Ferry County 4-H

4-H State Forum held ~ Everett 4-H Club General Leader & State Advisory Board Member Holly Haddenham of the Lucky Horseshoe 4-H Club, 4-H Coordinator Tonia Jordan and Tech Wizards Coordinator Alisha Hill recently attended the 4-H State Forum. There they were able to learn, discuss, vote and network with Leaders and Staff during this annual conference. Workshops provided participants with opportunities to learn new skills, and hone knowledge in a wide variety of topics.

4-H Achievement Night held ~ Fairgrounds This years’ event was hosted by Lucky Horseshoe 4-H Club, to say thank you to Ferry County 4-H Leaders and Members for all they do during the 4-H year. 4-H clubs celebrated the 4-H years’ achievements at this awards program held at the Carousel building on the Ferry County Fairgrounds in Republic. 4-H members were presented with their 4-H year completion pins. 4-H volunteer leaders were also presented with 5-year incremental certificates & pins. There were display photos, trophies, ribbons and awards earned during the 4-H year. The awards dinner was provided by the Tech Wizards 4-H program.

4-H Club Annual Financial Summary Reports ~

12/31/15 ~ 4-H Office Each club is required to submit an AFSR (Annual Financial Summary Report) to the 4-H office by 12/31/15 [email protected]. If you do not have a club bank account write that on the form and return. If .00, please report .00 and return. Please make sure you keep copies of revenues and expenses. After many years of hard work, the IRS has granted Washington 4-H a GEN. To keep it we have to have 100% participation in AFSR returns. These reports will be emailed, or mailed if no e-mail, to all general leaders this month. For your 4-H Club account to remain in tax exempt status report your 990E online https://www.irs.gov/ by 3/15/16.

4-H Re-enrollment Rosters ~ 6/1/16 ~ 4-H Office Re-enrollment packets have been mailed to all general leaders. Please make any edits and additions then return to the 4-H Office [email protected]. If a leader or member in your club becomes inactive, moves out of the area, adds or deletes projects, let our office know. We have a new database this year. As the data is turned over I will only be able to send information, such as this newsletter, to those who have sent in their re-enrollment paperwork-thus making you active in the system.

4-H NE District Teen Rally held ~ Black Beach

Resort, Republic Rally Director Alisha Hill For the first time in 11 years Ferry County 4-H was able to host the NE District Teen Rally. This Rally brought together young people to share 4-H Club and county experiences, develop leadership skills and build new relationships to expand individual resources and make the 4-H program better. Annually, usually September or October, various 4-H districts across the State of Washington host a Teen Rally. There is a 4-H Teen Rally in each of the four districts: NE, NW, SE and SW. All counties and eligible youth within the districts are encouraged to participate in a weekend get-a-way. This year’s theme in Ferry County was “Rush to Teen Rally.” Rally was filled with a variety of educational workshops, a gold prospecting workshop by longtime 4-H Leader, Tom Johnson, as well as dancing by Zack and Jenelle West and a workshop “Above the Influence” by the 4-H Star Youth Coalition, Search & Rescue, and Cupcake Making to name a few of the sessions.

Teen Rally was a great opportunity for meeting 4-H youth from other counties, learning more about 4-H, listening to motivational speakers, a service project-making “suitcases” for foster youth, and a having a great deal of fun. Youth did a majority of the planning, and Leaders and Staff partnered to help coordinate, cooperate and collaborate across county boundaries. District youth representatives for State Ambassadors, and the State 4-H Advisory Board are elected at the rallies, as well. Tyler Haddenham, Ferry

County 4-H County Ambassador, also played a large role in the planning and preparation for this year’s Teen Rally.

Reporting 4-H Volunteer Hours To ensure that you are covered by WSU through the state L&I program, you must first be volunteering at a pre-approved event (approved by 4-H Coordinator) and second be reporting your volunteer hours online. It is best to do this within 24 hours of volunteer work. Doing so will also provide a central place for both you and the university to see your invaluable contribution to our community. The 2015 hours report is pictured. How Volunteers Add Hours

• Log on to http://ext.wsu.edu/volunteers/logon.aspx • Logon with your WSU Volunteer System user name and password. Emailed to you when you enrolled. • Select “Volunteers”. • Click “Enter Activity”. • Select the appropriate information from each of the dropdown lists. • Select the date on which the activity occurred. You may have to use the navigation arrows on the calendar to get to the correct month. You can enter multiple activities for the same day. However, each activity must be have a different start and end time. • Click “Save”. • After you save a record, there will be a message at the top of the page to indicate that the record was saved. At this point you may choose another menu item on the left, logout, or add a new record. If you add a new record, simply change the information needed to reflect the new activity. You may click the “Clear the Form” button to start with a blank record. If you need assistance while logging your hours, please contact our office [email protected].

Spocon Fantasy and Sci-Fi Convention held ~ Spokane Tech Wizards Coordinator Alisha Hill http://spocon.org/content/science-fiction Ferry Country Tech Wizard 4-H kids, Sawyer Wyckoff and River Wyckoff from the Wyler Family 4-H Club participated with other youth in Spokane's SpoCon Fantasy and Sci-Fi convention on Saturday, October 3, 2015. In response to the cancellation of the Ferry County Fair due to aggressive fires burning throughout the county, SpoCon offered to host the 4-H Tech Wizards children’s robotics competition as part of their Weekend with Vic Mignogna event. Ferry County 4-H coordinator, Tonia Jordan, said, “This was a group of very young youth who spent many hours with their mentors learning the engineering and programming necessary with Lego Robots.” The Ferry County 4-H youth were understandably upset when they found out the fair was cancelled and they would not be able to display their projects. Tech Wizards Coordinator Alisha Hill, said, “We are enjoying preparing mentors to educate our youth about robotics and and other Tech Wizards programs.” It’s also great to see that hard work displayed, and the SpoCon event was a perfect venue for the youth to do just that. 4-H youth were excited they had a platform with a celebrity in front of so many people. SpoCon is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that plans and hosts an annual sci-fi & fantasy themed convention, along with other events during the year. SpoCon is dedicated to literacy and education through the promotion of visual and performing arts, literature, science, gaming, and imagination, which has a direct correlation to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) that are essential to the Tech Wizards program in Ferry County. Sawyer Wyckoff presented a Minestorm EV3 R2D2 creative build from the movie Star Wars and was presented with the Best of Show award. River Wyckoff demonstrated a light saber battle between Darth Vadar and Luke Skywalker using pulleys and gears. All the kids had a great time and appreciated the opportunity to display their creative robotic engineering works to an audience in celebration of their efforts to learn more about technology and robots. Event Special Guest and celebrity Vic Mignogna presented the awards. This opportunity is made possible due to a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and the National 4-H Office through Washington State University.

Become a Mentor Adults with interest in Robotics, Digital Media, GPS, Outdoor Education and anything to do with STEM learning are needed to partner with 4-H professionals and volunteers to help deliver the program curriculum and mentor youth. Please contact Alisha Hill for more information [email protected].

Rabies Vaccinations For the first time since 2002, a pet cat in Washington has been found to have rabies. The 2-year old female cat from Chimacum tested positive on Tuesday, according to Jefferson County Public Health. The cat has been euthanized. The owner was bitten sometime in the past week. Several people, including the cat’s owner and a veterinary technician are being given rabies shots as a precaution. The most likely scenario is that the cat contracted rabies from killing or eating a bat, as bats are the most common carriers of rabies in the state. This is a reminder to keep up to date on your animals vaccinations. Washington State Veterinary Medical Association
