Harlem EatUp! Team Invited to
Hillary Clinton RallyOn Wednesday, March 30 the Harlem EatUp! executive team and I were invited to attended a Hillary Clinton rally at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Whether you are a democrat or a republican, one thing was clear (from an event production perspective, of course), the rally was anything but seamless. Even though a little unorganized, I really enjoyed attending this event and found it to be a great learning opportunity. I was able to conclude the following:
Make sure all event staff/representatives are clearly identifiable (t-shirts, nametags, etc).Upon arrival we were supposed to check in with a Clinton campaign representative near the front entrance of the Apollo. The representative(s) were unmarked and not easy to locate, leaving us wandering around outside.
Strive to keep security efficient but thorough. This element was handled well (I guess that’s what happens when you have the secret service as security). The whole process was smooth and moved quickly.
Ensure event locations (specifically at entrances and exits) are properly staffed.Volunteers at the rally were scarce. As we entered the theater a women stated that we would be seated by another campaign representative. After actively seeking out a representative and failing, we decided to take it upon ourselves to select seats- luckily for us that was in the fourth row!
Not all events start on time! It was advertised that Secretary Clinton would speak at 11:30AM, but it was not until about 12:15PM when the program actually began. While we waited an in-house DJ kept the crowd entertained. This was an excellent distraction.
When Secretary Clinton finally did start speaking she did well! It was apparent that her and her team did their research. She was able to easily connect with the audience through telling relevant stories. We all enjoyed the afternoon and I loved that I had to opportunity to view the experience from a logistical perspective. I look forward to attending more events and continuing to learn through these live experiences!
