Restoration of USAF Aircraft at Aviation Challenge “If Not US, Who?”
A dedicated team of chapter volunteers havebeen developing a program for restoring theUSAF F-4 and F-111 aircraft on display at theAviation Challenge campus, which is part of theUSSpaceandRocketCenter(USSRC).Theaircraftare deteriorating, and neither the Air ForceMuseum(whoactuallyownstheaircraft)northe
USSRC have the funding to restorethem. Our chapterhasbeentalkingaboutrestoringthemforthelast5yearsorsobutcouldseem to getno traction. About 1year ago,we decided to go full-bore to get those aircraftrestored, using themantra, “ifnot us helping torestorethem, thenwhowoulddoit?” Initially, we photographed the aircraft as avisual way of characterizing all of the manydeZicienciesintheircondition.Thesephotographswould serve as the basis of the requiredrestoration work. We noted many deteriorationissues with each aircraft since they have beenexposed to the climate challenges here in
NorthernAlabamaformanyyears.Subsequently,we invited several restoration vendors toevaluatetheaircraft. Withvendorassistance, weprepared a draft Statement of Work (SOW) toaddress all of the restoration issues needed torestore thesevintageUSAF aircraft. AFA National Convention By Russ Lewey AFA South Central Region President
Some comparegoing to aNational Conventionaswatchingsausagebeingmade.Idon’tgotoseehow the sausage ismadebut, more importantly,to see who’s making it. The convention is anexcellent place to network and learnnew ideas, some that have worked and others that, quitefrankly, haven’t.
Thisyear’sConventionwasno exception, someoftheexcitementbeganevenbeforetheopeninggavelwas struck at theGaylordNational ResortandConventionCenter. HurricaneFlorencewasthreateningtheEastCoast;atonepoint, itlookedas if we would be forced to cancel. As it was,Florencedecidedtomake landfall in theareaofWilmington,NCandthenturntoSouthCarolina.ThoughthismoveenabledtheConventiontotakeplace as scheduled, it did lead to majordevastation throughout the Carolinas. Inaddition, the cancelled airline Zlights did impactthe ability for some delegates to participate. Intheend, a little over150delegates made it, andtheConventioncommencedontime. All inall, thenews at theConventionwasverygood.AfteranumberofyearsofaustereZinancialreports, thePresidentandChairmanoftheBoardboth talked about how both the Air, Space, andCyber Conference and the Air WarfareSymposiumwere sold out, forcing AFA to moveall nonpaying clients outside of the actualconventionhall. This isgreatnews, asthesetwoevents are major fundraisers for AFA.Furthermore, for the Zirst time in quite awhile,AFAhadn'tseenadeclineinmembership.

positions had different terms of ofZice andperiodically(asthecasewasthisyear)results inall threeofZiceholders changing out at the sametime. Thedelegatesagreedthatthiswouldnotbean ideal situation and agreed to stagger/modifythetermlimitstoeliminatethissituation. Following a presentation by the MitchellInstitute and a discussion, both on and off theConvention Zloor, AFA took a position on theproposedestablishmentofaSpaceForce. AFA’sposition recommends taking a conditions-basedapproach to determine the optimum timingwould provides a higher likelihood of success.EstablishingaUSSpace Force requiresamaturespacepower theory andspacestrategy—neitheris developed. Creating a US Space Force in anattempt to later develop the strategy risksnational security and could result in abureaucratic loadon theDepartment ofDefense(DoD). I realize thatnot everyone inAFA agrees withthis premise. Personally, I was impressed thatAFAelectedtotakeastand.Apositionthatthosein DoD, to include the Air Force, can’t publiclytake as itwasestablishedby the Commander inChief. The willingness for AFA to take thispositionshowsitistrulycommittedto itsvision:“dedicatedtodominantair, space, andcyberspacepower, astrongnationaldefense.” The Vice Chairman for Field Operations, MacMacAloon, hasdirectedtheFieldCouncilandAFAStaff to examine ways that we canwork to getmore members to attend and participate inourNational Convention. We have looked atdecoupling the Convention from the Air, Space, andCyber Conference, whichwould allow us tomove the Convention around the Nation.Recognizing that the cost to attend theConvention is a deterrent for some, he hasdirectedthatwelookatwaystolowercosts. Insummary, theConventionisanexcellentwaytomeetoldandmakenew friends. Volksmarch 2018 By Bailey Erickson
For those of us who served in Europe, weremember a “Volksmarch” as being a fun timeoutdoors with friends and family and a time tolearnallaboutatownonfootinsteadofwhizzingby in a car. After registering at the City Stadium on CelticDrive, participants set off on foot with theirfamilies, dogs, friends,andco-workersto exploreall there was to see. A Sweet Opportunity By Russ Lewey
Sunday at the National Convention, time is setaside to honor those AFA members who havepassedawaysincethepreviousconvention. Thisyearwas no exception, andwe were pleased tosee the ceremony take place at the Air Force
Memorial once again. As an added treat, theservicewasfollowedbyanobservanceofthe70thAnniversaryoftheBerlinAirlift.Jointlyhostedbythe GermanEmbassy, the Air Force Association(AFA),andtheAirliftersAssociation. Becausemyfather was assigned to Templehof Air Base inBerlin in the 60s, this event was especiallymemorable.
One of the highlights was an opportunity tospeak with the “Candy Bomber”, Col HalHalverson. For those not familiar, then-LtHalverson became famous during the BerlinAirlift fordropping candy (viasmall parachutes)tothechildrenofBerlin.Though96yearsold,ColHalversonwalkedupto theMemorial andspokeof his exploits. Just prior to the start of theceremony,IwasabletospeakwithColHalverson.I mentioned that itwas an honor to see him inperson, again, as he was the Commander ofTemplehofduring my father’s tour. He quicklyresponded, “thatwas awhileago!” Ispokehowthe Tennessee Valley Chapter had conducted asummer-long program on the “Candy Bomber”forthechildrenofMadisonCountyin2015.
