  • Brief

The brief assigned to the cohort was to design a 5-week pop up residency for the clothing of Comme des Garcons founder Rei Kawakubo. Given the site in Venice Italy, the Scuola di San Rocco,we were required to choose either the menswear or ready to wear to be displayed in our interior space. We were required to design the visual merchandising, brand merchandis-ing, signage, clothing display (hanging + folded), accessories display, fitting rooms, point of sale, lighting, furniture, hardware and storage.

How research framed the idea through development

With thorough research into the historical context of Venice and the Scuola di San Rocco, my partner and I extracted the concept of divulge, meaning to openly discuss private and sensitive pieces of information. We believed that the paintings of that were inside the Scu-ola of Tintoretto utilized elements of light, direction, line and colour to both hide and reveal sensitive narrative and pieces of information.

Design idea/ Review of resulting works

Divulge is a space that aims to confront the viewer with the ceremony of death in its raw state. It follows closely to the confronting emotion seen in Comme Des Garcons ceremony of separation. The inevitable cycle of life and death seems ever more apparant in this runaway show .The space aims to bring the consumer through a personal journey of physical death into the spiritual soul taking inspiration from the processes of cremation. There are six key stages to the space. Stage 1: involves the preparation phase, where the consumer enters the space they will experience a tactile and sensual release of white mist signifying the beginnings in the preparation for cremation. Stage 2: is the shattering of physical body, a personal tactile experience for the consumer, where charcoal, which is representative of the physical body (bones) is shattered by whoever walks over the stage. This is part of traditional processes of dismembering body parts and shattering of bone, which is essential in crema-tion. Stage 3: Ceremony of separation. From the beginning charcoal is used to represent the human condition in the processes of death. The densities decrease until the charcoal opens up to present the pieces of Commes ready to wear. This is representative of the spiritual soul that has been released from the processes of cremation and signifies to the consumer (you have now been released from your physical existence). After this visual, you can now try on your spiritual soul. Stage 4: Gathering of ashes: Here you will receive your items from the ashes Stage 5: Complete Ascension The consumer is now forced to climb the stairs in order to change for the experience of trying on their new soul in a higher place. Stage 6 Packaging and wrapping: After trying on their new soul consumers are confronted with a beautifully grotesque range of packackaging forms, very subtly hinting the dismemberment of the body, (hair, skin, bone)

  • DIVULGE2nd Iteration

Design idea/ Review of resulting works

The 2nd Iteration of Divulge introduces lighting design to commu-nicate the project. In this phase I looked into other forms of death procession such as the sky burial. The sky burial was a traditional Tibetan ceremony that was utilised to confront death in its most raw state. They would dismember the body in the outdoors and leave the carcass for the vultures to feed on. They believed the body was an open vessel and that the vultures would bring the soul closer to the heavens. I focused on similar ideas with divulge one however there were new stages to the death procession. This space focused intently on the ideas of physical dismemberment and seen in the Tibetan rituals as a way of confronting death openly and seeing the impermanece of life. The space focused on utilising materials and colour palette that resembled flesh and bone.Similarly to the 1st iteration of Divulge, the space focused on bringing the viewer through an experience of death procession, from physical to spiritual. The new space was sequenced entry point, shattering of charcoal, shatter display, flesh display, black curtain display, graveyard disply, stair, change room, point of sale and exit. Lighting consisted of lightbox illuminescents, spotlighting, recessed downlights and led strip panelling. The ideas of the front merchandise displays were to simulate the processes of dismemberment. The flesh display gives the feeling of human touch, the shatter of shattering the bone and the black curtain display opens int he same way a Tibetan rips into the carcass. This is again shown through the change rooms and throughout the spaces.

Design idea/ Review of resulting works

The 3rd iteration tracks back to improving on the 1st iteration of Divulge with some problems with the 2nd iterations circulation and communication techniques. The circulation has been improved and new structures and processes have been introduced to enhance the space for the 3rd iteration. Two main walls made of cages have been introduced to show a change in densities both creating direction from the entry point and creating a spiritual effect of ascension for the visitor. Cages have been designed so they can be attached and reattached to create a solid wall system. A new flooring system has been introduced to provide dry ice and heat which replicates the crematory experience. Charcoal suspension has also been redeveloped with translucent nylon wire as suspension support for the pieces of charcoal. The gathering of ashes process is now available with merchandise display and changing rooms have been designed to show the spiritual ascension of the ash. Changing rooms have also been deliberately elevated over the space to accentuate the full ascension phase. This project has been a way to effectively visualise the effect that charcoal can have to show spiritual ascension.

  • SANCTITY

    Brief

The brief assigned to the cohort involved designing a Venetian feast for the trustees of the Venice Biennale. This was to be a one-night course dinner for 30 invited guests given the same site of the Scuola di San Rocco. The menu assigned to complement our feast was to be the menu of Cristoforo da Messibugo for the Farrarese banquet of the house of Este of 24 January 1529. We were required to design dining furniture, lighting, dining hardware, objects for food and drink service, cloak storage, service kitchen with meat carving station, service tables, waiters station, storage and bathrooms.

How research framed the idea through development

My partner and I researched into areas such as the sin of gluttony, self-interest and topics surrounding overindulgence. We believed that the banquet of 1529 was an expression of rebellion and excessive power with complete disregard for the Catholic Church and the re-ligious contexts of its time. We also found these reoccuring themes in the Venice Biennale, as the exhibition was one of self-benefit and lack of environmental concern.

Design idea/ Review of resulting works

Sanctity is a space that aims to restore Catholic ritual to create an individual that is sanc-tified and holy in the eyes of the church no longer a sufferer of sin. Our space features a large entry screen, which resembles the story of Adam and Eve with the idea of presenting free will to the diner and letting them realise their self-indulgent habits. We then proceed to the dining space, which is all about control and ritual experience. This is a physical progression, which features periods of fasting (singular portion, bento style), periods of feasting (sharing and eating within limitation) and periods of sharing meals as intimate and close experiences (taking away the focus on self, passing down of plates.)

Our design featured a material progression in the attempt of creating new and holy people. This was shown through the progression of brass to silver to gold in the cutlery, which in the Catholic Church symbolized refinement. These ideas were shown again with the increasing complexities of shapes from single forms to complex forms in the napkins and the increasing value of materiality from sackcloth to linen and finally silk.

  • REBIRTH

    Brief

The brief assigned to the cohort involved utilizing pinterest and visual imagery to for-mulate key design ideas for an interior response. We were given 235 Devonshire Street in Surry Hills as our site and the Catholic Church of Saint Peters as our client. The client required an intelligent interior response to cater for the social context of Surry Hills and its day and nightlife.

How research framed the idea through development

Through thourough research into the client I developed key issues surrounding the con-text of Surry Hills. I identified Surry Hills as a diverse context full of cultural complexity that needed an area to find a sense of self and inner peace. I believe that the disruptive nature of suburban life deeply affected those living in the area. Thus my space focused on providing complete physical and spiritual relaxation and renewal. The intent was to create a one night contemporary spa and dining experience. A space where we could find our true selves again.

Design idea/ Review of resulting works

Through research into church of Saint Peters I found and increasing interest in to the sacraments of Roman Catholicism which drove my design forward. These sacraments allowed spiritual sanctification, purification and renewal of those who engaged in such ritualized ceremonies. A sacrament referred to a significant Christian ritual that was taken place as a ceremony in order to receive the grace of God. It was a complete renewal of ones mind, body and soul through the belief that our sins and old ways were destroyed and purified into the creation of a new soul. The space focused on the 3 key sacraments of initiation, which in the Catholic Church were key ceremonies to be accepted as new Christians. These include Baptism, Confirmation (Anointment) and Holy Communion (Eucharist). Elements of design include a cleansing space (Baptism), a massage space (Anointment), and a dining area (Communion). The idea was that as patrons go through these experiences not knowing they have spirtual meaning, they are being purified in body and spirit. The cleansing space features a mineral pool and rain rooms offering full baptismal immersion or half immersion (sprinkling). Massage rooms allow intelligent and oderly circulation to and from other spaces. The glass walls and curtains react with night and day providing both translucency and privacy. The dining room provides a theatrical dining experience with an archipelago design allowing a socially connected experience. Diners select their meats and vegetables from the minimarket to be cooked in front of them by a chef and then proceed to public or private seating areas. There is also a separate wine, cheese and bread tasting bar. This is to replicate the experience of Holy Communion in the church where wine and bread is received in a theatrical and orderly fashion. After receiving dinner there is a series of bedrooms for the overnight stay.

The faithful are born anew by baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of confirmation and recive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life

The dove is a symbol of peace andnew beginnings.
