How to Develop an Electronic Portfolio If you already have a print version of your professional portfolio, get it out now. It will serve as a guide to planning your electronic portfolio also. They will not be exactly the same, but they will complement one another. The 7 basic steps to creating your online portfolio:

1. Create a FREE WordPress.com website.

2. Setup your WordPress.com website.

3. Create pages for your WordPress.com website.

4. Add content to your WordPress.com website pages.

5. Reserve a domain name for your electronic portfolio website.

6. Forward and mask your domain name to your WordPress.com site URL.

7. Send your new website domain name out for others to view your new electronic portfolio.

This will give you an electronic portfolio site to look at as you go through the setup process. Online Portfolio Development Tips and Reminders

Use your home page to capture attention, create interest, and get them to click on additional pages of your site.

Be consistent with template/themes/styles/colors/fonts from page to page.

Be descriptive with your Internet page titles so viewers know what they’re looking at.

Include explanations of content wherever possible, but do not disclose employer information or any other proprietary or confidential information.

Keep your audience in mind. And keep it professional!

Never say “under construction.” Either get it finished or do not share your link until it is.

Test all site buttons and features before sending your website address out!

Put your website address on your resume, cover letter heading, business cards, and e-mail auto-signature.

Be aware of security issues on the web




Online Portfolio Development Checklist

Does the material I’ve included in my e-portfolio support my professional experience?

If I’m pursuing a career transition, have I included information to explain and support this transition?

How will the information be interpreted by the viewer?

Is the site easy to navigate to find information?

Are my page titles indicative of the content on the page?

Are the images and documents included on my website labeled and introduced with sufficient explanation?

Have I removed anything from my images or documents that contains confidential or sensitive information that should not be put on the Internet?

Have I included just the highlights (the best of the best) of my experience to pique the viewer’s interest?

Have materials been properly identified within the portfolio?

Has spelling and grammar been checked throughout the website?

Has a contact page been included with at least an e-mail address?

Do the color scheme and graphics enhance the site? Is it appropriate for my intended audience?

Have I included a web version of my resume?

Is my e-portfolio an ethical representation of me?

Have I added links to my social media sites such as Twitter or LinkedIn (if appropriate)?

Changing Your WordPress.com Site Settings to Allow Blogging




Publishing Your First Blog Post




This is what a blank blog post screen will look like:

Add your title and blog post content, then click PUBLISH or UPDATE in the upper right corner.




Choosing Blog Post Settings for Each Post Review all of the blog post settings for each post using the right hand side bar and expanding the sidebar menu options.




Configure Sharing for Your Blog Posts

You can configure your blog so that every time you publish a post, it automatically shares it on your other social media sites, too.

IMPORTANT: Be sure you have thoroughly proofed and reviewed your post BEFORE hitting publish, because the first version you publish will post to your social media sites automatically if you set this up.

Until you’re comfortable with the blogging process, you may want to manually post your blog post links on your other social media sites.
