My dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Welcome to the forty-fourth annual Columbus Day Mass. We are so glad you’re here!
How blessed it is today for us to join together once again is Saint Patrick’s Cathedral! We gather to celebrate the Eucharist in honor of the millions of Italian immigrant men, women and children, who came to America in search of the unique opportunities we share as a proud nation. They are models of faith and patriotism for us.
Today, with warm hearts and grateful sentiments, we remember and give thanks for the extraor-dinary courage of the ordinary people in possession of the vivid American dream. They bravely took a chance, left everything they had in Italy, and made a life for themselves, in this City of Im-migrants! And they were reassured again and again by the comforting presence of Jesus they felt within themselves and the dependable dynamic and welcoming Community that was, and still is, the Church. Bravi!
Let us use the pride in our cultural heritage and binding Faith, to reach out to give support to our neighbors, that is, anyone who is “near.” Many do not share our cultural heritage or religious tradi-tions ... but they are our “relatives,” in a real sense, because they are sons and daughters of the same Heavenly Father. Remember, it was for this common sense of justice and mercy that our forefathers came to America, and it is still what a self-sacrificing God expects! This is what we Christians do!
Please know how privileged I feel, standing with you at the altar of our Lord and Savior today! Sia lodato Gesu’ Cristo!
Saluting you and your loved ones, I am,
Faithfully in Christ,

11 ottobre 2021 Festa di Papa San Giovanni XXIII Mese del Santo Rosario Anno di San Giuseppe
Cari Fratelli e Sorelle in Cristo,
Salutando voi e i vostri cari, mi confermo,
Fedelmente in Cristo,
Timothy Michael Cardinal DolanArcivescovo di New York

FIRST READING PRIMA LETTURA JoAnne PollioA Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians. Colossians 3:12–17Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God the Father through him.The Word of the Lord.

ACCLAMATION BEFORE THE GOSPEL CANTO AL VANGELO Alleluia | Michele Bonfitto
GOSPEL VANGELO Deacon Antonio MammolitiA Reading from the Gospel According to Matthew. Matthew 28:16–20The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”The Gospel of the Lord.

GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF COMMUNION
FOR CATHOLICSAs Catholics, we fully participate in the
celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all.
FOR OUR FELLOW CHRISTIANSWe welcome our fellow Christians to this
celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ’s prayer for us “that they may all be one” (Jn 17:21).
Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign
of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 §4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 §3).
FOR THOSE NOT RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION
All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another.
FOR NON-CHRISTIANSWe also welcome to this celebration those
who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.
