9:00am-12:00pm Determining Program Impact and Effectiveness: An In-depth Journey into
Data Collection, Data Storytelling, Evaluation, and Impact Have you ever designed, implemented or directed a program and wondered it had
IMPACT? Do you ever wonder if the services you are offering students are actually
helping them to be more successful? Our pre-conference session will focus on strategies
and processes that help us to objectively look at our programs to see what stories the
data is telling us about our ability to truly IMPACT student success at our colleges and
in our programs. Presenter: Diva Ward *Director of Student Support, Canada College*
Location: Kona
The Work and Workings of Successful Writing Centers Writing centers have evolved over the years. Initiative after initiative has caused us to
rethink what we do and how we do it. This pre-conference will walk you through one
writing center’s evolution into two writing centers with multiple services within them.
Specifically, online tutoring, dual enrollment, English placement tests, workshops, a
supplemental instruction hybrid, and the Brain Food Project will be discussed. Our goal
is to help attendees develop their own inquiry and data collection based on the needs
(and confines) of their own institution. Presenters: Jennifer Dorian * Writing Center Coordinator, Fresno City College*
Tabitha Villalba * P.A.S.S. Coordinator, Fresno City College*

Learning Assistance is Backwards Designed: Adapting Innovative Training
Practices to Empower Student Learners and Leaders
The Skyline College Learning Commons, comprising of the Learning Center and
Library, houses individual peer and embedded tutoring, Supplemental Instruction,
and Peer Mentoring. This pre-conference session will address how these programs
have changed and grew throughout…..utilized backwards design to address shared
goals of empowering students, building resiliency, promoting ownership of learning,
and addressing the whole student - not just for the students that utilize these services,
but also for the students that provide them. In this session, participants will:
● Review case studies of these academic support programs and how they deliver
their services
● Learn about the unique and overlapping elements of their trainings
● Have an opportunity to reflect on their own programs and practices and how

Tutor Training Strategies Toolkit: Infusing the Socratic Tutorial Process into a
Collaborative Learning Center
The Socratic Tutorial Process has enhanced the way tutors in the CLC at La Sierra
University empower student in taking ownership of their learning. This researched based
approach to serving the whole student equips tutors with the strategies and skills necessary
to move student from seeking the, “answer to #14” to learning how to uncover new
knowledge through the inquiry process. It is a literal passing of the pen from tutor to
student and makes training tutors and the tutorial experience highly engaging and
impactful. Presenters: Jessica Chung Location: Coast

Mindful or Mind Full? The Role of Mindfulness in Student Success and What
We Can Do To Help
As Academic Support professionals, we are tasked with addressing a wide range of issues
when it comes to student support: time management, content retention, test taking
strategies, and much more. What we don’t often talk about, though, is the role of
mindfulness when it comes to student success. Yet countless research studies have shown
the power of mindfulness and metacognitive awareness as tools to help students succeed
in high-stress academic environments. In this workshop, I will outline highlights from this
research and share the multifaceted approach our Academic Resource Center has taken in
helping our students incorporate mindfulness as a way to improve concentration and focus
as well as reduce stress and anxiety.

3:10pm-4:10pm Leveraging Faculty Liaisons and Other Tools for SI Expansion
The Student Center for Academic Achievement's (SCAA) Supplemental Instruction (SI)
Program at CSU East Bay began with just 4 SI Leaders in 2015 and a lot of pushback. In
this session, we describe how we navigated the constraints and expanded to 38 sessions in
less than 2 years. Workshop participants will learn about how we leveraged Faculty
Liaisons for training, outreach, program planning, and observation as well as other tools to
expand our program with just 1 SI Coordinator!

The UHD Peer Tutor Project: An Exploration of Peer Tutor Development
with Adult Learners in Algebra, Calculus, and Statistics Topics
Tutor andragogic content knowledge changes with the help of training partnerships with
mathematics faculty and staff. The differences in knowledge can be measured with a
hierarchal cluster analysis of the repertory grid by analyzing relationships between
constructs and elements. Tutor hypothetical learning trajectories change depending on
student representations of what they do and do not know about concepts.
The study encourages tutors to use knowledge of students’ representation about a concept
to determine what to tutor next within the concept and with assistance of faculty and staff,
how that portion of the concept should be taught.
Tutors should use different types of representations including formal, imagistic, and action
representations in tutoring mathematical ideas. This will promote student development in
reasoning, proof, communication, problem solving, and connection.
Presenters: Leslie Woodard Location: Bay Gabriela Ramirez
Aisha Farhadova
From Paper to Canvas: Coordinating a Supplemental
Instruction Program through a Learning Management System
Attendants will observe a live demonstration of how Skyline College’s SI program utilizes
Canvas LMS to support Skyline’s SI program and provide feedback to the SI Leaders.
Topics include how to efficiently track and review weekly SI paperwork, document
observations and feedback, and house accessible resources for the SI Leaders.

Online Writing and Math Support for IU East and IU Online Students:
Accomplishments and Challenges
Demand for online math and writing support grows as more students choose online
programs. At Indiana University East, asynchronous support is readily embraced by
students because it provides more flexibility for them and by tutors because it provides
time for research that is difficult with real time methods.

9:00am-10:00am Best Practices: PASS - Program Assisting Student Athlete Success
PASS prides itself on making sure student athletes have every chance of meeting their
educational goals. PASS has attempted to create a one-stop shop for our student athletes,
whereby they are able to have the majority of their academic needs met in one location,
LRC Tutoring. While student athletes are in attendance for their weekly study hall or
tutoring sessions, drop-in counseling and other on-campus resources are also made
available. Please come join our session to hear more about the best practices when
developing a tutoring program geared towards this special population.
Presenters: Dustin Bothwell Location: Kona
Building the Mission of Apportionment: Viewpoints and Approaches
The scaling of tutoring programs and approaches are rich opportunities for colleges to
reach a diversity of students with responsive and innovative approaches. These strategies
also need to be related to collaborative approaches across campus through Starfish and
other integrated ways of leveraging resources. How might these approaches be
apportionment generating, and how might colleges relate their programs and services for
student support to the Apportionment for Tutoring - Section 58170 in Title 5? The broad
question explored by this panel is how we continue to develop innovative and integrated
approaches in relation to “regulations” that govern apportionment. The panelists from
three different institutions at various stages of generating apportionment will share
approaches and strategies on their campus as case-studies. This will lead to rich and
fruitful discussions about apportionment, as evidenced by recent discussions on the
ACTLA listserv.
Presenter: Ted Blake Location: Coast
Flipping the Script: Using Backwards Design in Tutoring Sessions Traditional structures not working in your tutoring sessions? Perhaps you need to flip the
script and use a fresh approach. This workshop will show how you can use the principles
of backwards to design to give students a fresh perspective on how to create essays and
understand readings. Such backwards design can enhance tutorial sessions and show
students a different approach when they aren't be served by more traditional practices.

How to Use a "Strategic, Reflective, Mentoring Approach" to Foster and
Develop the 8 NACE Career-Readiness Competencies in Student Workers
(PART I)
This interactive presentation explores how a create a "strategic, reflective, mentoring" tool
similar to the ones currently used by the Northern Arizona University Supplemental
Instruction (SI) team to foster professional development and career readiness in student
workers. The SI team designed their Professional Development Reflection Tool and
Professional Development Tracking Tool around the National Association of Colleges and
Employers' (NACE) eight career-readiness competencies. During this session, the
presenter will walk participants through the process of creating a "strategic, reflective,
mentoring tool' that can be used to promote professional development in student workers-
and will explain how the use of the tool can be woven into training, supervision and
evaluation of student workers-all in an effort to help student workers be recognized as
"highly competitive candidates" when seeking employment and/or applying for graduate
school.
