NEWH and Jamie Oliver, oneof the UK’s most successfuland influential chefs, sharea common ethos in theirrespective desires to “givesomething back” to thehospitality community. NEWH,now in its 20th year of existence, has always placed utmost importanceon educational support for young peopleinterested in a career in hospitality.Jamie Oliver, through his new charityCheeky Chops, has taken this a stepfur ther by providing oppor tunities fordisadvantage, unemployed young people, between the ages of 16-24, to help themreach their full potential and developcareers within the catering/food serviceindustry.

NEWH and Cheeky Chops have recognizedthis common interest and identified animmediate opportunity to establish theNEWH Scholarship Fund to benefit studentsin need while par ticipating in Jamie’sintensive training program. Lindsay Sharmanwas selected last March for the 18 month programand will complete her training in August of this year.Lindsay is 20 years old and has a son, Shaye, age 5.She has struggled to look after Shaye and carry out herworkload in the training course without compromise toeither concern.

Tony Elvin, Training and Development Manager for CheekyChops, has identified a childcare program for theduration of Lindsay’s training course that will enable herto focus on the training while knowing that Shaye isbeing properly looked after. NEWH/United Kingdom haspledged to underwrite the cost of this childcare as thefirst scholarship contribution to Cheeky Chops. Moreimportantly, NEWH will review the criteria for futurescholarships with Cheeky Chops and funds will becontributed as NEWH policy states. Cheeky Chopsintrinsically offers a range of support to the traineesincluding professional counsell ing , help withaccommodation and advice regarding finances orpastoral care. The cost to train each student in the 18

month program is close to £ 20,000!

NEWH/United Kingdom iscurrently organizing a

fundraising event to be heldin November at Jamie’s

restaurant in London called“Fifteen” – named for the original

15 students that launched the “on thejob” training program in a televisionshow in the UK called “Jamie’sKitchen.” Proceeds from the

evening’s event will be contributedfrom the NEWH Scholarship Fund toother students’ needs and/or support.NEWH is very proud to support LindsaySharman this year and look forward toa long term relationship with CheekyChops, both in the UK and other partsof the world.
