HALAKHIC CORNER Q: Why do we blow the Shofar during the month of Elul? A: The Aruch HaShulchan (581:1), authored by Rabbi Yechiel Michel HaLevi Eptstein (1829-1908) quotes the Pirkei D’Rabi Eliezer who says that hearing the shofar blast is meant to prevent us from sinning. When Moshe first went up to Mount Sinai to receive the Luchot, the Jewish people miscalculated the days he was gone and consequently ended up committing the sin of the golden calf. When it came time for Moshe to re-ascend Mount Sinai to receive the second set of Luchot, the shofar was sounded so that the Jewish people would not miscalculate the days he was gone and commit another sin. Therefore, just as the shofar was sounded when Moshe went up Mount Sinai to prevent the Jewish people from making another mistake, so too we sound the shofar to prevent us from sinning nowadays. Furthermore, the Aruch HaShulchan writes that the shofar is associated with repentance as the verse states, “When a shofar is sounded, do the people not take alarm?(Amos 3:6). Since the month of Elul is fit for repentance as it is the last month of the year and right before the Days of Judgment, it makes sense to blow the shofar to awaken us to repent.

HALAKHIC CORNER Q: Why do we blow the Shofar during the month of

Elul?

A: The Aruch HaShulchan (581:1), authored by Rabbi

Yechiel Michel HaLevi Eptstein (1829-1908) quotes

the Pirkei D’Rabi Eliezer who says that hearing the

shofar blast is meant to prevent us from sinning.

When Moshe first went up to Mount Sinai to receive

the Luchot, the Jewish people miscalculated the days

he was gone and consequently ended up committing

the sin of the golden calf. When it came time for

Moshe to re-ascend Mount Sinai to receive the

second set of Luchot, the shofar was sounded so that

the Jewish people would not miscalculate the days he

was gone and commit another sin. Therefore, just as

the shofar was sounded when Moshe went up Mount

Sinai to prevent the Jewish people from making

another mistake, so too we sound the shofar to

prevent us from sinning nowadays. Furthermore, the

Aruch HaShulchan writes that the shofar is associated

with repentance as the verse states, “When a shofar

is sounded, do the people not take alarm?” (Amos

3:6). Since the month of Elul is fit for repentance as it

is the last month of the year and right before the Days

of Judgment, it makes sense to blow the shofar to

awaken us to repent.

DAVENING @ HOME Minhagim and Halakhot

Shabbat Parashat Shoftim

August 21-28, 2020

By Rabbi Elazar Muskin

During the Covid-19 crisis, please use the following guide

if you are davening without a Minyan.

Friday August 21st - Rosh Chodesh Elul

• In Shacharit – remember to insert Ya’aleh V’yavo in the Amida.

• Recite Half Hallel with Brakhot.

• Do not say Tachanun.

• Omit LaMenatzeach between Ashrei and U’va L’Tziyon.

• Remove your Tefillin and put them away before starting Musaf.

• After reciting the Shir Shel Yom say Borchi Nafshi and Tehilim chapter 27, L’David

Hashem.

• From the Second day of Rosh Chodesh we encourage everyone to recite five chapters of

Tehilim daily (except on Shabbat and Rosh Hashanah) proceeding accordingly through

the entire Book of Tehilim, concluding on Erev Yom Kippur. When reaching the day of

chapter 116 we recite only chapters 116-118. On the next day (which is Erev Rosh

Hashanah) we recite Chapters 119 and 120. On Erev Yom Kippur with the conclusion of

the entire Book of Tehilim one should recite the Tefilah said when finishing the entire

book of Tehilim.

• Early Mincha no later than 6:00 PM. Earliest candle lighting is at 6:10 PM.

• If one accepts Shabbat before Shkiah (7:33 PM), candles should be lit no later than 7:15

PM and Mincha should begin no later than 7:20PM.

• In Maariv after Aleynu recite Tehilim chapter 27, L’David Hashem.

Shabbat August 22nd – Parashat Shoftim

special Haftorot of comfort before Rosh Hashana. It is from Isaiah (51:12-52:12).

• Skip both chapters of Y’kum Purkan and the Mi Sheberach. They are said only when

davening with a Minyan.

• Recite the Mi Sheberach for the IDF and the Tefilah for Medinat Yisrael.

• On Monday and Thursday recite the longer version of Tachanun just like we do if we had

a Minyan and were reading the Torah.

• Rabbi Soloveitchik Z”L was of the opinion that when saying Tachanun even when a Sefer

Torah isn’t present, one should still fall on one’s arm and recite the opening chapter just

like the way we do when davening inside a Shul.

• In Shacharit after reciting the Shir Shel Yom recite Tehilim chapter 27, L’David Hashem.

• During Chodesh Elul we encourage everyone to recite five chapters of Tehilim daily

• When starting Shabbat early remember to repeat the full Shema after 8:09 PM.
