching him on television and I have always held him in high esteem, said Eckstein, who was

quick to hold up the four ngers as he crossed the line.

To win a fourth world tle has been a goal of mine and 10 years in the making. I have worked hard for this and will now set

myself for this years Kelloggs Nutri-Grain Series, then the Australian Championships and the Coolangaa Gold.

They only have the world tles every two years so you have to wait two years to get it back (o me).

Even Eckstein admied the condions, including long wades across the sandbanks, the choppy surf and chilly 20knot winds,

presenIt was tough going out there, I knew what I had to do and picked my moment on the board and worked the runners on

the way back to get the most out of the board before going as hard as I could on the swim, said Eckstein.

I wasnt going to let up unl I crossed the line.

Eckstein trailed Mooloolabas Kendrick Louis aer the opening ski leg in the choppy, wind-swept Chrises Beach condions,

but paddled into the lead around the board buoys and was never headed.

He then produced a swim leg Ky Hurst would be proud o, to push as hard as he could in the most dominant performance of a

World Championship fortnight.

Todays Ironwoman went to Coolangaa Gold champion, North Burleighs Brodie Moir from Maroubras emerging star Tara

Coleman, with the fast nishing Coolangaa Gold and Australian champion Courtney Hancock, nursing a twisted ankle, taking

third.

Moir beat a red-hot eld that included fellow Coolangaa Gold and Australian Ironwoman champion Courtney Hancock, Na-

onal Teams Ironwoman champion Kristyl Smith; her fellow Northclie Ironwomen Bonnie Hancock and Harriet Brown as

well as Manlys Under 19 Australian champion Devon Halligan, team mate Candice Falzon and Mooloolabas Allira Richardson.

Moir admied she couldnt believe she had won the world crown.

I have looked up to all these girls for so long and to add the world championship to the Coolangaa Gold in one month is

amazing beyond my wildest dreams, said Moir.

They have all pushed me to be as good as I can be and today I just had to make the most of the condions, especially with

the long runs in and out of the water.

I made sure I capitalised on my lead aer the ski and I knew if I led o the board I could hopefully hang on in the swim and I

did. I guess the world tle will look prey good on the resume.

In one of the most excing nishes of the day, it was Poole who hung on to give Mooloolaba a last gasp victory over North-

clie and Bronte in the Oceanman Relay (one swimmer, one ski paddler, one board paddler, one runner) while Manly (Naomi

Flood, Devon Halligan, Candice Falzon and Mieke Kassulke won the Oceanwoman Relay from Northclie and Mount Maun-

ganui.

In a major taccal ploy, Mooloolaba coach Michael King decided to use Poole as the nal runner.

Under the ILS rules the nal member can tag in the water and the champion Ironman swam to within ve metres of the nal

turning buoy and tagged swimmer Kendrick Louis.

Northclies swimmer, surf race champion Dev Lahey then tagged his nal runner, Kiwi Kevin Morrison, who took o aer

Poole, pushing him right to the line.

It was a sneaky tacc and it paid o, said jelly-legged Poole aer his ding-dong bale.

With both Kendrick and I coming o the Ironman and being red we decided it was probably best to share the swimming

dues half and half and it paid o.

Meanwhile in the nal events of the day Newports beach star Jake Lynch and Kurrawa queen Melissa Howard both claimed

beach doubles adding the ags to their sprint tles.

Lynch, whos father and coach Marn won the Masters beach ags, added to his beach sprint win (dead heat with Jordan

Caldow) for a rare world championship double while the eight-

The 2012 World Championships were held in Adelaide, South Aus-

tralia, from November 24th to the 9th of December 2012. With

teams from across the world converging on two of Adelaides

beauful greens, Lockleys and Holdfast Bay clubs co-hosng 2

weeks of what was erce and hot compeon.

Australia launched its campaign at the biennial 27-naon World

Championships warfare with a star-studded cast of bale-

hardened gladiators and a mix of youthful assassins . The Aus-

sie team aeconately dubbed The Jackaroos the squad

entered the compeon in the prime posion to mount a

successful campaign. The Jackaroos came in the 2012 World

Championships the defending champions aer they pillaged

the silverware from New Zealand soil four years ago.

With the Mens number two being from the host naon Leif Shelby

made an impressive start to his campaign in Adelaide. Shelby

had reinforced his spot on top of the consecuve wins ladder,

with his clinical victory against Commonwealth Games gold

medallist Paul Foster, from Scotland, in the second rubber all

that separates the two of them aer the

rst two days of compeon.

At the end of each days play parcipants

would move in from the greens to the

club talk over the days compeon. Ca-

maraderie of the competors coming

together with other teams from other

countries and sharing a drink it was like a

miniature United Naons.

The Aussies having whitewashed all eight

encounters on the opening day of com-

peon including six victories against pre-tournament fa-

vourites Scotland and our cross Tasman neighbours New

Zealand, the host naon was well placed to connue its

barnstorming at the Lockleys and Holdfast Bay , but had its

colour lowered early by old-

enemy England.

JACKAROOS TOP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Jackaroos have topped the tables at the World Championships

Australia has claimed the overall winners' trophies on the nal day

of the World Championships aer clinching its fourth and

h gold medals in electrifying circumstances.

World number four Karen Murphy claimed the sport's most

coveted prize aer prevailing in the blue-ribbon women's

singles nal this aernoon, and in the process assured the host

naon retained the revered Taylor Trophy, awarded to the

overall women's winner of the 27-naon event, ahead of New

Zealand and Scotland.

It was a herculean eort by the Jackaroos vice-captain, who

was pied against pre-tournament favourite and defending

tleholder Val Smith, from New Zealand, in the gold-medal11

Australia's Leif Selby also picked up the corresponding medal this evening in the men's event, with the world number two edging past Canada's Australian-

based Ryan Bester by a slender 2 shot margin, 21-19.

The pair couldn't be split aer qualifying rounds, with both undefeated from 11 rubbers and even on shots for and against in opposite sides of the draw, and

it proved to be a tanic tussle in the nal decider.

For Selby, who went on an 18 month sabbacal aer the Delhi Commonwealth Games, the elusive World Championships medal sat as the only notable omis-

sion from his mantelpiece.

Again, only a solitary Australian has completed the feat in the men's singles, aer naonal coach Steve Glasson OAM took the honours at Scotland in 2004.

The result also earned the conngent the Leonard Trophy, for overall men's winner, on the back of a gold medals in the men's singles fours, and silver to the

pairs and triples.

The Jackaroos complete the event with ve gold and two silver medals from eight disciplines and will now commence its preparaons for the 2014 Glasgow

Commonwealth Games.

World gold for Peackock, Burne and Archer

Scotlands bowlers have won a third gold medal at the World Championships in Adelaide, as BBC UK reports.

David Peacock, Darren Burne and Greame Archer triumphed in the

mens triples with a 13-12 win over Australia.

On the penulmate day of the compeon, the result puts them second

overall in the medals table with three gold and three bronze.

The victory also means it is Peacocks third successive triples world tle.

It s always been my ambion to win a world tle, said Archer.

To come to here, play against Australia and win is prey special.

In the mens triple nal Peacock, Burne and Archer beat an Australian trio of Wayne Ruediger, Bre Wilkie and Mark Casey.

Despite Australia only scoring on ve of the een ends, the result sll came down to the wire, with the Scosh team winning by the narrowest of margins.

Archer smashed the jack into the ditch on the nal end and Casey's nal bullet ended millimetres short.

Cancer Council SA Chief Executive Professor Brenda Wilson says Ride for a Reason is a wonderfulcommunity event.

Prof Wilson says shell be riding for members of her own family her father died from Hodgkins Lym-phoma a number of years ago and her step-father died from bowel cancer earlier this year. She also

has a number of women friends who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Personally Ill be riding for these people in my life and Id encourage others who have been touched bycancer through family and friends to do the same, Prof Wilson says.

At the Cancer Council we did some simple number crunching around next years Tour and the sad re-ality is that while were out riding some 2700 mums, dads, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, mates andsadly kids across Australia will be diagnosed with cancer.

All funds raised from the ride will support Cancer Council SAs Beat Cancer Project which has one vi-sion to bring us closer than ever to a future without cancer.

Ride for a Reason is also great for camaraderie and fitness while you ride for someone you love whohas either died from cancer or been diagnosed with cancer. All-round it is a fabulous event.

Prof Wilson is currently training for the BUPA Challenge Tour to Ride for a Reason.

I had a great ride up Norton Summit at 5.50am one day last week and all of a sudden Patrick Jonkerwas riding next to me, she says.

So I increased my pace significantly to keep up with him. It was a bit of a thrill to ride with him as a pa-tron of the ride and such a prestigious rider.

SA Healths Chief Project Ocer for Physical Acvity, Dr Narelle Berry said the dedicated digital radio staon will run unl 3

regular part of their rounes.

Walking for 30 minutes most days, whether its in one sustained block or in several shorter walks throughout the day, is one

of the best things you can do for your overall wellbeing, Dr Berry said.

Strong Sky Pro Cycling Team out to

impress

Rising cycling star Edvald Boasson Hagen will kick o his 2013

season at the Santos Tour Down Under alongside a strong

conngent of Sky Pro Cycling riders.

The Norwegian 25-year-old is set to impress over a challeng-

ing race route and will be joined by a strong team including

Bernhard Eisel and Ben Swi.

Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur expects

Boasson Hagen will be keen to test his legs in the Peoples

Choice Classic in Adelaide on January 20.

Theres always plenty of excitement when cyclists take to

the track for the rst me in this 51-kilometre closed circuit

race, Mr Turtur said.

Boasson Hagen nished second to Andr Greipel in this

years Down Under Classic and Im sure it will again be a close

bale to the nish line.

The 2012 season delivered Boasson Hagen a series of hard-

fought victories. He nished rst in the road race at Norways

Naonal Championships and won the Glava Tour of Norway.

He also claimed stage wins at the Volta ao Algarva, Tirreno-

Adriaco and Critrium du Dauphin.

Along with these victories, Boasson Hagen was second in the

UCI Road World Championship road race, third overall in the

Tour of Beijing and seventh overall in the Santos Tour Down

Under, where he took out the Jayco Sprint Jersey, Mr Turtur

said.

He is certainly a rider to watch and we look forward to wel-

coming the enre Sky Pro Cycling team back to South Austral-

Ricky Ponngs remarkable internaonal career drew to a

close at the

end of the 3rd test against South Africa in Perth. With the

Australian saying he had

cherished every moment.

Current Aussie Captain fought back tears as he led the trib-

utes to Ricky Ponng aer his predecessor as Australia cap-

tain an-

nounced his rerement. Ponng ended a celebrated 17-year

internaonal career following this weeks Test series decider

against South Africa in Perth.

The prolic right-hander, less than a month shy of his 38th

birthday, admied his me was up following a barren return

of just 20 runs in the opening two Tests of the series.

Ponngs decision had set an emoonal stage for the last test

at the WACA Ground where Ponng had started 17 years

earlier.

"I didn't have a feeling it was coming," said Clarke.

"Ricky spoke to me aer [the second Test against South Afri-

ca in] Adelaide and obviously made his decision over the last

few days.

"The boys are obviously hurng right now. He's been an

amazing player for a long me."

Asked how it might aect the team ahead of the Perth Test,

Clarke added: "It will only give us more inspiraon."

Ponng will join level with Steve Waugh's Australian record

of 168 Test caps in Perth before stepping out of the game

with more than 27,000 internaonal runs.

The Tasmanian's list of records runs deep - he is the second-

leading Test runscorer, has captained a record 48 wins in thelongest version while he won two World Cups without losing

a game as skipper.

It was no surprise then that the plaudits quickly owed for

one of the most ercely compeve and successful players of

his generaon.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith, who will aempt to

crash Ponng's farewell party, revealed his respect for his

long-me rival.

"Inially it was a bit of a shock...I've played a lot againstRicky and he's the most compeve man I've ever played

against," he said.

"I think the way he played

the game, the intensity

with which he played the game, is a credit to him. He's al-ways represented Australia with a lot of dignity and a lot of

skill"

Former England captain Michael Atherton believes Ponng's

contribuon should not be measured in numbers alone.

"He's right up there (with the best ever) - averaging more

than 50, the second-most Test runs and more than 40 hun-

dreds.

"But I don't think of him so much in a stascal way. He was

just a great competor for Australia.

"His game's never been just about an accumulaon of stas-

cs. His prime movaon has always been to help Australia

win Test matches.

"He's an ultra-compeve, hard-nosed competor on the

eld but a nice man o it ... a peerless competor."

Players from around the world quickly took to Twier to

communicate their respect for Ponng, including former

team-mates such as legendary bowlers Shane Warne and

Glenn McGrath.

Warne wrote: "Congrats to Ricky Ponng on an amazing ca-

reer, well done Punter...Enjoy your last match in Perth bud-

dy, was a pleasure playing with you!!!"

McGrath added: "Well done Punter on an incredible career. It

would be great to see you nish with a ton. It was an honour

to play alongside of you #legend."

debut as Ponng lost the Ashes for the rst me

in 2005, voiced his admiraon.

"Ricky Ponng RETIRES.... ONE OF THE GREATS!" he

wrote.

"I always got excited playing AUS, so I could watch him

Michael Vaughan, the England captain in the 2005 Ashes,

wrote on Twier: "The best batsman I had the privilege

to play against ... Ricky Ponng... #Punter. Australian

cricket will not be the same without him."

Ponng's only Ashes success as skipper came in the 5 -0

whitewash six years ago over an England team led by

Andrew Flinto.

While Ponng is bringing down the curtain on his glori-

ous career, Flinto was preparing to begin a new one in

the boxing ring, and at a promoon for his rst ght told

Sky Sports News: "He's amazing, he's one of the best

batsmen ever to play the game.

"He's nally called it a day - fantasc career, tough com-

petor, someone I loved playing against.

"He'll be missed in Australian cricket but also world

cricket - top man."

Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the ONeill Coldwater Classicat Santa Cruzs Steamer Lane, has been completed and won byTaj Burrow (AUS), 34.

Heading into the final event of the season, the Billabong Pipe Masters, three surfers remain math-ematically in contention for the 2012 ASP World Title: Joel Parkinson (AUS), 31, Kelly Slater

Due to the altered format for the Billabong Pipe Masters, all three surfers will automatically be

2012 marks 50 of racing V8 Supercars racing at the icon of

motorsport in Australia Bathurst 1000 in New South Wales,

Mount Panorama.

Race fans who have grown up watching the V8 Supercars

from the early days will know that the wheel has come full

circle with the re-introducon of a car maker that has al-

you would not know that come 2013 will be the 2nd coming

for Nissan. As Nissan has already tasted the bitumen of many

The new kid on the grid will be Mercedes Benz, we have all

The Car of the Future was ocially unveiled at the Sydney Telstra 500 ahead of Its 2013 racing debut. Ozsports gives you the

laymans guide to COTF..

FOR well over 12 months, talk of V8 Supercars Car of the Future (COTF) has been

buzzing around the V8 Supercars Championship paddock.

Theres been plenty wrien and said by media and fans-some of it inaccurateabout COTF is, why its being undertaken and

what it all means. Some dont understand it, while others have simply overanalysed it.

So, what does it mean?

Put simply, the DNA of V8 Supercar racing will not change from 2013 when this new generaon of cars takes over from the

Falcons and Commodores that currently make up the grid.

The cars will sll feature V8 engines, rear-wheel drive and four doors. Theyll also connue to make the same roar and be just

as fast, if not actually faster. Currently, the chassis beneath the skin of the Falcon and Commodore are all extremely similar,

with the next step being a control chassisits cheaper and is also aimed at making it easier for other potenal manufacturesto build a V8 Supercar.

A Commodore will sll have the DNA of a Commodore, dio for a Falcon or any other type of car that joins in.

The doors will sll open and close, the panels are the same shape and style of the road car, and the badges are real too!

A manufacturer wanng to join V8 Supercars Championship could even come along with their own V8 engine, used under a

parity system to ensure its on par with the current units in the class, or use a category engine if they wish to go with already -

established technology.

The control chassis could then up the potenal for a new manufacturer to join V8 Supercar racing. Regardless of whether an-

other manufacturer joins the V8 Supercars eld, the change is sll an important and necessary one for the future of the class.

Reducing costs is a key focus of COTF and its expected that the cost of building a new car will reduce by around half in com-

parison to a current specicaon machine. As a direct result, any repairs to the new cars will also be cheaper and less labour

intensive as well.

One of the things COTF does is that it increases the market relevance of the cars in the motoring world, says Chairman of

the V8 Supercars Commission, Mark Skaife.

The current regulaons have been in place since 1993 and very few categories can boast that sort of technical stability over

almost 20 years . This is just an evoluon of them.

We have applied a proper business case analysis in an eort to curb dollars spent, as the cost of winning a Championship has

roughly doubled in the last 15 years.

Aer all, if the cars are cheaper to build, teams are more likely to be able to

have addional cars constructed and available. Expanding the calendar and

racing more oen which is the long held goal of V8 Supercars Chairman

Tony Cochrane, who has started his desire for up to 18 events in future

becomes far more praccal.

Finally, connual safety improvements are of paramount importance in all

forms of motorsport, and the same is also true with COTF .

That said, more events mean more racing for everyone: TV viewers, fans a

nd sponsors. It would keep racing in front of the consumer more oen and

avoid the large gaps in the calendar that have previously made it dicult for

the sport to gain tracon in major media outlets in comparison with ball

sports that take place every weekend.

The new cars will have a fuel tank that will be moved forward from the boot

and sit inside the main chassis. That means the reball that engulfed Karl

Reindlers at Barbagallo earlier in the year would be less likely in future in the

case of a rear end collision.

A collapsible steering column, new re exnguisher system and added side

protecon are all features of a COTF spec V8 Supercar, while windscreens will

become polycarbonate, the overall weight of the car will drop by about 100kgand 18 inch tyres will be introduced for the rst me.

Engines will be posioned 100mm further rearwards for safety as well as

reducing costs in the case of severe accident damage.

Independent Rear Suspension and a transaxle gearbox will also be a new

feature technically, more reecve of modern road cars and keeping with the

theme of increasing motoring market relevance.

V8 Supercars have commissioned Queensland based Pace Innovaons to

construct two prototype cars built to COTF designs one a Falcon and one a

Commodore and have been tesng them on a variety of circuits before all

nal technical

Specicaons are locked down. The nal examples were unveiled at the

Sydney Telstra 500.

As much as COTF may seem confusing, the end is that race fans, whether

casual or hard-core, shouldnt worry too much.

The cars will essenally look the same from the outside; theyll sll make that

unique V8 Supercar growl and the best drivers from this part of the world, and

somemes the other, will sll be ghng it out for the tle.

Cung costs, having more races, making the drivers safer and potenally

welcoming a new competor into the mix cant be

such a bad thing, despite what the naysayers would tell you.

V8 Supercars will move to an 18-inch tyre slightly bigger than the long

used 17 inch with Dunlop retaining the deal to provide rubber to the series

aer singing a new deal that will take them through to 2017 as ocial tyre

supplier.

Dunlop Motorsports Manager Kevin Fiitzsimons says the change wont be

very noceable.

Cosmecally, you cant really tell the dierence, he says.

The tread is sll the same width, its just missing half an inch out of the side-

wall. It wont look a great deal dierent what we have now.

Having a bigger tyre gives a lot more exibility as to the variety of braking

packages you can t inside the wheel as well.

Cars all over the world are being made with 18 inch wheels now so were

going with the ow and moving along with that.

Most race cars around the world, parcularly in GT racing, use 18-

inch too soits more of a common size.

The tyre will be stronger in the materials that are used to make it. I ts sll a s

compromise tyre that has to be used on 16 dierent circuits in all sorts of

temperatures and it has to be used on the front (to steer) and the rear (to

drive) of the cars, which doesn't happen with other categories around the

world, which have dedicated and dierent tyres for each end of the

car.

Adelaide United FC is delighted to announce it has locked in another of its impressive foreign brigade with Portu-guese winger Fabio Ferreira signing a two year extension to stay at the club.

Less than 48 hours after Argentine Jeronimo Neumann recommitted to the Reds on a new two year contract, Fer-reira has also agreed to terms for the next two Hyundai A-League seasons.

Plucked from second division NSW club Dulwich Hill by the Reds back in August, Ferreira has made an immediateimpact in the Hyundai A-League, playing every game and scoring twice.

The 23 year old, who spent a year at English Premier League giants Chelsea, has settled in well to Adelaide and isdelighted to be given the opportunity to secure the next stage in his career.

Im very happy. I really like the club and its very important for me to be able to sign a new deal, Ferreira said.

The club has been really good for me, as well as the team and the fans, I really like being here and Im excited thatI will be staying in Adelaide for a longer period.

Reds fans were treated to the quality Ferreira is capable of producing last Friday night as he frequently made dam-aging runs out wide in the win over Melbourne Victory, his performance highlighted by a first class strike in the 22ndminute.

Willing to take a punt on Ferreira with his career seemingly at the crossroads, Adelaide United Coach John Kosminasaid he was pleased the former Portugal Under 19 representative had found his feet in the Hyundai A -League andhe was confident he could be a player that would give the Reds an extra dimension in the attacking half of the pitch.

Its terrific that weve been able to secure Fabio for another two years, Kosmina said.

He came here knowing it was an opportunity to show what he is made of and in the first ten rounds he hasnt disap-pointed.

I think he has proved that he can compete at this level, and with his pace and skill on the ball, Im sure he is goingto continue to cause a lot of defenders in the A-League headaches so Im glad that weve managed to keep himhere.

Perth favourite Casey Dellacqua has been forced to with-

draw from the Hyundai Hopman Cup due to

injury.

The West Australian nave was looking forward to playing in

front of her home crowd, but a foot injury the

former top 40 player picked up in Osaka in October proved

to be her downfall.

So disappointed to withdraw from Hopman Cup due to afoot injury sustained in Osaka, said Dellacqua.

Its a Peroneal Brevis tear and although its geng beer

every day its not going to be ready in me for

Perth and I cant rush my return to compeon. I really

hope I can try and play in Hobart if Im ready and if I

get a wildcard.

I always love playing at Hopman Cup, the people of Perth

always get behind me and its a great feeling to

have so much support. I was also really looking forward to

being part of history and playing at the new

Perth Arena. Hopefully I have the chance to come back next

year.

Dellacqua was due to team with Australias Bernard Tomic in

the December 29 to 5 January event. A

replacement for Dellacqua will be announced shortly.

We are so disappointed for Casey that shes had to with-

draw from the Hyundai Hopman Cup and wish her

all the very best for a speedy recovery, said Event Director

Steve Ayles.

I know how much playing this event means to her and

Football's back, and how!

It was a painstakingly long o season that provided many talking points, but unlike previous seasons, the topics leading

up to Round 1 of the 2012-13 Hyundai A-League season were posive to say the least. So much so that Berisha's contro-

versial penalty in the Grand Final was quickly forgoen.

Ange Postecoglu jumped ship to the highly disappoinng Melbourne Victory, who ended the season in turmoil. Hiring the

league's best coach quickly brought the focus back to Melbourne, and so did the conclusion of the Kewell saga, as he quit

the club cing family reasons.

Sydney FC pursued Graham Arnold as they looked to replace the outgoing Lavicka, but were knocked back. Though they

eventually promoted Youth Team coach Ian Crook to the top job, the club had designs on a transfer that would change

the face of Australian football.

When news rst broke of Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero's potenal move to Sydney FC,

the country was licking their lips in ancipaon, yet with negavity surrounding the last couple of

seasons, no one really truly believed it unl the day he was conrmed, and suddenly everything

changed.

Not even Adelaide United's quarter nal run in the AFC Champions League could steal some me-

dia from the arrival of Del Piero. His arrival would prove pivotal in the month leading up to the

opening weekend.

Newcastle Jets soon came in with the news of Emile Heskey's signing, aer spending his whole

career in the English Premier League. Suddenly talk of more big names joining the league became

a common theme. The excitement was building.

All this and hardly anybody noced the new boys West Sydney Wanderers were moving along under the radar. Having

appointed Tony Popovic as the manager, he quickly set up his squad from the back, bringing in experience with Ante

Covic, Michael Beauchamp and Nikolai Topor-Stanley, while also securing the services of excing youngster Aaron Mooy.

But they also got in on the act in the Marquee hunt. Shinji Ono, a Japanese veteran who saw success with Feyenoord and

Urawa Red Diamonds was signed by the Wanderers, amidst rumours of Michael Ballack being interested in joining.

Suddenly the coverage of the league was magnied all around, and the negave vibe that had been crippling the league

suddenly became posive. All the hope and opmism was restored.

The Melbourne Derby that opened the season saw Ange Postecoglu's new chargers fail to get o to a good start, losing tonew coach John Aloisi's new look Heart side. The biggest crowd of the season to date this season 42,032, helped set an

aendance record for an enre round in Australian domesc football history, as 93,500 poured through the gates all

weekend.

Adelaide got o to the best start, having only suered defeat to a Melbourne Victory ouit who were close to ringing the

crisis bells. The Reds who had their AFC Champions League quarter nal e against Bunyodkor, used their early start to

the season to great eect, and with eight games gone, sit two points clear at the top of the table aer eight games to

date.Following closely behind are the ever consistent Central Coast Mariners. Graham Arnold's troops have begun the

season in the same vein as they started the last. Without a doubt the highlight so far coming in the 7-2 defeat of Sydney

FC, where Daniel McBreen deed his advanced years to put on a sensaonal display to score the rst ever hat trick by a

Central Coast Mariner. The xture against the Melbourne Victory also saw possibly the best football ever played in thehistory of the A-League in the rst half. Though the second half saw the game soured by red cards to Zwaanswijk and Flo-

res (for Melbourne) the rst half surely set the new bar for the league.

The blue and white boys

from Melbourne current sit in third, and have rmed as a strong contender for the tle. The campaign got o to the worst

start, losing the derby and to Brisbane 5-0, but the response has seen 4 wins in the next 6 games. Their football is geng

beer each week as Ange Postecoglu insls his principles into the side, mainly evident in the most recent oung away to

West Sydney, as the Victory baled to win 2-0 following a red card to debutant Gallagher in just the 16th minute.

It was tough to take for the new boys in West Sydney, as they just could not break down the stubborn Victory ouit. Their

start to the season has surprised many doubters. Having taken a while to score their rst goal, it eventually came in a 1 -0

win at Suncorp Stadium. Popovic's new boys have a sound defence, making them hard to break down. The rst Sydney Der-

by also saw plenty of media aenon, as Parramaa Stadium was sold out. While the Wanderers lost, they have not been

overawed by the new stage and have certainly proven to be compeve, sing in 6th.

The same cannot be said for their city rivals Sydney FC however, as everything has gone pear shaped for the Sky Blues. Del

Piero's arrival has seen media aenon sky rocket in Sydney, but Crook's men failed to inspire, and they currently prop up

the table, while Crook resigned following a tough loss to the Melbourne Victory having seen a 2-0 lead slip. Del Piero has

shown his class, but the team has been a complete let down up to this point of the season. The showdown with Newcastle

early in the season saw the two big Marquees go head to head, and Sydney were outplayed at home.

Newcastle Jets have started the season relavely well, though they have had their ups and downs. Emile Heskey has proved

to be a great signing so far, but so have Craig Goodwin and Mark Birighi. The two youngsters have been key performers in

the Jet's best displays this season, and a table posion of 4th is quite deserving. Perhaps the biggest blip

so far however has come at home to the Phoenix, as they lost 3-0.

Always everyone's p to struggle, the Kiwi ouit has proved the crics wrong again so far, sing 7th in

the table, showing glimpses of brilliance like the one in the Hunter, while proving a tough side to beat

home and away no maer the line up. Even with six players out on internaonal duty, they managed to

scrape a 1-1 draw against the Heart. Their games have all been closely run contests, and with a bit more

luck maybe could've been higher in the table. That point proved when they were harshly done by in Ade-

laide with a controversial decision against Sigmund who was adjudged have fouled Jeronimo when re-

plays proved it was harsh. Their most recent contest against Perth Glory ended 1 -1, as they showed im-

mense character to upset the hosts to draw the match.

Last year's beaten grand nalists started the season by exacng revenge on Brisbane as they won 1-0 at

Patersons Stadium. The Glory have been a bit hit and miss however, looking brilliant at mes but poor at others. This is

highlighted by their wins against Newcastle and Heart, while losing very disappoinngly to Sydney and not taking their

chances in the defeat against a 10 men West Sydney Wanderers. Ian Ferguson's men currently sit in 5th and should be con-

tenders if they can get some consistency together.

Brisbane Roar have been somewhat of a disappointment so far this season, as they currently lie second last in the league,

with their worst start in the history of the club's history. Following in Postecoglu's footsteps isn't easy, and Rado Vidosic has

had lile to cheer about. The 5-0 drubbing of Melbourne Victory without a doubt the highlight so far, while beang Sydney

4-2 showcased more class. However, the drubbing suered against Melbourne Heart and defeats to West Sydney, Perth,

Central Coast and Adelaide showed that they are not the same force as they were in the last couple of seasons.

Finally there's the other Melbourne boys. John Aloisi has sure had a tough start to his managerial career. Victory in the der-

by and against Brisbane are their only highlights of the season. They have otherwise been disappoinng, showing lapses of

concentraon to drop crucial points against Newcastle and Wellington. Lying in 8th, they have plenty of work to do in the

lead up to the next derby, where a loss against the Victory could begin to derail their nals hopes.

It's certainly been a start to the season worth talking, watching and reading about. With another 19 rounds to come, all the

teams in the league sll have a chance to change their fortunes or even take the iniave and run away with the tle. The

Marquee men have made a splash, and so have some other new faces in the league. It's going to be an entertaining few

months ahead!

Summer me in Australia means Christmas, BBQs and

spending a lot of me at the beach and of course sports

cricket and plenty of it and tennis with the Australian Open

Series hong up hing some of the best tennis centres Aus-

tralia has to oer culminang in the Australian Open in Janu-

ary the rst Grand Slam of the year. Taking place at Olympic

Park in Melbourne, Australia from the 14th27th of January

2013.

The cricket has already kicked o with Australia sadly unable

to take the No. 1 Test team mantle away from South Africa.

Both teams playing 3 tests two of the tests ending in a draw

and South Africa winning the 3rd test and keeping the man-

tle of No. 1 Test Team in the ICC rankings. Australia now

moves on to playing Sri Lanka in a three test series.

Keeping on the topic of cricket at the end of the South Africa,

Australia Series Ricky Ponng pulled up

stumps on his internaonal test career. Read

League T20 is underway in Australia. All the

Ozsports Online Sports Network is a small totally volunteer media outlet being staed totally by sports fans and me-

dia students. Everyone involved in Ozsports Online Sports Network have an interest in sports and media. We have come

together to combine our two favourite things sports and media.

Ozsports began as an idea of founder and Chief In Editor Darren Andrews who is a sports fan and a media and is stud-

ying a Bachelor in Media Communicaon. Darren has volunteered in many facets of the media most of these opportunies

have been in the form of internaonal sporng events. Darren has been a media assistant and Logiscs at the

2000 .Summer Olympics and Para Olympics in Sydney Australia. 2003 saw Darren back at his role of the media assistant at

the IRB Rugby World Cup working at the Adelaide matches. 2006 Darren was also a media assistant at the Asian Womens

Cup. Darren has since volunteered in the media role at the IRB Rugby 7s when Adelaide, Australia held a round. Darren has

also hosted a breakfast show on a community radio staon along with the role of breakfast producer with another commu-

nity radio staon.

As you can see with a person like Darren at the helm of Ozsports we have a wealth of experience in the sports and media

eld. Along with the other members of sta who are currently also studying journalism.

As already been pointed out Ozsports is a small media outlet with a very small budget. For Ozsports to move ahead

and become a gain a bigger hold in the sports, media market we need to expand and develop other mediums to be compe-

ve in the sports, media arena.

Areas we are very keen to get involved in is a weekly sports show, live sports streaming an to be able to be able to

develop the Ozsports website with more features for our viewers and to be able to have Fourth Quarter printed and distrib-

uted through shops.

There are so many more avenues we would like to explore with

funding we ll we can take our dreams from drawing table to reality.

HOCKEY INDIA LEAGUE

Fieen Australian players were selected at last nightsaucon

for the newly formed Hockey India League (HIL) which starts

on 16 January 2013.

Led by Kookaburras Co-Captains Jamie Dwyer, Mark Knowles,

Fergus Kavanagh and Eddie Ockenden, Australia was the most

well represented overseas country with 15players selected in

comparison to the Netherlands and Pakistan with 9 players

each.

The Hockey India League is made up of ve franchises, with

each of the squads comprising 10 overseas and 14 Indian play-

ers.

Two Australian coaches will take charge in the HIL with cur-

rent Kookaburras coach Ric Charlesworth at the helm of the

Mumbai Magicians, which selected four Australian players,

and Kookaburras 2004 Olympic gold medal winning coach,

Barry Dancer the head coach of Jaypee Punjab Warriors,
