The Pastor’s Pen…. The 10 Commandments are well known to us, or at least they ought be. They form the basic principles and underpinning of civil society, ethical choices and decent behaviour. They set the lowest limits, beneath which we fall into moral corruption. This is because, apart from the 4th, they are formulated as ’Thou shalt nots’, delineating the least we ought avoid doing, such as killing, perjuring, stealing, committing adultery and so on. The first three outline our responsibilities to God and to our religious community; 1. Worshipping only the one True and Living God, and having no other false gods at the centre of our lives and thinking; 2. Honouring God’s holy name and never taking false oaths using the name of God. To do would be a terrible misuse of the name of the God who is always honest and true. It would not only be perjury, but blasphemy as well. This commandment comes with a clear threat of punishment from God if we break it; 3. Keeping the Sabbath Holy, attending to our prayer, our community’s worship of God and service of those in need. Number.4 is different in that it is phrased positively. We are to honour our parents because our reward will be long life in the land God has given to our care. This is a commandment of respect for those who cared for us so that we, too, will get time to care for the land and all it produces. Now on to the Gospel text, and a trivia question; If we’re in Year B cycle of readings (we are) why are we hearing from John’s Gospel and not that of St. Mark? The simple answer is that Mark’s Gospel is too short (just 16 chapters) so the Church has chosen to fill up the other weeks/weekends with readings from the other longer and more comprehensive Gospels, particularly that of St. John. We also have a three year A, B, and C cycle based on Matthew, Mark and Luke, so we wouldn’t ever get to hear John’s Gospel were it not for the brevity of St. Mark’s story. In practice this means that we’ll be hearing from St. John, beginning this weekend and going pretty well right through the Easter Season. We’ll also be hearing more of St. John from the 17th to the 26th Sundays in Ordinary Time inclusive. This weekend we hear John’s story of the cleansing of the Jerusalem Temple by Jesus. He was sick to the teeth of the corruption of religion and the misuse of the devotion of honest folk for greed by the powerful elite. His action threw down the gauntlet to those who ran the religious and political/social fabric of Jewish society. John points out that there is reference to Jesus being raised in what was said between Him and the Jewish authorities. Jesus is the New and True temple that God is building, a temple that welcomes all people of faith and good will. St. Paul, in the second reading, speaks of God's process in building this New and Everlasting temple. Its foundation stone is the Cross which reveals in Jesus Christ the heart of God to all, a heart of loving sacrifice and service for our salvation, freedom and life. To the Jews, who thought the Messiah would be a triumphant warrior and Kingly ruler, this is all too silly for words, an obstacle. To the pagans it hasn’t any human wisdom or logic and so it is a folly. But, as St. Paul teaches, to those who believe it is the surest sign ever of the power and wisdom of God which is always stronger and wiser than any human skill or talent. There’s a lot in these three readings to ponder as we embark on the Third Lenten week of our pilgrimage. Fr. Mark Percival. MA, PP.

There’s a lot in these three readings to ponder as we embark on the Third Lenten

week of our pilgrimage. Fr. Mark Percival. MA, PP.

Presentation of the Creed: This weekend at the Saturday evening Mass and Sunday 8am Mass our Catechumen and Candidates for full Initiation into the Catholic Church will be presented with the Creed, as they continue their Lenten pilgrimage to full life with the Church at Easter. Two weeks ago our nine Candidates and one Catechumen gathered with their sponsors at St Stephen's Cathedral for the Rite of Election. The photograph on the front page of the newsletter shows our parish group with Archbishop Mark Coleridge, outside the Cathedral after the celebration. Please continue to pray for our Candidates and Catechumen in these weeks of Lent.

Sacraments of Initiation for Children: Enrolments are now open for those families who attended the Compulsory Parent Information Night on 22 February. Please enrol online as per the information in your handouts. Enrolments close on 10th March 2018. The Rite of Enrolment for this program will take place over the weekend of 17/18 March. As per the calendar for sacramental preparation, that was included in the information pack, you will need to nominate your preferred Mass time. Please RSVP to the Sacramental Coordinator at: [email protected]

Book Club special guests: at our next meeting of the Parish Book Club on 20th April at 2pm our visitors will be Rhonda Collard-Spratt and Jackie Ferro, co-authors of “Alice’s Daughter”. This is the story of a young aboriginal girl removed to a Western Australian Mission in 1954 at the age of 3. Rhonda has become a much admired poet, musician, and artist, but it has not always been an easy journey for someone never shown love as she grew up. Jackie (nee Hauff) is a local identity who co-authored the work, skilfully allowing Rhonda’s to be the voice of the book. This will be a thoroughly entertaining afternoon, involving music, poetry, art and discussion – and of course, afternoon tea. All are welcome to attend. Put a note in your calendar now and don’t miss this fabulous event.

Fr Paul Chandler has been granted leave to serve as Assistant Priest in the Parish of Keilor Downs in the Archdiocese of Melbourne. We also welcome Fr Thomas Varkey MCBS who is currently serving in the Parish of Beenleigh.

Religious Instruction in State Schools: Due to an increase in the number of classes at both Sherwood and Corinda State Schools, new teachers are needed for one hour per week as follows: • One teacher to take two Year 1 classes at Sherwood State School. • Two teachers to take two Year 3 classes at Sherwood State School. • One teacher to take a Year 6 x 2 combined class at Corinda State School. A Blue Card is required but can be applied for at no cost to a volunteer. A recommendation from Fr Mark will also be required. Help with preparation of lessons will be given. Contact Bill and Milly Hancock on 3379 1879.

Bayan is a 12-year-old Syrian girl, living with her family in Jordan, a keen student, who has her

sights set on a career as an ophthalmologist. She struggled to overcome the trauma of growing up in a

conflict zone, facing the prospect of missing out on schooling. Now, Bayan is an academic high-

achiever, flourishing in a stable school environment.

Bayan grew up in Syria’s capital, Damascus. The Syrian conflict turned their lives upside down and

they were forced to flee. As their time in Jordan extended, Caritas Australia and our partners, Caritas

Jordan and Catholic Relief Services stepped in to provide vital academic and psychosocial support.

Bayan started attending one of Jordan’s Caritas Schools which operates on Saturdays, providing

tuition to disadvantaged students.

“The school brings them back to a normal life, as they start to dream again,” says Abeer, Caritas

Education and Protection Co-ordinator. Caritas provides a broad range of other education services,

including preparing pre-school children for school, supporting students who have missed out on schooling to return to the education

system, as well as counselling and nutritious meals and snacks at school.

" I would not be able to read and write. I would feel lost, as if I knew nothing about the world. School has the power to lift us up, so we can

reach our goals and learn quickly." - Bayan

Easter Triduum Ceremonies – your involvement...

Our Liturgies and Masses throughout Holy Week and Easter Sunday are always beautifully rich and sensitively joyful, thanks to the assistance of so many kind and generous volunteers within our Parish. This weekend is your opportunity to be part of this year’s Easter Triduum celebrations.

The Church noticeboard contains the lists where you can sign up to help. The list looks a little different this year due to compliancy with the Archdiocesan Privacy Policy. Instead of asking you to write your telephone number for all to see, we just ask you to give us approval to take your telephone number and email address from the Parish database and share it only with the coordinator of the Easter Triduum Ceremony, in which you wish to participate.

It is as easy as ticking the box beside your name giving this approval. Where the box is not 'ticked' your telephone number will not be made available. Looking forward to seeing a wave of volunteers flooding the lists for 2018 Easter Triduum.

HYMNS AND RESPONSES FOR SUNDAY MASSES

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

"PSALM 19: LORD, YOU HAVE THE WORDS"

LENTEN GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: "MASS SHALOM"

COMMUNION: "TABLE SONG"

Refrain: We are the body of Christ. Broken and poured out;

promise of life from death. We are the body of Christ.

1. Is not the bread of life we break / a sharing in the life of God?

Is not the cup of peace out-poured / the blood of Christ?

2. How shall we make a return to God, for goodness un-surpassing?

This saving cup we shall hold high, and call out God’s name!

3. Unless a grain of wheat shall fall / upon the earth, it shall remain

a single grain; but if it dies, it will come to life!

4. Come taste and see the goodness, the wonders of the risen one!

Come bless our God, in all things, let praise be our song!
