4.4 Changing a Percent to a Fraction or a Decimal 1 Objective A. Writing Percents as fractions. A percent has an understood denominator of 100. When converting from a percent, get rid of the percent symbol (%). Since its meaning is to divide by 100, when converting to fractions, divide by 100 by placing a 100 in its denominator. Divide by 100 by using the shortcut of moving the decimal point two places to the left. If no decimal point appears, insert one to the right of the last digit; then move it two places to the left. Procedure: To convert a percent to a decimal Step 1:Rewrite without percent symbol. Move the decimal point two places to the left. Insert leading zeros if necessary. Example 4. Since = 0.75, 7%=7.75%. Then we can convert the percent to a decimal by moving the decimal point two places to the left and dropping the percent symbol. Example 5.
