Good dialysis facilities require good staff. They

should be experienced, friendly and helpful.

There should be at least one full-time registerednurse.

Be wary if your facility schedules five or sixpatients per day. This stretches resources andleads to tired, stressed and overworked staff.

Some patients have even reported being allowedto soil themselves rather than pause treatment.

Bessemer Kidney Center

In May 2013, the Fresenium-ownedBessemer Kidney Center was cited forfailing to follow infection guidelines.

In the inspection report, it was noted that theregistered nurse removed the old dressingand began cleaning and applying a newdressing to the catheter inspection withoutchanging gloves.

The inspector then found that the same

patient had previously been hospitalizedwith a catheter infecion.

The Bessemer Center was closed followingthe inspection in May, and reopened at theend of June.

Its Failing Inspections

Medicare insist that all dialysis facilities areinspected at least once ever three years,

although a 2009 study showed that one in tencenters hasnt been inspected in at least fiveyears.

Medicare can demand that facilities that fail tomeet government standards submit a correctionplan.

Facilities can be terminated from Medicare, butthis is very rare to prevent hindreing access tocare. Between 2000 and 2008, only 16 facilitieswere banned.

James McMurry FailedInspections

66-year-old James McMurry took a regularblood thinner before dialysis treatment.

In 2007, nurses discovered that his bloodflow was too slow, and administered a clotdissolving medication.

Hours after returning home, Jamesneighbor heard him banging on the wall.Paramedics found him slumped in a chair,vomiting.

James had suffered a devastating brainhaemorrhage, and had slipped into anirreversible coma by the time his family gotto him.

Doctors denied authorizing the medication,and the center was closed.

You Feel Isolated

Is your facility supportive?

Dialysis can be scary, but most facilities haveplenty of support options in place. These caninclude a social worker, dietician, exerciseclasses and relaxation classes.

If your facility does not encourage

communication between patients, or does notshare news or inspection results, it could beunderperforming.

Larry Hall A Question TooFar

51-year-old Larry Hall had attended aDaVita facility in North Carolina for over nineyears when he received a letter cancelling

all future treatments immediately.

DaVita included a helpful list of othercenters Larry could use, none of which wereDaVita. The closest was 50 miles away.

Larrys treatment was cancelled after he

challenged clinic managers on the facilitiesperformance.

Hall won a $10,000 jury award againstDaVita.
