Unique ‘Square Pulse’OutputiPulse-based systems are smaller andmore portable than conventional IPLs.They provide effective clinical response at lower energy, substantially cuttingcosts and making the treatment morecomfortable for patients.

This is all made possible because of theunique ‘square pulse’ output that lies atthe very heart of iPulse technology.

Constant Current = Constant SpectrumAll IPL devices function on the sameprinciple: when a flash lamp produces theappropriate wavelength spectrum output,that light is absorbed by the targetstructures on the skin (like the hair shaft)and is converted into heat, which createsthe desired therapeutic affect (such as disabling hair re-growth.)

The spectrum output of the flash lamp varies in direct proportion to thecurrent which goes through the flashlamp. In conventional IPL systems, thecurrent surges through the lamp in awave, producing a variable pattern ofcurrent; as a result, the spectrum outputof the lamp varies widely during the pulse.At the peak of this wave, the spectrumoutput is inappropriate for treatment andmust be filtered out. Because much ofthe energy is wasted, treatments must be carried out at wastefully high energylevels that can often be uncomfortable to the patient.

The iPulse team have tackled thisproblem by developing unique circuitrythat creates a constant current ofenergy—a ‘square pulse’ (Figure 1.) This continuous current means that theoptimum spectrum output is constantlyproduced, without variation.

Square Pulse = Constant SpectrumThe ‘square pulse’ means little energy is wasted in generating unwantedfrequencies of light that must be filteredout, so iPulse-based systems canoperate at far lower energy levels withoutany reduction in treatment effectiveness.Plus, there is no need for costly andcumbersome additional filters.

Multiple Lamps = Increased Effective OutputiPulse employs a patented* multi-lampset-up, consisting of two short low voltagelamps that require less energy and lesscooling than the lamps used inconventional IPLs. This dual lamp createsa large and almost square treatment head.

When one long lamp is used in other IPLs,a significant amount of the energy emittedfrom the lamp is absorbed by the longsides of the glass block, never actuallyreaching the skin. This is known as‘perimeter loss’. With the two short lampsused by iPulse devices, all the lightproduced is effectively directed onto thetreatment area. The ratio of the sides tothe total treatment head is far lower thanthat in long treatment heads, radicallyreducing perimeter loss.

Larger Spot SizeFigure 2 illustrates how the larger spot sizeof iPulse treatment heads achieves a moreeffective depth of penetration than thesame energy (per cm2) delivered through a small spot size. For this reason themultiple lamp system allows iPulse todeliver even greater clinical performancewith less energy.
