President’s letter of introduction

Music@CMAF Art@CMAFOur 2012 music programme includes performers old and new, and continues the traditions of Calne Music and Arts Festival (CMAF) in celebrating music from our community by promoting local musical talent and nurturing education in the musical arts.

This year sees many new events including a lunchtime recital for percussion and voice (Event 11), singers Peter Grant and Michelle Sheridan (13), the newly formed B J Big Band from Chippenham (27) and members of the UK Boogie Woogie Club (7). The foundations will also be laid for a Community Orchestra during this year’s Festival, which will evolve from Calne Chamber Ensemble and include both amateur and professional musicians (26). Following the success of previous years, we have extended our Piano Marathon; the highlight of which will be a performance of Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ introduced by Keith Abrams (31). Our programme also includes many old faces including Calne Choral Society (6) and the Gaulois Brothers (37), as well as performances by many of our local schools (16, 17, 23, 25).

The 2012 Festival certainly provides music for all tastes and ages from Opera to Jazz and from Baroque to music of the 21st Century.

Simon Parker - Music Advisor

Visual and creative arts are strongly represented here in Calne. Every year the open Art exhibition seems to display an ever improving range and quality of artworks making the art exhibition at Marden House a much appreciated and well attended aspect of the Festival. If you are a local artist and have never exhibited with us but would like to do so please contact me for an application form, or visit the website for more details.

In addition to the Open Art Exhibition we have a delightful display of artworks created by the primary school children of Calne at the local library, a digital image competition, a poetry competition, photography by Calne Woodlands Camera Club, and this year we will be introducing a new feature - the Short Film Competition which will run properly from next year.

Local artists also participate in an Open Studios programme which is a great chance to meet local artists and experience their work in a more intimate way. I encourage you all to get out there and visit them in their studios.

I hope you all enjoy the creative arts represented in the Festival this year.

Gordon Burns - Art Director

What a feast of music and the arts is on offer for the eleven days of this Festival! As we enter our 38th year, we are one of the longest running Festivals in Wiltshire.

We are very fortunate to have, living in Calne and the surrounding villages, so many talented artists, musicians, authors and film directors, both amateur and professional, who feature regularly in our programme. We also welcome the involvement over the years of the many groups who add to the cultural life of the town: Calne Choral, Calne Artists’ Group, Calne Camera Club, Calne Baroque, The David Ryder Jazz Club and Calne Silver Band. We are grateful to the management of the Heritage Centre and Calne Library for the support they offer for various events, and we are proud to have Marden House as our main concert venue, with its great facilities and concert grand. This year we have concerts from The John Bentley School, St. Mary’s School, and Marlborough College students and a repeat of ‘Voices from Primary Schools’ - a massed choir of over 200 primary school children which was so successful last year.

As usual, members of the Committee have worked tirelessly throughout the year to put together a varied programme of concerts, recitals, choral works, folk, jazz, talks, dance, poetry, art and film. We hope therefore that you will find in this programme many events to enjoy.
