While the economic gloom of thepast few years has presented thelogistics industry with a number of

challenges, there is every reason to feel thata corner has been turned and the sectorcan look forward with optimism.

UKWA recently undertook a survey of itsmembers and the answers we receivedcertainly appear to support that view.

For example, more than half (51%) ofthe respondents stated that they expect toinvest more in equipment, people andpremises in 2014 than they did in 2013.

The majority of respondents (53%) expectto see their investment in informationtechnology increase next year, while 49% ofthose quizzed are preparing to spend moreon their vehicle fleets. Extra staff (47%),bigger premises (47%) and materialshandling equipment (39%) are other areaswhere respondents predicted that they willbe spending more. Only 10% foresaw adecline in their year-on-year spending.

The sector’s bullish investment plans arematched by a confident attitude towards thelikely direction of company turnover in2014 with 55% of respondents anticipatingan increase. 33% thought their turnover waslikely to remain unchanged while 12% are

expecting a fall. The survey also showed that in 2013

most workers (61%) employed in the 3PLsector received a modest pay rise. Themajority (67%) were awarded an increaseof 3% or less while 33% enjoyed anabove-inflation salary boost of between 3and 5%.

Encouragingly, nearly half of thecompanies surveyed (47%) expect to beable to give a general pay rise to all staff in2014.

The results of the survey also indicatethat there are strong levels of satisfactionamong users of 3PL services with theperformance of their suppliers. Across thesector an average of 83.78% of allcontracts that were up for renewal wereextended with 14% of respondents reportingthat they had enjoyed a 100% contractrenewal rate over the past year.

The 3PLs surveyed work with their clientsfor an average of 8.77 years, although themajority (59%) report that their relationshipswith established customers stretch back 10years or more – providing further evidenceof the apparently high feelings ofcontentment among 3PL users.

When it comes to new business wins, the

survey was 2.41 years. For theoverwhelming majority of those questioned(80%) new contracts tend to be for betweenone and 3 years, while 20% stated that, onaverage, clients were prepared to commit to3-5 year deals.

In some - admittedly rare - instances, theamount of time taken up by the tenderingprocess that 3PLs must undertake beforethey successfully land new business isalmost as long as the contract itself! 4% ofrespondents reported that the averagelength of a new business bid process is over18 months but for most (45%) the ‘flash tobang’ time between the initial business pitchand the signing of an agreement is between3 and 6 months.

Discussions between 3PLs and theirclients over the renewal of existing contractsstart 0-3 months before the contract expirydate in 31% of cases; 3-6 months beforethe renewal date for 33% and 6-9 monthsout for 27% of respondents.

Of course, while the majority ofrespondents to UKWA’s 3PL 2013 reportappear in buoyant mood going in to 2014,the sector faces challenges on a number offronts. When asked to rate the greatestthreats to their business, respondents votedincreased price competition, cost inflation(particularly fuel) and regulations and legalissues among the issues giving most causefor concern.

In the past year, the majority ofrespondents (82%) had increased the cost oftheir services by up to 5% to cover risingfuel charges. A small number (5%) hadbeen compelled to raise their prices bymore than 10% to offset the rising price offuel.

But respondents had other ways ofcountering fuel costs in addition to pricehikes. 35% had introduced fuel monitoringtechnology and put more emphasis onbetter driver training, while somecompanies (12%) had sought to mitigate theimpact of fuel price rises by negotiatingfixed rate deals from their suppliers andothers (12%) had switched fuel suppliers.

Despite concerns about fuel prices, thereappears to be little appetite within the sectorto embrace rail as an alternative to movinggoods by road. When asked if they arelikely to use rail transport to distributeproducts over the next 12 months 82%responded ‘rarely’, 11% answered‘sometimes’ and just 7% said ‘regularly’.

One depressing aspect of the survey wasthe respondents’ attitude towards training. While 45% reported that staff receivetraining on an ad-hoc basis, only 18%have any kind of formal staff ormanagement training program inplace and 37 per cent reported thattheir company offers ‘very little’ or noformal training to key workers.

More disappointing still was theapproach to apprenticeship schemes. 69%of respondents have no formalapprenticeship scheme (ie, one that is runwith support/formal recognition from theNational Apprenticeship Service) in place.Of the 24% that do operate such schemes, the majority are in warehousing andstorage (50%) and logistics operationsmanagement (25%).

Finally, the influx of potentially morecost-efficient immigrant labour to the UK,does not appear to have had much impacton the 3PL sector. The majority ofrespondents (37%) stated that less than 10%of their workforce consists of people whosefirst language is not English, while 29%claimed that their workforce is made upentirely of English speakers. 4% stated thatmore 50% of their staff are people whosefirst language is not English.

Redshift Research conducted the survey for3PL 2103 among nearly 60 UKWA membersranging from firms with less than 20employees to companies with a workforce ofover 500. The survey was conducted in inSeptember 2013 in accordance within theMarket Research Society’s code of conduct, which guarantees anonymity to allrespondents.

“Of course, while the majority of respondents to UKWA’s 3PL 2013 report appear in buoyantmood going in to 2014, the sector faces challenges on a number of fronts. When asked torate the greatest threats to their business, respondents voted increased price competition, cost inflation (particularly fuel) and regulations and legal issues among the issues givingmost cause for concern”

Because most companies have a majorpercentage of their costs tied up intheir supply chains, supply chain

management - once seen as something ofan add-on with no real bearing on abusiness’s ultimate success - has beenelevated to a key board-level discipline. And,with economic showing signs of recovery anoptimised supply chain is more importantthan ever.

The approach to supply chainoptimisation has traditionally focused on onepiece of the puzzle at a time. These caninclude sourcing goods and servicesstrategically to strike a balance betweenlowest material and transportation costs;maintaining the right mix and location offactories and warehouses to serve customermarkets; and, using traditional logisticstechniques to maximize distributionefficiency.

However, since the 1980s there has beena sharp upturn in the number of companiesthat choose to outsource logistics and supply

chain management functions to third partylogistics service providers – or 3PLs.

Typically, 3PLs specialise in integratedwarehousing and transportation services thatcan be scaled and customised to acustomer’s needs. The kind of serviceoffered will be based on a client company’sown unique market conditions and thedemands and delivery service requirementsfor the goods that company produces andsells.

In today’s price sensitive market, the needto drive cost out of the supply chain is oftencited as a major reason for using third partylogistics service providers. However, perhapsa better reason for engaging outside expertsis the in-depth knowledge, flexibility andadded value that a specialist contractor canprovide. In short, as well as helpingcompanies to achieve significant costsavings, a good 3PL will enable a businessto enjoy shorter order cycles, better customerservice and improved all-round businessefficiency.

There is no question that an effectivelymanaged supply chain can positivelyinfluence business performance and, ifcompanies are going to succeed in anincreasingly competitive and unpredictableenvironment, every link in the chain mustoperate at optimum efficiency. That’s whyany company that finds its fixed logisticscosts are having a negative impact on itsbalance sheet simply has to consideroutsourcing to a 3PL.

Value addedMembers of UKWA – the leading tradeassociation for the third party logistics industry -undertake an exceptional range of warehousingand added value services, from animal feedstorage through bonded warehousing toe-fulfilment but, regardless of the areas inwhich they specialise, the Association’smembers all share a determination to drive upprofessional standards in the warehousingsector. You can find a UKWA membercapable of meting your logistics needs byvisiting the UKWA site –www.ukwa.org.uk

Gain an advantageWhat advantages should a company expect and look forwhen considering entering into a third party logisticsagreement?• A healthier balance sheet - switching to a 3PLremoves the requirement for capital investment inwarehouses, materials handling equipment andtransport fleets, and the up-keep and maintenance ofthese assets allowing financial resources to beconcentrated on other core business areas.• Operational flexibility - a 3PL will have the resourcesto meet changing needs and the ability to respondquickly to changes in the market place.• Cost savings - from economies of scale, more directrouting, additional expertise, stricter inventory controland, with improved technology, a reduction inemergency shipments at premium prices.• Freedom to focus on core activities - a 3PL providerwill help to develop a company's long-term strategy toimprove customer services, reduce costs and improveefficiency leaving the company to concentrate on it whatit does best.

With the economy showing signs of recovery, an optimised supply chain is more important than ever, writes Roger Williams, CEO of UKWA

Proteus Software is committed toproviding state of the art innovativeWarehouse Management Systems (WMS)for our clients. Continuous investment insoftware development always ensures thatour WMS system utilises the latesttechnology; and that our customers alwayshave the most up to date systems at theirfingertips.

Proteus WMS controls warehouseoperations to optimise processes, makeefficiency gains and maximise return oninvestment. Our systems are available as asimple paper based system utilising paperpick notes; RF Directed, utilising bar codescanning; or as a Voice Picking systemwhere instructions are delivered to theoperative via a headset. Each has its ownbenefits.

A simple paper based WMS willincrease productivity by organisingwarehouse processes so that you operate ina cleaner, slicker, more cost effectivemanner. This is most suitable for anuncomplicated warehouse operation, withsome warehouses not needing any more.

RF Directed Warehouse ManagementSystems are designed to cover receiving,put-away, picking, replenishment andstocktaking. The powerful task schedulerallocates warehouse tasks to personnel withthe relevant equipment to optimise traveltime, and provides for dual cycling and theability to interleave tasks for optimumefficiency.

Proteus Voice Picking System is bestutilised where there is a fine pickingoperation or the operative requires bothhands free, for example in carton picking.Voice Picking frees the operative’s handsallowing him or her to work faster withoutworking harder. Moreover, use of voicetechnology means that the operative’s eyesare focused on completion of the task inhand and not moving from terminal towarehouse locations, helping to improveaccuracy. For certain warehouse functions, for instance picking, use of Proteus VoicePicking system can result in productivitygains of up to 10% over barcode scanning.

Proteus WMS can be used either standalone or as part of a fully integrated suitegiving you completed control of yourwarehouse and supply chain operation. Our systems are available on premise, where you have your own server on site, orserved to you as a Cloud based systemand the software is delivered to you overthe internet on a weekly rental basis, avoiding any capital expenditure.

Furthermore, companies that haveProteus WMS in place have found that theynot only make productivity and efficiencygains, they also operate in a greener, morecost effective way.

The UK's domestic logistics market isamong the most efficient and effectivein the world and without the services it

provides the country would soon come to astandstill. And yet, all too few talentedpeople are pursuing careers in logisticsand, as a result, the industry is facing askills shortage that, if unchecked, couldrepresent a real threat to the sector’sfuture development.

Any industry can only be as good as thetalent that it manages to attract, develop andretain but the logistics industry’s skills base isincreasingly viewed an issue for the industry.

The sector needs to recruit 900,000individuals leading up to 2020 but nearlya fifth of vacancies in the transport andstorage sector are classified as ‘hard to fill‘because of the lack of applicants with therequired skills.

In addition to ‘soft skills’ such ascustomer handling and communication, itis job specific skills that are mostcommonly lacking. Such skills areincreasingly important in a sector facingchange driven by technology andglobalisation.

As businesses prepare for the economicupturn, they will need skilled people inorder to respond to demand but, if it is not

addressed, the current and on-going skillsgap will result in increased operating costsand reduced competitiveness across thesector.”

The logistics industry needs to agree acourse of action which will lead to a morefocused and unified approach to thefundamental issue of training and developingour workforce in a consistent and progressiveway.

But, at present, we do not have thecohesion in the sector to achieve this. Ourlarger companies have difficulty puttingaside their competitive caps whenaddressing key industry issues. There arealso historical, cultural and commercialbarriers between some of our larger tradeassociations, which prevent a unified

While the membership of UKWA iscomprised predominantly of third partywarehousing and logistics service providers, membership eligibility criteria is no longerrestricted to companies operating in thethird party logistics and warehousingsectors. Bill Goodwin (BG): How has theeconomy affected your business?Mike Potts (MP): I think things areimproving but the situation is still tight. Wefind that we’re busy but our profit marginsare being squeezed all the time. There iscertainly no shortage of business out thereto be won though.Peter Whitehead (PW): We’re in asimilar situation. I’d be interested to hearwhere Mike’s sales leads come from. Wefind we’re getting more interest from theinternet.MP: I think its very important not tounderestimate the power of the internet, but, in truth, it’s difficult to quantify whereour leads come from. I think a lot of smallerenquiries are web-generated but discussionsabout bigger contracts tend to still be aresult of more traditional methods such as atip from an existing relationship or adiscussion at a networking event.Rob Meredith (RM): Like everyone elsewe’re always under pressure to reduce costsand we work closely with our suppliers tolook at ways of doing this. We’re facingtough competition and, of course marginsare squeezed but there is business about. However, I do smile when I hear peopletalking about the economy being‘post-recession.’ Are we post-recession or isthe current climate the new ‘normal’? I thinkpeople are deluding themselves if they thinkthat the economy is going to return to whatit was before the slump. Things are going tostay the way they are for some considerabletime. Business is there to be won butmargins will remain tight.

BG: Has the state of the economy

encouraged 3PLs to consider morecollaboration with similar companies?MP: Yes, we’re working morecollaboratively. But, before you enter anagreement –whether it’s a formalpartnership or a loose arrangement – it’sessential that you trust your partnercompany. It goes back to old fashionedrelationships.PW: We find that more and more of ourcustomers are looking for a single sourcesupplier for their logistics and supply chainservices, so we have partnered with lotsof companies. It works well and in anumber of cases the companies thatwe have outsourced the things that wecan’t do to have put business our waywhen they have been approached to dowork that they don’t have the expertise toundertake.

I think the concept of collaboration hasonly really taken off in recent years.Historically there was a lot more distrustamong competitors and this stood in theway of successful collaboration.

BG: How much does governmentlegislation impact upon yourbusiness?RM: Health and safety legislation is alwaysa challenge. But I think one of the bestthings the HSE has done is introduce itsmyth-busting scheme.MP: We use consultants to ensure that wecomply with relevant health and safetyrules. They turn up once a year and give usa few more pages for our health and safetymanual then send us an invoice for £1,000!There is no doubt that you can end upspending a lot of money on health and

safety legislation compliance when, in a lotof cases, the expense could be avoided. Wewere recently quoted £1,200 for somehealth and safety signage. I approachedmy local HSE representative for guidanceand was told that all the signs requiredcould be downloaded free of charge fromthe internet! But finding the right person foradvice can be difficult.PW: We outsource all our human resourcesand health and safety issues to consultants. In both cases , it’s a cost to the business, but I think they’re both invaluable. Weknow that if we had a drama qualified helpis just a phone call away.

BG: It’s fairly clear that the 3PL sectoris changing rapidly. Have youadapted your business models tokeep pace with shifting customerdemands?PW: When I came in to our business wewere one of around 20 companies within a5-mile radius of each other. Now we’re theonly business operating with a truck fleetand storage space – all those firms thatstuck solely with haulage services havegone. We’re based in Croydon and, ofcourse, being in London brings its ownunique set of challenges. There’s littleor no manufacturing done in the areaany more so most of our clients arenow suppliers to the retail sector. However, on the plus side, thecongestion charge and traffic problemsgenerally mean a lot of potentialcompetitors are put off from operating inthe region – so, for us, it’s a good place tobe.MP: We’re based in the south east too andwe find there is growing demand forcourier work because companies do nothave the vehicles that are adapted forurban deliveries.PW: We find we’re doing more deliverywork. Retail customers don’t want to give athird of their retail unit space over to stockholding so they’re demanding morefrequent deliveries and stores wantdeliveries within a very defined time frame. We find that we sometimes visit the samedestination more than once in a day todeliver different products.RM: Customer demands may be changingand its important for suppliers to meetthese demands but if you can’t adapt your

service offering and remain competitive, you’ll be out of the game. We areconstantly looking for cost efficiencies withinour business. We recently introduced voicepicking technology to our operation and theefficiency gains that it brought to ourbusiness were massive. Generally speaking,I think companies take a very aggressiveview when it comes to return on investment. The average payback period demandedseems to be between18 months and twoyears – although in a lot of cases if it can’tbe demonstrated that payback will be madewithin a year, the investment doesn’thappen.MP: We’re always conscious of ouroverheads but are looking at our costingstructure too. We’re a small company andthere are some things that we certainlyundercharge for. It’s easy to be a ‘busyfool’.PM: Where do you see your businesses infive years time?RM: There’s no doubt that sheds arechanging shape. There’s going to be lessstraightforward pallet storage, more pickingand packing. MP: It’s hard for me to plan for the shapeof my business – we’ll go in whateverdirection our customers’ demands take us.

BG: Where do you see the mostgrowth potential for your company?MP: I think the explosion in on-line retailwill continue to be hugely significant. Oneof our online retailer clients started offstoring two pallet loads with us – they’venow got 50! But a lot of online retailers areput off using 3PL because they think they’retoo small. They store stock in their sparebedroom or within self storage units. Werecently saved an online retailer some£30,000 by persuading them to take theirproducts out of self-storage and in to ourwarehouse. 3PLs can offer so much morethan self-storage firms – especially tostart-up online retailers.PW: I think a lot of small online e-retailersuse self-storage units because they offeraccess to stock but nine times out of tenretailers don’t really need the frequency ofstock access they think they need.MP: The hardest challenge we face when itcomes to winning e-fulfilment business fromsmaller companies, is convincing the clientto hand over their ‘baby’. And many online

DP World London Gatewayoffers unique opportunitiesat Europe’s largestlogistics park

It’s all a matter of location, location, location. In logistics it means just asmuch as in the property market. The

closer you are to your customers, thegreater the potential time and cost savings.

The launch of Europe’s largest logisticspark at DP World London Gateway hascreated opportunities for supply chainspecialists to redesign their customers’logistics networks to reduce transportationcosts, shorten delivery times and improvefinal product availability.

DP World London Gateway is the UK’snew deep sea port and, at 25 miles east ofCentral London on the Thames, it wasrecently described as ‘spectacularlywell-located’ and ‘great news for thelogistics industry’. Part of its developmentincludes a fully integrated, tri-modallogistics park, with planning consent formore than 9 million sq ft (860,000 sqmetres).

The park offers 3PLs a uniqueopportunity to develop PortCentric facilities– either dedicated to a specific customer oron a shared user basis – close to the UK’ssingle largest consumer market in Londonand the south-east. This market representsapproximately half of all UK sales.

DP World London Gateway is buildingits own 400,000 sq ft common user facility, while individual customers can choosefrom a variety of sites ranging from100,000 sq ft to 1.2 million sq ft to buildtheir own self-contained distributionwarehouse facilities. Buildings can be up to41.5 m high.

The park already benefits from a goodroad network, with dual carriageway to itsfront door from the motorway network. This road will be upgraded as thedevelopment progresses. The location ofthe park next to the port, linked by privateroads, also reduces time and costs

incurred between the ship and thedistribution centre.

The port and park benefit from directrail connections and companies buildingfacilities in the park will be able to specifythat their warehouse is rail connected.Earlier this year, railfreight company DBSchenker announced its intention to launchservices from London Gateway, andFreightliner has also run trains from theport.

Marks & Spencer has alreadyannounced plans to invest £200 million inbuilding a 900,000 sq ft facility at thepark. Chief Executive Marc Bolland recentlysaid: “London Gateway will become ourthird large distribution centre in the UK aswe transform our logistics operations into amodern and agile supply chain, fit for thefuture of M&S.

“As we become an international, multichannel retailer, London Gateway willhelp us become more efficient by cuttingcosts and locating our supply chain closerto our stores and our international markets. It will also help us deliver against our PlanA objectives by removing road miles andemissions from our network.”

Simon Moore, CEO, DP World LondonGateway, said: “Marks & Spencer will havea world-class distribution centre connectedto a world-class deep-sea port providingmore reliability and efficiency for itsbusiness. By bringing ships carryingmillions of products closer to the point ofconsumption we will help M&S to shortenits supply chain. We will also support Marksand Spencer’s exports from LondonGateway.”

DP World London Gateway received itsfirst scheduled ship call on 7 November2013, signaling the start of the next phasein the development of the UK’s best locatedsupply chain facility.

Farrall’s moves into the fast laneFarrall’s Transport is a fast

expanding logistics businessfounded on the sound ethics

and values of a family runenterprise. Now moving into thethird generation, the family isinvesting for the future by brining infurther expertise to develop seniormanagement capabilities, HRresources and a new TrainingAcademy.

As part of this programme, thecompany has recently invested £1.5million expanding the company’stransport fleet to support businessgrowth, improve environmentalperformance and increasefuel-efficiency. Since March 2013,Farrall’s has taken delivery of 13new Volvo trucks and 10 newtrailers complete with tail-lifts,boosting the company’s deliverypower to 40 vehicles and 60trailers.

The strategic investment is partof a major business expansion planfor the logistics services companyand follows steady growth in newcontract wins and a take-up of‘value added’ activities.

Established in Cheshire in 1956,Farrall’s Transport has developed tobecome a £7 million turnoverlogistics business offering over100,000 sq ft of food gradewarehousing space across sites inChester and Deeside. The companyis a founding member andshareholder of Palletforce and hasachieved the ‘Depot of the Year’Award seven years consecutively forits consistently high standards ofservice and quality. In addition, thecompany is an active member of

the Transport Association, the RoadHaulage Association and the UKWarehousing Association, and isaccredited to ISO 9001:2008. As afull service logistics provider, thecompany runs national contracts formany of the UK’s leadingcompanies.

In line with the company’s policyto be in the vanguard ofenvironmental performance, and inaddition to the recent investment inan expanded environmentallyefficient fleet, Farrall’s Transporthas installed Dynafleet, VolvoTrucks’ online transport informationsystem to bring about significantfuel savings – boosting fleetaverage miles per gallon from 8.6to 9.6 mpg and saving £100,000from the annual fuel bill.

Within the last few weeks, thecompany has achieved ‘Bronze’accreditation under the FleetOperator Recognition Scheme(FORS). The highly acclaimedvoluntary certification scheme is amethod of recognising fleetoperations that comply with theFORS standard, based uponlawfulness, safety, efficiency andenvironmental protection.

Under the scheme’s rigorousauditing process, Farrall’s Transportwas assessed on its managementprocesses and procedures relatingto a wide range of activities, including: driver training, accidentreporting & investigation, loadingof vehicles, reversing technique, fuel usage and driving style, awareness to vulnerable roadusers, and the health and safety ofdrivers.

“As a logistics business it’simportant for us to demonstrate toour clients and peers that we are atthe forefront of the industry inpursuing operational excellenceand are compliant with the highstandards set by FORS,” says MikeFarrall, Managing Director ofFarrall’s Transport.

The company is also in a goodposition regarding the progress ofits drivers gaining their Driver CPCby the deadline of September2014, most of the company’sdrivers have completed at leastthree out of the required five daysand many drivers have alreadypicked up their qualification cardhaving finished all of their five daysof training.

When it comes to increasing thescope of the business, Mike Farrallbelieves there is a huge potential indeveloping the area of ‘valueadded’ services for clients. He says,“Smaller third party logisticsoperators have an advantage overthe big, international players asthey can get closer to theircustomers and can develop strongrelationships that are rooted in thehighest levels of the business. It isoften through strong relationshipswith customers that an operatorcan develop capabilities that mirrorand complement the developmentof their client’s business. What ismore, a smaller 3pl is far morelikely to be agile - respondingswiftly and more flexibly to aclient’s changing requirements.”

Whatever theconsignment, the end-to-endstock trackingsoftware fromAdvancedBusinessSolutionsensures thatgoods – andclients - arehandledefficiently andwith care

Leading European third-party logistics (3PL)company DSV Solutions is a thriving businesswhich attributes its growth to an ability tomove swiftly as new clients come on board, oras their requirements evolve. It prides itself onhandling a diverse range of goods, fromfootwear and clothes, to fragile tableware andelectrical appliances.

Satisfying the broad spectrum of needsassociated with such a varied client portfoliomeans being able to monitor stock attentivelyas it moves through the warehouse; providecustomers with regular, tailored statusupdates; and, as a business, retain plenty ofroom for manoeuvre.

Key to achieving all of this is the company’swarehouse management system, OpenWMSfrom Advanced Business Solutions. DSVSolutions has been using the technology since2006, when it was still operating as ABXLogistics (DSV acquired the company in 2008).ABX was expanding its Thrapston,Northamptonshire-based warehouse facility, generating significant new client opportunities. But this also created a need for a formalwarehouse management system (WMS).

“Up until that point we didn’t have awarehouse management system, and wererecording stock details manually, on paperand using spreadsheets,” explains JosieWhorwell, logistics analyst at DSV Solutions,as the business is known today. “This createda lot of data re-entry work, and limited ourvisibility of stock and space availability. Wedidn’t have any real traceability of productseither, so if a pallet went missing due tohuman error it wasn’t easy to establish whathad happened to it. As we expanded, it wasobvious we needed a more systematic way ofhandling things. With significant extra capacitywe needed more location-based control.”

One solution, many applicationsAs the broader business used

OpenAccounts enterprise accounting software, the IT team sought a compatible warehousemanagement system that would feel familiar. From a shortlist of three possible solutions, itchose OpenWMS (formerly StockTrack PLUSfrom acquired ATMS plc) from AdvancedBusiness Solutions.

OpenWMS is a comprehensive warehousemanagement system that has been designedto improve stock accuracy, stock control andstock rotation, increase operational efficiency, and provide detailed, two-way traceability andmanagement information for logisticscompanies and their supply-chain customers.

Of DSV’s reasons for selecting the system,Ms Whorwell says, “Our IT people liked theteam they met, the structure they had andtheir understanding of the challenges facingthird-party logistics companies.”

Dis for diversity as DSV is able to handle an eclectic mix of stock thanks

to the flexibility of its OpenWMS warehouse management system

More importantly, the software providedample flexibility to meet the varying needs ofDSV’s broad client base.

Customers’ specific needs might rangefrom how a product is stored, to the exactinformation that is recorded and reportedback. “Some clients need full traceability backto product batch codes; others aren’t botheredabout this at all,” Ms Whorwell notes.

“Even if we are given very little notice, theAdvanced team has always been veryresponsive about meeting new customers’needs, or making required changes. In onecase they only had 2-3 weeks to preparesomething but they did it. They always deliverwhat’s required. We meet at least twice a yeartoo, to review where we are and explore newopportunities for further improvement.”

One such requirement recently has beenfor DSV to be able to handle Internet-basedorders, quickly and easily. “A slick and swiftoperation is critical when orders comethrough via the web. That means being ableto combine picking notes with carrier detailsto minimise double-handling of goods,” MsWhorwell says. The OpenWMS system isfacilitating all of this.

Keeping customers in the loopAs well as having a tighter handle on

stock, DSV is able to provide clients withdetailed information which they can use intheir own planning and managementreporting. On an ongoing basis, clients canhave real-time feedback about receipts anddispatch of consignments, and stockavailability. And at specified time intervals theycan receive updates on outstanding picks, andperformance against agreed targets.

“We can answer queries in real time andsoon clients will be able to gain access to theinformation directly, via a self-service portal, giving them a more direct line of sight of stockavailability and movement,” Ms Whorwellsays.

Supporting business growthToday, DSV is in the final stages of

constructing a huge new warehouse alongsideits existing facilities in Thrapston which willmore than triple the company’s capacity in theregion. The new storage unit, with threemezzanine floors and capacity for 15,000additional pallets, will be ready by July 2013at which point the OpenWMS software (whichis also used at two other sites in the UK) willbe rolled out here too.

“Managing our operations withoutOpenWMS would be unthinkable now,” MsWhorwell concludes. “Not only is the systemcentral to our efficiency and productivity, it iskey to our ability to seize new businessopportunities, exploit new channels anddeliver first-class customer service.”

According to a recent study byCapgemini and Penn StateUniversity, 40% of 3PL customers still

see an ‘IT gap’ between their actualexpectations and their 3PL’s capacity todeliver. So how can a 3PL bridge that gap? Howcan you give your customer the confidenceto develop a long-term relationship? What’s going to stop customers takingtheir business back in house, or pitchingyou against the lowest bidder at renewal? Hitting KPIs, SLA compliance, accuracy andcost reduction are all necessary to success, but they can be matched by thecompetition or customers themselves. Thismeans that the savvy 3PL must find newand innovative ways to demonstrate itsown unique value, if it is going to buildthose relationships and secure newbusiness in today’s volatile market. And the pressure is on. Companies areincreasingly looking for their 3PL to bringgame-changing solutions to their contract.Their own market is continually evolving asthe omni-channel consumer demandsmore flexible and convenient ways toengage with their favorite brands, and thisleaves companies with a series ofchallenges to overcome. Whilst they knowtheir own business, they turn to a 3PL forwarehousing and logistics expertise inorder to satisfy their own increasinglydemanding end-customers. To meet these requirements 3PLs need tofind new ways to provide sustainable andcost-effective solutions. But this takes bothtime and money, often in short supply, which means 3PLs need to ensure that anyinvestment they make is based on a solid,

risk-averse business case, and that it isprotected and returned within the life of thecontract. As such, 3PLs are now looking tovoice to deliver the disruptive technologychange their customers demand. Movingfrom paper-based or RF scanning systemsto voice has proven to dramatically improveoperational productivity by 30%, with theinvestment being comfortably returnedwithin 12 months. This, combined with thefact that a Vocollect Voice system canoperate with any WMS or ERP system over astandard RF network, provides 3PLs such asDHL with the confidence and flexibility toutilize voice technology across multiple sitesand customer contracts. At the end of the day, a variety of factorswill determine a 3PL’s ability to either meetor exceed the demands of their customers. But ultimately, innovation and theinvestment in technology will tip the scalesfor companies weighing up suppliers andseeking a 3PL who can really add value totheir ever more complex supply chains.Vocollect Voice is increasingly being seen bythe proactive 3PL as a way to change thegame and stand out above the competition.

Staying ahead of thecompetition:“Contract logistics providers turn to voice technology to bridge the ‘IT gap’”, explains Matt Gregory,Business Development Manager for Third Party Logistics, Vocollect EMEA.

One of the best known and most iconicnames in the transport and distributionsector, Eddie Stobart, has placed asubstantial order with Irish articulatedforklift manufacturer Aisle-Master toprovide a large fleet for its ContractLogistics and Warehousing Division.

This arm of Stobart’s operations offersover 6 million square feet of storagefacilities for major names in the UK retailand manufacturing sectors. Twenty-fiveAisle-Masters have so far been delivered tovarious sites, with another ten due to beoperational over the next twelve months. Asnew opportunities for sites and contractsare identified the number of Aisle-Masterslooks set to increase even further.

The Aisle-Masters were selectedfollowing a tendering process for a newfleet that was necessary due to certainchanges in the business model coupledwith an increase in customer demand andthroughput volume. As Stobart’s ageingarticulated trucks were coming to the endof their operational life the companydecided to investigate alternative brands asit was keen to stick to the articulated systemwhich ensures optimum pallet density innarrow aisle configurations.

The build quality and reputation forextreme reliability of the Aisle-Masters weretwo factors which won over OperationsDirector Graeme Undy and MHE ManagerBrian Smith. Equally important in securingthis significant contract however was theaccommodating and “can do” attitude ofAisle-Master personnel as well as CarryliftGroup who supplied and service the fleet.Graeme explains: “Just as we engage withour workforce and take note of their issues,we like to forge amicable relationships withsuppliers who are open to suggestionsfrom our side. This helps to driveinnovation, is beneficial for all concernedand accords with Aisle-Master’s ethos ofproviding customer led solutions.”

Feedback from initial trials led to certainmodifications for some or all of the fleet: to

Aisle-Master’s SpecialDelivery for Eddie Stobart

the design of the overhead guard andsteering column for example. The electricpowered 20WHE models with 2000kgcapacity that are now working in around70% of Stobart’s warehousing network arebespoke units and some of suggestionsmade by the Stobart team will beincorporated in the Aisle-Master designgoing forward.

The trucks are mainly used for insideoperation to place and pick pallets thathave been deposited in the goods-in bayby other forklifts or power pallet trucks, buttheir versatile indoor/outdoor capabilitymeans that at sites with external palletbanks they can also be used for offloadingand yard work. Existing narrow aisle widthsvary from 1660mm to 2400mm dependingon the location and racking heights aretypically from 9m to 11m.

One crucial issue in the initial tenderwas the provision of continual batterypower for minimum disruption whenbatteries need to be changed. The solutionfrom Aisle-Master was to supply threebatteries for each unit, so that at any onetime one is in use, the other is chargingand the third is standing ready. This meansthat streamlined operation is guaranteedwhatever shift system is in operation. Thequick and easy battery changeover using apallet truck takes just a minute or soaccording to Graeme and results inpermanent availability of equipment.

“We have seen a marked increase inproductivity levels at every site where theAisle-Masters have been introduced,” saysGraeme, “which is good for our operators, good for us and therefore beneficial to ourcustomers. The investment in this new fleethas certainly paid off.”
