Cat Tales 23 – Dr. J Summer Break

Everything’s fine. Grandma’s fine in her new assisted living

home in Sunnyvale. Curry got back up and led the

Warriors to a second world championship. And the Sharks,

well ….. So, with a chance to finally rest, I’m on my shady

porch on a well-deserved vacation from the rigors of

pawing away at my typewriter to please all my readers

and fans!

My next month’s installment will be entitled ‘A Thousand

Julys” and will feature what it’s like to have nine lives to live

and celebrate. Stay tuned.

In the meanwhile, my suggested prescription: Eat light,

hydrate a lot, play well, sleep deep, and on those lazy

crazy days of summer, put your feet up in the afternoon

and enjoy a healthy nap; good for you, as you can see

from my selfie above!

Freda, did you see the e-mail titled Heavens to

Murgatroyd! that I left on the desk for you to

read? Would you believe the email spellchecker did

not recognize the word murgatroyd? I tried several

variations, mergatroyd, mergatroid, mirgatroid,

mirgatroyd, and none was recognized.

Maybe the sender should have chosen Heavens to

Betsy for the title, Freddy.

Maybe! But it got me to thinking about other lost words from our younger

years. So, I made a list of some words and phrases I remember and, also,

remember not hearing so much anymore. I did a search on Google and

found an article by Richard Lederer, titled Old Words And Phrases Remind

Us Of The Way We Word.

I think this would be a good way to practice your newly learned internet

link skills; that is, if you have the moxie to try?

Of course, I have the moxie, Freddy! I’m not a nincompoop, you know.

Well! I’ll be a monkey’s uncle! You already found and read the article

before I mentioned it, didn’t you, m’dear?!?!

Yes, and I thought your brothers and my sister would enjoy reading it, too!

About a month ago in this space, I illuminated old expressions that have

become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These

phrases included don’t touch that dial, carbon copy, you sound like a

broken record and hung out to dry. A bevy of readers have asked me to

shine light on more faded words and expressions, and I am happy to

oblige:

Back in the olden days we had a lot of moxie. We’d put on our best bib

and tucker and straighten up and fly right. Hubba-hubba! We’d cut a

rug in some juke joint and then go necking and petting and smooching

and spooning and billing and cooing and pitching woo in hot rods and

jalopies in some passion pit or lovers’ lane. Heavens to Betsy! Gee

whillikers! Jumpin’ Jehoshaphat! Holy moley! We were in like Flynn and

living the life of Riley, and even a regular guy couldn’t accuse us of being

a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all the tea in China!

Back in the olden days, life used to be swell, but when’s the last time

anything was swell? Swell has gone the way of beehives, pageboys and

the D.A.; of spats, knickers, fedoras, poodle skirts, saddle shoes and pedal

pushers. Oh, my aching back. Kilroy was here, but he isn’t anymore.

Like Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle and Kurt Vonnegut’s Billy Pilgrim,

we have become unstuck in time. We wake up from what surely has been

just a short nap, and before we can say, “I’ll be a monkey’s uncle!” or “This

is a fine kettle of fish!” we discover that the words we grew up with, the

words that seemed omnipresent as oxygen, have vanished with scarcely

a notice from our tongues and our pens and our keyboards.

Poof, poof, poof go the words of our youth, the words we’ve left behind.

We blink, and they’re gone, evanesced from the landscape and

wordscape of our perception, like Mickey Mouse wristwatches, hula

hoops, skate keys, candy cigarettes, little wax bottles of colored sugar

water and an organ grinder’s monkey.

Where have all those phrases gone? Long time passing. Where have all

those phrases gone? Long time ago: Pshaw. The milkman did it. Think

about the starving Armenians. Bigger than a bread box. Banned in

Boston. The very idea! It’s your nickel. Don’t forget to pull the chain. Knee

high to a grasshopper. Turn-of-the-century. Iron curtain. Domino theory.

Fail safe. Civil defense. Fiddlesticks! You look like the wreck of the

Hesperus. Cooties. Going like sixty. I’ll see you in the funny papers. Don’t

take any wooden nickels. Heavens to Murgatroyd! And awa-a-ay we go!

Oh, my stars and garters! It turns out there are more of these lost words

and expressions than Carter had liver pills.

This can be disturbing stuff, this winking out of the words of our youth, these

words that lodge in our heart’s deep core. But just as one never steps into

the same river twice, one cannot step into the same language twice.

Even as one enters, words are swept downstream into the past, forever

making a different river.

We of a certain age have been blessed to live in changeful times. For a

child each new word is like a shiny toy, a toy that has no age. We at the

other end of the chronological arc have the advantage of remembering

there are words that once did not exist and there were words that once

strutted their hour upon the earthly stage and now are heard no more,

except in our collective memory. It’s one of the greatest advantages of

aging. We can have archaic and eat it, too.

The Villa in Italy

hooked ever since, reading the rest of her books.

Ingredients 1 pound(s) turkey breast cutlets or slices

3 Tbsp all-purpose flour

1 salt and ground pepper to taste

1 Tbsp olive oil, divided

1/4 cup(s) water

1/4 cup(s) dry white wine or chicken broth

1 Tbsp butter or margarine

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

2 tsp finely chopped fresh sage or 1/2 teaspoon dried sage,

crushed

1/2 tsp instant chicken bouillon

Directions 1. Coat cutlets with flour; sprinkle with salt and pepper.

2. Heat 1 1/2 tsps olive oil in large, non-stick skillet over medium-

high heat.

3. Add half of cutlets; cook on each side for 1 to 2 minutes or until

no longer pink in center.

4. Remove from skillet; keep warm.

5. Repeat with remaining olive oil and cutlets.

6. Add water, wine, butter, garlic, sage and bouillon to skillet.

7. Bring to a boil; cook for 1 to 2 minutes.

8. Add cutlets to skillet; reduce heat to low.

Cook, stirring and turning cutlets over to coat, for 1 to 2 minutes.

For a light dinner entree try this Turkey

Scaloppini recipe. Only 220 calories per serving,

this dish uses turkey breasts, white wine, garlic, sage,

and chicken bouillon.

No reading of the minutes from May.

Movie Night for Casablanca was well attended. Unfortunately, the

sound track was difficult to understand. The next movie night will be a

musical, Two Tickets to Broadway, so dialogue will not be as important.

The date is set for June 25, 2016.

The recycle program is going well so we will continue. The next pick-up

will be July 2nd. Residents should put their CRVs out at the mailbox by

10:00 am.

Buddy System was brought up again. We still need a coordinator. If

anyone can volunteer, the responsibilities are limited. Please contact

Marie (408)744-1025.

Mike reminded us that there is a new SNAP class starting in September.

New Business

Jeanette asked if half of the raffle money for the next event be donated

to the Craft group. The motion was passed.

She also observed that the pictures submitted to Fox Tales are too dark to

be enjoyed. We will investigate how to get better pictures.

A raise in the amount of dues charged was discussed. No action was

taken.

A rule has been put in place to limit 2 prizes per person at future raffles. It

will be advertised at the time that raffle tickets are sold.

4th of July charges for guests will be Adults $5, Children 5-10 $3, and

Children under 5 Free. We will have a raffle with a Grand Prize as well as

many other desirable prizes.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:50pm.
