2 Renew My Church / Renueva Mi Igleslia Grouping Team Retreat, part 2 Thank you for your prayers as our Renew My Church Grouping Feedback & Discernment Team attended a full-day retreat at the Cardinal Meyer Center last Satur-day. The day was filled with prayer, reflection and op-portunities to share with one another our hopes, con-cerns and ideas as we work together to help shape the future of our faith communities. Cardinal Cupich was able to join us for an hour and share his own thoughts about the renewal underway in our Archdiocese. Spending time together in prayer and hearing from the Cardinal was so important because on the surface all of our Renew My Church efforts can seem solely focused on the structural changes of our parishes. The percep-tion that what we’re doing is all about buildings and fi-nances is a view point held by many, but it is not the reality – it is not the core of what Jesus Christ is calling us to do. Spiritual renewal of our parishes and our Arch-diocese is at the heart of and reason for Renew My Church. When you consider the facts that we face: • Mass attendance has decreased by 27% over the past

20 years • Approx. 20% children baptized in the Catholic Church

do not receive 1st communion • Approx. 40% of children baptized are not confirmed 85% of children confirmed stop practicing their faith

by age 21 • 36% percent of Millennials (people born between 1982

and 2004) claim no affiliation with organized religion It is easier to understand the sense of urgency and why the structural and spiritual renewal must go hand-in-hand. How, where and when we spend our energies, resources, dollars and time has a very real impact on our abilities to develop the creative evangelizing plans that will bring more people into an encounter with the Risen Lord, with His Word and Sacraments proclaimed in our parishes and through our ministries. Jesus said: “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) Trusting in the Lord, we must bear fruit for the good of our Church. In the meantime, for more information about Renew My Church, you may go to the Archdiocese’s website, or ask me how to learn more.

MASS FOR THE WEEK

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK

SUNDAY READINGS INTRODUCTION HOW DO WE TREAT THE MESSENGER?

Let’s not be too hasty in defining who is “the wicked one” and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don’t like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own be-havior. We don’t like to be reproached for trans-gressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don’t like?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

How long have there been parochial schools in the United States? Longer than you may imagine. The Jesuit fathers opened Saint Mary School in Phil-adelphia in 1782 in the first light of independence. Catholic and Protestant squabbles about the nature of education forced the Fathers to make this risky and innovative venture in the heart of the city. The school was closed by a devastating fire in 1902, but reopened in 1968 as St. Mary Interparochial School, the first example of a shared parochial school. It is also the only Catholic school within the confines of a national park. This is the “Mother School” of this uniquely American institution. Many parochial schools, especially in “national parishes,” were es-tablished to preserve the culture and language of the “old country,” and also to protect young people from prejudice. In other countries, Ireland for one, the Church is authorized to run national schools, sometimes under the sponsorship of a parish. In still other places, such as Quebec, publicly-funded “separate schools” were administered by the Church. Wherever the state funds Catholic schools, normally enrollment is guar-anteed to all applicants. The Quebec system was dismantled in 1998 when the state decided to reor-ganize schools along linguistic lines rather than reli-gious affiliation. Parochial schools require considera-ble sacrifice, but they endure as a distinctive treas-ure of the Church in the United States.
