    EXPERIENCE SALFORDS-Tine & C-Shank Cultivators - Models from 12 to 62 8200 Tandem fl ex-trail plow

Every Salford plow uses durable frames with 8x8 main beams that are built to last. The industry leading under frame and fore-aft clearance means your Salford plow is almost impossible to plug, keeping you in the drivers seat to cover more acres per hour.

Strength, durability and performance...Are standard features on Salford fi eld cultivators. Hydraulic self leveling frames, and fi ne adjust single point depth control are standard features. Capped, all tubular steel frames add to the strength of the machine. Fewer hinge points greatly reduce wear on Salford cultivators lowering maintenance costs over the life of these durable machines.

    ... recover faster from freshening.

When something works, I stick with it. Thats the kind of great experience Ive had with Udder Comfort. Our SCC average has been 125,000, what more can I say? notes Bill Haak about his 100-cow grazing dairy and diversifi ed farm near Gentry, Arkansas.

Haaks dairy roots go back to boyhood on his late fathers Arizona dairy and generations earlier in Holland. As the 2010 Arkansas Farmer of the Year, Haak is an innovator.

I was fi rst in our area to start using Udder Comfort 5 or 6 years ago. I kept reading about it, but I was skeptical, he recalls. I bought some to try on a cow with fl akes in her milk. On the third day, the difference was night-and-day. By being faithful to see that it gets applied after each milking for 3 to 4 days, we see good results.

We also have less stress because it can be used without a milk withhold.

Udder Comfort is great for fresh cows with swelling. We put it on and edema is gone. Cows become comfortable and recover faster from freshening.

When a cow feels better, she eats better, milks better and does better.

For external application to the udder only after milking, as an essential component of udder management. Always wash and dry teats thoroughly before milking.

If you farm in Wisconsin (or Minnesota-for that matter) you know that although it may say spring on your calendar, it might not nec-essarily be that way when you walk outside. Two weeks ago I was bundled to the hilt just to be outside to sort my hoof trimming cows, and the calendar said it was the rst day of spring. There is still snow in the forecast for this week and the few remaining piles of snow are surrounded by mud moats to every little boys delight. Despite all of this, spring is trying to arrive. The birds have been very vocal the last few days, a welcome sound as I walk to the barn in the sunlight at night. There are bits of green grass attempt-ing to make their presence known around the lawn. But, perhaps the most de nite sign on a farm that spring is de nitely here is mud. Not just a puddle here or there or a little wet spot in front of something, mud is everywhere. One has to look past the lovely brown stuff to remember that soon it will all break way to

beautiful green pastures and lawns. A true sign on our farm that spring has arrived is the mountains of sand that get piled behind the barns in anticipation on road bans

being put on. The piles must whisper in a special little boy language to Ira and Dane, climb me, climb me, its so very high at the top. I do not hear this special sound when I walk past them like they do. The piles are covered in plastic to keep the sand dry, not as if that slows down two adventur-ous boys. It truly did look like tons of fun, as they climbed up one side and slid down the other backwards on their bel-lies, into a soft padding of sand at the bottom. However, it is not

as fun if you are the mom that has to maneu-ver all over the pile with duct tape to patch up little boy foot-holes. Alas, fun while it lasted. Mud puddles speak little boy language as well on our farm. Dane asks me daily why he still has to wear his snow pants to the barn, I just tell him now they are mud-pants. Ira

spent his spring break playing in the mud with Dane, making both of them pretty darn happy. They, of course, have brought their bikes out of the shed, because as I may have mentioned before, bikes are the best thing as far as get-ting dirty in mud puddles are concerned. I can wash their mud-caked clothes in the morning when we are done with chores, but really there is no point. By seven at night they look ex-actly the same. Now that the garage doors are open on the freestall barns, the cows are watching like hawks for any gate that might be open, so they can gather all of their friends and make a run for the spongy lawn. Luckily, this has only happened twice (so far) and only a few cows, not an entire group of one hundred plus. Its rather funny when cows get out; they usu-ally seem to cause a ruckus with all the other animals. Its almost as if they are tattling on them from inside their pens as they bellow and run crazy within their con nes, wishing they could join the escapees. Those sounds are a dead giveaway that something isnt right nearby. After selling three truckloads of well-fed steers, we moved some more up to the big pen yesterday. Ordinarily we would have wished for a frosty morning when the ground would have supported their heavy hooves, but instead we built a makeshift fence involving calf panels and posts on one side and the trac-tor and mixer, two trucks, the manure spreader and tractor, and the end loader on the other. It worked like a charm and we ended up with only an eight foot wide chunk of tore up lawn versus the whole lawn looking like a mess. Once again all of the cows went wild with jealousy that the steers got to be outside and not them. On April Fools Day morning I was greeted by a lively little pair of heifer twins as I walked in the barn. That is a pretty good start to the month I would say. Our luck had worn off by April fourth. I popped up to the barn just to check on a cow and head for home,

and ended up armpit deep searching for the head on a calf that we could only nd the twofront feet. Peter, Stacy and I all tried with allof our might, but the best we could do wastouch an ear, not nearly enough to pull a calfshead around to the correct birth position. PlanB call the vet. Dad was on his way homeand had hoped we would get it out by the time he got here, but not a chance. By nine oclock the decision was made a C-section it wouldbe. I put Dane and Ira to sleep on couches inthe house and called Tony for help, because the little bit of muscle Stacy and I providedto assist this operation would not be enough. It was some quality family bonding time as always; Stacy and I were the nursemaids, run-ning to ll syringes or buckets up, holding therope and taking pictures; Peter was surgical gloved up to help hold the uterus; and Tony had plastic sleeves on to push the calf back in, and then help Peter and Dad pull it out andup. Three hours later the calf was out, the tiredcow was fully sewn up and we all got to go to bed. As the April showers pound against mywindows, I know it will be a muddy day on the farm today, but it will make the owers grow. Dane points out to me every day withsuch contagious excitement that the daffodilsare growing taller and crocuses are opening. I think he has it right, though. We need to focus on the little things growing, like green grass, owers and buds on trees, and just remem-ber that although mud can be a headache andApril can be crazy, its these little signs of new life, calves and owers, that keep us all goingas farmers. Jacqui, her dad, sister, and brother milk550 cows and run 1,000 acres of crops in the northeastern corner of Vernon County, Wis.Her children - Ira (5) and Dane (3) - farm with her while her husband, Keith, works on a grain farm. She loves to cook, quilt and gar-den and wishes there were more hours in theday to get it all in. Farming and teaching oth-ers about farming are her passions.

CowScoutS is a new form of activity monitoring, backed by the equipment and service

expertise of GEA Farm Technologies. A leg or neck tag measures activity and sends

data to a wireless receiver. In turn, activity alerts are sent to your computer or mobile

device. With lower installation requirements, CowScoutS is less expensive and easier

to implement in any size operation. Reduce labor and increase your herds reproductive

performance. From cow to cloud to you know now with CowScoutS.
