Changing Spaces and Places...
It is the start of our Winter Semester this week and our learning theme is “Changing Spaces and Places”. It gives us the opportunity to give students a slightly different perspective on their learning by changing the environments they are in or even taking them into a completely different environment to approach their subject in a different way.
For example our GCSE Music students went to the Regal Theatre in Redruth this week to watch a live orchestra perform study pieces for their exam. Amongst other things, this gave them an insight into the benefits of drafting and re-drafting in the world of live performance. In an orchestra what we call “drafting and re-drafting”, they call practice and rehearsal. Their final examination is the performance.

Learning Outside The Classroom
Another great opportunity for our students to learn outside the classroom was the BBC arriving to broadcast this week’s edition of the popular current affairs programme, Question Time. The BBC and the programme makers, Mentorn, kindly offered 36 students the opportunity to see everything that goes into the making of the programme. Our students were treated to a tour of the broadcast facilities, operated some of the equipment and even took part in the afternoon rehearsal.
Our GCSE Citizenship students then took part in a student debate about Plastic Free Penzance chaired by David Dimbleby.
This week we have received a useful guide prepared by The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust to help students with preparing for their forthcoming GCSEs. There is also a very informative companion guide for parents and I recommend that you all take the time to read them.
Every Year 11 student has received copies on their iPad and they can also be viewed or dowloaded from our website here: http://mountsbay.org/for-parents/compass/student-support
Finally, we have some more special guests here today to finish the week. ‘RSVP’ will be showcasing their unique talents and giving our students workshops learning some of their “Big Bhangra Beats”. Some tickets for tonight’s performance are still available and can be obtained online from www.carntocove.co.uk. We look forward to seeing you there.
I would like to thank Helen Micciche, who delivers our Global Citizenship programme to all yeargroups, for organising the event. I was proud to see our young people demonstrating our globalgoals in such a confident and articulate manner. They clearly impressed our host and the wholeevent gave them the experience of a lifetime!
We received another great bit of news related to Global Goals this week when we found out that we had been awarded £2,000 as a result of participating in the Tesco “Bags of Help” scheme. In August 2017 they replaced single use carrier bags with new Bags for Life made from recyclable plastic to help reduce bag use. The money raised from carrier bag sales is used to fund local projects across Britain and we will be using our grant to improve our Food Technology equipment. Thank you to everyone who supported us by putting your token in our box.

Looking after yourself during your GCSEs
On Thursday MBA was visited by the BBC Question Time team. On Wednesday they started rigging lighting and preparing the set. Then, on Thursday,
the Production crew arrived at 9:00 am. We were asked to observe what happened and were lucky enough to be able to talk to members of the crew and production team.
During the day we spent a lot of time helping out in the Production Office (in our Library) with the Head of Production, Danni Lloyd. She was really nice and told us that she had started out in local radio and then worked her way up to her role now. As Head of
Production she is in charge of sorting everything out and making sure it all goes smoothly. She organises venues, is in charge of budgets and makes sure everyone knows where they need to be and what they need to do. Danni told us she had filmed in lots of places such as China, Miami and New York. She emphasised how much she loves her job and said her favourite venue was St Paul’s Cathedral, but she has also worked in unusual venues such as Wormwoods Scrubs Prison and a
ship in Plymouth, the HMS Albion, which we thought was amazing.
We also had a chance to talk to the Floor Manager, Stan Royle. He was really nice and was happy to talk about his job and some of the experiences he’d had during his time working at the BBC. His job is to make sure everything is going to plan, to keep people on schedule and make sure all people involved in the show are comfortable. He started
off his career wanting to be a television set designer because he was good at art and was bored of his job in a tax office, but there were no available openings for him, so he joined the BBC as a runner. He then went on to tell us about some of the experiences he had whilst in his current and past jobs. One of the amazing experiences he was given
BBC Question Time

by the BBC was to be able to stand on the Grand National race course and oversee an interview with the winning jockey. He has also had to deal with a
lot of difficult situations including being dragged by a horse, having to rescue a cat on set during a live recording and having to deal with a seagull that kept dropping a stick on a skylight. He told us he has seen unruly crowd/audience members and has had to speak to them but had never has any problems with the panel on Question Time.
The director, Rob Hopkin, then showed us where he worked in one of three huge lorries. He showed us
what all the buttons are used for on the vision mixer and how to switch from one camera to another. Rob said another lorry would arrive later with a huge satellite disk to send the programme to Glasgow, from where it is broadcast. He told us about the hierarchy of importance when talking to presenter David Dimbleby in his ear piece. Rob, as director, is the highest up and then the editor is next. After that we met the unit manager, Peter, who is in charge of the whole technical aspect of the show and claimed
he had the best job in the world. Joel, a cameraman, showed us his camera and said he supports the camera in the left (camera 2) with a different shot, for example, of three people if camera 2 is zoomed in on one person. Two of the cameramen have been involved in filming the X Factor and Britain’s got Talent.
Later, we met Benjamin Zephaniah and got pictures with him and David Dimbleby. We also met a lovely
makeup artist called Aimee Florence. Sadly, she was very ill when she was fifteen but, whilst she was in hospital, she spent a lot of time practising makeup and people brought her lots of products to practise with. From there she found her passion which is amazing. She was telling us about how her favourite

type of makeup genre was horror; she once camped in a wood for a horror film with Orcs in it! Aimee said she had also worked on Broadway, as
well as with Lily Allen.
We had a brilliant day and met some amazing people. We are very grateful to Mrs Micciche for this opportunity. We will never forget it.

Changing spaces and places - At Mounts Bay Academy we have many amazing spaces and places in which learning can and does take place. This week we challenged the staff to think about how they could use these within their subject areas.
Changing Spaces and Places
This week the Year 10 Business students were out and about completing their market research. Students were finding out about their target markets opinions on hats!
In Year 8 Element students swapped places with their teachers and led discussions and mind mapped their own knowledge harvest about the Economy. This was their first lesson and their knowledge on Business and Economics was brilliant - well done Year 8
It's the beginning of a new semester which means the Year 7s have moved to their new element projects. Miss Walters' Element group are looking at marine litter and how our actions locally can have a global impact. After a rainy morning the group took a walk around the Academy spotting every piece of plastic they could.
In GCSE PE this week Miss Veall's and Mr Strong's Year 9 groups transformed the gym into a replication of the pathway of blood through the cardiovascular system. The students then physically walked through the chambers of the heart, the pulmonary veins, pulmonary arteries, lungs, vena cava and aorta to develop their understanding about how blood is transported.
Lilly and Elsey were interviewed by Debbie McCrory on BBC Radio Cornwall on 24th November 2018 to publicise a pizza evening they are holding on 17th January at MBA. The girls, and 9 other MBA students, are taking part in the World Challenge expedition
to India with the Academy. All 11 students have to raise £3,000 each. The pizza evening will raise money for all 11 students. Lilly and Elsey will also be selling their wares at The Garrick Hotel’s Craft Market in St Ives on Friday 30th November as well as the Penzance Youth Market at the Christmas lights switch on on 1st December. Please support them if you can.

10 Blue won the award for best attendance for Project Week with 98.5%. Project Weeks are an important element of our curriculum and allow us to deliver many exciting topics in a more creative way. Last week’s focus on Global Goals enriched many subject areas including Geography and Science. Attendance during project weeks is therefore very important for all students.

Punctuality
Students are expected to be in their tutor rooms by 8.40am every morning. Learning to take responsibility for getting to school on time is vital for students’ future careers and job prospects so we take this very seriously. Faults will be issued when students arrive late and if the situation does not improve, detentions may be used to make up lost time. Please support us in this by ensuring your child leaves home in plenty of time to arrive at the Academy punctually.

Helpers are needed for the revamp of the poly tunnel. If you are interested in the designing of the poly tunnel or clearing it out and preparing it for growing things or the actual planting of the crops and the upkeep when it is finished, please come to a meeting in room 8 at lunch time on Monday. If you cannot attend but are interested, please let me know and we will keep you posted.
There will be a planning process and hopefully in the project week at the beginning of February, we will have the full week to sort the area and get it up and running.

This week former MBA student, Lisa Mae Evans, visited the Academy to discuss opportunities and careers in the arts. Lisa Mae left Mounts Bay five years ago, and after completing her Art GCSE, continued to pursue her love of the subject at college. This
led Lisa Mae to study Visual Effects in Film and Television at the University of Hertfordshire, the leading University in the country for this subject. Lisa Mae said that she wanted to come back and speak to GCSE students to guide and reassure them.
“I remember feeling quite lost during my school years because I was truly passionate about art but couldn't stop thinking about the 'it's not a real job' mentality. I would love other students at MBA to feel as though there are fantastic options out there for those with a passion for art and film, or any other creative interests they have.”
It was a pleasure to have Lisa Mae back and to hear all about her successes and to view
her beautiful portfolios. Her visit was truly inspiring for students.

Last Thursday, the HPI choir went to Camborne Music Festival. We performed Starmaker from Fame and Fix You by Coldplay. We were against other schools in the senior schools intermediate class including Humphry Davy School. The performances went really well and we won "highly commended" with 171/200 points. Our feedback said that we produced a warm tone and our parts were well balanced in both songs. There were 20 people in the choir and everyone was amazing. Thank you to Mr Hoadley for arranging and teaching the rehearsals and conducting the pieces!

On Wednesday 21st November, 40 students and four members of staff set out on a two hour coach journey to Plymouth to watch ‘Shrek, The Musical’.
We arrived at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth, where there was time to eat lunches and check out the merchandise, before the show started at 2:30pm. There was an amazing atmosphere in the theatre and we were lucky enough to get central seating, so we had an amazing view of the stage.
The story was brought to life through music, dance and brilliant acting. The props and set made the show seem even more real. One particularly clever prop was the dragon -
an enormous puppet that moved around the stage. Everybody got very into it, singing and clapping along to all the songs. A favourite was definitely Donkey who was extremely funny!
Overall the show was a huge success and everyone really enjoyed the afternoon and evening out.

I particularly enjoyed the performances of songs by The Beatles, but also had fun listening to the earlier music as well. I really enjoyed the trip and I am glad that I have listened to the pieces we will be studying.
I think that this trip was useful to me as I can now picture the songs being played and which instruments play which part of the song. I will now keep this trip in mind while completing my GCSE Music course.

On 27th November, we went to the Regal Theatre in Redruth to listen to different pieces we will be studying during our GCSE Music course. These pieces were performed by professional musicians and members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. It was a very good experience all the way through, especially considering that I have only been to see a couple of orchestras before. The musicians played pieces from different time periods and different counties, ranging from the 1600s to the modern day.

The match we had on Wednesday against Penrice was very tough but fairly won. We started the first half going uphill with the wind in our faces. The team who
played during the first half were very good; passing, running and tackling. During the first half Penrice slipped two tries past us, which was enough for us to be in trouble.
During the second half, however, we had the right attitude and passed the ball out to the open wings which led us in the right way. Our first try was scored by Charlie who charged brilliantly through a group of players. The next fantastic try was by Josh, who curved
around a group of players and ran along the wing. The next try was by Tobias, who ran across half the pitch and broke through the opposition players. The last try was another amazing try, this time scored by Charlie, who just got tackled before the try line but just got over the line.
The match finished 4-2. All our players had great fun and worked very well together.Well done team!

On Wednesday the Year 8 ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams travelled to Penrice Academy to play rugby. At the start of the ‘A’ team match Jowan scored quickly, followed a short while later by Charlie scoring his first try and then another one a little while after that. Will was quick to add to this list of scorers. In the second half we were on the offensive again, with Jowan finishing the offence with another try. Then Ted offloaded to Seb who ran in the tackle and then made an offload to Jago who ran into the corner. Kaea, running off a scrum, picked his way through a hole and found the try line.
Well played boys! A special mention to Levan and Oli as they both went on to the other team showing good sportsmanship.

On Wednesday 28th November Mounts Bay travelled to Penrice Academy. The game was close and was decided by a last minute try, by Penrice. The whole team played really well and there were try saving tackles from most of the team in the final minutes. The players who scored were Aydon, Leo, Sam and Jake T. It was a close game and we defended well but they still scored their last try with seconds to spare.
