Dear Parents We have had such a hugely successful Term 4 with so many wonderful highlights such as the Graduation Ceremony, Parent Helper morning tea, Evening on the Green, Christmas Concerts and a large range of incursions and excursions. As such I thank all staff for their support in making this school the very special place it is. We have fabulous staff, wonderful students and a very supportive community all of which are enablers for an exemplary school.

Graduation Evening Once again we experienced a very memorable evening with our Year 6 students at graduation. The evening was attended by close to 400 audience members. The highlight of the evening was certainly the students’ performance of their farewell song and then watching our very caring staff get up on stage to dance with the students. Well done to all. I wish our Year 6 students a wonderful journey ahead as they enter the next phase of their schooling.

First Place in the Gosnells Safe Kids Award For the second year running we have been successful in winning first place in the Gosnells Safe City Community Kids award. This year the school showcased the work we have done in supporting students and families to be cyber-safe. This has included the development of our cyber safety programme by the Alanah and Madeleine foundation and completion of a range of webinars by the office of E-Safety. These programmes have greatly contributed to the safety of our students. Our primary aim has been to assist students to develop problem solving skills for the many problems that social media can pose. At our last assembly we were fortunate enough to have the City of Gosnells Deputy Mayor Teresa Lyons present our school with a plaque and a $1000 cheque. We also had the local newspaper out to write an article on this so look out for this in the coming weeks. Parkerville Programme Parents are advised that we will no longer be running the Parkerville Counselling programme at Campbell Primary School. This decision was made through the School Board. Parents are still very able to access counselling for their children if required. This can be done through your regular GP. Campbell Primary School works under the KidsMatter Primary Mental Health and Wellbeing framework. KidsMatter provides the methods, tools and support to help our school work with parents and carers, health services and the wider community to nurture happy, balanced kids. As part of this initiative Campbell Primary School has a KidsMatter Action

team consisting of parents, our school psychologist, teachers and executive team members, who meet on a regular basis. The Highway Heroes programme is an evidence-based, whole school initiative that aims to teach our students the importance of resilience and problem solving as tools to aid their social and emotional learning. We also have a ‘KidsMatter Information Hub’ accessible at school assemblies and events that is regularly stocked with resources for parents. For your interest, we have attached a copy of this month’s focus, Good Values Guide Good Behaviour. More information sheets can be downloaded by following this link: http://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/primary.

Share the Dignity

A huge thank you to Sam Roper and her team of helpers for making an amazing 22 bags full of essential women’s items (and 4 teenager bags) to donate to the Share the Dignity Appeal. Campbell staff and parents donated useful items to fill the bags, such as shampoo, sanitary products, toothpaste, soap, unworn jewellery and more to brighten the Christmas season for Perth ladies in need. We are very appreciative for the large amount of donations and time Sam gave to complete our Share the Dignity appeal. See https://www.sharethedignity.com.au/itsinthebag.html for more information. MCUI Celebration Day

On Thursday 9 November 2017, Campbell Primary School participated in the annual Music Count Us In Celebration Day! The day is celebrated nationally, where right across the country – all registered schools sing the same song, on the same day, at the same time. Five public school students were selected to work with Program Ambassador John Foreman and the 2017 Program Mentor, Taylor Henderson. All classes worked hard to learn the song and actions lead by Miss Bosman and Ms Kidd. The Campbell Choir did an outstanding job leading the singing on the day and it was wonderful to see so many smiling faces singing the song ‘Shine Together’ with pride. The song sends a strong message of acceptance, determination and unity. Congratulations to all students on a fantastic performance!

Science Science in Term 4 is centred on Earth and Space and changes to Earth’s surface.

Year 1 – The Year 1 students have looked at changes in landscape due to constructive change and natural change. For natural change, they have drawn the early development of tomato and cucumber plants from the year 2 vegetable gardens. They will observe these plants in a couple of weeks’

time to document the changes that have occurred. Many students are drawing excellent diagrams to explain their work. This is from Isabel in ELA 04. Year 3 – The Year 3 students are learning about the Earth and its relationship to the sun and moon in the Solar system. They have shown how night and day occurs, using their play-doh Earths and balloon suns. They are now using the same props to understand how the Earth acquires its seasons. In this photograph Johan of LA 25 is explaining to Jayden how the tilt of the Earth on its axis, as it orbits the sun, causes seasons.

Year 4 – The Year 4 students are studying ‘weathering’ and ‘erosion’ at present and have performed some fun experiments that relate to these geological changes. Lana, Ajay and Kaylani of LA 20 look at chemical weathering of a ‘rock’ and Breanna and Melvina of LA 20 demonstrate ‘erosion’ caused by wind!

Year 5 – The Year 5’s have studied planets within the Solar system and are documenting various facts and figures about them, such as composition, size, length of time to rotate on axis, time to orbit the sun etc. Their next challenge is to use the grassed area outside the Science room to map a planetary size and distance comparison model, to show the diameter and relative distance from the sun of each planet in the solar

system!

Year 6 – The Year 6 students are researching geological events and have started looking at the Earth’s crust and how it is ‘broken’ into different sized pieces called tectonic plates. They have discovered that the boundary point, at which tectonic plates meet, causes major problems. The plates can push against each other, or ride under or over each other and this disturbance can lead to volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and/or tsunamis. The diagram shows the ‘ring of fire’ which is basically the boundary or meeting point of the Pacific plate and other major tectonic plates. The ring of fire is home to 75% of all active volcanoes and is also the area where 90% of all earthquakes occur.

Partnerships with Parents

Classroom parent information session to be held in 2018 Term 1 Week 2

Year 6 Camp: Woodman Point In Week 7 the Year 6 students went to camp at Woodman Point. It was so much fun and we made lots of new friendships. We had raft building, beach sports, sandcastle competitions, rock climbing, bike riding, search and rescue games, flying fox and so much food! On the first night we went into our groups for a game called ‘Escape from Quarantine’. As a team we had to locate five items to help us escape. But if we were caught in the spotlight by the teachers we had to return to the dining hall for five minutes. On the second night we had a movie night in our pyjamas. We watched ‘Night in the Museum’ and had popcorn and hot chocolate. We left the camp with awesome memories and know that next year’s Year 6 students are in for fun and adventure.

P&C News

What a finish to the year! We had a wonderful time with our gorgeous Kindy students celebrating the year with their disco last Wednesday evening. Such confidence on the dance floor from our youngest students! They will certainly be ready for our junior discos next year as they head into Pre-primary! Extra special thanks to the wonderful Kindy teaching team for all of their help and enthusiasm on the night. Thanks to everyone who supported our fundraising efforts at the Evening on the Green. Our sausage sizzle, drinks and ice cream stand was very successful and our raffle was a hit! Congratulations to all of our winners. Also thank you to the businesses that sponsored prizes - Mr Terry Healy MLA who donated the bike, Adventure World, Inflatable World (thank you Miss Goodsell in PP for arranging these!), Bounce Cannington, Triassic Playcentre Canning Vale and also Games World in Carousel who

supplied us with a generous assortment of board games. Finally, thank you to all of the volunteers who have assisted in events this year, and to the hard working team of parents that make up our P&C. We are so extremely lucky to have your constant ideas and enthusiasm - because of you we have managed to raise over $33,200 for our school for 2017. Amazing work team!! Leonie Gurr President of P&C
