The Ozark Society was founded in 1962 as anorganized effort to save the Buffalo River fromproposed dams. After a 10year struggle, theBuffalo River was designated as America’s firstNational River in 1972. In order to further itsaims of conservation, education, andrecreation, in 1967, the Society created theOzark Society Foundation. Its first publishedbook was Kenneth L. Smith’s The Buffalo RiverCountry, which remains in print today. Sincethat time more than 25 publications have beenproduced by the Ozark Society and the OzarkSociety Foundation under the Ozark SocietyBooks designation. The Ozark Society, in cooperation with the U.S. ForestService, has produced a series of new Arkansas Wildernessmaps. These GPS friendly maps use UTM grids and thestandard topo scale of 1:24,000. The Ozark Highland Trailand private inholdings are very clearly marked. Testincludes valuable contract information and Leave No Tracecamping tips. and the maps feature the photography of TimErnst. For the first time, an entire wilderness area can beviewed on one map. Leatherwood, Richland, and HurricaneCreek, Upper Buffalo and East Fork maps are now available.

These two maps, first published by Trails Illustrated in 199293, useUSGStopographic maps as a base. T.I. has added hiking and horse trails, roads,campgrounds and other features not shown on the 1960svintage USGSmaps. The West Half map covers the Buffalo from its headwatersdownstream to Woolum; the East Half map, from Woolum to the WhiteRiver. Both maps show routes of access to river and wilderness, and floaters'carshuttle routes. Map users will find it easy to calculate the mileage of anytrail hike or river trip. The West Half map has a list of day hikes graded bydifficulty. Both maps contain text information for hikers, floaters, horsebackriders, for anyone wanting to explore the Buffalo.
