Greetings July 27, 2020 Dear Members and Friends: This year due to the Covid-19 pandemic our Fortieth Annual IUOE Local 94, 94A, 94B Scholarship Fund Family Picnic had to be cancelled. The Local 94 Annual Picnic is one of our favorite events of the year. It is an event enjoyed by all members, guests, and their families but also one that raises money to help support our Local 94 Scholarship Fund. Since our first picnic in 1980 we have come a long way. That first year we had approximate 300 people in attendance, now we have over 2,500. As I have said many times before, our success can only be attributed to having a great team working together to achieve one goal, to keep our Scholarship Fund vital. We want to commend all of our members for their constant support and loyalty to the Scholarship Fund. Although this year’s event was cancelled your support in this journal has helped to continue to offer scholarships to the children in our Union Family. We would also like to extend appreciation to our sister Unions, the Employers and various Business Firms for their contribution to our Journal each year. The Scholarship Fund has provided a total of 229 scholarships to Local 94 children. As of 2019 we were able to increase the number of recipients from 10 to 12 and the total award the recipients to receive from $8,000 to $10,000 each. As we have said many times, such success is not achieved by one person, and this year in particular your support of the Journal has allowed us to continue to encourage our children to pursue their educational goals. What used to be the World Trade Center is now called “Ground Zero”. It should however be renamed “Ground Hero”. There are stories of heroism that have been told and stories of heroism that will never be told. Let us tell you about our four I.U.O.E. Local 94 Heroes. John Griffin, Jr. and Charles Magee immediately responded to the emergency despite the inherent danger and assisted with the evacuation of tenants. Vito Deleo and David Williams helped tenants find their way safely out of the building and were themselves two blocks away from the Twin Towers when they made the unselfish decision to return to continue to help with the evacuation. All four are still missing but will not be forgotten. We should pray for these heroes and also pray for the silent heroes, those who have been left to go through life without their loved ones.
