The booklet has been entitled, 40 Hadithon the Qurn although the number of narrationsincluded in the book far exceed forty in number. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Whoever recites theQurn secures knowledge ofprophethood within his ribs[bosom], though Divine Revela-tionis not sent upon him. Itdoes not befit one endowedwith the Qurn that he shouldbe indignant with those in an-ger,nor should he indulge inany act of ignorance with thosewho are ignorant, while theSpeech of Allah is there in hischest.Source: Hakim, Targhib wa Tarhibno. 2/ - 301 [Sahih] 11. [Finally]...upon you isthe Rememberance of Allah andthe recitation of His Book, for itis light for you on earth and [ameans by which] you will bementioned in the Heavens. 13. Fastingwill say, O My Lord! I pre-ventedhim from food and de-sires,so accept my intercessionfor him. The Torahwas revealed on the 6th of Ra-madhan.The Injeel [Gopel] wasrevealed on the 13th of Ramad-han.The Zabur on the 18th ofRamadhan. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Allah has His own peopleamong mankind. They said: OMessenger of Allah, who arethey? He said: The people ofthe Qurn, the people of Allahand those who are closest toHim.Source: Ibn Majah no. - 215[Hasan] Jabir ibn Abdullah said, Allahs Messenger shrouded every two martyrs of Uhud in onepiece of cloth and then hewould ask, Which of them knew more Qurn? The Messenger of Allahsaid, Whose Faith [Iman]amongst the various creationsastounds you? They [the Com-panions]said, The Angels Hesaid, The Angels - Why wouldthey not Faith [when they arewith their Lord] They [then]said, The Prophets He said,The Prophets recieve revela-tionso how would they not be-lieve?They [then] said, [Us]the Companions He said, TheCompanions whom are with theProphets - so how would theynot believe? - However theFaith of people which is amaz-ingand astounding is those whocome after you who find Books18 : . : ! : . : ! : . : ! : 19. which has written in them reve-lation[the Qurn] - and hencethey believe in it and obey andfollow it - they are the oneswhose Faith is [truly] astound-ing.Source: Bazzar no. 3/318, SilsilahAhadeeth as-Saheehah no. 3215 -19 [Sahih] Chapter: Legislation/Judgement belongs to Allah10. The Messenger of Allahsent Muadh to Yemen, so Hesaid: How will you judge? Hesaid: I will judge according towhat is in Allahs Book. Hesaid, If it is not in AllahsBook? He said: Then with theSunnah of the Messenger of Al-lah He said: If it is not inthe Sunnah of Messenger of Al-lah? He said: I will endeve-ourto make Ijtihad [exert effortto make the correct judge-ment].He said: All praise isdue to Allah, the One Who . . . . 20. made the messenger of the Mes-senger20of Allah suitable.Source: Tirmidhee no. 1327 . . Chapter: In-fighting whenLeaders do not Rule by the QurnThe Messenger of Allah said,O Muhajirun, there are fivethings with which you will betested, and I seek refuge withAllah lest you live to see them:Immorality never appearsamong a people to such an ex-tentthat they commit it openly,but plagues and diseases thatwere never known among thepredecessors will spread amongthem. They do not cheat inweights and measures but theywill be stricken with famine, se-verecalamity and the oppres-sionof their rulers. They do notwithhold the Zakah of theirwealth, but rain will be withheld . . 21. from the sky, and were it not forthe animals, no rain would fallon them. They do not breaktheir covenant with Allah andHis Messenger, but Allah willenable their enemies to over-powerthem and take some ofwhat is in their hands. Unlesstheir leaders rule according tothe Book of Allah and seek allgood from that which Allah hasrevealed, Allah will cause themto fight one another.Source: Ibn Majah no. - 4019[Sahih]21 . 22. Chapter: Importance of Studying andTeaching the Qurn11. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, This Qurn is the Ban-quetof Allah. Learn as much asyou can from His banquet. ThisQurn is the Rope of Allah, andit is the clear Light and [the ef-fectiveand beneficial] Healing.It is a protection for the onewho clings to it and a rescue forthe one who follows it. It is notcrooked and so puts thingsstraight. It does not deviate soas to be blamed. Its wonders donot cease. It does not wear outwith much repetition. So reciteit for Allah will reward you forthe recitation of every letter....[also Abdullah ibn Masud said,This Qurn is the Banquet ofAllah. Whoever enters it issafe.]Source: Hakim no. 1/555, Darimi -22 [Sahih] 23. Qurtubi in his introduction to histafseer quotes an explaination tothis hadeeth as, [the Banquet] is ametaphor. The Qurn is likened tosomething Allah has prepared forpeople. They have good and bene-fitsin it. Then He has invited themto it.12. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, ...A group of people donot gather in a house amongstthe Houses of Allah [i.e. Masjid]reciting the Book of Allah andstudying it between themselves except that tranquillity des-cendsupon them, they are enve-lopedby mercy and surroundedby the angels and Allah men-tionsthem with those with Him.[i.e. the higher angels]Source: Muslim no. 9/1023, AbuDawud no. - 1455 [Sahih]Qurtubi quotes a saying in his taf-seer,The metaphor of those whorecite the Qurn without knowingits tafsir [explanation] is that of23 24. some people to whom a lettercomes from their king at nightwhen they have no lamp. They arealarmed, not knowing what the let-tercontains. The metaphor of theone who knows the tafsir [explana-tion]is that of a man who bringsthem a lamp so that they can readwhat the letter says.The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Whoever teaches oneverse of the Book of Allah Al-mighty,he will be rewarded24[every time] it is recited.Source: Silsilah Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no. - 1335 [Sahih] Chapter: Parents Honoured due to a ChildsRelationship with the Qurn13. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Whoever recited theQurn, studied it, and acted ac-cordingto what it contains; onthe Day of Judgment his parentswill be dressed with a crown oflight, its brightness is like that of 25. the sun. And his parents will beadorned with two bracelets, ofwhich the whole world is notequivalent to them [in worth].So they will say, Why are webeing adorned with these? Itwill be said, This is because ofyour child taking [the recitation,teaching and acting upon] theQurn.Source: Hakim, Targhib wa Tarhib -25 [Sahih] Chapter: A Warning Not to Learn the Qurn From.14. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Learn [study] the Qurn,and ask Allah [swt] to grant youParadise by it, before whenthere comes people who learn itand ask by it, the worldy plea-sures.Indeed, the Qurn islearnt by three types of people:- A man who shows off by it- A man who eats by it [money,dunyah] : 26. - A man who recites it for thesake of Allah [swt].Source: Baihaqi, Shub al-Iman no. - 2405 [Sahih]15. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Read the Qurn and actby it. And do not abandon it, donot exceed its limits, do not eatwith it [i.e. money] and do notseek more by using it.Source: Variation quoted by Nawawiin Tibyan, Sahih al-Jami no. 1168 -26 [Sahih] Chapter: A Warning to those who Misuse the Qurnand have an Incorrect/Corrupt Intention16. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, [on the Day of Judge-ment]and a man who ac-quiredknowledge and taughtothers, and read Qurn. He willbe brought, and Allah will re-mindhim of His blessings, andhe will acknowledge them. He[swt] will say, What did you dowith them? He will say, I ac- . . . : : . : 27. quired knowledge and taughtothers, and read the Qurn forYour sake. He [swt] will say,You are lying. You acquiredknowledge so that it would besaid that you were a scholar; andyou read Qurn so that it wouldbe said that you were a Reciter,and it was said. Then He willorder that he be dragged on hisface and thrown into the Fire.Source: Muslim no. 1905a - [Sahih]27 . . . Chapter: A Warning to those who interpret the QurnInsincerely without Knowledge and merely followingtheir personal views17. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Whoever says [something]about the Qurn without know-ledge,then let him take his seatin the Fire.Source: Tirmidhee no. - 2950[Hasan] 28. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, And whoever says [some-thing]about the Qurn accord-ingto his [own] opinion, thenlet him take his seat in the Fire.Source: Tirmidhee no. - 2951[Hasan]28 Chapter: ArgumentationThe Prophet Muhammadsaid, Do not argue in theQurn [meaning do not op-pose/argue against what theQurn says] for in this arguingis DisbeliefSource: Jami as-Sagheer no. 9739 - [Sahih] The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Do not argue using theQurn [i.e. in a dispute with oneanother]. [The negative resultwould be] you would deny theBook of Allah by using [oneayat] against another [ayat]. Iswear by Allah indeed the Be-lieverif he is argued against with ! 29. the Qurn he [out of respect]will loose [not continue the ar-gument]...indeed the hypocrite,if he argues using the Qurn, hewill win [the argument be-causethe Believer will not argueback].Source: Silsilah Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no. - 3447 [Sahih]29The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Indeed what I fear mostfor you all is that a man recitesthe Qurn until you can see theeffects on his face [enlightened]and he will be like a shield forIslam by the permission of Al-lah,then he detatches himself[from the Qurn], he threw itbehind himself and he rushedupon his neighbour with thesword and he will accuse him ofShirk [polytheism].One of the companions saidO Prophet of Allah which ofthem will be the polytheist, the ) ) : : : ( 30. accuser or the one accused? Chapter: Taddabbur [Pondering] on the DeepMeanings of the QurnHasan al-Basri [one of the Ta-bieen]said, There was not re-vealeda [single] Ayat from theQurn except that it has a Dha-hir[an apparent] and Batin [in-ner]and every letter has a value[measure] and for every valueis an ending.Source: Baghawi, Sharh us Sunnahno. 1/21431 Abdullah ibn Masood, theCompanion, said, When youintend to acquire knowledge,deeply study the Qurn for in itlies the [principles] of know-ledgeof the ancients and futuregenerations.Source: Ghazali, Kitab Adab Tilawatul Qurn 32. Chapter: Etiquettes and Virtues of Reciting the Qurn18. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Allah listens more atten-tivelyto a man with a beautifulvoice who recites Qurn outloud than the master of a sing-ingslave-girl listens to hisslave.Source: Ibn Majah no. 1340, IbnHibban no. - 754 [Sahih according to Ibn Hibban, Suyutiand Ibn Taymiyah]33 19. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Beautify the Qurn withyour voices for indeed the nicevoice increases the beauty of theQurnSource: Baihaqi Shubul Iman no.2/ - 868 [Sahih] 20. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Whoever recites a letterfrom Allahs Book, then hereceives the reward from it, andthe reward of ten the like of it. I 34. do not say that Alif Lam Mim isa letter, but Alif is a letter, Lamis a letter and Mim is a letter.Source: Tirmidhee no. - 2910[Hasan]34 The Prophet Muhammadsaid, The one who does notrecite the Qurn in a melodiousmanner is not from usSource: Bukhari no. - 7527 [Sa-hih] 21. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Recite the Qurn in[your houses]. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Purify [clean] yourmouths with the siwak [tooth-stick]for indeed it [the mouth] 35. is the pathway of the Qurn.Source: Baihaqi Shubul Iman no.2/ - 862 [Sahih]35The Prophet Muhammadsaid, The one who recites theQurn loudly is like one whogives charity openly, and the onewho recites the Qurn silently islike the one who gives charity insecret.Source: an-Nisai no. - , 1663[Hasan] 23. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Indeed the best of peoplewho recite is one whom whenyou hear his recitation you cansee that he Fears Allah.Source: Hiyatul Awliyah no. 4/21 - [Sahih] 36. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, The parable of the believ-erwho recites the Qurn is thatof a sweet citrus fruit, its fra-granceis nice and its taste isnice. The parable of the believerwho does not recite the Qurnis that of a date, it has no smellbut its taste is sweet. The para-bleof the hypocrite who recitesthe Qurn is that of basil, itsfragrance is nice but its taste isbitter. The parable of the hypo-critewho does not recite theQurn is that of the colocynth[bitter desert fruit], its smell isbetter and its taste is bitter.Source: Tirmidhee no. - 2865[Sahih]36 The Prophet Muhammadsaid, And recite the Qurn inthe early dawn. Verily the recita-tionof the Qurn in the earlydawn is ever witnessed [17:78].The Prophet said, It is wit-nessedby the angels of the night( ) 37. and the angels of the day.Source: Tirmidhee no. - 3135[Sahih]24. Abdullah ibn Amr says, Al-lahsMessenger said to me,Recite the whole Qurn in amonth. I said, But I have thepower [to do more than that].Allahs Messenger said,Then finish the recitation ofthe Qurn in seven days, anddo not finish it in less than thisperiod.Source: Bukhari no. - 5054[Sahih]37 . The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Envy is not justified butin case of two persons only: onewho, having been given [know-ledgeof] the Qurn by Allah,recites it during the night andday [and also acts upon it] and aman who, having been givenwealth by God, spends it during : . . . . 38. the night and the day [for thewelfare of others. seeking thepleasure of their Lord].Source: Muslim no. 815a - [Sahih]Chapter: Disturbing others whilst reciting the Qurn25. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, When someone is in Salah[prayer] then they are in deepconversation with their LordAlmighty so you should see ifanyone is engaged in this deepconversation with their Lord[i.e. Salah] and do not makeyour voices loud one over theother in your recitation [of theQurn].Source: Musnad Ahmad no. 7/188 -38 - [Hasan] 39. Chapter: The Prophet MuhammadsRelationship with the Qurn26. Bara said, I heard theProphet reciting Surat at-Tinwaz Zaitun [95: By the Fig andthe Olive] in the Isha prayer andI have never heard anybodywith a better voice or recitationthan his.Source: Bukhari no. - 7546 [Sahih]In describing the Prophets recita-tion { } of the Qurn, one of thecompanions said, He[the Prophet] would extend hisvoice appropriately and clearly[every letter would be pronouncedproperly] [Abu Dawud no. 1465 -The Prophet Muhammadsaid, Allah does not listen soattentively to anything as Helistens to the recitation of theQurn by a Prophet who recitesit well with a melodious and39 [Sahih] 40. audible voice.Source: Muslim no. 793b [Sahih]27. One of the Companionssaid, I saw the Messenger ofAllah and he was praying - hischest sounded like boiling waterdue to [him] crying.Source: Ibn Hibban no. - 753[Sahih]40 28. Abdullah ibn Masud said,The Messenger of Allahasked me to recite the Qurn.He said Messenger of Allah,[how] should I recite to youwhereas it has been sent downto you? He [the Prophet] said,I desire to hear it from some-oneelse. So I recited Surat an-Nisa [4] till I reached the verse:How then shall it be when Weshall bring from every people awitness and bring you againstthem as a witness? [4:41]. After uswill be people for whom it iseasy to memorise the Qurn,but hard to act by it. Chapter: Not using Memorized Ayat in the Prayercauses forgetfulness32. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, When the Companion ofthe Qurn performs Salah, re-citingit by night and day, heretains it and if he doesnt [use itin] Salah he forgets.Source: Silsilah Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no. - 597 [Sahih] 44. Chapter: Holding on to the Qurn - Never go Astray33. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, ...And I have left you twoheavy [important issues]: Thefirst of them is the Book of Al-lah.In it is the Guidance andthe Light. Whoever holds firmlyto it and takes from it he [then]is upon the Guidance. Whoevererrs with respect to it goes as-tray.So take from the Book ofAllah Almighty and hold firmlyto it. Ali said I heard the Messen-gerof Allah says, Fitnah willcertainly come. I asked what isthe way out O Messenger ofAllah? He replied,The Book of Allah [swt] is theway, for it contains informationof what happened before you,news of what will come after: : 46. you and a decision regardingmatters that will occur amongyou....It is deciscive [fasl] andnot a joke [hazl]. Whoeverleaves leaves it, is a tyrant andAllah [swt] will break him, and ifanyone seeks guidance else-where[other than the Qurn]Allah will lead him astray. It isthe rope of Allah [swt], the wisereminder, the straight path,whims would not deviate it northe tongue become confused,and the scholars cannot be fullysatisfied [i.e. still more to ex-plore].It is not worn down byrepetition nor do its wondersever ceaseHe who quotes itspeaks the truth, he who actsaccording to it is rewarded, hewho judges according to it isjust, and he who invites peopleto it [i.e. the Qurn] is [himself]guided to the Straight Path.Source: Tirmidhee no. , 2906 ] ] [Daeef - the chain isweak but the meaning is Saheeh 46 . . : . 47. scholars comment that this is morelikely the statement of Ali and notthe Prophet]47 Chapter: A Time will come when People will loose theUnderstanding of the Qurn37. On the authority of Ziyadibn Lubayd the Prophet said,.and knowledge will go [ordisappear]. He said, O Messen-gerof Allah how will knowledgeleave [disappear] whilst we readthe Qurn and our childrenread the Qurn and they willmake their children read it tillthe Day of Judgement. Hesaid, May your Mother looseyou I thought your one of themen of understanding of Madi-nah.Dont you see these Jewsand Christians reading their To-rahand Gospel but they dontpractice anything of it.Source: Ibn Majah no. - 4048[Sahih] : : : 48. 38. The Prophet Muhammadsaid, There will come a time onthe people when there will re-mainnothing of the Islam ex-ceptits [ism] name and nothingwill remain of the Qurn exceptits [rasm] outward form. Theirmasjids will be full ofpeople/very well built but willbe empty of guidance. Theirscholars will be the most evilunder the heavens; from them[fitnah] turmoil will emanatefrom them and to them will itreturn.Source: Baihaqi, Shubul Iman no.2/78848 Narrated Abdullah, that heheard a man reciting a QurnicVerse which he had heard theProphet reciting in a differentway. So he took that man to theProphet [and told him thestory]. The Prophet said, Bothof you are reciting in a correctway, so carry on reciting. The 49. Duas from the Qurn Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are theHearing, the Knowing. [2:127] Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and inthe Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from thepunishment of the Fire. [2:201] Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feetand give us victory over the disbelieving people. [2:250] Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgot-tenor erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like thatwhich You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burdenus not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardonus; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our pro-tector,so give us victory over the disbelieving people. [2:286]53 54. Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guidedus and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are theBestower. [3:8] Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive us our sinsand protect us from the punishment of the Fire, [3:16] Our Lord, we have believed in what You revealed and havefollowed the messenger so register us among the witnesses [totruth]. [3:53] Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess [committed] inour affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory overthe disbelieving people. [3:147] Our Lord, You did not create this [heavens and earth] aim-lessly;exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect usfrom the punishment of the Fire. [3:191]54 55. Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [say-ing],Believe in your Lord, and we have believed. Our Lord,so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds andcause us to die with the righteous. [3:193] Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people andappoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for usfrom Yourself a helper? [4:75] Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do notforgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be amongthe losers. [7:23] Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are theHearing, the Knowing. [2:127] Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people.[7:47]55 56. Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, andYou are the best of those who give decision [7:89] My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] frommy descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.[14:40] Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers theDay the account is established. [14:41] Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for usfrom our affair right guidance. [18:10] Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, itspunishment is ever adhering. [25:65] Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspringcomfort to our eyes and make us an example for the right-eous.[25:74]56 57. Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy andknowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followedYour way and protect them from the punishment of Hell-fire.[40:7] Our Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual residencewhich You have promised them and whoever was righteousamong their fathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed,it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.And protectthem from the evil consequences [of their deeds]. And hewhom You protect from evil consequences that Day - Youwill have given him mercy. And that is the great attainment.[40:8-9] Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us infaith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward thosewho have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind andMerciful. [59:10]57 58. Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we havereturned, and to You is the destination.[60:4] My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor whichYou have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and towork righteousness of which You will approve and makerighteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented toYou, and indeed, I am of the Muslims. [46:15] My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of thedevils. And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be pre-sentwith me. [23:97-98] My Lord, have mercy upon them [my parents] as theybrought me up [when I was] small.
