My Dear People, Today’s theme on the Readings: MID-LENT CHECK-IN God says to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you . . . The L , the God of your [ancestors], the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:14, 15). As Jesus would later say, God is not a God of the dead, but of the living, and so we believe that the dead will one day rise. At this midpoint of Lent, we pause to consider how our repentance is leading us to the Resurrection, to our reunion with the great “I AM.” Part of our repentance involves working to secure justice for all and helping our neighbor to live in God’s ways. We encourage each other and nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener of today’s Gospel, who tells the owner of the orchard that he will nurture the tree, fertilize it, and perhaps it will bear fruit. As Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert, the Church traditionally fasts during Lent. A form of bodily prayer, fasting and abstinence in union with other Christians reminds us of our utter dependence on and love for God. A gesture of repentance, fasting is symbolic of a change of heart as

we turn away from sin to live in fidelity to the Gospel. Lenten Regulations: Fasting: Ages 18-59 fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day, with no snacking between meals. Abstinence: Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.

Good Sunday to you all on this Third Sunday of Lent. During these 40 days, as we tune down our attention to the world, we can focus

more on becoming that better version of ourselves, the self that God created us to be. I like to think of it as mini-retreat for spiritual

growth. As always, the library is here with many great materials to assist us on this pilgrimage. Today, however, I want to turn your attention to yet another terrific resource that is made available by our parish to enlighten, educate, and inspire us during Lent and

beyond. I am speaking of Formed, the absolutely incredible on-line storehouse of outstanding Catholic materials: audio, audio/visual

and digital-print. If you have not yet discovered Formed, I urge you to tour the site today. Go to www.stmirvine.formed.org. There you may register and begin to explore. Their inventory includes feature

films, eBooks, video-based study programs, and audio presentations. Currently they are featuring special programs for Lent. Thanks go to Fr. John and Janice La Velle, our Director of Adult Faith Formation for making this available to us. Think of Formed as an extension of the library that is available 24/7 in English and Spanish. Continue the journey, 24 days remain.

I have come to lead them into a land flowing with milk and honey

Heavenly Father, Thank you for watching over the people of

Saint Thomas More Parish and helping us to Believe and Grow Together.

May everyone who visits our church feel welcome and may the beautiful surroundings and joy from our parish fill the hearts and spirits of all. As we

build our new church in your honor, we ask you Lord to open our eyes to your countless gifts and, with a spirit of gratitude, help our community to make a

joyful return to you. St. Thomas More pray for us.

Amen.

FLU SEASON ETIQUETTE

With the arrival of the cold and flu season, we thought we would provide some helpful guidelines for your

participation in the Liturgy. If you are sick, please stay home. Please remember that it is not a sin to miss Mass because you are sick. If you are attending Mass, please

be understanding if your neighbor is choosing not to shake hands. A simple gesture like a smile or bow of the

head would be appropriate to demonstrate the mutual charity celebrated at that time during Mass. During this

season, please strongly consider receiving the Eucharist in the hand only. Receiving the Eucharist under both

species is up to the individual. It is important to remember, however, that Christ is truly and completely

present under each of the sacramental signs of either bread or wine. Therefore, if you are ill, please consider

refraining from the cup during this flu season.

The Lord is kind and merciful

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Hollywood has given us an image of Moses slipping off his shoes before a burning bush. God has just called Moses by name, and so that Moses doesn’t miss the meaning of this breakthrough in human history, God requires that all barriers to the experience be eliminated. If you’ve ever tried to maneuver barefoot across hot sand, or pick your way along a rocky beach, you know how sensitive feet can be. Within the Church, there are religious orders with a custom of going barefoot, not merely to show poverty, but to be an outward sign of a desire for connection with creation, a desire to go through life alert to what God is doing. In early days, when reconciliation was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime possibility, penitents often went barefoot for a long period of time as a sign of their conversion. Even today, people follow an ancient practice of slipping off their shoes to walk in the procession to the cross on Good Friday. It is striking that the first use of our newly‑scrubbed feet from Holy Thursday night is to walk resolutely in the footsteps of Christ to the cross. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
