Specific Latent Heat
The specific latent of fusion is the amount of heat required to change 1 kg of the substance from solid to liquid phase without a change in temperature.
The specific latent of vaporisation is the amount of heat required to change 1 kg of the substance from liquid to gaseous phase without a change in temperature.

How much heat must be removed from 0.75 kg of water at 0o C to make ice cubes at 0oC ?

= 0.75 x 3.36 x 105
= 2.52 x 105J

How much heat must be supplied to 0.60 kg of water at 25o C to change it to steam at 100oC ?

Change in temperature
Use Q = mc and Q = m l
Heat supplied= Heat to raise temp + Heat to boil = mc + ml
= 0.60(4200)(75) + 0.60(2.26x106)
= 1.545 x 106 J
Specific latent heat of vaporisation of water = 2.26x106 J kg-1
Specific heat capacity of water , c = 4200 J kg-1 oC-1
