Grow a Row Gardening Project If you have a garden, please consider planting an extra row for donation to a local food pantry or to the First Presbyterian Community Meal. If you don’t have a garden but would be willing to tend one, Grow it Forward, LLC has community garden space on South 14th Street near Monroe Elementary available to anyone willing to grow food for donation to First Presbyterian Community Meals or Peter’s Pantry or another donation site. There is additional garden space on Viebahn Street as well. Amber Daugs is CEO of Grow it Forward, so if you are interested, please contact her at [email protected]
Some pantries have refrigerator space; some don’t. Some are able to take fresh food, and some cannot. If you need help finding a food pantry to accept your donations, please ask Laura Apfelbeck at [email protected] . If you’d like to participate, your work could become a part of a state-wide initiative to connect gardeners with individuals on limited incomes, facilitating food rescue and food donation efforts. To be part of the state-wide project, growers would work with Laura Apfelbeck of FoodWIse to document and describe the number of sites and settings where produce was donated, estimate of number of people served by donated produce, as well as measure the total pounds of food donated. Of course you could also enter some of your produce in the Manitowoc County Fair or create a scrapbook documenting your efforts! Contact Laura if you are interested. Ideas: Create a salsa garden with tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, cilantro—You could even make & serve your salsa at the Community Meal Plant a pickle garden—cucumbers, dill, garlic, and onions. Maybe even different varieties? Grow an herb garden with dill, basil, cilantro, parsley, sage, chives. Offer recipes to show how to improve food flavor with fresh herbs. Design an Autumn Stew garden with root vegetables: beets, carrots, onions, rutabagas, turnips and potatoes. Perhaps a smoothie garden? Raspberries, strawberries, spinach, kale, carrots, and mint all grow well in Wisconsin.
Food Pantries need your help! We all know that herbs & spices can be used to replace salt and make food tastier, but most food pantries receive few if any herbs and spices. Some don’t even have onions & celery. Food is mighty bland without spices but spices can be expensive. Imagine spaghetti with no garlic or oregano. Chili without chili powder. Sometimes families resort to boxed meals—which are often very high in sodium and fat--because they simply don’t have those extra ingredients.
Spice it Up Food Drive, to the rescue! Would your 4-H family or club be willing to collect spices to donate? Please consider hosting a Spice it Up Food Drive. You might buy spices in bulk and package it yourself. Or you could buy spices from the dollar store. Interested? UW-Extension FoodWIse is working with area food pantries to improve heart health and support people with diabetes. Spices truly make an enormous difference in the flavor and appeal of healthy foods. If you would like some help with your project, 4-H literature can provide project information, ideas, and direction. To obtain literature for your project, go into your account in 4-H Online and select Participation and then the Project tab. You can then go to Edit for the project you want literature for and select your project material. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
11th Annual U.S. Targhee Sheep Association Starter Flock
Three Free Registered Targhee Sheep to be Awarded to Deserving Youth
The U.S. Targhee Sheep Association (USTSA) will again, for the 11th straight year, be
offering a free registered Targhee Starter flock to a deserving youth at the 2019 USTSA National
Show & Sale in Lodi, Wisconsin, July 18th-20th. In the previous ten years, the generous members of
the USTSA have awarded 16 starter flocks, totaling 52 head of sheep, and have also donated
almost $12,000 towards buyers credits for the award winners to purchase additional sheep at
USTSA national sales. The winner must be present to receive the flock and will be awarded one
(1) ewe lamb, one (1) yearling ewe, and one (1) brood ewe donated by members of the USTSA.
Each animal will be a USTSA registered animal, and at least QR in Scrapie Codon 171 genotype.
The winner will also receive a $150 credit for use toward purchase of additional animals at the
2019 national sale.
Applications, due April 1st, are now available to download at www.ustargheesheep.org
or by contacting Mardy Rutledge at the USTSA office ([email protected] or 702-292-
5715). Any young person, ages 9-17, as of January 1, 2019, whose family does not raise Targhee
sheep may apply. Applicants should possess a keen interest in the U.S. sheep industry,

human intervention, while still producing high quality lamb and wool are hallmark traits of
Targhees. Mothering ability and gentle dispositions are additional positive traits of the breed.
The U.S. Targhee Sheep Association believes in the future. The success the program has
had thus far has only affirmed it is the right thing to do for young people. Please pass the word
along to a young person you know. Visit the USTSA website at www.ustargheesheep.org for

Once we receive registration & payment, campers receive an immediate confirmation letter, followed by more information in late May/early June. *$100 if postmarked on or before May 22nd, and $150 if postmarked after May 22nd. Registrations not accepted after June 3rd and space is limited. Our department offers several scholarships for Marinette County residents. If interested, write a 200-300 word essay titled "Why I Want to Participate in Conservation Camp." Winners will be chosen based on the content of their essay. Application is required – see below! Please send essays, along with all signed registration materials, by April 19, 2019 to Anne Bartels (see back of brochure for address). Please include your name, address, & telephone number. Winners will be notified by May 10th. If you live outside of Marinette County, check with your local county land conservation office, 4H, local sportsmen’s clubs, and veterans groups. They may also offer scholarships.
This camp provides positive educational outdoor experiences, fosters an appreciation for nature, and introduces a variety of careers in natural resources and conservation. Professionals & volunteers from various agencies present programs on topics like wildlife, habitat, water quality, fisheries, orienteering, trapping, outdoor recreation safety, camping skills, and canoeing. They also serve as overnight staff and cabin leaders. Campers make new friends, participate in hands-on activities and learn new things, practice social & leadership skills, enjoy the outdoors, and just have fun! Here are some comments from previous participants:
“Very fun, you can count on me being
there next year!” “I think this is the best camp I went to.” “This was my first time coming here and
it was a blast!” “I had lots of fun and made friends.” “The cook’s food was awesome.”
