This year the Gospel Music Association is celebrating its golden anniversary—50 years of unifying the music community that changes lives. We’re thrilled you have joined us for this historic event.

Tonight the Dove Awards stage is set for Christian and Gospel artists and industry to come together for an extraordinary night of celebration! It’s the annual “family reunion” of trailblazers, musical innovators and visionaries who have dedicated their talent to throwing a lifeline to the

world. These songwriters, publishers, performers and producers have purposed to go beyond entertainment in order to encourage, inspire and spread hope through the truth of the gospel.

The artists who take the stage this evening represent a vast and diverse array of music ministries who are faithfully serving in churches, camps, conferences, military bases and street corners. We salute them all and trust that the atmosphere created this evening will be one that makes us all feel connected, not by style or instrumentation, but by the Spirit of God Who binds us together.

We congratulate all of our nominees and are delighted to bring so many together for Christian/Gospel music’s biggest night. We thank the many people who have joined together to make tonight an evening to remember.

Tennessee is honored, once again, to host one of gospel music’s premier events. Christian and Gospel music has a long and storied tradition in our state. Many of tonight’s nominees call the Volunteer State their home and much of the music being recognized was made here as well.

The Dove Awards highlight the impact of Christian & Gospel music, recog-nizing the work and talent of outstanding artists. Inaugurated in 1969, and first televised in 1984, this event allows millions of Americans to join in the celebra-tion of their remarkable achievements. I am extremely thankful for the numer-ous contributions that these artists have made to our great state.

“Fix My Eyes” has made its home in the Top 5 of iTunes Christian/Gospel singles since its May 1st release. It empowers listeners to honor God, live life, be bold, have compassion and to live by faith.

At a very tough time, for KING & COUNTRY was forced to ask some very hard questions. Who are they: as men, as musicians? What are the things they stand for? The answer came in these lyrics: “Love like we’re not scared. Give when it’s not fair. Live life for another. Take time for a brother. Fight for the weak ones. Speak out for freedom. Find faith in the battle. Stand tall, but above it all…”

On an album filled with the stories of others, Matthew West penned this song inspired by a young man named Jordan who used to introduce himself as a drug addict. West says, “it was during [Jordan’s] time in Teen Challenge that he began to realize that God wasn’t

The collective values and priorities which rose to the top of this discussion made their way into songs like “Fix My Eyes.” Their battle became beautiful and is now embodied in the lyrics of this song.

The music video, produced by Scott Godsey, tells the testimony of Jim Huston, a fan from Columbus, Indiana whose story was selected for the video. Huston survived a life-threatening motorcycle accident and also took part in the video itself.

“Hurricane” debuted at #1 on the Top Christian Albums chart and #17 on the Billboard 200 but vocal powerhouse, Natalie Grant didn’t just set out to write hits; she chose to be honest.

Speaking of her inspiration for the song, she says, “People think sometimes every life situation resolves itself easily and we come out happy with a little bow on it…. We always want the storm to stop, but instead [Jesus] says that He’ll come to us in the middle of it. That im-agery inspired the song.”

Made instantly recognizable by Whitney Houston’s performance on The Preacher’s Wife soundtrack, this song of worship, originally com-posed by gospel great, Richard Smallwood in the 1970’s, has a rich musical legacy that is added to beautifully with this powerfully deliv-ered performance from Natalie Grant.

Sung with just a piano accompaniment, Grant starts out tenderly be-fore displaying the vocal power that has made her a longtime CCM favorite.

Grant had the honor of performing this song live at the 50th an-niversary celebration of the 1963 March on Washington at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.

Derek Minor, formerly known as “PRo,” released his much-anticipated album, Minorville, in September 2013 through his new label, Reflection Music Group (RGM), co-founded with Doc Watson.

Minorville is not just good music, but it is influ-ential music. Songs such as “IGWT” and “Dear Mr. Christian” address very real issues confronting peo-

ple today and do so in a way that only Minor can. Throughout the album, Minor spits meaty lyrics

like this one from Gimme: “I feel like we must’ve missed it. We built a whole society around riches. While kids in Africa put water on their wish list – we go out and buy a couple of Benzes.”

Musically and lyrically, Minorville is major!

PASSION: TAKE IT ALL by Passion | Producers: Nathan Nockels

Passion is an annual conference hosted by Louie and Shelley Giglio in Atlanta, Georgia that employs live worship and teachings to point tens of thousands of young people in the right direct: to God.

Since 1998, Passion worship has been docu-mented through their live worship recordings to the enjoyment of conference attendees and many others who are not able to make it. The recurrent worship leaders have included the David Crowder Band, Charlie Hall, Christy Nockels, Matt Redman, Kristian Stanfill and Chris Tomlin.

Passion: Take It All was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia as well as Houston, Texas. Over 1.3 mil-lion units of Passion albums have been sold over the years.

Last month, the “Passion: Take It All” tour kicked off in Seattle and will hit 26 cities along with Stanfill. Passion: Take It All debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200, the highest debut for a wor-ship album so far this year.

INVADER by Rapture Ruckus | Producers: Brad Dring, Geoff Duncan, Steve Aeillo

Rapture Ruckus, a Christian hip hop group hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, is back after three years and does not disappoint! Their latest project, Invader, Volume 1, is what loyal fans have come to expect and their unique sound is attracting new listeners. The three-year recording hiatus provided

a wonderful opportunity for the group’s sound and style to mature as well as produce a fun combina-tion of hip hop and dance music.

Invader, Volume 1 features a great mixture of “rock and hop” while addressing serious issues of our day.

HOME by Kim Walker-Smith & Skyler Smith | Producers: Jason Borneman, Jeremy Edwardson

Kim-Walker Smith and husband, Skyler Smith, have contributed to several chart-topping hits produced through Bethel Church’s Jesus Culture group as well as through Kim’s solo projects. However, Home is unlike anything either of them have ever done before.

The folksy, grassroots sound of Home reveals a wonderful new musical layer of “The Smiths” in

its 10 tracks for happy listeners everywhere. This project features duets as well as solos, all recorded in the studio which is a creative departure from the live Jesus Culture projects.

Home landed #2 on the Top Christian Albums and placed well on the Top Independent Albums, Top Digital Albums, and Billboard 200 charts!

KINGDOM COME by Bryan & Katie Torwalt | Producer: Jeremy Edwardson

Kingdom Come is the second full-length album from married couple, Bryan and Katie Torwalt, perhaps best known for their involvement in Jesus Culture. Bringing that same intense passion for God, King-dom Come provides 11 tracks of heartfelt worship.

Following on the heels of their first project on the

Jesus Culture label, Here on Earth, The Torwalts continue to establish themselves as a part of the worship collective serving a thirsty generation.

Kingdom Come tied for #3 on the Top Christian Albums charts for 2013 and 2014 as well as #5 on the Top Independent Albums chart and others.

GOD’S NOT DEADDirector, Harold Cronk | Pure Flix Entertainment

“How far would you go…to defend your belief in God?” This seminal question defines the film, God’s Not Dead. The cast of talented actors includes Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Shane Harper (Good Luck Charlie), Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman), and David A.R. White (Jerusalem Count-down) as well as cameos by mainstay Christian band, Newsboys, and Willie and Korie Robertson of Duck Dynasty.

On the first day of his philosophy class, Josh Wheaton (Harper) discovers that the arrogant Professor Radisson (Sorbo) ex-pects all of his students to disavow God or fail. Standing up for his faith, the stu-dent accepts the challenge to prove to the entire class that God is, in fact, not dead. Faith is put to the test as Josh sets out to honor God and therein lies the beauty of this powerful apologetic.

The entertainment industry was sur-prised to see the film gross $9.2 million in its opening weekend. To date, it has earned more than $60 million.

GRACE UNPLUGGEDDirector, Brad J. Silverman | Roadside Attractions, Coram Deo Studios

Grace Unplugged is based on the re-al-life story of producer Russ Rice’s daughter. The movie tells the tale of a curious 18-year-old, Grace Trey, who longs to follow in her father’s footsteps as a former pop star. Eager to see what the world has to offer, Grace heads off to Los Angeles where she finds out that what she’s always wanted—and is now achieving—may not be all she thought it was cracked up to be.

As her star rises in the Hollywood skies, so does the pressure to com-

promise her morals and her godly up-bringing. Grace’s downward spiral turns around as she meets, Quentin, a young intern who invites her to his home for dinner. His Christian sensibilities and his family’s charm remind her of home and soon she returns home and eventually reunites with her family and her faith.

HEAVEN IS FOR REALDirector, Randall Wallace | Screen Gems

Adapted from the #1 New York Times best-selling book, Heaven Is For Real tells the very real story of a “small-town father” who is astonished and challenged by his son’s near-death experience–and consequent visions of Heaven. Exhibiting knowledge beyond his young years and armed with the simple innocence we are all commanded to adopt, little Colton Bur-po inspires his father, Todd, his family, and his community to newfound faith.

With Bishop T.D. Jakes as a co-pro-ducer and songbird Darlene Zschech on the soundtrack singing “Heaven in Me,” Heaven Is For Real was a box office success grossing more than $22 million in its opening weekend.

SON OF GODDirector, Christopher Spencer | Mark Burnett, Roma Downey

Following the award-winning miniseries, The Bible, which aired on the History Chan-nel last spring, husband and wife team, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey (who portrays Mary, the Mother of God), adapted sections of the series into this full-length film which focuses on the life of Jesus.

Starring the praised Portuguese actor, Diogo Morgado, as the Christ and mas-

terfully scored by Hans Zimmer, Son of God stands poised to become this gener-ation’s re-telling of the greatest story ever told. It has already captured the hearts of unbelievers and Christians alike.

Son of God grossed more than $26 million in its opening weekend, and has grossed more than $65 million to date. In 2014, said by many to be “Hollywood’s Year of the Bible,” Son of God makes a wonderful addition to a trend that many hope continues.

WHEN CALLS THE HEARTDirectors, Michael Landon Jr. and Brian Bird | Believe Pictures

Inspired by Janette Oke’s bestselling book series, Canadian West, When Calls the Heart is an endearing tele-series, perfect for family viewing.

In Coal Valley, a small, simple coal mining town, Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow) is the new school mistress. She interacts with townswomen such as Abigail Stanton, played by Lori Loughlin, who have been recently widowed due to a community-shattering explosion in one of the mines. Yet these same mines must provide these women with the live-lihood necessary to live and provide for themselves as well as their families.

Meanwhile, the young Constable Jack Thorton (Daniel Lissing) seems to be the only one in town who refuses to warm to the young Miss Thatcher, con-vinced that her father, a man of wealth and influence, has intentionally assigned him to Coal Valley simply for the sake of protecting his daughter but over time his feelings toward her change.

The show’s first season aired on the Hallmark Network. Season 2 of When Calls the Heart has been approved and is expected to air Spring 2015.

2014 Recipient: Sirius XMPast winners include Alan Jackson, Mel Gibson & The Passion of the Christ, Walmart, Time Life “Songs for Worship,” and Whitney Houston.

GRADY NUTT HUMOR AWARD Presented in honor of Grady Nutt, who starred on TV’s “Hee Haw” for many years and was a beloved friend of Christian music. After he was killed in a tragic plane crash in 1982, the Grady Nutt Humor Award was created in his honor.

ABOUT GMA


1964 - The Gospel Music Association was founded to serve as the face and voice for the Christian/Gospel music community. Founding fathers James Blackwood, J. D. Sumner, Cecil Blackwood, Don Light and Don Butler elected Tennessee Ernie Ford as the first President.

1968 - At a GMA board meeting, Bill Gaither presented an idea about hosting an annual awards ceremony. The name “Dove” was Mr. Gaither’s idea and the design idea for the statue came from Les Beasley.

1969 - The first Dove Awards ceremony was held in Memphis, Tennessee on October 10 at the Peabody Hotel. There were 11 categories honoring the best and brightest in Christian music.

1975 - The first award was presented for an Album by a Secular Artist. Charley Pride’s “Sunday Morning with Charley Pride” won. The category was retired in 1986.

1977 – The new Soul/Black Gospel Album was created and honored for three years. Andrae Crouch won the first two and Walter Hawkins and the Love Center Choir won the last.

1983 - After a three year run, the Inspirational Black Gospel Album of the Year category was retired. Shirley Caesar, Edwin Hawkins and Larnelle Harris are the only three people to have ever received the prestigious award.

1988 - Three new categories were added to the Dove Awards - New Artist of the Year, which went to BeBe & CeCe Winans, Rock Album of the Year and Country Album of The Year.

1991 - The first Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year and Recorded Song of the Year were awarded. DC Talk took home the award for best album for “Nu Thang” and The Winans’ “It’s Time” was the best song winner.

2003 - The Gospel Music Association took over Music in the Rockies. In 2009, the name was changed to IMMERSE and the event was moved to Nashville.

2004 - The first Rock/Contemporary Album and Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year awards were given out. Switchfoot took home both for “The Beautiful Letdown” and “Meant to Live.”

2011 - The Dove Awards moved the ceremony to Atlanta.

1971 - The first two inductions to the Gospel Music Hall of Fame: “Pappy” Jim Waites and G. T. “Dad” Speer.

1976 - The first Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year went to the Imperials for “No Shortage.” The Bill Gaither Trio took home the first award for Inspirational Album of the Year for “Jesus, We Just Want To Thank You.” The Speer Family’s “Between the Cross and Heaven” was the first Southern Gospel Album of the Year winner.

1978 - The DJ of the Year category was retired after nine years. Sid Hughes won this award more than any other DJ with four wins.

1984 - The Doves were the first gospel music awards ceremony to ever be televised. The Christian Broadcasting Network aired the show, which was hosted by Glen Campbell.

1989 – The Hard Music category started a 14-year run with awards going to both the Album and the Recorded Song of the Year. Stryper won both categories with “In God We Trust” in 1989.

1995 - The GMA launched the GMA Academy to encourage and train musicians interested in careers in Christian music and music ministry.

1998 - Bluegrass made its debut at the GMA Dove Awards. The Isaacs took home the first Bluegrass Album of the Year for “Bridges” while Fernando Ortega and Alison Krauss swept the Bluegrass Song of the Year category, winning with their tune, “Children of the Living God.”

2005 - The GMA created Project Restore in coordination with World Vision in order to help those affected by the 2004 tsunami that left 150,000 dead or missing and millions from 11 countries homeless.

2010 - The GMA partnered with the Gospel Music Workshop of America and The Stellar Awards to sponsor National Gospel Music Heritage Month.

2013 - The GMA Dove Awards returned to Nashville and was moved to the fall.

2014 - Rich Mullins, the writer of “Awesome God,” Brown Bannister, Gaither Vocal Band and Take 6 were all inducted into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame at their inaugural GMA Honors Ceremony, held on April 29. The first ever Honors recipients were Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones, international praise and worship leader Don Moen, tour pastor Michael Guido and world-renowned non-profit organizations Show Hope and World Vision.

In 1990, Steven Curtis Chap-man won the Male Vocalist of the Year and Sandi Patti won Female Vocalist of the Year.

Larnelle Harris is a 3-time “Male Vocalist of the Year” winner.

Bill Gaither won the very first “Songwriter

of the Year” Award.

James Blackwood of The Blackwood Brothers won Male Vocalist of the Year every year from 1969-1975
