Digital Thread Painting Seminar with Sylvain Bergeron

Sylvain Bergeron is a self-taught seamster and machine embroidery teacher who came into quilting in 2005 when he asked himself a simple question: what if embroidery were the quilt? The answer

came in the form of quilt tops containing anywhere from 1.25 to 4 million stitches where simple line and color create complex images. He was the 2006 recipient of the first ever Master Award for

Thread Artistry at the Fall International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX and of the Gold Prize at the 9th Quilt Nihon Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan. He is an educator by trade and lives in Oswego, IL.

Friday & Saturday, September 29 & 30 10-4 $175

Make your own Digital Thread Painting! Join one of the latest trends in quilting with Sylvain Bergeron and learn how to create a quilt design out of machine embroidery. In this two day seminar, you will learn how to digitize a simple geometric embroidery motif and how to incorporate it in a quilt layout in the BERNINA Quilter software. On the second day, we will stitch out the embroidery blocks and piece them into a 2’ x 2’ quilt with built-in binding. So join us for two days of creative fun, brush up on your embroidery software skills and learn a couple of new tricks in quilt binding while you're at it. Sylvain's teaching philosophy can be summed up as 'I never learned so much while having so much fun'.

Art & Stitch Retreat with Carol Best

Join us in learning Art & Stitch! Carol Best is a certified teacher for Art

& Stitch, a digitizing software for longarm and embroidery designs. She

has developed four classes that will take you from a beginner to expert!

Each session $85 Take all four for $310

Fri Sept 8 10-1 Skill Builder 1 This hands-on class will cover basic features of Art & Stitch. You will learn how to draw, edit, apply stitches and save your designs to take to your quilting system. We will use the powerful vector tools to learn how to draw designs with quilting in mind. You will also learn how to edit existing designs you already own.

Fri Sept 8 2-5 Skill Builder 2 You now know the basics, let’s build on those skills and learn advanced features. We will start by looking at the many different fill types. Fun with TrueType fonts will be next as we learn how to personalize a design or create artwork from object based fonts. Next we will learn how to create continuous line designs. We end the lesson with looking at Edge-to-Edge designs.

Sat Sept 9 10-1 Skill Builder 3 This hands-on class is for those who want to digitize like a professional. You have learned the basics and have added some advanced techniques from the previous Skill Builder classes. Now we need to apply these skills and put them to work in your quilting projects. This class will start by providing ideas on where to look for design inspiration. From that inspiration, we will learn to create design sets that include blocks, borders, mitered corners and E2E. We will look at techniques such as interlocking designs, feathers, and pearls.

Sat Sept 9 2-5 Skill Builder 4 This class will get you thinking out of the box of traditional digitizing. We will look at how EQ7 can be used in conjunction with Art & Stitch. You will learn how to use both programs to audition designs on your quilt and reduce the time it takes to layout designs when you get to your quilting system. We will then go Beyond the Mouse! You will be shown how to use your iPad or Android tablet to draw designs and then send them to Art & Stitch ready to apply stitches. You will learn how to create an e-Catalog of all your designs and save to

Basic Stitches on a Wool Pear $30.00 with Beth Norris for beginners and beyond

Thu June 29 10 – 2

This is the first in a series of classes focused on hand stitching. Have you ever stitched on WOOL? It is dreamy! Be ready to fall in love. In this class we’ll practice some basic, everyone-should-know-them embroidery stitches and use them to embellish the sides of a pear which you may assemble and stuff at home.

Intro to Wool Applique - Of Partridges and Maybe Pears $30.00

with Beth Norris for beginners and beyond

Tue July 11 10 - 2

Have you ever tried applique? WOOL applique? It is a dream! No need to turn edges, needles easily, no hoop required. Compared to cotton needle turn applique, it is soooo forgiving. It can be done in less than perfect conditions without perfect light, without perfect stillness (as in, you CAN do it in a moving car, as long as you are not driving). In this class we’ll take a look at a couple of ways to attach your wool applique to the background and we’ll explore a few of the more common stitches and some of their relatives. In class you will work on a piece to be used as a journal cover or a small pillow.

Second Stitches: Wool Needle Book $30.00

with Beth Norris for beginners and beyond

Fri Aug 4 10 - 2

This is the second in a series of classes focused on hand stitching. In this class we’ll embellish the cover and inner pockets of a wool needle keeper with some more involved, sometimes multi-step embroidery stitches before we blanket stitch it together. It would help if you have previously taken the Basic Stitches Pear class.

Jacobean Wool Pillow $35.00 with Beth Norris for beginners and beyond

Sat Aug 19 10 – 3

Have you discovered the joy of stitching wool? This pillow is wool on wool applique, so the stitching is buttery! The stitches aren’t difficult and are limited in number. The techniques used address some of the challenges of marking and placement that make working with wool different from, say, cotton and the designer/author has an unusual,

perhaps unique method for making the work look like trapunto without actually stuffing the designs.

Buttercup Wool Pincushion $30.00 with Beth Norris for beginners and beyond

Mon Aug 28 10 - 2

Have you experienced the delight of stitching on wool? This pincushion is wool on wool applique. The stitches aren’t difficult and are limited in number. The techniques used address some of the challenges of marking and placement that make working with wool different from cotton. The results? A darling, useful pincushion.

Bird Dance Block $35.00 with Beth Norris for beginners and beyond

Thu Sept 21 10 - 3

Lusciously layered! Dramatically dimensional! Fabulously fun! What else can you say about these dancing birds! Have you been wanting to try a wool project? Here’s one to brighten your space! In this class we’ll work on one bird block in Sue Spargo’s Bird Dance book. She’s known for layering her background AND her applique as well as wonderfully dimensional stitches. We will assume that you have done some basic embroidery, building on the Basic Stitches and Second Stitches classes. We’ll focus on some of Sue Spargo’s favorite stitches and the dimensional stitches in particular.

Join the

Wool Stitchers Group! 10-12 Monday June 12, July 10, Aug 14, Sept 11

No Charge

Do you just love to stitch on wool and enjoy the friendships and inspiration that comes with a group? Are you in a block of the month club and need encouragement to get started? Join us on the second Monday of each month and sit and stitch! Bring your current project and any show and share.

Thursday, August 17 5 - 8

Come in late and shop in the cool of the night! 25% off all BERNINA accessories!

Great prices on machines and software! We’ll have a HOOT

of a time!

DOING WHAT WE LOVE TO DO Larry Delceg - Senior Service Tech If you're reading this, it's probably because you love to sew. It's more than a hobby, it's a passion. And when you love to do something, you find yourself thinking about it even when you're not doing it. Is that you? When you love to do something, it feels good just to be around it. Many of our customers tell us that they feel that way about the Bernina Connection. They find any excuse they can to come by and receive inspiration. Perhaps it's our artistic fabric selection. Or new skills learned in a class. Or our staff who are truly excited about sewing. But whatever the reasons, we love that our customers see us as a contagious destination where they want to hang out. And because of this, we're growing. And our service department is growing too! The Bernina Connection Tech staff has something in common with you. We love what we do. We look forward to pulling out our tools, and providing your machine with the best TLC we possibly can. And as we work, we enjoy each other, because we've developed close friendships. Many of you have met our tech staff: Karen, David, Richard and myself. However, more and more wonderful customers keep bringing in their machines, so to keep up, we have recently added a new member to our team. George Fry has years of experience in the aerospace industry, working with exotic machines that produce parts requiring accuracy within a thousandth of a millimeter. This is just the kind of guy we want to have servicing your Bernina! George has passion for what he does, he does it with excellence, and his motivation is his love for people. We are thrilled to have George as part of our team! We want to encourage you to help your sewing machine to continue doing what IT loves to do. For your machine to stay happy and healthy, its complex moving parts need routine service. Spring is an excellent time to bring your mechanical friend in for its annual "spa day". George will thoroughly clean and lubricate it, and we will invest several hours as all adjustments are calibrated to factory specifications. Then your machine will return ready to follow its passion - to help you follow yours! Hope to see you soon! Larry

BC COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Quilts of Valor

Monday June 26 10 - 2 with Mary Furniss

A Quilt of Valor is a wartime quilt made to honor our war wounded. It is a tangible way to say: “Thank you for your service, sacrifice and valor for our country.” Bernina Connection celebrates our soldiers by assembling quilts to be sent to the Quilts of Valor Project. Bring your own quilt pattern and fabrics or assemble a predetermined quilt pattern. Like hand sewing? We have a few quilts that need to be finished with binding and a label before sending.

Quilt tops will be completed to send to the project. We will have machines set up in the classroom or you are welcome to bring your own machine. Please RSVP so we can plan. For more information about Quilts of Valor go to www.qovf.org. Thanks for your support!

Friday June 9 10 - 1

Join Cecile, DiAnn and friends in making heart shaped pillows for breast cancer survivors that will be given to women at the time of their surgery. We need people of all ages and expertise to cut, stitch, stuff, and attach labels. Since May 2004, over 10,000 hearts have been

made with materials donated by friends. Tina’s Treasures

are always available at Bernina Connection for those who

need them.

Won’t you come help with this project? A little of your

time or resources can really make a difference for

someone experiencing breast cancer. Call to let us know

that you are coming and if you are bringing your sewing

machine so we can plan for machines, work stations and

fabric. Working kids are welcome!
