LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION Pope Francis created something of a stir last month when he praised the newer French translation of

the Lord’s Prayer, which replaces “do not submit us to temptation” with “do not allow us to enter into temptation” (“Et ne nous soumets pas à la tentation” and “ne nous laisse pas entrer en la tentation”). He suggested in an interview that the translation of the Our Father be updated in other languages as well. Battle lines began to form! How dare he suggest that we change such an age-old prayer! However you might feel about the possibility of a change, I want to take a moment to briefly consider the Latin and the Greek of the Our Father, as found in Matthew and Luke, to be better able to appreciate the concerns of the Holy Father about misinterpretation, and the concerns of those like myself who want to keep the traditional rendering.

The Mass in English is a translation of what is called the “typical version,” which is in Latin. Although Mass is now celebrated in most places in the vernacular – the language spoken by the people – the official, or typical, language of the Mass is Latin. In fact, it is the stated intention of the Church (unrealized in the United States) that the faithful learn by heart some of the Mass parts in Latin, above all the Pater Noster. The Latin text of the petition we are considering states: “Et ne nos inducas in tentationem.” Literally in English: “And lead us not into temptation.” But is that what Jesus really said when he taught his disciples how to pray?

The first thing to consider is that Jesus spoke Aramean, but the Gospel is written in Greek. We do not have the exact words of Christ. One may try to reconstruct what he said in Aramaic, as many have done, but one could never be absolutely sure that these were his exact words. This should not concern us, however, since the text inspired by the Holy Spirit was written in Greek. God’s revelation comes to us in the Greek of the common people in the time of the apostles. The two key words of the second-to-last petition of the Our Father are exactly the same in the original language of Matthew and in Luke – eisenenkēs and peirasmon. They mean “to bring in, to lead into” and “temptation, test.” Thus, the Greek actually says, “and not bring (or lead) us into temptation.” If you want a literal translation of the inspired text both the traditional and the new translations of the French are poor, while the English translation seems to fit the Greek of the Gospels exactly. But remember, Francis first learned his prayers in Spanish, which version of the Our Father is similar that of the modern French: “No nos dejes caer en la tentación,” – “Do not let us fall into temptation.” Maybe the Italian version annoys the Pope – at the Vatican he has to say it every day – for like the English it preserves the literal words of the New Testament Greek.

The beef of the Holy Father is that some versions of the Our Father seem to indicate that God could lead us into temptation. Since God is all good, such an assertion would be contrary to faith. The Latin and English versions then appear to ask God not to do something which he would never do anyway. “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one” (James 1:13). The Catechism of the Catholic Church indicates that what is meant by “lead us not into temptation” is “do not allow us to enter into temptation” or “do not let us yield to temptation” (#2846). So the Catechism comes down on the side of the new French and traditional Spanish versions. And yet, on the First Sunday of Lent, we will hear that after his baptism the Spirit drove Jesus into the desert, where he was tempted. Moreover, was it not God who planted the tree with the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden in order to test the man and the woman?

I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for a new translation of the Our Father in English. As far as I know, there has been no significant movement in English speaking episcopal conferences to do this. This makes me happy, for as I see it, there is ambiguity and tension with this issue in Scripture. Of course, God would never lead anyone to do evil. But Scripture affirms in both the Old and the New Testaments that he brings his people into times of testing. For this reason, I vote to keep the traditional English version, for I believe that where there is ambiguity and tension in the language of Scripture, it should not be resolved by the use of soothing translations.

Live the Liturgy Jesus proclaims today the Gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” Jesus challenges us to accept a change of heart, to start believing and thinking differently. The Gospel asks us to take the focus off ourselves and away from self-concern, and place it on our brothers and sisters, especially those most broken and in need, and on our environment. We are called to be stewards of all God has created. This means that we are also called to work on God’s behalf ensuring that all that God created and all who God created is cared for and protected.

Questions of the Week

Mark 1:14-20: In today’s Gospel reading, we hear the first words of Jesus spoken in the Gospel of Mark. Why do you think Jesus connects the kingdom of God with the need for repentance?

Jonah 3:1-5, 10: The Ninevites took seriously the warning to repent from the prophet Jonah. What motivates you to repent from your sins?

1 Corinthians 7:29-31: In his First Letter to the Corinthians, we hear how Paul is convinced that the return of Christ is imminent; in fact, “time is running out.” How do you think Paul would react knowing Jesus has still not returned?

The 2018 Annual Parish Appeal is underway. Our goal is $150,000. In the first ten weeks of the 2018 Ap-peal more than two hundred fifty families have pledged more than $79,000 of which $55,700 has been received. The Appeal will support continuing operations of the parish and help us fund a few necessary projects. These include upgrade of the HVAC system in the Church and Parish Life Center, improve-ment of the church sound system, including hearing assist devices, and improved use of electronic media in support of parish commu-nications. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the collection basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office Or, you may use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your donation. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity.

We are very pleased that our E-giving over the past four months has increased. The collection in-come through December for the fiscal year is almost $30,000 below our budgeted amount. Our beloved church with the associated facili-ties is 16 years old. As in your home, maintenance costs and op-erating costs need to be ad-dressed. You have demonstrated your generosity to enable us to fulfill our fiscal responsibilities. Please continue to be as generous as you can.

We are pleased to announce that our church has been selected to host homeless families in the Family Promise Program (up to 14 persons in all) for the week of February 11-18, 2017. Sign-ups will be available in early February in the church vestibule. To learn more about how to participate, contact Sharon Hannan at [email protected] or call 484-678-2142.

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION

The annual Catholic Relief Services Collection challenges American Catholics to put their faith into action and to see “Jesus in disguise” in the faces of the poor, the hungry and the disadvan-taged and to support ongoing efforts to respond to their needs. The collection will be taken up in the Archdiocese of Philadelph-ia the weekend of January 27/28, 2018.

As a reminder, at ABVM our ushers only pass the basket around once during Mass. If you use Parish E-giving, you may edit your giving information on line by logging in at www.faithdirect.net and clicking on the icon "Edit My Gifts" on the home screen. If you give by using envelopes you are asked to place your gifts to the parish and to the special collection in the basket at the same time, using the pre-printed envelopes you received in the mail. Please note that you may also use a blank envelope and write the name of a collection you wish to support on it.

The weekend of February 3-4, 2018, Father William Joensen will be visiting our parish on behalf of Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). Fr. William Joensen is a priest of the Archdiocese of Dubuque (IA) ordained in 1989 and is a member of the philoso-phy faculty and dean of campus spiritual life at Loras College. As dean, he promotes the Catholic identity and mission of the College and collaborates with FOCUS missionaries in ministering to students and staff. He also provides sacramental ministry at area parishes and institutions, has served on medical ethics and hospice boards, and is an occasional contributor to the Magnificat series of publications.

FOCUS is a national organization serving college students on more than 137 campuses across the United States and three campuses in Europe. Over 660 FOCUS missionaries on these cam-puses invite students into a relationship with Christ and His Church, while equipping them for a lifetime of Catholic evangelization. Fr. Bill is excited to be with you soon and share with you the hope of the New Evangelization! To learn more, please visit www.focus.org

THINK ABOUT THIS BEFORE YOU VISIT YOUR FINANCIAL ADVISOR FOR 2018

Available Option: Individual 70½ years old or older may make a charitable contribution from their annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA)

Advantages Individuals and eligible spouses can make an IRA charitable rollover and not have that transfer count towards your taxable income in the year you make the contribution. Charitable rollover amounts could count toward your RMD. By avoiding the recognition of taxable income, you may have less of your So-cial Security income subject to income tax.

Rules for Using an IRA Charitable Rollover Individuals must be 70½ years old or older. The rollover must be completed before December 31 of the year in which the contribution was to count against taxable income. Rollovers could only be made from traditional IRAs. Funds have to come DIRECTLY from the plan administrator to the parish.

These are generic advantages and rules. Talk with your financial advisor or plan administrator for advantages and rules applicable to your specific situation. If you wish to discuss this opportunity with a member of the Parish Development Council e-mail [email protected], President of the Development Council.

Mass Cards:

Due to the devotion of our parishioners, we no longer have Masses available for specific dates in the calendar year 2018. However, you are welcome to stop by the parish office for a Mass card. Your request and the usual donation of $10 will be passed on to St. Rocco Parish in Avondale, which still has a lot of openings for Mass intentions for this year and in 2018. If you want a specific date for the Mass to be said, however, you must contact St. Rocco Parish office directly at (610-268-3365). We will open our calendar to reserve Mass intentions for 2019 on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. To be fair to everyone, no reservations for Masses will be taken before then. Thank you for your understanding.
