Analyze Learners

General Characteristics: - Grade 2- Ages 6-8- Ethnicities consist of: Chamorro, Filipino, and Caucasian - 12 males, 8 females- No mental, physical, emotional or social problems - All from middle class socioeconomic backgrounds

Specific Entry Competencies:The second graders have already received instruction and experience in:- Basic addition skills- Basic Subtraction skills- Two types of bar graphs (bar & pie)- Analyzing bar and pie graphs- Presenting project orally

Learning Styles:- Lecturing- Auditory -Visual-Grouping

State Objectives

1. Using a survey prepared by the teacher, students will be able to gather data of the different modes of transportation (car, bus, bicycle, walking, or other) their classmates and other second grade classes use to get to school.

2. The students will draw a bar graph depicting the results of their class and other classes using graph paper and pencils.

Page 2: 451 Lesson Plan 1

3. Using the computer, students will transfer their data to a MS Office Excel spreadsheet.

4. The students will be able to compare the results of their class with those of another second grade class.

Select Instructional Methods, Media, and Materials

Instructional Methods:- Lecture- Display large, colorful sample graphs- Select groups

Media:- Large, colorful poster boards

(example graphs)- MS Office Excel spreadsheets

Materials:- Poster boards with examples of graphs- Survey asking which modes of transportation children use to get to school- Graph paper &pencils- Computers with MS Office excel Spreadsheets - Printer- Projector- Teacher’s laptop

Utilize Media and Materials

Preview Materials:- The Teacher will use examples of bar graphs and pie charts to show the students.- The teacher will approve the students’ bar graph drafts drawn on graphing paper

before allowing them to use MS Office Excel.- The teacher will verify the amount of students in the other participating classes

and make copies of the survey.- The teacher will ensure the computers and projector are in good working

condition.

Prepare Materials:- The Teacher will display the poster board examples of bar graphs and pie charts

on the classroom walls where the students can see it.

Page 3: 451 Lesson Plan 1

- The teacher will provide the students with a survey about the types of transportation used by their classmates and other second grade classes. (See attached)

- The teacher will ensure that the computers, printer, and projector are in working condition before allowing the students to use it.

Prepare the Environment:- The desks will be arranged so that the students can work in their respective

groups. - The example posters of bar graphs and pie charts will be taped on the walls. - The teacher will collaborate with the other classes so the groups will be able to

survey the other students at a given time. - The Technology Center with the two computers and a printer is already set in the

back of the classroom. - There will be a place in the center of the room for the cart holding the laptop and

projector during the students’ oral presentations.

Prepare Learners:- Three days prior to the execution of the activity, the teacher will review the types

of graphs and the process of analyzing them using the assigned textbook. - Two days prior to the activity, the teacher will demonstrate inserting charts into

MS Office Excel spreadsheets as a review for the students. o If no prior experience in MS Office Excel Spreadsheets read the following:

Step 1 - Launch Excel - If Excel is already open on your workstation open a new Excel workbook, There are two ways to do that.

1. Go to the File menu. Select New. 2. Use a keyboard combination: on a Macintosh use Command + N and on a Windows computer use Ctrl + N

Step 2 - Enter the data to be graphed. For the purpose of this lesson you will use data from the “How do you get to school?” Survey. Enter it as you see below:

Page 4: 451 Lesson Plan 1

Step 3 - Highlight data to be graphed. Do not include the row with heading titles, only the names of Transportation and the numbers. If your worksheet looks like the one above; put your cursor in cell A2, click hold the mouse button down and drag to cell B5. Highlighted data should look like the image below:

Step 4 - Select the Chart Wizard. That is done by going to the Insert menu and selecting Chart.

Step 5 - From the Chart Wizard box that opens select Chart type. For this activity, I selected bar graph.

Page 5: 451 Lesson Plan 1

After you have selected the chart type click OK and Chart Wizard puts your completed chart on the spreadsheet. You can see the finished product below.

Step 6- You can now

customize your bar graph by right clicking on the graph and clicking Select Data.

Page 6: 451 Lesson Plan 1

Step 7- Verify the range of data being used for this chart. The Data range displayed below is read “all cells from A2 to B5.” If the data range should be changed, click on the box/icon next to the data range.

The dialog box shrinks allowing you to see your entire spreadsheet. You can edit the data range in this small window. When you are finished, click the same box at the end to restore the window.

Page 7: 451 Lesson Plan 1

Step 8- This box allows you to add a title to the chart, make changes on the legend, or make changes on the data labels.

Step 9- Highlight Series 1. Click on the Edit box to change the name of the legend.

Page 8: 451 Lesson Plan 1

Step 10- The edit series window will appear, type in a name for the graph, under Series Name, click OK.

This will bring you back to the Select Data Source dialog box, click OK again. Your chart should look something like the one blow.

- One day prior to the activity, students will be given time to practice using the computers.

Page 9: 451 Lesson Plan 1

- The teacher will select groups for students. - The teacher will tell the students a brief description of the activity.

Provide the Learning Experience:- The teacher will tell the students the objectives of the activity and will go over

each step thoroughly. The teacher may show the posters on the wall as examples of graphs.

Require Learner Participation

Procedure:1. The teacher will divide the students into 4 groups of with 5 students.2. Assign each group the class they will be surveying. 3. Provide each group surveys that would equal the amount of students they would

be polling. (See attached survey).4. The teacher will assign roles to each student in the group.

a. Who will be assigned to survey the students? b. Who will be assigned to draw the graphs? c. Who will transfer their data onto MS Office Excel? d. How will they go about with their oral presentations? What will they say?

5. Have the Teacher’s aide accompany a group one at a time to their assigned classroom.

6. While one group is out the other students should be at their desk working on the given handout. (Favorite Drinks) print worksheet from the link provided below:http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/mathskills/bargraphs1.htm

7. When students return, instruct them to begin counting their results and making their rough drafts using the graph paper and colored pencils. Remind them to take note of their actual numbers on the graph paper.

8. Collect their rough drafts and surveys and review them. If students do not finish before the period ends, assign it as homework. Review their work next day.

9. Allow the groups to correct their mistakes before using the computers. Only allow groups whose rough drafts are correct to use the computers in the Technology Center.

10. Each group will alternate using the computers in the Technology Center for 15-20 minutes. Remind them to be as creative as they wish and to name and save their file on the computer desktops.

11. Save each group’s file onto the teacher’s thumb drive.12. For the next class period, print each group’s graphs and make enough copies for

the class.13. Set up the laptop and projector in the center of the room. Use the teacher’s thumb

drive to open the students’ files.14. Students will present and explain their graphs to the class.

Page 10: 451 Lesson Plan 1

15. Discuss with the students similarities and differences of the kinds of transportation used by their classmates and other classes.

Evaluate and Revise

Assessment of learner achievementObjective 1: Using a survey prepared by the teacher, the second grade students will be able to gather data of the different modes of transportation (car, bus, bicycle, walking, or other) their classmates and other second grade classes use to get to school.Evaluation 1: The students were able to gather necessary data from their classmates and other students. Students turned in the answered survey forms.Note: Teacher evaluation of this objective will be based on the students’ ability to correctly answer surveys from the other classes.

Objective 2: The students will draw a bar graph depicting the results of their class and other classes using graph paper and pencils.Evaluation 2: The students were able to draw a bar graph of their results. Note: Teacher evaluation will be based on the accuracy of the hand-drawn bar graphs.

Objective 3: Using the computer, students will transfer their data to MS Office Excel spreadsheet.Evaluation 3: Students competently and correctly inserted their graphs into MS Office Excel spreadsheets.Note: Teacher evaluation will be based on the students’ ability to accurately transfer their hand-drawn bar graphs onto MS Office Excel. Creativity of their work may also be taken into consideration.

Objective 4: The students will be able to compare the results of their class with those of another second grade classes.Evaluation 4: With minimal coaching, students were able to determine through the graphs that a majority of their classmates used the bus to school with riding a car close in second place. The results were similar in the other second grade classes. The discussion of the graphs similarities and differences was energetic and enthusiastic.Note: Teacher evaluation will be based on students’ responses to the teacher’s questions during the presentations. Evaluation will also be based on observed participation of the whole class.

Evaluation of media Students constantly looked at the example poster boards of the bar graphs and pie charts while drawing their drafts on graph paper. Students enjoyed using the computers and MS Office Excel to make their spreadsheets.

Notes:

Page 11: 451 Lesson Plan 1

Evaluation of methodsLecturing to explain the activity and showing the students the examples of are appropriate for the activity.

Notes:

Evaluation of instruction/instructorThe activity was both educational and enjoyable for the students. Students applied math skills into the activity and were able to more than adequately compare and contrast graphs. At the same time, they were able to have an outlet for creativity while making their graphs. Because they were with their peers, they were also able to socialize and contribute ideas with each other. The instructor should continually supervise students, seeing as they are young and have the tendency to get distracted or argue.

Notes:

Revise When students are using the computers in the Technology Center, the teacher should always supervise them to ensure they are focused on their task.
