BE A ROCK Peter’s history as a follower or friend of Jesus is a bit spotty. It might be natural to wonder if Jesus, in giving him the keys to the kingdom, didn’t feel a bit like a parent giving a teenager the keys to the family car. But it was at the moment when God’s power and presence broke through everything else to raise up Peter’s great profes-sion of faith in Christ as Mes-siah that Jesus chose to establish the bond between the loving, forgiving mercy of heaven and our vocation to be witnesses of that love, mercy, and forgiveness on earth.

Like any parent, Jesus no doubt foresaw the failings, the irre-sponsible maneuvers or impaired senses, the collisions that the church would be headed for. But, most importantly, he also saw us at that moment as God prefers to see us: capable of manifest-ing great faith, with a willingness to remain at the feet of Christ to understand what it truly means to be Messiah and Christ. As the letter to the Romans points out to us today, we have not known the mind or the wisdom of God, but God knows us and still chooses to manifest the reign of justice, joy, beauty, and peace through us. Let this be our vocation. Let us always strive to be solid ground on which the church of Jesus Christ can be founded and on which it can continue to be built. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SÉ UNA ROCA La historia de Pedro como se-guidor o amigo de Jesús es un poco irregular. Resulta natural preguntarnos si Jesús, al darle las llaves del Reino, no se sintió un poco como el padre que le entrega a su adolescente las llaves del auto de la familia. Pero fue en el momento en que el poder y la presencia de Dios irrumpió traspasándolo todo para que brotara de Pedro la gran profesión de fe en Cristo como Mesías que Jesús eligió establecer el vínculo entre la misericordia amorosa de Dios y nuestra vocación como testigos de ese amor y ese perdón en la tierra.

Como cualquier padre, Jesús sin duda previó las fallas, las manio-bras irresponsables y los sentidos dañados, las colisiones hacia don-de se dirigiría la Iglesia. Pero, lo que es más importante, también nos vio en el momento en que Dios prefiere vernos: capaces de manifes-tar gran fe, con el deseo de permanecer a los pies de Cristo para comprender lo que realmente es ser Mesías y ser Cristo. Como nos lo señala hoy la carta a los romanos, no hemos conocido jamás el pen-samiento del Señor o llegado a ser su consejero, mas Dios nos cono-ce y aún elije para que manifestemos el reino de justicia, gozo, her-mosura y paz. Baptism Preparation Sessions

Parents of infants and/or toddlers who wish to have them bap-tized are required to participate in Baptism Preparation Sessions. These two-day series are only offered five times a year, and not every month, so parents need to plan ahead.

The next series (in preparation for baptism celebrations in October and November) will be in English on Thursday evenings (14 & 21 September) from 6:30 to 8:30 PM; and in Spanish on Monday evenings (11 & 18 September) from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

If you, or someone you know, is planning to baptize a child, please contact Mary Ann in the Parish Office (795-1633 x 102; mgielow@stcyril.com) to register. Do not select Godparents until after communicating with Mary Ann.

Preparación Bautismal Padres que deseen bautizar a sus bebés y niños pequeños necesitan

next Weekend – 2 and 3 September If you are following our income and spending re-ports, you may remember that our expenses for July were $5,945 more than our income. At this point in August, the difference between our income ($39,556) and expenses ($37,706) is $1,849. This means for the two months of July and August, we are at $4,096 in deficit spending. So, we will need a Deficit Fund Collection next weekend to help fill this gap.

Development Corner En el Área del Desarrollo Great News! Our Annual St. Patrick’s Day Raffle is moving! We are attaching this great, all-important

fundraiser to our Murder Mystery being held on Saturday, 28 October. This will provide

some “distance” between this raffle and our Feast Day Raffle. So get ready to participate

in this great event which is critical to our yearly income. We have set a goal of

$5,000 for this raffle. We did it before and I

am sure we can do it again. The prizes are a 1 week “time share” stay at the destination of your choice, a flat screen TV

and a $100 gift card. Raffle tickets are $20 each or 3 for $50 and are now on sale! The winning tickets will be drawn at

our murder mystery, Thirst for Blood. The evening will in-clude a great performance by our St. Cyril “shining stars”

God’s Heroes Support St. Cyril’s Los héroes de Dios ayudan a su parroquia

Attending to our Property Once again, we need to attend to a number of trees on our parish and school property. The pine tree in front of the stained glass window of the church and a mesquite tree at the entrance to Nicholson Hall have died and need to be re-moved. Others need to be trimmed back from roofs and over Pima St. This will cost $5,520 and will be paid for from monies in the parish’s Maintenance Fund and the school’s savings.

Cuidado de Nuestra Propiedad Nuevamente necesitamos atender a varios árboles alrededor de la propiedad de la parroquia y escuela. Se murieron el pino que se encuentra frente al vi-tral de la Iglesia y un mezquite que se encuentra en la entrada de Nicholson Hall y necesitamos remo-verlos. Otros árboles que caen sobre techos y sobre la calle Pima necesitan podarse. Esto lleva un costo de $5,520 y se pagaran de dineros del fondo de Mantenimiento y los ahorros de la escuela.

Religious Education Religious Education Classes began last Sunday. If your student was not pre-registered they will not attend classes until the week following their registra-tion. Registration will continue today and may be com-pleted in the Guadalupe Room or you may submit your packet to the Parish Office during regular office hours Monday–Thursday. No classes next Sunday.

Registration for the 2017–18 year is only open through Sunday, 10 September.

Religious Education Registration closes on 10 September, and reopens in January 2018 for classes January–May 2018. Students preparing for sacraments must attend the full year.

Catecismo Las clases de Educación Religiosa empezaron el domingo pasado. Si su alumno no está pre-inscrito, no podrá empe-zar clases hasta la semana después de la inscripción. Las ins-cripciones continúan hoy y se pueden hacer en el Salón Gua-dalupe o en la oficina parroquial durante las horas normales

de oficina de lunes a jueves. No hay clases el próximo domingo.

La inscripción para el ciclo 2017–18 estará abierta hasta el domingo 10 de septiembre.

Inscripciones para Educación Religiosa terminan el 10 de septiem-bre y se vuelven a abrir en enero del 2018 para clases de enero a mayo del 2018. Los estudiantes en preparación para los Sacramentos deben atender el ciclo completo.

Confirmation Preparation Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation

is a two consecutive year process. Registration continues through August.

All Students need to register in order to enter into sac-ramental preparation classes this August.

Confirmation I: Begins the 1½-year process for high school students who want to be confirmed in 2018. Classes start on Wednesday, 30 August at 6:30 PM in North/South.

Confirmation II: For high school students who were a part of the Youth Ministry–Catechetical Confirmation I pro-gram last year. Classes continue on Wednesday, 30 August at 6:30 PM in Dougherty Hall. Confirmation will be celebrated at the end of November.

Adult Faith Formation Classes Sundays from 11:15 AM until 12:45 PM

Adult Faith Formation sessions will be of-fered in English beginning on Sunday, 10 September. in the Retreat Room in Dougherty Activity Center. Registration is

not required to attend. September class dates are the 10th, 17th, and 24th. This year the sessions will use Echoes of Faith, a pro-gram consisting of modules. Classes will begin with the Theology module covering the Four Pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Sacred Scripture. Watch for more details next week.

¿Qué es? Este programa de formación (ofrecido en español) es para preparar a personas para desempeñar funciones ministeria-les en sus parroquias. Proporciona una educación general en: Formación Espiritual, Escritura, Fundamentos de Teología, Litur-gia y Sacramentos, La Moral Cristiana y Metodología.

¿Por qué debo participar? El programa ofrece oportunidades para el desarrollo espiritual de cada persona. Al mismo tiempo da los conocimientos y habilidades para varios ministerios pastorales.

The Office of Hispanic Ministry Ministerial Formation Level I

What is it? This training program (offered in Spanish) is to prepare people for ministerial roles in their parish-es. It provides a general education in Spiritual For-mation, Scripture, Foundations of theology, Liturgy and Sacraments, Christian morality and methodology.

Why should I participate? The program offers oppor-tunities for the spiritual development of each person. At the same time, it imparts the knowledge and skills for several ministries.

The program begins Saturday, 9 September, from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM here in the parish of St. Cyril. For more infor-mation contact Sr. Gladys in the Office of Hispanic Ministry: 838-2540 or gechenique@diocesetucson.org.

Ministerial Formation Level II Persons who have completed the certification of Ministerial Formation Level I will receive a call from the Office of Hispanic Ministry with an invitation to register for the classes in this second level of Ministerial Formation.
