It gives me great pleasure to put down a few words in the IEM Southern Branch Annual Dinner Souvenir Programme 2011. I would also like put on record my sincere appreciation to the Organising Committee who has spent a lot of time in organising this event.

My heartiest congratulations too to the IEM Southern Branch for a very successful session and for the initiatives in organising many successful

activities at the Branch level during the past session.

The IEM now has 11 Branches of which 9 of these Branches are based in the Peninsular and 3 in East Malaysia to take care of the interest of the members in these regions. As the IEM President, I believe that the interest of the Branches and the matters at the National Head Office carry equal weight. I also believe that relationship can be immeasurably strengthened though personal interactions between National Office and the Branch and between members and Branch at very activities being organised. Thus, the extensive people-to-people link are especially important.

It is necessary for the Branch Committee to be active within its own region especially in organising activities and providing support services to the members residing in their area. The Branches should also take the initiative to channel engineering and technical advice and services where needed, especially to the State Government Agencies and Ministries within their sphere.

Engineers play a tremendous role in nation building and their contributions are indispensable to the country and our quality of life. The commitment of our members, both at the National and Branch levels, in working to advance our country’s progress is therefore praiseworthy. Your efforts contribute to a brighter future and embody the spirit of engineering innovation.

Finally, I hope that our proactive efforts will continue in the future so as to ensure the continued success of our beloved profession.

Assalamualaikum wrt. wbt. and a very Good Evening,

On behalf of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (Southern Branch), it gives me great pleasure to welcome all of you to our 40th Anniversary Dinner.

We are very honoured this year to have the presence of Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar and Duli Yang Maha Mulia Raja Zarith Sofiah binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah to grace our occasion. I would like

to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for the privilege granted. I would also like to thank all our distinguished guests for being with us this evening.

The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) is currently one of the largest professional bodies and learned societies in this country with membership of more than 25,000 comprising of engineers and engineering students of higher learning institutions. Our branch is among the earliest that was set-up by IEM in 1971 and this year is a very special one since it marks our 40th year in existence since its official registration with The Registrar of Society.

As engineering professionals, we can hold our head high since the engineering profession is still held in high regard in Malaysian society and that we are looked upon as competent and rational. With continu-ous and rapid changes in the demands which the engineering profession is expected to cope with, 21st century engineers like us will continue to be important contributors to economic growth and development and improved quality of life. Our engineering activity in the development of Iskandar Malaysia is only one example where we learn to cope with new challenges and show our mettle as new age engineers. We have come a long way from being those who just have good grasp of technical knowledge to what we are today. We have not only learned to be creative problem solvers, but have learned to understand the importance of working with people of various fields and disciplines as well. We have always maintained good relationship with the state government, technical agencies and other professional bodies and also deeply committed in developing future generations of engineers where half of our members are gradu-ates and young fledgling engineers.

Tonight’s event is not only the annual get-together session among engineering fraternities but also for us to network and reconnect with each other. I would like to record my heartfelt appreciation to all members of the organizing committee, comprising of past chairmen, the young engineers section and the secretariat staffs for their dedication and hard-work in making tonight’s event a reality. Most importantly, I would like to thank all members for your continuous support and sincere commitment to the well being of our Institution. I hope you will continue to do so to ensure IEM’s long established tradition of excellence and for the betterment of the Institution, the engineering profession and above all, our Nation.
