MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the Brazilian Chemical Society, it is a great pleasure to invite you to attend the 46th World Chemistry Congress (IUPAC-2017) to be held in São Paulo – Brazil, from July 9-14, 2017. Brazilian Chemical Society (Sociedade Brasileira de Química, SBQ) is the IUPAC National Adhering Organization (NAO) of Brazil and one of the most representative and important scientific associations in Latin America, with over 4,500 members in Brazil and abroad.

The World Congress will be held in São Paulo, one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the world that now receives over 90,000 events a year. This multicultural city is not limited to a diverse population: it boasts first-world infrastructure, world-class hotels, excellent gastronomy, world-class museums and plenty of culture, music, shows and attractions for every cultural background, age, taste and budget. The venue will be the WTC Sheraton, which is surrounded by a variety of hotels and restaurants in walking distances. There are also options by public transportation to connect to other areas of the city.

For the first time in South America, we can bring an entire continent of chemists closer to the global IUPAC community. We will deliver an unforgettable IUPAC Congress, energized by the passion, hospitality and creativity of the Brazilian people.

MOTIVATION

SBQ - Brazilian Chemical Society (Sociedade Brasileira de Química, SBQ), one of the most representative and important scientific associations in Latin America. With more than 4,500 members in Brazil and abroad, it is honored to present the World Chemistry Congress (IUPAC-2017). This is the first time that this 100-year-old event will take place in South America, i.e. this will be a unique, unprecedented business opportunity. Traditionally, this event has had representatives from dozens of countries, from all continents.

SBQ has come to play a liaison role with the authorities that drive scientific and technical development policies in Brazil, with the aim of promoting the common good. One of the examples of SBQ's involvement was its participation in PADCT, both critical and positive, overcoming old anachronistic barriers among university professors, professionals working for business companies, civil servants, chemists and chemical engineers. This program contributed to foster the growth of Chemical Sciences in Brazil, in all of its aspects and operating modes.

Over the last three decades, SBQ has been growing continuously. It has been drawing and bringing on people with different interests and profiles, always aiming at what is best for the country. It also promotes scientific quality and high-level human resources capacity building in education, research and professional practice, in Chemistry and related areas. Its well-attended annual meetings, as well as regional and topic-specific gatherings, enjoy a large and diversified portfolio of publications.

SBQ sponsors the Annual Chemistry Meeting, on its way to the 39th edition, gathering more than 3 thousand people and attesting to this organization's importance in the industry. SBQ is now ready to celebrate its fortieth anniversary by hosting the 46th World Chemistry Conference (IUPAC - 2017)
