It is all around us in everyday life. We need technology to live and function in today’s society. This technology could be a land line telephone or a computer, and with the invention of the internet, we are connected globally with hand held devices. Schools are the institutions where students learn how to properly use this technology. The use of technology improves higher-order thinking skills, such a problem solving, critical thinking and creativity. It is imperative that students have a strong knowledge base in how to apply technology because it will be essential for their futures in this highly competitive global market place. Capital Project Investment in Technology The December capital project vote included funds to increase the efficiency of the district’s network and infrastructure. The upgrades will increase the capacity of the current system and the speed of transmission through the fiber optic cable. The project will also replace the 10 year old telephone system that is currently discontinued. The district’s wireless network will be increased as well as our ability to broadcast student announcements and stream educational programming into the classroom. Finally, we will replace 168 classroom computers and classroom Infocus projectors that are 10 years old. New York State Smart School Bond Act In addition to the capital project funds, last November, New York State voters approved a 2 billion dollar school technology bond called the Smart Schools Bond Act. Starpoint’s allocation is $1.6 million. This money can be used over many years to improve technology within the district, once the State of New York approves a district plan for the use of the funds. Over the next two to three years, Starpoint’s plan is to use one half of this money to introduce Google tablets to K through grade 2, Google Chromebooks and Google docs in grades 3 through 5, and integrate this technology by teacher or department at the Middle and High School. At the Primary Level, the Google tablets will be used to reinforce literacy and math skills for students. Upon entering the Intermediate level, students will use Chromebooks and Google docs to be introduced to “project based” learning as they work collaboratively with other students. This type of inquiry, research and group learning will continue to be taught at the Middle and High School levels. The remaining funds will be used to maintain this initiative in the district.

Capital Project Investment in Technology

The December capital project vote included funds to increase the efficiency of the district’s network and infrastructure.

New York State Smart School Bond Act

In addition to the capital project funds, last November, New York State voters approved a 2 billion dollar school technology bond called the Smart Schools Bond Act. Starpoint’s allocation is $1.6 million. This money can be used over many years to improve technology within the district, once the State of New York approves a district plan for the use of the funds.
