Although many people think that London is the capital of Britain, London is only the

capital of England. The other countries in Great Britain are Scotland and Wales, and

they each have their own capital cities, Edinburgh and Cardiff. Let's look at one of these

cities, Edinburgh.

Edinburgh has been the capital city of Scotland since the 15th century. Its name comes

from Edwin, a king of ancient Northumbria. It is one of the most beautiful cities in

Europe. There are two reasons for its beauty: one is because it is built on hills and

valleys, and the other is because Georgian and Victorian architects in the 19th century

built beautiful buildings there.

Edinburgh is easy to get to by rail, road, air and sea, and is the most popular tourist

destination in Britain after London. There are lots of things to see and do there. Perhaps

it is for its castle that Edinburgh is most famous, but there are many other sights to visit.

In the 16th century James IV built the Palace of Holyroodhouse there and now it is the

residence of the Queen and the royal family when they visit Edinburgh. It is usually

open to the public. Edinburgh has also become very famous for its cultural festival

which takes place every August.

1 Can you get to Edinburgh by boat?

2 Which famous person stays at the Palace of Holyroodhouse?

It gets 71.86% of its money from sponsors and 8.63% from the members of the organization. Members choose the amount of money they want to give. The Fundación does a lot of work in Anantapur, which is one of the poorest areas in India. People suffer extreme poverty because there is very little water. There are different projects to help the population in the areas where they are needed most. There are environmental projects to fight against the desert, to obtain land for food and to give jobs to the people who live in the area. For example, they have planted more than six million trees, including fruit trees. They also help people when there is no rain and no food so people stay and do not move to a different area. They also run school projects. For example, they have 1,597 schools and 1,908 teachers for about 86,000 primary school students and 49,000 secondary school students a year. Health is another problematic area. The organization has also built four hospitals. People in this area have no money to travel to see doctors or nurses so they don't have to pay. There are 22 doctors, 81 nurses and 675 health workers working in health projects in the area. 1 Why is Anantapur very poor? _____________________________________________ 2 How much do people in Anantapur pay to see the doctor? _____________________________________________ 3 How much money does each member give the organization? _____________________________________________ 4 How many schools does the organization help? _____________________________________________ 5 Where does the organization get its money from? _____________________________________________ 6 How many trees has the organization planted in Anantapur? _____________________________________________ 7 How many nurses work in the organization's hospitals? _____________________________________________ 8 Where is Anantapur? _____________________________________________ Answer Key:
