    October 9, 2001

Mr. Emilio Peralta, WKVP-TV29Rivera St.Newtonville, Nebraska

Dear Mr. Peralta:Thank you for speaking to our class last Thursday. It was very exciting tomeet a

real television personality! We all learned a lot about how you make yourweatherpredictions. And it was fun to see some of the equipment you use.

After you left, we made a list of what we had learned. Then we set up a smallweather station outside our classroom. From now on, one student in the classwill bethe weather person every day. He or she will record weather data in ourweather book.

After a few months, we will start making graphs and charts thatshow our weatherpatterns here in Nebraska. We will use the Internet to shareour information withstudents all over the United States. Next yearsstudentswill continue our work.

As you can see, your visit has given us a lot of ideas. Thank you so much foropening our eyes to this interesting subject.

    Sincerely,

    B. J. GluckMrs. Morses Class, Oakview School

    The Voice of Nature

    FromDreamtime Heritage by A. & M. J. Roberts

An Aboriginal myth from southern Australia relates how, in the

beginning, the voice of the Ancestor spoke each day from a

great gum tree, and the tribe gathered around to listen. But as

time went by the people grew weary of hearing his words of

wisdom. One by one they turned their backs on the voice to

pursue their own pleasures, and a vast silence settled over the

whole of the land and the sea. There was no wind and the tideswere still, no birds sang, and the earth seemed to be dying. The

tribe soon wearied of the pleasures of their own making and

began to be afraid and lonely. They returned to the great tree

again and again, hoping to hear the words that would ease their

misery. And one day the voice of their Ancestor spoke again. He told them it was the last time his voice would

be heard, but that he would give them a sign. The great tree split open, a huge tongue of light came down into

its trunk, and then it closed up again. Since that time the Aboriginals have known that the voice of their

Ancestor exists in all things, and speaks to them through every part of nature.

    a. Why did the tribe traditionally gather around the great gum tree?b. Why did the people abandon this custom (stop going to the tree)?

    c. What happened to the natural world when the people broke this tradition?

    d. What feelings made the people return to the tree?

    4 Reading -- Homework Jacksons Day[ORIGINAL] DUE 09.12.2014 (Thursday)

DIRECTIONS:SAW . Use separate paper if needed.

Jackson is a golden retriever who likes to play and go on walks but hates getting a bath. Whenever he hears the

water running in the tub, he hides behind the couch and growls at his owner, Jennifer. One day, he even ran outthe front door when it was bath time. Jackson ran and ran until he found a huge mud puddle, and he jumped

right into the murky water. He was completely covered in mud. His golden fur was brown and slimy from head

to toe. He continued his journey away from home hoping to find other dogs in the neighborhood that wanted to

play. He did not find any dogs at the local park or near the elementary school where Jennifer always walked

him at night. He hoped he would at least find a cat to chase, but there were no dogs or cats in Jackson's path.

After an hour of playing, Jackson started to get hungry and decided to walk back to the house. Meanwhile at

home, Jennifer was worried and scared that Jackson might not ever come back. She looked all over the

neighborhood and had no luck finding him. She even checked with her neighbors to ask whether or not they had

seen Jackson. A while later, after Jennifer got home, she heard a bark coming from the front door. That bark

was familiar. It was Jackson! Jennifer was amazed at how filthy Jackson had gotten in the time he was gone.

Before Jackson could eat his dinner, he had to face the bath he had run away from. This time, he listened and

took his bath without any trouble. Soon Jackson was clean, but he needed a nap!

    play with?

    a. The grocery store.b. The local park.

    d. In the bathtub.

    2) What does the word familiar mean?

    a. Wellknown.b. Strange.
