Grammar Lesson 30 - Nouns, Verbs, and Diagramming

Remember:A noun is the name of some - the name of a person, the name of a place, or thename of a thing.A verb, is what the noun is doing.

In each sentence, color the noun red and color the verb blue. (There will be onlyone noun and one verb in each sentence.) First find the noun. Then ask yourselfwhat the noun is doing. Whatever the noun is doing - that is the verb. Thendiagram the sentence*.

(1) The wind blew fast.

(2) The monkey jumped up and down.

(3) Run away, Callie!

(4) The water feels cold.

(5) Crystal wore red.

(6) Stand over there, George.

*Since diagramming is a new idea and we are only working on nouns and verbs, that is the only part of the sentence we will bediagramming - the nouns and verb. We will diagram other parts later.

And birds can spread their wins and sailOr hop on lawns with ease.

Boys and girls hop, too, you know.Kids all play games for fun.

Just like merry animals,They leap and prance and run.

Health - Unit 2 Healthy Habits - Lesson 1

CarbohydratesWhen you think about keeping your body healthy, one of the first things that probably comes toyour mind is the food you eat. And you're right; eating healthy food is important. But how do youknow which food is healthy and which food is not? Well, one way you can tell if a food is healthy isby looking at the nutrients inside it. Nutrients are materials (things) in the food that your body canuse to stay healthy.

One important nutrientyou can look for in yourfood is carbohydrates.Carbohydrates give yourbody lots of energy, whichyou need as you aregrowing up. Why do youthink you need so muchenergy? One reason isbecause your body needsenergy to work.

Think of any electricalappliance: a computer or alamp or a microwave. Dothey work withoutelectricity? Your bodycannot work withoutenergy either, but sinceyou can't plug yourself in,you take in food rich incarbohydrates instead andthey give you energy.

Carbohydrates also giveyour body energy forother important things, things like growing andplaying and moving. The

energy helps your brain to work and your ears to hear and your heart to pump.

Some good tasting foods that are high (or have a lot of) carbohydrates are beans, peas, corn, rice, crackers, potatoes, oatmeal, bread, tortillas, and pasta. Do any of these sound yummy to you?

Health - Unit 2 Healthy Habits - Lesson 2

MineralsMinerals are another important nutrient you can look for in foods that are good for your body.Minerals help your muscles to work right and they help your nerve pathways to function so that yourbrain can use them to send messages all over your body.

Let's look at some important minerals now:

Calcium: Calcium is extremely important for keeping your bones strong and healthy. All the whileyou are growing, yourbones are changing fromcartilage to regular bonematerial, and they needcalcium to help themmake those changes.Even after you finishgrowing, your bones willstill need calcium if theyare to stay strong.Calcium also makes yourheart beat regularly, makes your teeth strongand helps you to buildmuscles. It is found infoods like milk, cheeseand yogurt, fish (likesardines, herring, and

salmon), soybeans (and things made with soybeans like soy milk), and vegetables like kale, bok choy, and greens (beet, collard, mustard, and turnip).

Phosphorus: Phosphorus works hand in hand with calcium to makes your bones and teeth strong. The trick with phosphorus is to eat the same amount of phosphorus as calcium. The reason this istricky is because most people eat too much phosphorus because it is in everything. (Soda isespecially high in phosphorus.) It is best if you get phosphorus from natural foods, like peanutbutter, bananas, beans, oatmeal, spinach, avocados, peas, lentils and bread.

Iron: Iron is very important because it helps your blood and muscles to be strong. When people donot have enough iron, they feel tired and grumpy and sometimes they have trouble breathing. Theymay even feel bored a lot. To get enough iron, you should eat foods like beef and pork, apricots, beans, potatoes, peas, raisins, sardines (fish), prunes or prune juice, and blackstrap molasses.

There are many more minerals than what are listed here and all of them are important. Withoutminerals, your body would not work right.

Health - Unit 2 Healthy Habits - Lesson 3

ProteinProtein is another veryimportant nutrient foryou to take into yourbody. Why is that?Well, your hair, skin, nails and muscles aremostly made of out ofprotein. Your bones aremade out of a lot ofprotein too. That iswhy proteins, which arenutrients needed tohelp build, grow andrepair cells, arenecessary for you toeat.

Where does protein come from? Plant protein comes from three groups of food. The(1st) first group of food is legumes, like beans, peas, peanuts and soy. The (2nd) group isnuts and seeds, like sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or walnuts. The (3rd) group is grains, like wheat, oats, pasta, and corn. You may also get protein from animal sources, like fish, chicken, meat, and eggs.

Not all proteins are complete so it is a good idea to mix proteins together. For exampleyou could eat peanut butter on a slice of bread (combines two proteins). Or you could eata slice of pepperoni pizza (combines three proteins). Or you could eat chicken with riceand peas (combines three proteins). Native peoples in the Americas always did this byeating combinations of food, like tacos (corn tortilla with meat) and beans. You can learnto do this too.

Health - Unit 2 Healthy Habits - Lesson 4

VitaminsLike carbohydrates, minerals and proteins, vitamins are necessary nutrients for you to take in if youwant to be healthy. They do this by helping your body to absorb or process proteins, carbohydratesand fats. They give you energy and make you feel good, and they make your body work in just theright way. Let's look at a few vitamins to see how this happens:

Vitamin A: helps you togrow, helps you to fightinfection, helps your eyes, your bones and your teeth

Vitamin D: helps yourbones and teeth, helpsyour body to absorbcalcium, and makes yournerve pathways work right

Vitamin E: helps yourblood and muscles, andheals up scars

Vitamin K: helps yourblood to clot

Vitamin C: helps your bodyto heal, fights infections, makes your veins stronger, and helps your body toabsorb iron

B Vitamins (such as B1, B2, B6, B12, Folate, and Niacin): helps you to feel happy, give youenergy, helps you to grow, gives you a good appetite, helps your muscles, is good for your eyes andskin, helps your body to fight diseases and infections, and is good for helping to make more cells

Some people think that all you need to do to get enough vitamins is to take a vitamin pill, but is thatgood enough? No, it is not. And some people will try to trick you into thinking their food, likebreakfast cereal or chips, is good for you because they added some vitamins to their product. Butjust because they add some vitamins does not make it good for you.

Vitamins need to be eaten in the food that they came from, which means eating lots of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and grains. This is because fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and grains arebalanced. They have just the right amount of vitamins in them, mixed with just the right amount ofminerals and proteins and carbohydrates to help your body use those vitamins. Make sure you eatplenty of these each day.

Math Lesson 29c: Missing Numbers

How do you find a missing number? There is a trick to finding missing numbers. (1)First, figure out whether it an addition (+) problem or a subtraction (-) problem. Then do the opposite. For example, look at the problem below. 2 + ___ = 3. Thatis an addition problem. You can tell because you see a plus sign (+). To find themissing number, then, you will do the opposite: you will subtract (-). Do this: 3 - 2.What is the answer? ----- So the missing number is 1. That's an easy trick, isn'tit?

2 + ___ = 3

Write the missing number.

2 + ___ = 5 ___ + 3 = 4

4 + ___ = 4 ___ - 4 = 4

Writing Numbers 30 - Hundred Thousands

Look at this number: 321,000. Notice the 321 at the beginning of the number.Because all those numbers are in the thousand's place and the ten thousand's placeand the hundred thousand's place, when we read it we read it as three hundredtwenty-one thousand.

If the number were 321,492, we would read it as:

three hundred twenty-one thousand, four hundred ninety-two

Write the numbers. Remember NOT to write the word "and". Also, rememberthat a comma goes in between the number in the thousand's place and thehundred's place.

How many eggs still need to hatch? _____

Page 23: 3rd Grade Worksheets - Week 7 of 36

As we go throughout our day every day, there willbe many times when we are looking at parts ofthings. For example, look at these eggs. Thiscarton can hold 12 eggs, but 2 eggs got taken outand 10 eggs are left in the carton.

So 2 out of the 12 eggs are out of thecarton. And 10 of the 12 eggs are still in thecarton.

How would you write 2 out of 12?

And how would you write 10 out of 12?

Can you come up with some ideas of how to write numbers like that? Do it any wayyou like because these are your ideas. Show your ideas in the box below and we willtalk about your great ideas later.

Math Lesson 31b: Showing Parts

Remember how you came up with some great ideas to show parts of eggs? I reallyliked your ideas. Now I want to show you how most people write parts.

They do it with a line —.

Here's how it works.

Under the line you write how many parts in all. For example, in the picture thereare 12 eggs in all. So, you would write 12 under the line like this.

On top of the line you write just the parts you are thinking of. For example if youare thinking of the two eggs that are out of the carton you would write 2 over 12.If you were thinking of the ten eggs that are still in the carton, you would write 10over 12.

Page 26: 3rd Grade Worksheets - Week 7 of 36

Why don't you give it a try.

How many children are in this picture in all? Write that UNDER the line.

Now let's look at part of the children. Tell how many of the children are boys.Write how many children in all UNDER the line. Write how many boys there are onTOP of the line.

Good job.

Now see if you can show how many girls there are:

Reading Lesson 25 -Hanasaka Jiisan*

Once upon a time in a remote village in Japan there lived an honest old man and hiswife.

One day, when the old man was out plowing his field, a little white puppy camerunning toward him, crying. The puppy had run away from the neighbors, who livedin the next field over, because he had been mistreated by the greedy old neighborman and his wife.

"Oh, you poor thing," exclaimed the nice old man. He took the puppy in and namedhim Shiro, which means "white" in Japanese.

The old man and his wife loved Shiro very much. Shiro, in turn, became devoted tothe old couple and helped the old man with his work in the field every day.

Shiro ate and ate and quickly grew into a big dog.

*Japanese folktale and pictures taken from http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/folk/hanasaka/hanasaka01.html.

Page 33: 3rd Grade Worksheets - Week 7 of 36

One day Shiro led the old man up a nearby mountain. When they reached the top,Shiro barked, "Arf! Arf! Dig here! Arf! Arf!" The old man began to dig in theground and, to his amazement, sparkling gold coins started pouring up from theground.

Page 34: 3rd Grade Worksheets - Week 7 of 36

But then a terrible thing happened. The greedy old neighbor man heard about thegolden coins. "Let me borrow Shiro!" he cried and then he grabbed Shiro andforced the dog to take him and his wife to the mountain.

"Where's the gold?" the mean neighbor man demanded when they reached the top.

Frightened, Shiro began to whimper.

"Ah, so it is here," said the neighbor man, and he began to dig. But instead of goldcoins, garbage began to pour out from the ground.

"How dare you!" exclaimed the old man. And, furious, he and his wife killed Shiro.

Page 35: 3rd Grade Worksheets - Week 7 of 36

When the honest old couple found out about this, they were overcome with grief. They decided to dig a grave for Shiro. Upon burying Shiro, a sapling sprouted fromthe ground above his grave. By the next day it had grown into a towering tree.

"Shiro liked steamed rice cakes," recalled the old man. "Let's make some and totake to his grave."

He chopped down the tree that had sprung from Shiro's graveand made a mortar. Then he and his wife began to prepare therice cakes. As the old man pounded the rice into the mortar, itturned into gold coins.

When the greedy old couple learned about this, they rushedover. "Give us that mortar," they demanded.

Stealing the mortar, they returned to their house and began to make rice cakes. When they pounded the rice, however, it turned into black mud right before theireyes.

"What on earth?" cried the greedy old man. Furious, he took an axe and choppedthe mortar to pieces. Then he tossed the pieces of wood into the stove andburned them.

Page 36: 3rd Grade Worksheets - Week 7 of 36

The honest man was disheartened. He gathered up the ashes from the mortar, putthem in a box, and carried the box carefully back to his house.

"Let's sprinkle these ashes over the field and grow the radishes that Shiro lovedto much." When the old man sprinkled the ashes, a wind swirled up and blew theashes into a dead tree. Amazingly the dead tree began to bloom beautiful cherryblossoms. He then went and happily sprinkled ashes onto one dead tree afteranother, each thereafter bloomed brilliant cherry flowers.

News of the old man's miracle reached the town and, before long, even the kinghad heard. The king promptly sent for the man.

The old man was brought to the king carry his box of ashes. "Now I'll make theflowers bloom." He sprinkle the ashes onto the nearby trees and immediatelybeautiful white cherry flowers appeared.

"Splendid!" exclaimed the king, who was very pleased. "Well done. You are thegreatest flower bloomer in all of Japan. You will be rewarded."

Page 37: 3rd Grade Worksheets - Week 7 of 36

At that moment, the greedy old man came running, carrying leftover ashes whichhe had gathered from the stove. "Wait! I am the greatest flower bloomer inJapan," he claimed. Reading Lesson 28 - Fact or Opinion*

When you read, you need to know the difference between statements of fact andstatements that tell an author's opinion. A statement of fact tells something thatcan be proved true or false. You can check it by reading, observing, or asking anexpert. A statement of opinion tells how a person feels, believes, or thinks. Thesestatements cannot be proved true or false.

Statements of opinion may sound like facts because at first they seem to be true. It's important to know the difference when you are looking for information, because an opinion may change from one person to another, but facts do notchange.

Social Studies 21 - Community - Bananas

Do you like bananas? -----

Bananas first start out on a banana farm. Bananas grow on plants. The plants aretall and they have a big stalk in the middle, kind of like trees. In fact many peoplethink they are trees, but they are not. They really are plants.

When the bananas are still very green and not even ripe yet, the farmers pickthem. They pick them green because if they waited until they turned yellow, thebugs would get to them. So they pick them while they are still green.

You can see in the picture that many bananas grow together on a plant. After thefarmers pick the banana bunches, they must cut them into smaller bunches andthen wash the bananas to make sure there is no dirt or bugs on them.

Page 48: 3rd Grade Worksheets - Week 7 of 36

When the bananas are clean andready, they are put into boxes andloaded onto a special boat called areefer ship. A reefer ship is aship that has cold refrigeratorsfor things that could go bad easily, like bananas. When bananas arekept very cold, they stay freshlonger.

A reefer ship is a ship with gigantic refrigerators in it. The gigantic refrigeratorsare for perishable things. Perishable means it could go bad easy. Have you everseen a piece of fruit or a piece of meat with flies all over it or mold? ----- It'spretty nasty, isn't it? ----- If something perishes, it means that it died or wasdestroyed. We don't want our food to perish, do we? -----

When we go to the store, we want to buy freshfood. For example, we don't want to buy old, nasty bananas, do we? ----- No, we want to buyfresh, pretty-looking bananas. Old nasty bananasdon't taste good. But fresh bananas taste good. When bananas are put into a very coldrefrigerator on a reefer ship, they stay freshlonger. And we like fresh bananas.

On some reefer ships, banana boxes are loaded inthese gigantic refrigerators. On other reeferships, banana boxes have already been loaded intorefrigerated cargo containers. A refrigeratedcargo container is a cargo container that has beenturned into a big refrigerator inside. The cargocontainer is then loaded onto the reefer ship andthe reefer ship takes it to wherever the bananasneed to go.

They also help Japan to be friends with other countries of the world. For example, look at this picture. Here you see Crown Prince Naruhito, Crown Princess Masako, and little Princess Aiko. They are in the Netherlands, visiting King Willem-Alexander, the king's wife Máxima, and two of the king's daughters: PrincessCatharina-Amalia and Princess Ariane. (Princess Aiko and Princess Catharina-Amalia are holding hands.) Because of the nice visit, now these two countries canbe friends with each other.
