Breaking Open The Word April 16, 2017
Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord
First Reading: Acts 10:34a, 37-43 In this passage, Peter testifies that he and his followers saw the miracles performed by Christ, witnessed His death, and believe in His resurrection. Now they will proclaim to all that Christ is the Son of God. Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-4 Paul tells the Colossians that they will appear with Christ in glory. They should be mindful of things above rather than things on earth. Gospel: John 20:1-9 In vivid detail, John tells us that when Mary Magdalene visited Christ’s tomb, the tomb was empty. She told the apostles; they ran to the tomb, and saw the “wrappings” on the ground. The disciple who entered first “saw and believed.” Consider/Reflect In the reading from Acts, Peter proclaims that the disciples are to be witnesses. They were “chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with (Jesus) after he rose from the dead”(Acts 10:41). We are also called to witness our faith in Jesus Christ. Our words, deeds, and attitudes of sincerity and truth make Christ’s presence known in our world today. Pope Francis said to those gathered at World Youth Day in 2013 that imposing beliefs isn’t truly discussing God, but sharing the joy of faith is. When we speak and declare what we have seen, heard, known, and experienced of Jesus Christ, we share the joy of faith and the power of His life, death, and resurrection. Speak! Declare! Witness the power of the gospel! How do you witness your faith in Jesus Christ in ordinary ways?

THE LAITY IN THE CHURCH An eight part series of articles on the role of the Laity in the Church today
8 – Participating in the Life of the Church
Each of us must “always be fully aware of being a ‘member of the Church’ yet entrusted with a unique task which cannot be done by another and which is to be fulfilled for the good of all.” Pope John Paul II
Christifideles laici, 28. Individual Participation. All of us are called to individually participate in the work of the Church by living a truly Christian life. We are each called to spread the Gospel through both word and deed to friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and even the strangers we meet in our daily lives. This form of participation can contribute greatly to a more extensive spreading of the Gospel. Indeed it can reach as many places as there are daily lives of individual members of the lay faithful.
Group Forms of Participation. Throughout the Church’s history, there have always been various groups of lay faithful active in the life and mission of the Church. However, since Vatican II, there has been a new vitality in the development of various lay associations, groups, communities, and movements in the Church. These lay movements have arisen to meet the specific needs of the laity – the need for a deeper spirituality… and the need of the laity to give greater evidence of their own desire for evangelizing the word – the world of economics, the world of politics, the world of university, and the world of unions. The new lay movements illustrate the desire of the laity for a greater commitment to the discipleship of Jesus in the world and in the Church. Involvement in these groups can promote a closer unity of our day-to-day life with our faith, as well as numerous opportunities for fellowship, ongoing faith enrichment, and specific apostolic works. “The most significant positive development since the Second Vatican Council has been the flourishing of lay movements within the Church”
Cardinal James Francis Stafford, President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity
The Pilot, August 8, 2003

The Casey Coyle Memorial Fund was
started in response to the last wishes of Casey Coyle.
Casey spent a great deal of her life hospitalized at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia fighting Cystic Fibrosis. Casey understood not only the emotional but also the financial burdens on families with children in the hospital. She wanted to set up a fund to help with the small expenses that are beyond the budget: gas to and from the hospital, meals, a room for parents, etc. and simple things like movies, video games and other diversions that can help to pass the time more quickly.
Casey Coyle was a lifelong parishioner of St. Theresa’s and the daughter of
Tim & Kim Coyle.

SYRINGOMYELIA & CHIARI AWARENESS Syringomyelia is a chronic spinal disorder in which the spinal fluid enters the spinal cord and forms a cavity known as a syrinx. Over time, the syrinx may swell, causing permanent damage, which can lead to paralysis. Chiari is the primary cause of approximately 70% of syringomyelia cases. Chiari malformation is a congenital anomaly in which the brain protrudes through the opening at the base of the skull. Results cause extreme pain, loss of coordination, difficulty swallowing, and other neurological symptoms.
