Thao & Mirah CD / LP Selling Points: l + Kill Rock Starsʼ artist Thao and K Recordsʼ Mirah collaboration. + Touring in May/June. Overview: l Thao and Mirah both often go by their first names only. That is mostly why they wanted to make a record together. Other reasons include: they are friends, they were finally in San Francisco at the same time, and both joyfully welcomed a short departure from their respective successful solo careers to collaborate on a project. Mirah (K records) started making music in the late 90's in the Pacific Northwest, becoming a much beloved indie fixture there and well beyond. Her 5 celebrated solo records and multiple previous collaborations have brought her together with an eclectic assortment of DJs, Baltic music enthusiasts, entomologists and multi-media artists. Thao signed to Kill Rock Stars in 2006 and has since released two records with her band, The Get Down Stay Down, to wide critical and popular acclaim. She has fast established herself as a well-loved songwriter and performer in and out of the indie realm. The two enlisted dear friend and colleague Merrill Garbus (Tune-Yards, 4AD) as co-producer, guest musician (and for one song, guest writer) and the aptly titled album Thao and Mirah was recorded over 2 freewheeling weeks for Kill Rock Stars this past summer. Thao and Mirah each wrote a new batch of beautiful songs which were jointly performed and produced by the three with some help from fine Bay Area friends. The album is a collection of songs from two distinctly different, highly respected songwriters, threaded and woven together with the creative energy and freedom of collaboration. Such freedom allowed for varied and rewarding levels of innovation, and a determination to keep the music-making as in-house as possible: both Thao and Mirah assume many of the instrumentation duties: from drums and bottles to slide guitar and knee caps. All songs maintain the writers' shared gifts: profound emotional poignancy with lyrics and melodies to match and stay with you. Both Thao and Mirah work closely with Air Traffic Control- an organization dedicated to helping musicians become better social activists. They will team up with ATC to focus the release and touring efforts of Thao and Mirah toward supporting causes and organizations they love. Press Quotes: l “Projecting outward, she conveys a warm exuberance that keeps the music spry despite the weighty subject matter. Or, as she intones… "Sad people dance, too." – Pitchfork (October, 2009) “…a musician accomplishing the challenges she has set herself, both musically and communicatively. There's an interdependent exchange of significance between the music and lyrics, and their subtle yet compelling message ends up staying with you long after the stereo is switched off.” – Pitchfork (March, 2009)

Overview“The most important component in the whole musical spectrum is to be able to transcend and escape your own clichés while holding on to all the things you've learned and continue to love about creating music and sharing it. “ - Prefuse 73

Prefuse 73 songs have always existed in the form of highly detailed and evolved built-to-scale symphonies. However, with The Only She Chapters, releasing April 12th via Warp Records, Guillermo Scott Herren takes an even more exploratory approach to his methodical chaos. An impressive cast of contributors and unique recording process have helped form a body of music far closer in scope to the most esteemed modern composi-tional works rather than a record built fundamentally around beats and loops.

As the sounds within took shape, so did a defined female influence and unifying presence. Says Guillermo, “The process features all women vocalists and voices and the music was recorded very differently from how I normally work.” The vocalists here include Zola Jesus, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, Angel Deradoorian and the late Trish Keenan of Broadcast amongst others - all offering their entirely distinct textures and incantations to the already unorthodox musical tapestry and the idea of the album-as-female symbol has extended to collaborators on the visual front as well, enlisting illustrator Yuko Michishita and photographer Angel Ceballos.

In addition to the unique approach in galvanizing likeminded contributors (including the “sequencing and eliminating” guidance of friend and collaborator Tyondai Braxton), the musical method employed is remarkable as well, using contact microphones - most often used to record hollow bodied classical instruments, but in this case used for much more, including piano, prepared guitars, woodwinds and cellos - on most of the songs When meshed with the arsenal of electronics, it embellishes the acoustic sounds with vibrations created from the acoustic instruments in tandem with the female vocals at hand.

ʻNot so much a replication, but more of a study in reclamation.ʼ Kurt Wagner INVARIABLE HEARTACHE is an album inspired by a shared love of Nashville and its musical traditions. Lambchopʼs Kurt Wagner – a long time champion of the cityʼs history and charms – and Cortney Tidwell – whose family have, for decades, played a significant part in the cityʼs (country) musical life – are both fervent admirers of the music that has emerged from the city. It was an early collaboration on Cortneyʼs Donʼt Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up album that led to the two of them performing together at Nashville club The Basement in the summer of 2008. Such was the crowdʼs overwhelming response that evening that the idea of a duets album was born, and though work didnʼt begin for well over a year the concept was never forgotten. It was discussion about Cortneyʼs family history, however, that led them to the Chart Records catalogue, a label run by Cortneyʼs grandfather Slim Williamson, A&Red later by her father Cliff Williamson, and for which her mother Connie Eaton also recorded. The result of their subsequent fascination with what they discovered on dusty forgotten vinyl is an album that pays tribute to art of the duet and the classic songwriting that lay behind many of the albums and singles released by the label, a tribute on a grander scale to the forgotten sounds of ʻMusic City USAʼ. Keeping it in the family, INVARIABLE HEARTACHE was produced by Kurt Wagner, recorded by Cortneyʼs husband Todd Tidwell at Music Rowʼs Starstruck Studios and by Roger Moutenot (who produced much of Lambchopʼs last album) at Hap Town, and mixed by Mark Nevers, whose association with Lambchop goes back to its earliest days and who has since become one of Nashvilleʼs go-to guys. With 11 songs taken from the Chart Records catalogue, and one more recorded by Cortneyʼs mother for ABC Dunhill, this is a project that, from start to end, comes right from the heart. Highlights + Upcoming tour + ʻPicking Wild Mountain Berriesʼ to be serviced to key radio. + Video for ʻPicking Wild Mountain Berriesʼ available + Kurt Wagner internationally known as singer and songwriter for the critically acclaimed Lambchop + All songs originally released on historic Nashville label Chart Records, founded and run by Cortney Tidwellʼs grandfather and father, except ʻWhoʼs Gonna Love Me Nowʼ, originally recorded by Cortneyʼs mother.

THE GLOBESFUTURE SELF

bark110 CD/LP+MP3

barsuk records

STREET DATE: APRIL 26, 2011

The Globes were formed in their teenage years (recently – the youngest member is 21), spending afternoons in their sleepy city of Spokane, Washington collaboratively dissecting and interpreting the fundamentals of songwriting while forging together their own musical inspirations.

Now only a few years later they are proving to be an earnest musical force. 2010 saw the band log in about 30,000 miles touring with Menomena, A Place to Bury Strangers, Minus The Bear, and others, consistently selling tons of merch and leaving all-important word-of-mouth excitement in their wake. The Seattle press has already warmed to the band, with The Stranger lauding their “carefully crafted guitar rock that's beautiful, but with a bang,” and The Seattle Weekly finding “hints of darkness and discord... moody yet warm, deep and lovable. It's the ideal kind of music to get attached to, not demanding attention but definitely meriting it.” Additionally, national media are beginning to take notice – as of this writing, Alternative Press has already named the band one of their “100 Bands You Need To Know in 2011,” and coverage is confirmed in Under The Radar, Performer Magazine and Modern Drummer.

The Globes’ profile is increasing – they have a packed schedule at SXSW, and just snagged their first major festival slot at this year’s Sasquatch Festival. The band expects to be touring constantly or at least until they hit their mid-20s when it’s conceivable that they might need to take a rest for a while.

Future Self was written by The Globes and produced by John Goodmanson (Blonde Redhead, Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater-Kinney, etc). It promises to be one of the best rock records of 2011.

The Seattle based production duo Blue Sky Black Death is back to what they do best:

cinematic, epic, shoegaze influenced instrumental hip hop. Although Kingston and Young God

have always strayed from the expected by doing everything from indie rock influenced soundscapes

to synth pop to hardcore boom bap (with the likes of Guru, Jean Grae, Hieroglyphics, Jedi Mind

Tricks, etc) they have always maintained an unrivaled level of quality and consistency with all of

their work. Their 2008 instrumental record "Late Night Cinema" is commonly thought of as their

master work to date with critics such as XLR8R Magazine saying "Late Night Cinema may be

categorized as "Hip Hop", but it's better suited for the opera hall than your trunk."

2011's Fake Four Inc. release of NOIR is the official followup to Late Night Cinema filled with

epic soundscapes, cracking drums and soulful samples it is certain to make new fans notice

while pleasing anyone who has ever been a fan of Blue Sky Black Death.

On "Noir" BLUE SKY BLACK DEATH seamlessly fuse elements from all of their previous

releases to create a gorgeous washed out landscape of grandiose yet nostalgic and emotional

instrumental pieces with subtle vocals scattered accross a surreal world they’ve pieced together.

The familiar BSBD “Third Party” sound of manipulated 808 drum machines melded with an endless

blanket of reverb-drenched keyboards meets the classic “Late Night Cinema” sound of layered string

arrangements, booming drums and subtle samples. The final product is one of those truly moving pieces

of music that have a way of transporting the listener into the artists’ alternate universe.

C I S 1 0 3 8 : B I G P A U P E RB E Y O N D M Y M E A N SBig Pauper has had a busy twenty six years on earth. Formerly performing under the name Panzah Zandahz,

Portland's Big Pauper is an acclaimed producer, deejay and visual artist with a penchant for forgotten media

and discarded technologies. His ten year stint managing the abstract hip hop label Token Recluse found a

wide variety of projects in his lap. Pauper established himself with the notoriety of a full length cut and

paste reinterpretation of first Radiohead, and then Beck. In their wake, Pauper performed at

Scribble Jam & the Red Bull Music Academy, toured Europe a handful of times and worked with the

likes of Two Ton Sloth, Cut Chemist and the Dandy Warhols. Big Pauper also has been producing circuit

bent video work within the world-renowned sound art collective Folktek and gearing his projects towards a

variety of video-art installations.

His most recent effort "Beyond My Means" sits comfortably somewhere between a 93 era instrumental

hip hop record and some of the best downtempo electronic work out there today. It is a dusty, glitchy and

often times noisy tapestry of found sounds, VHS beats and analog synth textures. The album has it's roots

deep in sixties psych rock, the dregs of new age tape crustiness, our waning industrial society and most

evidently, schlock cinema (everything from Portuguese horror, to the sleaziest of nunsploitation).

The album draws comparisons to recent works from the Books, Broadcast, Odd Nosdam and Edan.

Beyond My Means unfolds like a grindhouse double feature, that private press record you can't believe

you found, or your third eye chakra babbling on after a group reiki session.

'Bespoke'Daedelus

After a busy couple of years of touring, remixing and releasing singles and EPs with Brainfeeder, All City, Magical Properties (the Daedelus home-imprint), Alpha Pup, Warp

and Stones Throw, Alfred Darlington aka Daedelus returns with his new full length album on Ninja Tune, “Bespoke,” a title summing up the unique and eccentric vision of a musical artist as obsessed with the clothing of the Victorian era as he is with the music

of the future.

Bespoke is defined as “a term employed to mean an item custom-made to measure.” Darlington explains that “I not only intended it as a reflection of the LP itself, but also

an outlook on life.” It’s Daedelus’ way of stating that it’s possible to grow and flourish as a musician without settling for the drab factory pre-sets of genre.

The album features vocal talent “from all around this current music mess” (as Darlington puts it). The wobble-bottomed “Overhwhelmed” features acclaimed soul singer Bilal. Inara George (of Bird and A Bee) illuminates the woozy psychedelia of “Penny Loafers” with nursery rhyme clarity. Kelela Mizanekristos adds an aching

soulfulness to late night ambience on “In Tatters”. The spooked steel drum and tabla montage of “French Cuffs” provides the perfect atmosphere for Baths (aka Will

Weisnefeld). Sometime fast rapper Busdriver shows he can croon on the up-tempo latino-carnival-house of “What Can You Do?” and Amir Yaghmai (appearing as Young

Dad) offers clean and melancholy post-Mozza melody to the disturbed under-pinning of “One and Lonely”. In addition, Yaghami also played guitar on much of the record, as

Daedelus set about working more live instrumentation into his musical textures than ever before. Om’mas Keith of Sa Ra contributes keyboards to the space-symphonic

“Suit Yourself” and Alfred’s Uncle Pete (aka Pete Curry of surf band Los Straightjackets) played most of the drums.

Unsurprisingly, despite the excesses of a musical dandy, the switchback turns of a restless and inquiring mind, the sheer invention of the mad scientist, everything on

“Bespoke” fits perfectly, the work of a master tailor, for whom craftsmanship and quality is every bit as important, but no more important, than standing out from the crowd.

Manifestations is a funky and diverse sonic collection from Mono/Poly, a talented member of the Brainfeeder roster. A well-paced work, the EP’s momentum grows and then contorts into other dimensions, balancing powerful rhythms and a beautiful depth for a holistically moving experience.

Manifestations has seven tracks, each with a very different tone. From the warm opening haze of the title tune to the complete crashing madness of “Punch The Troll In The Neck,” Mono/Poly has cultivated a choice sonic garden to explore. The shifty beats of “Glow” are straight off the streets of Los Angeles, while the stakeout sounds of “Toe Jam” descend into the groove with fresh urgency. “Forest Dark” has a bipolar personality altogether, with a funky industrial grind that flips over headfirst into the ripples of a peaceful pond.

A strong debut on the Brainfeeder label for Mono/Poly, Manifestations is a release whose many waxy layers are peeled away one at a time to reveal a glowing core of true talent and innovative sound design.

"Count Backwards is the story of an over-fed yet undernourished soul in search of a little peace and quiet,” explains Emika. “In times of stress, you can count your date of birth backwards or spell your birth month backwards and the logical side of the mind is kicked into action, resulting in a feeling of calm. Counting backwards is a coping mechanism in overwhelming moments of panic.”

"The song is inspired by my best friend from my teenage years. She was a lot older than me and was in therapy. She told me about how our brain works and how it connects thoughts, feelings and creativity. This was the first moment in my life where I became aware of my own creativity."

The single is remixed by British dubstep producers Kryptic Minds who have released several albums, their latest, 'Lost All Faith,' on their own Defcom Records last year. Marcel Dettmann transforms the original song into a deep Techno meditation for which Emika re- sang the vocals. Dettmann is a producer and resident DJ resident at the legendary Berlin club Berghain. He released his debut album 'Dettmann' on the club's label, Ostgut Ton, last year.

Thousands The Sound of everyThingnational Release date: Cd/LP: 04/26/2011

For their Bella Union debut The Sound of Everything Seattle based duo Thousands did not retreat to a studio. Kristian Garrard and Luke Berman set up recording equipment in abandoned barns, forgotten silos, stairwells and state parks in the Pacific Northwest to achieve an organic sound. No Engineers, no advice.

Outside recording is the impetus of Thousands. From the beginning, the duo experimented making music in an old cemetery with only instruments and Garrards’ handheld digital recorder. They quickly realized they had set the intimate tone in which to create their album and began traveling to quiet and inspiring places to record.

Thousands sought to incorporate the sound of barking dogs, crows flying nearby and wind rustling through the leaves into their songs. In turn, the band took extreme efforts to keep out the sounds of humankind. The duo also recorded each song live with just one take. Each track is in real time. There is also no post-production on the entire album.

The goal of The Sound of Everything is to have the listener feel they are sitting right on front of the band as they perform while birds fly by, leaves fall and the great outdoors enhances the sound. Beyond that, it’s an album that should truly come to life when listened to on headphones.

Garrard and Berman did record some of the material in more controlled atmospheres including a stairwell at the University of Washington and an old farmhouse where they used the central wood-burning stove to place the microphone. “This is how we were used to hearing ourselves,” says Kristian, “and we could project a decent balance of instruments and voice.”

The first track and the first song of their experiment “MTSES III” was recorded in a cabin along the Oregon Coast. The songs “We Don’t Tell,” “Big Black Road,” “Everything Turned Upside Down,” “Must Be Born Again” and “Love Won’t Come” were recorded in a littered silo of questionable structural durability with almost eight inches of snow. “Sun Cuz” was recorded in a nearby barn. In the background of “Everything Turned Upside Down”, one can hear nearby white water rafters picnicking and hitting rocks on the barn roof.

'Outmind'Matthewdavid

Peel back a layer of smog from the LA sky and fold yourself into the blanket of haze. The golden half-light catches glimmers that pass by most eyes. Up here, there are treasures for those who tune in. Matthewdavid operates In this magnetic cocoon, unspooling magic radiance. His music reflects beautiful, fleeting moments and magnifies them. Matthewdavid's compositions float like crackling clouds, antenna amplifying the dreams of the city below.

Matthewdavid is a man who builds with warm tones. He travels new paths gathering sounds to enhance the intricate dimensions of his creations. It was this hunt for inspired trails and blazing progress that pulled him to California. Matthewdavid made the move from southern states and was immediately embraced by the Los Angeles community. A willowy figure with wide smiles, his gentle presence and generous talents made him a welcome addition to internationally applauded LA creative circles: dublab, Poo-Bah, Low End Theory and Brainfeeder. Constant collaboration with these collectives helped inspire Matthewdavid to a build a platform of his own. His Leaving Records label has an ear to the next and an eye on the original. Through all these outlets Matthewdavid is dedicated to sharing elevated sounds and visions.

The songs unveiled on Outmind are destined for infinite replay. Light, gauzy moments blend with those densely layered. The biggest swing gives way to the slowest sway. These are classic jams obscured in fuzz and fog. Nostalgic jeeps bump invisibly to thumping bass. Outmind was lovingly crafted and resonates with Matthewdavid's heartfelt glow. His music's mysterious simplicity sparks senses. These songs come from far out to resonate within. Rotate your dial to a space between frequencies. Catch these ghost channels of golden pop. Outmind blends familiar rhythms with those lost long ago and others yet to come.

Matthewdavid's live performances are akin to watching a sorcerer conjure spirits from the deep. He pulls tones like artifacts from an astral trail that ebbs and flows with fresh discoveries. Along the way Matthewdavid collects exotic sound figures: spiraling amethyst cones and wild flowering buds. He treats each found sound like a bright fiber to be weaved into new waveforms. Outmind pulsates with this sense of constant discovery. It is a mosaic sparkling with mystic, radiant matter.

As you listen to Outmind set your ears to slow dissolve. Let yourself be wrapped in warmth and levitate skyward to an elegant high. This is the place Matthewdavid resides and if you want to get into the mindset you must get far far out out.

Black Sun

‘It's been 5 years since South London based duo Kode9 & the Spaceape's debut album. On this new disc, named after Kode9's inf luen-

tial 2009 single 'Black Sun', the intensity and themes of their debut ‘Memories of the future’ remain, but the delivery is clearer and more

rapid, the beats more jagged and restless. Starting as a dense onslaught, 'Black Sun' proceeds to expand and contract its galaxy, suck-

ing you into its orbit, and daring you to come and bathe in the warmth of its toxic glow.

Kode9 and the Spaceape explore an accelerated sonic fiction with this album. Spaceape verbally conjures up world under a ‘Black Sun’;

his lyrics intimate an unknown time, that resonates strongly with the present, after an unclassified radioactive event has transformed the

planet, much of which is now on fire. Spaceape sends radio transmissions from this irradiated, scorched zone. His demeanor has

changed. Kode9 has tuned into him on a different frequency.

Through the noise of crackling fires, rise the ominous drums of 'Black Smoke', an incantation exorcising demons hungover from their first

album. Reciting angular fictions of bodily breakdown and mutation (derived from his own experiences during the making of this record),

confrontations with death, illicit, destructive love, crashing economies, hypocritical politics, failed revolts, underachieving gods and

coded references to cartoon characters from the 1970s, Spaceape balances narrative and abstraction in his densely layered lyrics. On

three of the songs, the duo are joined by the yearning backing vocals of Shanghai based singer Cha Cha. She first worked with them on

the 2009 single ‘Time Patrol’.

Musically, Kode9 uses the album to develop his own innovations and strategies. His neon noir synths sidestep fashionable 8bit novelty

and avoid the forced euphoria of many of his contemporaries. The mostly drumless pounding of 'Promises' and 'Bullet Against Bone' are

turbo-charged upgrades of the duo's 'Bass Fiction' ‘micro genre’ initiated in 2004 by their iconoclastic debut, the Prince cover, 'Sine of

the Dub'.

The broken, drone house tracks 'Green Sun', 'Love is the Drug' and the remake of title track, 'Black Sun', plus the analog synth work on

'Otherman' inherit in mutated form the melancholy DNA of 'Memories of the Future' and build on the unsettling dancefloor dynamics of

the original ‘Black Sun’ single. Even the astral ambience and dread poetics of 'Neon Red Sign', glides along on bustling hi-hats and

leaning, 2step syncopations despite the gravity of it’s deep bass drops and wobbling sub.

Providing moments of breathing space in this torched environment, are 2 beatless instrumentals. Out of the chittering, insectoid rustling

and squelches, wavers the electric keys of 'Hole in the Sky'. The album's finale is 'Kryon', Kode9's collaboration with Flying Lotus,

started around 4 years ago. If you have heard Kode9 & Spaceape play live in the last few years you will recognize this epic wall of analog

synth.

But perhaps the fractured clarity of the album shines through strongest in the spiky funk, skattered snares and intertwined vocal call and

response in 'The Cure' or the crunked out rapidfire paradoxes of 'Am I'. The energy is involving and enveloping. The changes in speed

and pressure create an exciting ride around the Black Sun.

“It can’t be done, man!” That’s what Dave Hahn, mastermind behind Dub Is A Weapon, heard when he fi rst fl oated the idea of a live dub group, as he and his mates listened to some prime 1960s King Tubby cuts in the band van. “Everyone seemed to think you could only do dub in the studio,” Hahn recalls.

Hahn set out to prove them wrong, with skills learned live and on the road, and with help from a Jamaican beatnik percussionist (who recorded with Bob Marley), an old high school friend, and young upstarts from the Brooklyn scene. Together they’ve honed their live take on the genre’s spaced-out grooves, a sound felt in full force on Vaporized.

Press Quotes“Bass and drum coming so hard and dangerous you can see the competition’s bloodstains.” - Village Voice “A sprawling supergroup that combines the spacey atmospherics of dub with the brassy big-band soul of African pop.” - New York Magazine “Dub Is A Weapon charged ahead with overstated rhythms and a spiraling undulating sound that literally forced you to move or loose your balance.” - Jambase Recently serving as both opener and backing band of dub pioneer Lee “Scratch” Perry, the group recalls the grittier, hard-hitting sounds of Britain’s Dub Syndicate. “I realize that most people’s idea of dub is something that you sit on your couch and listen to while doing bong hits,” chuckles Hahn, 32. “But I wanted to do something that would make people get up and dance-and something that was a little more confrontational.” Mission accomplished. - Relix

With IV, Chatham County Line have become who they are. Visible throughout the band’s career, their constant evolution steps to the forefront of the creative process on IV. Here, songwriting is paramount, yet the band’s instrumental talents and gorgeous harmonies still rise to the surface. CCL’s traditional instrumentation provides a fitting foil to their dedication to innovative approaches to old-time music. On this their fourth studio album, Chatham County Line takes their rightful place among the new guard of indie-roots music and perhaps pen their masterpiece in the process.
