Quigley became the first man to win better than bronze at the world championships, and he boxed bril- liantly to reach the final. However, the Finn Valley ABC startlet just ran out of steam in the final losing to home favourite Zhanibek Alimhanu- ly. Quigley described the defeat as ‘heartbreaking’ but added : “I give my whole life to this sport and I know when I go away and look at it, I’ll be absolutely honoured to be the first Irish boxer ever to get this far.” The Ballybofey man set a new record by winning 32 fights in a row before the final, and he delivered huge performances in his quarter fi- nal win over Zoltan Harsca from Hungary and in the semi-final against Russian Artem Chebotarev. Glenswilly won the 2013 Radio na Gaeltachta Donegal Senior Champi- onship after an awesome second half display in the final to beat Killybegs. The fishermen made a real go of it in the first half, however, once Gary McDaid’s men got to grips with Killy- begs there was only going to be one winner and goals from Michael Mur- phy, Neil Gallagher and Ciaran Bon- ner helped them to a 3-19 to 2-6 win. Murphy’s role in the final was un- der spotlight after he lined out with the Ireland International Rules team on the Saturday night in Cavan. How- ever, he produced a mesmerising performance against Killybegs to prove his doubters wrong. “It’s football: It’s what I enjoy do- ing, what I love., and as a young fella if you were told you would play for your country and then our club in a county final, you’d take that,” said Murphy after he collected the man of the match award. Captain Paul Boyle dedi- cated their win to his clubmate Conor Boyle, who tragically lost his life before the final. Second half goals from Martin Coll and Ryan Ferry won Gaoth Dobhair the Senior Reserve championship in the curtain raiser to the senior final. St Eunan’s won Division 1 of the All County League, while Glenswilly completed an excellent month by clinching the Division 2 league with a win over neighbours Termon. St Nauls’ were crowned Division 3 champions, while Fanad Gaels joined them in winning promotion to the second tier after a win over local ri- vals Downings. Milford won the Divi- sion 4 league, by defeating Convoy. Termon were seconds from win- ning the Ulster Club Senior Ladies championship, but the Monaghan champions fought back to force a draw, and won the replay comfort- ably. Milford also lost out in the In- termediate decider to a last-gasp Watty Grahams point. Ireland destroyed Australia in the International rules winning by an ag- gregate score of 173-72. Michael Mur- phy captained Ireland to the Cormac McAnallen trophy, and he played a captain’s role alongside his county teammates Paddy McBrearty and Neil McGee. The big soccer news of the month was Peter Hutton’s resignation from Finn Harps before Harps’ victory over Athlone Town. Sean McGowan stepped into the breach to replace the Derry native. Hutton admitted that he had ‘underestimated the task.’ Harps finished the season in sixth position after a stalemate with Salthill Devon in their last game of the season. Cockhill Celtic once again got the upper hand on Drum- keen United, beating them 5-4 in an enthralling match in the Intermedi- ate cup. Mickey Rodgers’ Drumkeen led 3-1, but the Inishowen men came back to lead 4-3. Chris Kyle equalised in injury time, but his efforts were in vain, as Mark Moran struck the win- ner just as both teams looked re- signed to penalties. Letterkenny Rovers advanced to the fourth round alongside Cockhill after a 6-2 win over Bonagee, while Swilly Rovers also made it through to the next round after beating Kil- drum Tigers. Austeja Auciute won her eighth Irish title when she defeated Kayleigh McCormack in the 64kgs fi- nal at the National under 22 Champi- onships. It was the Finn Valley ABC star’s third national title of 2013. Letterkenny’s Tommy McCafferty continued his undefeated assault on the professional ranks of mixed mar- tial arts after he beat Ben Davis in front of a packed crowd at the Mille- nium Forum. Letterkenny cyclist Conor McEl- waine made a big move forward in his career by signing a top competi- ton level contract with Belgium- based team Terra Footwear. Monaghan man Gary McPhillips was the winner of the 2013 Harvest Stages Rally after a day of high dra- ma in West Donegal. St Johnston’s Bridie Lynch was one of three individuals who were in- ducted into the Paralympics Ireland Hall of fame. Jason Quigley claimed a silvermedal in the Middleweight divisionat the World Championships in Kaza-khstan.
